Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Full Grown Man Mix

In the middle of posting this, I heard about the passing of Rock and Roll legend Bobby Keys. The long-time Rolling Stones saxophonist was a resident of Nashville at the time of his passing, and I had the great pleasure of seeing him and his band play a free lunch time show at the downtown Public Library in the summer of 2013.  RIP Bobby Keys…

Today’s shuffle follows no set pattern, obeys no written (or unwritten) rules, and was a heck of a lot of fun to listen to on a rainy morning commute.

“Thunderstorm” by The Western Shore from Thunderstorm

The rain this morning hardly qualified as a Thunderstorm – nevertheless, I am always glad to hear songs by one of my favorite East Nashville duos.

“Three Little Angels” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

From Knoxville, The Dirty Guv’nahs have a great band name, and an awesome groovy sound.

“North Side Gal” by JD McPherson from The Rounder Records Collection/Signs and Signifiers

Happiness is finding some JD McPherson music on NoiseTrade…  This song is from his 2012 album.

“St. James Infirmary” by Jon Batiste and Stay Human from Social Music

Jon Batiste is an innovative jazz pianist from New Orleans.  I recently got turned on to his music when a new project he is involved in came to light. That project – The Process – features Batiste along with avant garde bassist Bill Laswell, and RHCP drummer Chad Smith. Here we have Batiste and his band doing an standard made famous by Louis Armstrong.

“Blue in Green” by Miles Davis from The Classic Album Collection/Kind of Blue

Keeping things in a jazz groove (and the first of three instrumentals in a row).  How about Miles Davis…

“La Mort” by Martial Solal from A Bout De Souffle (Breathless)

From the soundtrack of the French New Wave classic (and Jon Luc Godard’s first feature film), comes this track from the jazz pianist and composer Martial Solal.

“Great Blue C” by The 442s from The 442s

The 442s are from St. Louis. The band features two jazz musicians and two classical musicians.  They have an innovative sound and approach that I really dig. This was my first listen, and I want to hear more.

“Big Love” by Little Village from Little Village !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

And we close out the shuffle with another great song from this amazing collection of talent.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – What’s He Building? Mix

Time to ease into a new week, a new month, and for some of us a new time structure – as Daylight Savings Time ends and Standard Time begins.  It’s Monday…  Let’s do this shuffle thing…

“For The Battered” by Tommy Womack from Stubborn

From his 2008 album, we have Nashville songwriting icon Tommy Womack (Government Cheese, Daddy) with a powerful song about a serious issue – domestic violence.  I could not find a video of this song, so I picked a version of one of my favorite Tommy Womack songs – The Replacements.

“Lay Me Down” by Heather Powell from Believe it to Life

True Groove recording artist Heather Powell, just recently released her latest album, A Haze of Grays and Blue.  Today, we have the first of two tracks from her previous album Believe it to Life.  Such a powerhouse vocalist!

“Tarwater (The Fighter)” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

Another fine track from The Dirty Guv’nahs of Knoxville, TN.  The band’s song “Morning Light” was featured on the latest episode of the ABC television show, Nashville.

“Chess Piece Face” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

This morning E2TG finally wraps up this live revisit to one of my all-time favorite albums.  The first album from They Might Be Giants.

“Long Gray Line” by Heather Powell from Believe it to Life

Here is our second track from Heather Powell.  A strongly delivered song about her family’s history of military service.

“Tubular Bells” (from the “Exorcist”) by Mike Oldfield from Tubular Bells (Deluxe Version)

This one got added for Halloween, but one can never go wrong with Tubular Bells and/or music from the classic 1973 Horror film, The Exorcist.

“Saint Mary’s” by American Aquarium from Burn. Flicker. Die.

Music loving procrastinators please note, if you’ve not yet got around to picking up American Aquarium’s awesome 2012 album Burn. Flicker. Die. which was recorded and Muscle Shoals and produced by Jason Isbell – now is your chance to grab it for free (donations welcome) via Noisetrade.  Their next album Wolves is due soon – so get this one now and be ready.  This is about a close to perfect as an album can get.

“What’s He Building?” by Tom Waits from Mule Variations

Another added for Halloween, but again – you cannot go wrong with Tom Waits.  Here he asks the musical question, What’s He Building in There?  All about that quiet neighbor who keeps to himself.  You know… that neighbor…

“Town Clown” by Kelsey Waldon from The Goldmine

I’ve been hearing a whole bunch about Kelsey Waldon, and I see a bunch of my Facebook friends are Facebook friends with her.  Finally, getting a chance to check out her music, and so far, I am digging it bunches. This here is a fine, fine song.   She is based in Nashville.

“The Temporary Blues” by The Features from Old Familiar Melodies – 2008-2013/!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);Some Kind of Salvation

And we close out our first shuffle to November with a nifty song from Tennessee-based band The Features.  From my You Tube search it appears that this song was featured in the television show Degrassi.  At least in some incarnation of the long running, multiple generational, multiple incarnated series about teens.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Your VooDoo Mix

If you haven’t already, please go “Like” the Ear to the Ground: A Music Blog – Facebook Page.  And then like, comment, and share to keep all the fun posts coming to your news feed.  Like last need, we cleared out the 10 oldest songs from our active playlist via a Facebook-only posting frenzy.  It was fun.

Now, it’s Friday and we have a shuffle to end all shuffles (for the week)…

“Canyons” by The Dirty Guv’nahs  from Hearts on Fire

We start things off with another fine song from the fun as heck Knoxville band with the great name…

“Soldier of Misfortune” by David Olney from When the Deal Goes Down

We finish up our survey When the Deal Goes Down with further proof that Mr. Olney is one of best songwriters working today…

“Great Big Life” by Kyle Andrews from Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville

We’ve featured the music of Kyle Andrews before, and it is good to have him back in the shuffle with his excellent Electo Pop songs – this time from the Deer Head Music mixtape we have been featuring.

“Down and Out” by Roadkill Ghost Choir from Slow Knife EP

Roadkill Ghost Choir are from Florida, and they have been showing up all over my newsfeed and even as a paid “Ad” at the beginning of some You Tube videos.  Fortunately, there music is quite good.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Esquivel from Exploring New Sounds in Stereo

Juan Garcia Esquivel who often was billed as Esquivel or Esquivel! was an innovative  Mexican bandleader who was most active in the late 50s and early sixties.  He primarily recorded what is now known as Lounge music, and he is best remembered as an excellent composer and a brilliant experimenter. The music is lively and quirky and fun.

“It’s Your Voodoo Working” by Charles Sheffield from Charles Sheffield

How about we dig into some Northern Soul music from 1961 via one of Popatunes’ submissions to the Halloween-themed October 2014 edition of the Feel Bad for You monthly mixtape.

“Faithful” by Moseley from !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville

We close out the set with another song from the Deer Head Music mixtape.  This was my first listen to Moseley, and I am impressed. I just read that they are working on their debut album (I think it’s their debut – I’m too lazy to confirm – so if I’m wrong please let me know) with Jay Joyce.  Joyce is a well-respected producer having worked with among many others, Cage the Elephant.  I remember him as a member of one of the most original Nashville bands of the late 80s – In Pursuit.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Egg Cream Mix

Some days, I like to provide a detailed and creative commentary of the connections which exist between seeming unconnected songs.  Some times, though, I just like to let these songs sit together awkwardly at the table while I sit back with a conspiratorial smile on my face (even then I have no co-conspirator).   Today seems like a good time for the latter….  enjoy the awkwardness, but remember that the connections exist even if we cannot see them….

“Pity Party” by David Dondero from Spider West Myhskin And A City Bus Reissue plus 2

I like to champion geniuses who should be more famous that they are, and I’m not afraid to county myself as previously among the ignorant masses to do so.  Darrin Bradbury told me to check out David Dondero (I don’t know why I missed out on him until now), and I did and I will and I will and I will….

“Surrounded” by Dan Coyle from Perfect World, Perfect Beat

Ear to the Ground featured some music from Dan Coyle back in 2013.  He is about to release his latest album (Perfect World, Perfect Beat drops October 21), and we have been able to hear the album ahead of it’s release.  Expect more to come. Good stuff!

“Девушка из Колхиды” by Orera from 1970

More great folk music from Georgia.

“The Lodgers” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council/Internationalists

or “She Was Only a Shopkeepers Daughter” from the second album by Paul Wellers follow-up band to The Jam.

“Under Control” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

Knoxville based The Dirty Guv’nahs with another track off of the band’s more recent studio album.

“Egg Cream” by Lou Reed from Set the Twilight Reeling

Lou Reed sings about Egg Cream. From his 1996 studio follow-up to 1992’s Magic and Loss.

“Twangsville” by Duane Eddy from Twangsville

It don’t mean a thang if it ain’t got that twang….

“Chemistry” by Hayden Coleman from Chemistry (Maxi Single)

My man H.C. has been in his mad-scientist lair mixing up some dope beats and mad rhymes. (And the previous sentence sums up why I don’t play more hip-hop).  It’s not the hip-hop that is the problem – it’s me.  Regardless, this song – the first single from an exciting new project has a hook to die for… don’t die – just bounce!

“What You Do to Me” by Milktooth from Deer Heard Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville/Wild Before Our Eyes

Another from Nashville – more of the indie rock compilation put out by Deer Head Music.

“When a Car Becomes a House” by Darrin Bradbury from unreleased demos

Another of the cool new songs I’ve been able to preview from Darrin Bradbury.  He is doing a showcase at the Basement on Wednesday, and then a show at the Five Spot in November.  Meanwhile, catch him around Nashville and you’re likely to see me nearby as well.

“Road to Nowhere” by Talking Heads from The Best of Talking Heads/Little Creatures!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

We close things out with a rather joyful song about doom. It’s one of my favorite songs from the Little Creatures album, and one I never grow tired for hearing.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Fight the World Mix

So, Americana Music Fest week is over, and Nashville can go back to being this cool city with live music happening every single night all over town….  Even with being an official attendee at AMA, I managed to see some amazing music, saw a bunch of old friends, made some new friends, and discovered some new music which will be showing up on E2TG soon…

The End Men @ The Basement 9/21/2014

More pics and commentary coming up.

Let’s shuffle…

“Ratking” by The End Men from Odds and Ends

Look, I really swear – the shuffle function picks the songs! Really!  But… but! How appropriate to start things off with The End Men who made a rare Nashville appearance, shook up The Basement, and helped to wrap up AMA Week as part of a Post-Americana fest all-day show.  Also, today is Livia Ranalli’s birthday – so please wish this amazing drummer an awesome day!

“I’d Fight the World” by Jim Reeves from Gentleman Jim

In honor of Matthew Hendershot’s nervousness about the significant lack of Twang in The End Men’s sound compared to most of the other awesome acts on the bill (hint: nobody cared), I thought we would follow up The End Men with Country Music legend, Gentlemen Jim Reeves. (Except, I didn’t decide – see it really is the shuffle function).

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js “When Sal’s Burned Down” by Dar Williams from The Honesty Room

Moving on with this great song from Dar Williams.  The video is a fan-made mash-up of the audio of the song with scenes from the Japanese anime series Cowboy Bebop. Please don’t ask me…

“Crawdad Song” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

Pork Chop Willie doing the American standard.  Our video playlist features another Pork Chop Willie performance plus a version of this song by Woody Guthrie.

“Someone to Love” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

“Slow Down Easy” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

Two in a row from this enthusiastically awesome Knoxville band.

“All She Wrote” by Deena from Rock River

Another great track from the most recent album by the former The Cucumbers member.

“Promised Land” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of The Style Council/Non-Album Single

A late period The Style Council single.

“Blind Melon Morpheus (missed the train)” by Tomas Doncker Band from Moanin’ at Midnight: The Howlin’ Wolf Project

And, we close things out with the one and only Tomas Doncker and his band from the stunning Howlin’ Wolf tribute album.  Tomas is wrapping up work on his follow-up which is going to be ground-breaking and freaking awesome.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Better Than That Mix

Good Monday Morning….  E2TG is back with our Morning Shuffle to excite and delight you!

“Raised by Wolves” by U2 from Songs of Innocence

Wait! How the heck did this get on my computer?  So, basically, it’s typical late career U2. If you like late career U2, you will like this.  If you don’t like late career U2, you probably won’t like this. The video is a cover of the song done on a ukulele.

“Gimme Some Motivation” by Delta Spirit from Lost and Found/I Think I’ve Found It

Every once in a while, my music player has this odd delay where the song will change before the picture changes.  So, this song came on and when I looked at my phone, I saw the album cover for U2, and I thought, “Wow! If this was on the new U2 album, I would be excited.”  It’s not. It’s Delta Spirit. I’m still excited.

“As Time Goes By” by Victoria Williams from Sings Some Ol’ Songs

The fundamental things apply…  Play it, Sam!

“You Don’t Want Want Change, Change is for the Deranged” by The Yugos from The Yugos

Great song title by a cool young band from Kentucky which I learned about in a Facebook post by Dan Stuart (Green on Red, Danny and Dusty).

“Never Give In” by Will Hoge from Never Give In

Will Hoge is an award winning, Grammy nominated  Nashville musician/singer/songwriter.

“Wintertime” by Chris Stamey from Lovesick Blues

Damn – there was a chill in the air this morning, but I’m not ready for Winter yet… Then again, I’m not sure this song is just about the literal season, and I really, really dig this song.

“Morning Light” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

Another grooving song from the latest album by Knoxville’s The Dirty Guv’nahs.

“It Was My Season” by Okkervil River from The Silver Gymnasium

Will Sheff and company with the opening song from their 7th and most recent album.

“Better Than That” by Sam Davison from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 4/Always Around

Our final track from the 4th edition of the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen sampler, and an awesome way to close out our Monday Shuffle.  I’m a big fan of Sam Davison.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Number Three Mix

One of the best side-effects of writing this blog (and certainly not one I expected or intended) has been the incredible people I have met.  Honestly, that is one of the main reasons, I have kept this up for three years.  One of the very first people I “met” way back in the early stages of Ear to the Ground was Howard Rabach.  Last night, I was fortunate enough to meet him in person and have an enjoyable dinner. Tonight, I get to see him again – playing bass for The Grey A for their CD Release Show at The Stone Fox.

Shuffle – let’s go!

Today, I found videos of the actual artists and songs for all but one of the songs in the shuffle…

“What a Way to Go” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/The Devil is a Busy Man

Tim Carroll is about release a new album which should be awesome.  In the meantime, dig on this!

“When it Was Wrong” (Live) by The California Honeydrops from Honeydrops Live/Spreadin’ Honey

The California Honeydrops’ music just makes me feel good all over.

“Inside Job” by Little Village from Little Village

The hits keep coming from Hiatt, Cooder, Keltner, and Lowe

“Pictures” (acoustic) by Madi Diaz from Stripped Chopped + Screwed

A pretty song from the talented Ms. Diaz.

“In a Cold World” by Toot Sweet from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 5/American Hymn

Talk about a rich well of talent!  It seems like we’ve already featured like 100 songs from the latest Mama Coco’s sampler, and they are all good.  I really like this one, and I’m going to check out more music from Toot Sweet!

“A New Life” by Jim James from Regions of Light and Sound of God

I don’t care if you call him Jim James or Yim Yames. I don’t care if he is fronting My Morning Jacket, jamming with the all-star Monsters of Folk, or like here on his own – Jim James rarely misses the mark as far as I am concerned.

“Number Three” (Live) by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

I think anyone who writes (music or words) has experienced (at least temporarily) the feeling that you’ve used up all of your ideas.  This song has always been a favorite of mine by TMBG.

“Ever Start to Wonder” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Hearts on Fire

This is from The Dirty Guv’nahs’ most recently album. They are from Knoxville, Tennessee, and they groove like you won’t even believe.

“Vagabon Special” by an All-Star Cajun Band from Evangeline Made: a tribute to Cajun Music

This is the instrumental first track from the Evangeline Made album featuring an All-Star band of Cajun musicians that includes the legendary Michael Doucet. I could not find a video of this song, but the song was written by Marc Savoy, and I found a video of The Savoy Family playing and people dancing.

“It Didn’t Matter” by The Style Council from The Singular Adventures of the Style Council/The Cost of Loving

And we close out the day and the week !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);of shuffles with another song from the impressive Style Council catalogue.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Grand Company Mix

Introducing:  The E2TG Hall of Fame —– Ta Da!

You may be asking, “WTF?” Basically, it comes down to this: My blogging consultant told me I need to start being more controversial to attract more readers to my site. Whenever, I see posts about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they always seem to attract highly opinionated comments. So, I thought if I came up with my own Hall of Fame, it might create controversy and angry comment wars which might “go viral” as the kids say.*

*All of the proceeding is true except for the following: I don’t have a blogging consultant. I rarely read comment wars about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the only thing likely to “go viral” over here is an actual virus.

Really, I got to thinking about the artists I consider E2TG featured artist. When I began writing E2TG way back in the spring of 2011, I began naming a Band of the Week just about every week.  I did this for a about year, before switching to a featured artist designation – wherein I would name ten or so “featured artists” every month and put them in “heavy rotation” for the remainder of that month.  That carried on for just over six months. Since, then I keep featuring new music, but I haven’t really been very organized about recognizing those bands.  So… I decided to take stock – at this random point in E2TG history and go back and formally recognize all of the bands that I consider part of the E2TG family.  To do so, I decided to use the TAG “cloud” on the sidebar and begin with the most tagged bands and work my way down.  So, for the near future, I am going to name three, two or one band every day to join the E2TG HofF.  It’s a purely honorary title – as currently it does not come with a cash prize nor is there an actual Hall.

I am going to create and maintain a Sidebar linked Page for the Hall of Fame artists – with videos, songs, links, an on-going web-store and more.  It’s still under construction, so will update when I have a Page set up.

So without much more ado, E2TG is pleased to announce our inaugural class of Hall of Fame inductees:

1. THE END MEN from Brooklyn, NY

2.TACO LAND – from San Antonio, TX

3. SKELETONS IN THE PIANO from Saratoga Springs, NY

Stay tuned!  More to come.

Shuffle is up next

“Honey You” by The Dirty Guv’nahs (from Somewhere Beneath These Southern Skies. Groovy grooves from Knoxville, TN.)

“Bluebirds Fall” by The Autumn Defense (from the Birds, Beasts, and Flowers EP. A split EP with the band Hem. Lilting harmonies from Chicago by way of Wilco.)

“August” by prattle on, rick. (from A Decade Begins. Summery instrumental goodness from Nashville.)

“Grand Company” by Joseph Mooradian (It’s good to see this kid making lots of new music – I just heard an excellent even newer song this morning.  This one is supposedly a work-in-progress, but it’s an excellent song. CLICK HERE to listen and download.“)

“Last Nite” by Adele (covering The Strokes.)

“Tracks of my Tears by Linda Ronstadt (covering Smokey Robinson and The Miracles classic)
