Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Full Grown Man Mix

In the middle of posting this, I heard about the passing of Rock and Roll legend Bobby Keys. The long-time Rolling Stones saxophonist was a resident of Nashville at the time of his passing, and I had the great pleasure of seeing him and his band play a free lunch time show at the downtown Public Library in the summer of 2013.  RIP Bobby Keys…



Today’s shuffle follows no set pattern, obeys no written (or unwritten) rules, and was a heck of a lot of fun to listen to on a rainy morning commute.

The rain this morning hardly qualified as a Thunderstorm – nevertheless, I am always glad to hear songs by one of my favorite East Nashville duos.

From Knoxville, The Dirty Guv’nahs have a great band name, and an awesome groovy sound.

“North Side Gal” by JD McPherson from The Rounder Records Collection/Signs and Signifiers

Happiness is finding some JD McPherson music on NoiseTrade…  This song is from his 2012 album.

“St. James Infirmary” by Jon Batiste and Stay Human from Social Music

Jon Batiste is an innovative jazz pianist from New Orleans.  I recently got turned on to his music when a new project he is involved in came to light. That project – The Process – features Batiste along with avant garde bassist Bill Laswell, and RHCP drummer Chad Smith. Here we have Batiste and his band doing an standard made famous by Louis Armstrong.

“Blue in Green” by Miles Davis from The Classic Album Collection/Kind of Blue

Keeping things in a jazz groove (and the first of three instrumentals in a row).  How about Miles Davis…

“La Mort” by Martial Solal from A Bout De Souffle (Breathless)

From the soundtrack of the French New Wave classic (and Jon Luc Godard’s first feature film), comes this track from the jazz pianist and composer Martial Solal.

“Great Blue C” by The 442s from The 442s

The 442s are from St. Louis. The band features two jazz musicians and two classical musicians.  They have an innovative sound and approach that I really dig. This was my first listen, and I want to hear more.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – What’s He Building? Mix

Time to ease into a new week, a new month, and for some of us a new time structure – as Daylight Savings Time ends and Standard Time begins.  It’s Monday…  Let’s do this shuffle thing…

“For The Battered” by Tommy Womack from Stubborn

From his 2008 album, we have Nashville songwriting icon Tommy Womack (Government Cheese, Daddy) with a powerful song about a serious issue – domestic violence.  I could not find a video of this song, so I picked a version of one of my favorite Tommy Womack songs – The Replacements.

“Lay Me Down” by Heather Powell from Believe it to Life

True Groove recording artist Heather Powell, just recently released her latest album, A Haze of Grays and Blue.  Today, we have the first of two tracks from her previous album Believe it to Life.  Such a powerhouse vocalist!

Another fine track from The Dirty Guv’nahs of Knoxville, TN.  The band’s song “Morning Light” was featured on the latest episode of the ABC television show, Nashville.

Another added for Halloween, but again – you cannot go wrong with Tom Waits.  Here he asks the musical question, What’s He Building in There?  All about that quiet neighbor who keeps to himself.  You know… that neighbor…

I’ve been hearing a whole bunch about Kelsey Waldon, and I see a bunch of my Facebook friends are Facebook friends with her.  Finally, getting a chance to check out her music, and so far, I am digging it bunches. This here is a fine, fine song.   She is based in Nashville.

Roadkill Ghost Choir are from Florida, and they have been showing up all over my newsfeed and even as a paid “Ad” at the beginning of some You Tube videos.  Fortunately, there music is quite good.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Esquivel from Exploring New Sounds in Stereo

Juan Garcia Esquivel who often was billed as Esquivel or Esquivel! was an innovative  Mexican bandleader who was most active in the late 50s and early sixties.  He primarily recorded what is now known as Lounge music, and he is best remembered as an excellent composer and a brilliant experimenter. The music is lively and quirky and fun.

How about we dig into some Northern Soul music from 1961 via one of Popatunes’ submissions to the Halloween-themed October 2014 edition of the Feel Bad for You monthly mixtape.

We close out the set with another song from the Deer Head Music mixtape.  This was my first listen to Moseley, and I am impressed. I just read that they are working on their debut album (I think it’s their debut – I’m too lazy to confirm – so if I’m wrong please let me know) with Jay Joyce.  Joyce is a well-respected producer having worked with among many others, Cage the Elephant.  I remember him as a member of one of the most original Nashville bands of the late 80s – In Pursuit.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Egg Cream Mix

Some days, I like to provide a detailed and creative commentary of the connections which exist between seeming unconnected songs.  Some times, though, I just like to let these songs sit together awkwardly at the table while I sit back with a conspiratorial smile on my face (even then I have no co-conspirator).   Today seems like a good time for the latter….  enjoy the awkwardness, but remember that the connections exist even if we cannot see them….

I like to champion geniuses who should be more famous that they are, and I’m not afraid to county myself as previously among the ignorant masses to do so.  Darrin Bradbury told me to check out David Dondero (I don’t know why I missed out on him until now), and I did and I will and I will and I will….

Ear to the Ground featured some music from Dan Coyle back in 2013.  He is about to release his latest album (Perfect World, Perfect Beat drops October 21), and we have been able to hear the album ahead of it’s release.  Expect more to come. Good stuff!

So, Americana Music Fest week is over, and Nashville can go back to being this cool city with live music happening every single night all over town….  Even with being an official attendee at AMA, I managed to see some amazing music, saw a bunch of old friends, made some new friends, and discovered some new music which will be showing up on E2TG soon…

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Number Three Mix

One of the best side-effects of writing this blog (and certainly not one I expected or intended) has been the incredible people I have met.  Honestly, that is one of the main reasons, I have kept this up for three years.  One of the very first people I “met” way back in the early stages of Ear to the Ground was Howard Rabach.  Last night, I was fortunate enough to meet him in person and have an enjoyable dinner. Tonight, I get to see him again – playing bass for The Grey A for their CD Release Show at The Stone Fox.

This is the instrumental first track from the Evangeline Made album featuring an All-Star band of Cajun musicians that includes the legendary Michael Doucet. I could not find a video of this song, but the song was written by Marc Savoy, and I found a video of The Savoy Family playing and people dancing.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Grand Company Mix

Introducing:  The E2TG Hall of Fame —– Ta Da!

You may be asking, “WTF?” Basically, it comes down to this: My blogging consultant told me I need to start being more controversial to attract more readers to my site. Whenever, I see posts about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they always seem to attract highly opinionated comments. So, I thought if I came up with my own Hall of Fame, it might create controversy and angry comment wars which might “go viral” as the kids say.*

*All of the proceeding is true except for the following: I don’t have a blogging consultant. I rarely read comment wars about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the only thing likely to “go viral” over here is an actual virus.

Really, I got to thinking about the artists I consider E2TG featured artist. When I began writing E2TG way back in the spring of 2011, I began naming a Band of the Week just about every week.  I did this for a about year, before switching to a featured artist designation – wherein I would name ten or so “featured artists” every month and put them in “heavy rotation” for the remainder of that month.  That carried on for just over six months. Since, then I keep featuring new music, but I haven’t really been very organized about recognizing those bands.  So… I decided to take stock – at this random point in E2TG history and go back and formally recognize all of the bands that I consider part of the E2TG family.  To do so, I decided to use the TAG “cloud” on the sidebar and begin with the most tagged bands and work my way down.  So, for the near future, I am going to name three, two or one band every day to join the E2TG HofF.  It’s a purely honorary title – as currently it does not come with a cash prize nor is there an actual Hall.

I am going to create and maintain a Sidebar linked Page for the Hall of Fame artists – with videos, songs, links, an on-going web-store and more.  It’s still under construction, so will update when I have a Page set up.
