Kind of a dreary, post-time change Monday in Nashville – although the sun was out this morning enough to blind me as I drove in to work.

It’s a another Music City Monday – time to feature songs some how, some way connected to Nashville, Tennessee.

“Former Queen of Spain” by Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies

Pretty cool way to start of the week, one of my favorite Brian Wright songs from his live sets from the album Bluebird with his old band, the Waco Tragedies. 

“Songs from Beneath the Lake” by The Shakers

This is the title track from the album by this band that featured Robert Logue and Oscar Rice of Royal Court of China.  The band created a unique and wonderful mix of southern gothic mysticism and atmospheric folk music – Rebecca Stout provided haunting vocals that served as another instrument. One of my favorite bands from the late 80s to early 90s Nashville music scene.

“Thought You Needed Me” by Carl Anderson

Nashville by way of Charlottesville, VA – another excellent track from Risk of Loss which was one of my favorites of 2015.

“Everything It Takes” by Loretta Lynn feat. Elvis Costello

There is so much Nashville here… let’s start with the song which was written by Lynn (who has been called the Queen of Country Music) and Todd Snider (one of the founding fathers of the “new” East Nashville music scene).  The song comes from Lynn’s new album Full Circle which was produced by Lynn’s daughter and John Carter Cash – at the Cash Cabin Studio.  The song is also a duet with Elvis Costello whose own Nashville roots go back to 1981 when he recorded his Almost Blue album at Studio B on Music Row.

“The Other Man” by Tim McNary

Careful and long time E2TG readers will remember we featured several McNary tracks a few years ago.  Well, he is back with an excellent new album called Above the Trees.  The album is due out on April 8, but you can get a 4 song sampler at Noisetrade right now.

“Glory Hallelujah” by Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies

My cup runneth over… a second Brian Wright song on the shuffle and it another one of my favorites from his electrifying live sets.  Wright is a vital part of the Nashville music community, and a heck of a nice guy.

“Lower You Can Go” by Tim Carroll

Speaking of vital and nice guys.  Tim Carroll’s long running Rock and Roll Happy Hour (every Friday 6-8:30p.m.) has been heating up in recent weeks. I think is one of the best deals in this city and always a good time.  A great way to kick off the weekend.  This is an inspirational song taken from a recent CD sampler that you can only get at a Tim Carroll gig.  Remember, if you are feeling down, there is always lower you can go!

“Isn’t It Strange?” by Charlie Hager

We have another track from Charlie Hager’s new album American Saga.  The Nashville CD Release Party will be held Thursday night at the Crying Wolf in East Nashville.

Welcome back… No shuffle yesterday because I was off work for Veteran’s Day.  Lot’s to recap…

Tuesday night, I attended the weekly $2 Tuesday show at The 5 Spot.  As it always is, it was a great time at a great price.  Included: a second opportunity to see Brock Zeman and Blair Hogan – who killed it.  Bob Lewis with great band that included my old friend Joe Bidewell plus Lemuel Hayes and Issac Anthony.  Plus Derek Hoke’s always awesome set, and the late night spot was rocked hard by new Nashvillian K. Phillips whose band included by friend Steven Cooper.

Since, I was off I got to hang out in the studio and observe the making of Darrin Bradbury’s next album.  A lot of people are going to be surprised by his turn toward gangsta rap, but I never question an artistic genius.

Last night, a great night of songwriters at Mad Donna’s featuring the always awesome Kiely Schlesinger who was backed by Drew Kohl – who did a killer version of Springsteen’s “Atlantic City”, Violet Delancey who was backed by a great band that included Andrew Leahey on guitar, and Lindsay Ellyn who was awesome as always backed by Raun Schultz and Buddy Woodward and for the first time by fiddle player – Holly Parks. 

In the midst of all that, I wrote a review of the (still fairly new) Sara Syms album, Way Back Home.  The title track (coincidently) showed up in the shuffle today, so I will post the links when I get to that song…

“Frying Eggs (The Roadkill Song)” by Darrin Bradbury

Decades from now, musical historians will look back and note that this was the first sign of Darrin’s eventual turn toward gangsta rap… what is more gangsta than singing about a dead raccoon?  Seriously, this our last track to post from The Story of Bob – the record which made my face famous…  By the way, I did not find a video of this song, but I did find a nine year old clip of Darrin.

“Saint Francis” by Gretchen Peters

Another from Hello Cruel World. Gretchen Peters is, hands down,  one of the best songwriters  working today.

“Side of the Mountain” by Carl Anderson

Another chance to talk about Carl Anderson’s amazing album Risk of Loss. The year is almost over and this is still on my mind as one of the best of 2015.

“Goodbye Marie” by Gear Daddies

Billy’s Live Bait – along with Let’s Go Scare Al – were part of the soundtrack of particularly interesting portion of life.  I think the songs (as all great songs do) have held up well in the decades since they were released.

“Florida Water” by Jesse and Noah

Another from Jesse and Noah – this one is from their Driven Back album of original songs.  It is a tribute to their home state.

“Way Back Home” by Sara Syms

As I mentioned in the Intro – I have written a review of Sara Syms’ awesome new album, Way Back Home.  This is the opening and title track which sets the tone for the album.  My review can be found on No Depression and right here on Ear to the Ground.

“Walking Down the Road” by Tymon Dogg

Tymon Dogg is a stalwart of the London underground music scene – whose credits include being a part of Joe Strummer’s last band, Mescalero’s.  He also contributed to Sandinista! and Combat Rock by the Clash.  Made of Light is the name of his new album which was released last week. Check it out!

“Tears Fall the Same” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

We return to local favorite, Tiffany Huggins Grant with another track from her album, Jonquil Child which also has to be on my list of favorites for the year.

“Motel Matches” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

And, we close out the shuffle with some classic Elvis from Get Happy!  Get Happy! was Elvis Costello’s fourth album – his third with the Attraction, and it was released in early 1980 and remains one of my all time favorites.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Not Punk Mix

So… even by Nashville standards, the middle part of this week has been an embarrassment of musical riches. I already recapped Tuesday night.  Last night for me, began at The 5 Spot – the preeminent East Nashville dive bar for week one of Kevn Kinney’s July Residency.  Kinney in and of himself would have made the show noteworthy, but we was joined by Gibb Droll on guitar and E2TG favorite Shelly Colvin jumped in a couple of songs for background vocals, and Todd Snider was there to add some awesome harmonica to a couple of songs.  The last song of the show included all of the above covering The Replacements’ classic “Here Comes a Regular” which Kinney managed to morph into the refrain from Nirvana’s “All Apologies”.  It was a truly magical moment which would have been more than enough to make the night complete… and that was all before 8:00….

After that show ended, I hoofed it over to The Basement East in time to see Tiffany Huggins Grant perform a short solo set of songs from her brand new album (which I’m sure you already own since I’ve been telling you about it…right?)  Her incredible voice was in evidence.

By this point, rumors were circulating about the happenings back at The 5 Spot.  Thanks for Mark Robinson and Sue Havlish for the lift back over there.  It was the 2nd Anniversary of Jerry Pentecost’s Country and Western Wednesday – on the 2nd Wednesday of every month features classic Country and Western covers performed by an awesome house band with stellar guest stars.  For the anniversary show, they pulled out all the stops…  I’ll leave some awesome people off, but the guest included Derek Hoke, Cory Chisel, Elizabeth Cook, Amanda Shires, Bobby Bare Jr., Chance McCoy, Wayne Moss (of Barefoot Jerry), Jim Lauderdale, and incredibly the one and only Lucinda Williams.  The club was packed out, but I had a good time connecting with friends and experiencing the moments…

Needless to say (or maybe needed to be said), I think I’m going to stay in tonight and recover… but the shuffle goes on and we have a good one today…. so….

First up, the late Mississippi Bluesman with the title track from an album that was released in 1998 but which features recordings from a decade earlier.

A World Café Session from the legendary North Carolina Indie Rock band with a track from their 2013 10th album, I Hate Music.

Moving on… our penultimate track from our revisit of Paul Simon’s Graceland, and one of #E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury’s favorite songs.

The hits keep coming… as Elvis creates a short burst of pure pop heaven with a track from Get Happy!

From Finland… Artur U and the New City Limits are high on my list of favorite artists I “discovered” this year.  Their latest album is Holiday from Eternity.  I really dig this song.

“Your Frown’s My Friend” by Greg Summerlin

My friend Too Much Country included this track on the current “Summer” themed Feel Bad for You mixtape – playing fast and loose with the theme, which can be forgiven because the song is so good.  Greg Summerlin is from Birmingham, Alabama (I think). This is taken from an album called The Young Meteors which came out a decade ago.

“Color of Her Eyes” by Gear Daddies

Another track from the brand new Dale Watson album, Call Me Insane.  This one has a bit of Western Swing in it… Dale Watson is still proudly carrying the Ameripolitan banner.

“Beaten to the Punch” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Continuing a shuffle that musically is all over the map… I was just talking with a friend about the underappreciated genius that is Elvis Costello’s fourth studio album.  It is the first release following Costello’s infamous run in with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlett.

“In Heaven” by A Color Engine

Another track from the album, Voyage Underwater; 56 Knots.  This one happens to be a cover of a song from the David Lynch cult classic, Eraserhead. A Color Engine draws a line between long-time E2TG favorite Don Ryan and one-time Ear to the Ground featured artist Elephant Goes West.   It’s a tasty slab of experimental indie folk goodness.

“Passion” by [debut]

We close out the day with another track from the album Postcards from Berlin.  The song sounds a bit like it could be a great lost Depeche Mode song (and I mean that as the highest compliment).

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Stand in Line to Die Mix

Greetings… I am in a much better place than yesterday.  Still a little rushed, but I can get through this shuffle…   

First up my recap of CXCW15 Day 5:  I am way behind on my couchin’, but there was an awesome Irish showcase that featured the legendary Glen Hansard.  Plus videos from my friend Eli Rhodes who plays with Todd Farrell and the Dirty Birds  and also writes some amazing songs of his own.  Look for a solo record soon.  #E2TG favorites Tim Lee 3 return to the couch with another great video, and the closing video of the day came from Nashville’s own Will Kimbrough playing a song he wrote with Sam Baylor from Will’s legendary band Will and the Bushmen.  Sam passed away this week.  Life is short, ya’ll…

“This Ol’ World” by Young America

The dudes from Young America are currently divided between their native Georgia and Nashville, and still working toward the release of their highly anticipated album Good Old Fashioned Pain.  They recently released a 3 song EP preview/teaser of songs from the album.  This song is on that release.  The EP is called Pain, Rain, and the Mundane, and if you Spotify well you can now Spotify the EP over there.

“Feed Them Monkeys” by Eight O’Five Jive

Nothing says Friday like a good old fashioned jump blues/jive song… from the album Too Many Men…

“Mechanical Dream” by Artur U and the New City Limits

Another song from the album Holiday from Eternity.  The band is from Helsinki, Finland.  They have a pretty diverse sound which I like, and this song compared to the most recent song we featured, really shows off that diversity.

“Hard Times” by Syd Straw

Another from Surprise.  This one features a band that includes Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner, plus guest vocals by the incomparable John Doe (X, The Knitters, Flesheaters).  The song is a Stephen Foster composition.

“Queen’s Tattoos” by Aztec Camera

Originally the b-side of the Pillar to Post 7″, this song was added as a bonus track to the 1991 CD Reissue of High Land, Hard Rain.  Aztec Camera were one of my favorite bands, and I still dig listening to their music.

“Chromatic Death” by Stormtroopers of Death

A :45 second track from the album Speak English or Die (1985). s.o.d. was a hardcore punk/thrash metal side project started by Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian.  Yes, I’m awake and yes, my sinuses are clear now…

“Hand in Hand” by The Danbury Lie

The Danbury Lie right on the heels of their January release Scattered Moments of Connection, released a brand new album called Chose Your Delusion on the Ides of March (March 15 for those who don’t know their Julius Caesar).  This is our first listen to that new album, and I have to say, I like what I hear so far.  Good reminder about why The Danbury Lie are one of my favorites.

The legendary punk rock cover band plays the Dolly Parton classic from their 2006 album Love Their Country.  Coincidently, I recently watched the Nashville-theme episode of Drunk History in which this song plays a vital role…

“The One After 909” by The Beatles

So, this month the Feel Bad for You folks who put out awesome mixtape compilations every month had a theme of short songs.  So, expect a bunch of short songs to filter their way through my shuffles in the next few weeks or so.  Oddly, no Minutemen songs made their list, but relax, I have some Minutemen already cued up…  this track is actually a snippet of The One after 909 with some chatter from the Rooftop concert.

“Selfish Lover” by Gary Floater

Another from the short songs compilation.  This one from legendary country outsider Gary Floater off of a new release called Who Cares.

“Jimmy Jazz” by The Clash

The love affair between the shuffle function and The Clash continues with the lounge-sounding song from London Calling. 

“11 O’clock Friday Night” by Hamilton Leithauser

The second song we’ve had from Black Hours the 2014 album by Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen.

“Yesterday’s Cakes” by Cropdusters

Raucous UK band from their 1989 album, If the Sober Go to Heaven….  I really dig this song – for reference only – think of The Pogues at a hoedown.

“Respirator” by Dead and Lovely

Another track from John and Jayda of Nashville by way of Pennsylvania from their EP Heavy which is awesome.  Really sorry I missed them last month at the Building, but I hope to catch up with them soon.

“Sweet Guy” by Paul Kelly Feat. Vika Bull

This song is originally from the 1989 album So Much Water So Close to Home by Paul Kelly and the Messengers.  This version sung by Vika Bull is from Kelly’s latest album The Merri Soul Sessions.  I really dig this song.

“An Accident” by The Transcendents

Paul Kelly is from Australia, and while we are down under (as somebody says), let’s move over to New Zealand for another cool song from the eponymously titled album by The Transcendents.  The thing I love about writing this blog is being able to discover incredible music from all over the world and then to be able to write about it and hopefully turn someone else on to it. 

“Put the Bone In” by Soul Asylum

After all this time, I just realized or found out that this song from Soul Asylum’s Hang Time is a cover of the b-side of Terry Jacks hit song “Season in the Sun”.  Coincidently (or not depending upon your view of coincidence), at the end of this recording, Soul Asylum quotes The Beatles’ famous line from the Rooftop Concert, “…I hope we passed the audition”.

“Riot Act” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Another great song from Elvis’ Get Happy album!!

“Last Time Around” by Jason and the Scorchers

“You’re the final survivor is my heart’s ghost town.”  The lead track from the album Lost and Found.  Still one of the best rock and roll bands around!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Blue Turns Black and White Mix

Today we have an E2TG signature mixture of old and new music, the return of favorites and the first appearance by some soon to be new favorites.  We have it all here in black and white with a tint of blue added for effect…. enjoy!

“For Your Eyes” by The Bell Hours

I grabbed this off Noisetrade… The Bell Hours are an indie-folk band from Denver, CO.  This is from their EP called Easy Weather.  I downloaded the EP last night, and so this was my first chance to listen to them.  I definitely want to hear more.

“The Candle and the Flame” by fIREHOSE

Ed Crawford, Mike Watt, and George Hurley from their 1986 debut album, Ragin’ Full On.  fIREHOSE in a mellow mood.

“Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)” by Father John Misty

In other bit of coincidental shuffle timing, we have a song off the forthcoming (due tomorrow) album by Joshua Tillman (called I Love You, Honeybear).  We heard the actual track, not the Midi version which was released for streaming by Father John.

“Kizza Me” by Big Star

One of my favorite tracks on one of my favorite albums – Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers.  This was taken from the Alex Chilton retrospective album called 19 years.

“Memory Deluxe” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

I was honored to receive the album  Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2, in my inbox via Flicknife Records. The British label released some classic music in the 1980s including albums by Hawkwind, Alien Sex Fiend, and the 1987 predecessor to this album, I Knew Buffalo Bill which featured Gluck along with an all-star band that featured members of Swell Maps, Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution plus the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce of Gun Club.  The label was resurrected in 2012, and this sequel album features Gluck and Robert Coyne who is the son of the late, lengendary British musician Kevin Coyne. 

“(Takin’ These) Blues to the Highway” by The Sky Kings

Another great sounding song from the very long anticipated album by the early 90s supergroup, The Sky Kings featuring Bill Lloyd (Foster and Lloyd), John Cowan (New Grass Revivial), Patrick Simmons (Doobie Brothers), and Rusty Young (Poco). The album called 1992 was released by Sony this past December.’

“Black and White World” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

The only thing better than an Elvis song in the shuffle is two Elvis songs in the shuffle.

“Blue Turns Black” by Joe Nolan

The title track from the forthcoming remastered album by Nashville singer/songwriter/writer Joe Nolan.  Love it! 

“Female Mudwrestling” by Phranc

From Folksinger.  To be clear, Phranc does not like female mudwrestling.  Special note to Phranc, do not attempt to find a video for this song on You Tube – just saying.

The title track from the album of the same name… see what I did there?  This folk duo are from San Francisco and their name is a reference to the title of a James Joyce story from The Dubliners.  Grabbed this track from an ATO Records sampler, and I want to hear more.

My day got real – really quickly.  This is off their self-titled debut.  The video is from a benefit show I attended in December – put on by Lockeland Springsteen – who run a blog or something here in Nashville… whatever… 😉

Appropriately named Bubblegum band from New Jersey with a retroactive Ramones cover.  Seriously, the Ramones covered this as a bonus track on their retrospective Ramones Mania album.  It was the title track from a 1969 album by 1910 Fruitgum Company.

“I’m Your Broken Dog” by The Bones of JR Jones

J.R. Linaberry lays down some of the rawest, raddest rootsiest music around.  This song is on Noisetrade’s Best of What’s Next sampler, and in a cursory search, I could not find it anywhere else. So head over…
