Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Riff Raff Mix

Well… here I am on a Friday with a lot of ground to cover. So, I am going to riff for a little while… I like riffing. I use to call this kind of writing – Stream of Madness writing… meaning, I just let the words fly, without any inclination to edit in order to mask my insanity….

Let’s post a picture and then we will jump into the madness…



It’s a great day! Why? Well it is Friday! That would normally be enough, but a couple of cool things to report…

1.  Tonight at The Family Wash – a swell time including a 25 minute preview of a new documentary about musicians, plus poetry and music – including our good friends from Knoxville – Tim Lee 3.  Plus Special guest Amelia White – who we saw back in September at The Five Spot.  Should be a fun time.

2.  Tomorrow – October 12, 2013 Marks the official release date of the self-titled album by my friend, James Crawford.  We’ve had this one in our playlist for a few week, and as I’ve reported, this has rapidly become one of my favorite albums on the Fall. We have the album linked in our Webstore which should become active to tomorrow – OR… you can head over to James Crawford’s Website and Facebook page.

3.  We have a shuffle to bring you…

“Til I Find You” by The Howlin Brothers (this is from The Sun Studios Session which we nabbed off of Noisetrade but which will be released October 15. Bonus Trivia: In the 1989 Jim Jarmusch film Mystery Train – there is a scene where the characters are outside of Sun Studios, and you can see the apartment building where I lived in the background. The movie was filmed in the Summer of ’88 which is when I moved to Memphis. So… Oh, The Howlin Brothers kick serious butt – so check it out.)

“She Shot a Hole in My Soul” by The Box Tops (mmm huh. Yep… and yeah Nashville to Memphis and we stick in Memphis for this Pop-Soul classic )

“Harder” by Nava Hotel  (I keep digging this Nashville band more and more every time I hear them. Back to Nashville ;-))

“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by Devo (from Are We Not Men? We Are Devo… how to you deconstruct a classic song and make it your own?  I don’t know ask Devo. By the way, I just some an article link (which I didn’t follow) which said that Johnny Lydon almost became the singer for Devo in 1978. I have no idea if that is true or how “almost” it was, but now think about Johnny Rotten singing this song… go!  and as for a Memphis/Nashville connection- um… well, I think the Stones were heavily influenced by Memphis music… whew!)

“There Will Always Be A Way” by The Autumn Defense (The Autumn Defense were one of the highlights of the Americanarama event at Grimey’s  – there is your Nashville connection – back in September.  They do the 70sish lush pop harmonies about as good as anybody in the business. That is them in the picture up above the Jump)

The new album from The Great American Novel came out of Mama Coco’s.  Today’s song by NYC based Odetta Hartman comes from a brand new 23 song compilation which was released by Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen yesterday.  Link – HERE. Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Camp Crystal Lake Mix

 I am a long-time triskaidekaphobe, but so far (knock on wood), today has been pretty good.  We had a change in the weather here in Nashville, and the heat and humidity finally broke into a sunny and rather cool day.  Which is good because it is really hard to get excited about the return of Pumpkin Spice anything when it’s mid 90s and humid.  It just is.

Well circumstances being circumstantial, I don’t have the hoped for music explosion today – just a regular old shuffle. Still, as regular old shuffles go, this one is pretty sweet.

Good morning, I am back after a day off… my new earphones are still In-Transit, so today I presenting my mix of yesterday’s drive home and today’s drive in to work.  Jump through to the marvelous musical mixture…

Yesterday on my hot and sweaty drive home, I listened to the following songs:

“Nashville” by Casey Black (It’s always cool to hear a song about the city that has been my home for the past twenty-something years. It’s also cool anytime I can hear a Casey Black song)

“Paul Revere” by Beastie Boys (a history lesson and the first of three by Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock)

“Most People” by Dawes (This.)

“She’s Crafty” by Beastie Boys (I don’t think they are talking about Wendy Russell, but I could be wrong)

“That’s the Story of My Life” by The Velvet Underground (That’s the difference between wrong and right)

“My Whole Life” by EdTang (Seriously though EdTang is very cool. Check it out)

“Frank Lloyd Wright” by Joseph Mooradian (a singer-songwriter from Nashville. I first heard him sing at a coffee house show at our church a few years ago.  A mesmerizing vocal style. Check out his Soundcloud for tons of great originals and covers)

“Time to Get Ill” by Beastie Boys (song #3 of this mix from the Boys!)

“This Morning” by Human Face (New music from UK band Human Face!)

“The Witching Hour” by The Gypsy West  (I don’t always listen to psych prog rock stuff from Brooklyn, but when I do, it is likely to be The Gypsy West)

“Crows on a Phone Line” by Let’s Active (One of my favorite songs.  I don’t remember if I first loved this song because I used to write a bunch of bad poetry about crows or if I wrote a bunch of bad poetry about crows because I loved this song.  I’m not sure it matters at this point, but the bottom line: This song is awesome, most of my old poetry about crows was not awesome.)

“Till the End of the Day” (Kinks Cover) by Big Star (I never go far, without a little Big Star… seriously though, a classic Kinks tune done by Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens and company – just about all I need…)

“One More Time” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza – which is truly one of my favorite albums of the year. Joseph Russell’s voice just resonates at the perfect pitch in soul)

“Fields of Clover” by The Box Tops (Before Big Star – 16 year old Alex Chilton recorded what would become a number one hit in 1967. That was “The Letter”. “Fields of Clover” came a year or so later – and was the B-side to a song called “Choo-Choo Train”)

“The Remnant” (Live) by Josh Ritter (recorded at a 2010 show in Dublin.  The Remnant is on the Idaho singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album – So Runs the World Away)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Bobby Freaking Keys Mix

I’m doing a super quick mix today, but for good reason, I used my lunch hour to walk a couple of blocks to see legendary (I mean LEGENDARY) sax man Bobby Keys with his excellent band that includes former Georgia Satellite and current leader of Homemade Sin and member of The Bluefields Dan Baird. I only had time to stay for the first part, but they ripped through a set that included a few Stones songs, a George Harrison number, and Joe Cocker’s version of the Box Tops’ song.  All of which featured Mr. Keys in their original versions.
