Okay… this has to be a fast one.  I walked over to the Southern Festival of Books during my lunch break (when I usually write and post the blog) to see Julie Christensen and part of Stone Cupid (Chris Tench and Sergio Webb). They killed it as usual.

Last night – quickly – some highlights: Week 2 Campfire Propaganda Residency… guests Ariel Buie and Actual Wolf.  Megan Palmer – on keyboard playing a new song and a John Moreland song. Nellie Clay with Actual Wolf, Tim Easton as usual, Brian Wright – fighting jet lag and killing it (with Aaron Lee Tasjan for a couple of songs), Darrin Bradbury and Megan Palmer – Darrin leading his own more of meditation…

Coverfest at Basement East!!!  Major props to Terry Rickards for putting this together.  Everyone was great, and I don’t have time for a full report, but I will just say Los Colognes doing Bob Dylan’s Infidels album in its entirety and nailing it and Allen Thompson Band as The Eagles were my absolute favorites (it was all good). The Eagles segment was so much fun!

Okay… so I’m running late with today’s shuffle, but I have a good reason.  At lunch, when I usually finishing writing this thing and get it posted to the Ear to the Ground Facebook Page (which you should “Like” if you haven’t but I digress), I went to the Downtown Public Library to see a songwriting round with Marshall Chapman, Mary Gauthier, and Malcolm Holcomb – because that is what we do at lunchtime in Nashville….

Onward, I have to be quick – I’m heading out in a bit to see three people I’ve featured on Ear to the Ground at $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot in East Nashville – Joe Nolan, Angela Easterling, and Carl Anderson are all on the bill.  Did I mention it’s $2 Tuesday?

“Doing Laundry Late on a Cold Southern City Night” by Bashful Hips

Another from the album, Too Old for a Coming of Age Story… I think the song title pretty much sums this one up.  Dig it.

I connected to this through some of my Toronto friends – like Valued Customer (but I cannot remember who posted it).  Gorgeous music.  Really! Check it out!

“Radio Love” by The Poorhouse Says

Another from the St. Louis band. The album is called, As Patterns Go, and I recommend it.  Crisp Americana/folk-rock stuff.

“Everything Changes” by Judah and the Lion

This band is enthusiastic and youthful, and singing about the passage of time and how things change.  Just wait… just wait. From a Noisetrade Sampler.  The song is on their debut album, Kids These Days which was released just about a year ago. I’ll bet a bunch has changed since then.

“Pretty Vacant” (live) by Sex Pistols

Because it seems almost obligatory to have a bootleg quality live Sex Pistols track in the shuffle at some point, and why not now? “We’re so pretty…” 

 

“Little Tiny Lady in a Big Black Vest” by Batkhi Dahn

I have a bunch of Batkhi Dahn and other assorted Hayden Nork side projects in my playlist, so no you are not imagining that one of them comes up just about every day.  Like the first song in today’s shuffle, this title pretty much tells the story of the song… or does it?  

“Betty Was Black (and Willie Was White)” by Tommy Womack

A couple of weeks ago – back at the tail end of Tomato Fest, Tommy Womack played his first official show after his serious car accident.  He was backed by the Mark Robinson Band and joined by the supremely talented Lisa Oliver Gray.  It was a pretty awesome way to end a pretty awesome day.  He did this song – which was first released on the self-titled album by The Bis-Quits, the early 90s band that featured Tommy, Will Kimbrough, Mike Grimes (of Grimey’s and the Basements (West and East)), and Tommy Meyer on drums.  Later, Todd Snider included the song on his album Happy to Be Here.  This version comes from Tommy Womack’s album Washington D.C. 

“Those Eyes” by Sammy Brue

Recently, I have had a couple of opportunities to reflect on having hope for the future based upon the incredible music being made by young people.  If I made a list, Sammy Brue would be up near the top if not at the top.  This fourteen year old singer-songwriter from Utah is not just a great young songwriter, he is a great songwriter.  He recently played showcase at the Newport Folk Fest with some of the finest people working today – like Aaron Lee Tasjan, John Moreland, and Joe Fletcher (who will be wrapping up his residency at The 5 Spot tomorrow night with Brian Wright).  I am quite sure Sammy Brue held his own just fine.  Here’s to many years of watching Sammy Brue continue to grow and improve.  It’s going to be scary good!

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Doing the Horizontal Mix

A frustrating morning commute – made all the better by an eclectic ten song shuffle… enjoy…

“I’d like to know what I want without it being advertised.” A beautiful song of the road from the one and only Darrin Bradbury.

“Moons of Jupiter” by Ron Muga from Wonderful Doom

Another lovely song this one from Ron Muga.  I had some technical difficulties before, some I glad to be featuring these songs finally.

“Truckin’ Trees for Christmas” by Red Simpson from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Mixtape/Truckers’ Christmas

Is it a coincidence that there were two country music singers named “Red” who were notable for Trucker songs?  This one goes out to all those who drive long distances day after to day so that we can conveniently get the things we want and need.

“Trick” by Joe Sundell from The Hat Thief

This is one of my favorite records of the year, and this lively, old-time sounding song is one of my favorites off of it.

“Santa Claus” by Thee Headcoatees from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Mixtape/Sisters of Suave

Thee Headcoatees are a 90s British Garage Rock band who sound like they could be 60s Garage Band.  This song may or may not sound like their song, “Davey Crockett”. 

“5th String is Broken” by Sammy Brue from Bootleg Sessions VOL I

For a second day in a row, we have 13 year old phenom Sammy Brue in the shuffle. Maybe Santa can bring him a 5th String for Christmas?

“Santa’s Doing the Horizontal Twist” by Kay Martin and Her Body Guards from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Mixtape/Kinky Christmas Songs

At this point, I feel compelled to point out that the shuffle literally comes from a random shuffle of songs in a playlist I curate.  So, while I must take responsibility for adding this song to said playlist.*  I cannot be held accountable for this showing up right after a song by a 13 year old boy.  Spoiler Alert: It should also be pointed out that the character mentioned in the song is not actually Santa.  *David “Popa Tunes” Horton sent me the mixtape. 😉 

“Country Nugget” by Blackfoot Gypsies from Dandee Cheeseball

I just heard that Blackfoot Gypsies are playing The 5 Spot a week from today with Cory Brannan and bunch of other folks.  I implore you to check this band out whenever and wherever you get the chance.  Also, I actually checked to make sure my Music Player was operating correctly when this song was playing.  That is a compliment.

“Fish Plant Rebellion” by Ike Reilly from Am I Still the One for You?/Poison the Hit Parade

The last time I posted an Ike Reilly song and tweeted about it, he replied and said I should make sure to tell my friends that the songs I have been featuring are all available (free and easy) via the fine folks at NoiseTrade.  If you are interested (and you should be interested), I am going to post the widget to make it even easier.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Loot in the Boot Mix

“Where Was Baby Jesus Born?” by Annie Sellick from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory

From Sellick’s 2013 jazzy Christmas album which we featured heavily last year comes this soulful number.

“Surrounded” by Dan Coyle from Perfect Word. Perfect Beat.

Another great song from Dan Coyle’s awesome newish album.  Please check him out if you haven’t done so yet – you won’t be disappointed.

“The Body Snatcher, 1945” by Sci-Fi Romance from October

Yeah, Yeah… it’s December not October.  Time for Christmas tunes not Halloween/Horror-based songs… but seriously folks great music has no season.  I dig this whole album.  This song is based upon the 1945 film based upon a Robert Louis Stevenson short story and produced and adapted for the screen by the legendary Val Lewton. Val Lewton is notable for his work with RKO pictures where he was given lurid titles and a low budget and managed to make some truly remarkable films – like I Walked with a Zombie.  In the hands of E2TG favorite and CXCW alum Vance Kotrla aka Sci-Fi Romance, the film is reimagined as a damn fine song.

“East Nashville” by Sammy Brue from Bootleg Sessions VOL I

Sammy Brue appears on the cover of Justin Townes Earle’s latest album as a younger doppelganger of JTE.  He also happens to be a very talented young singer/songwriter in his own right.  He is from Salt Lake City, Utah, but his Nashville connection is strong – the album cover previously mentioned was photographed in Fannie Mae Dees Park in Nashville – popularly known as Dragon Park. And the song we feature today is named for one of my current favorite parts of the city.  

“Pedestrians” by The Slaughterhouse Chorus from The Entrée – A Built4BBQ Sampler/Download Single

The Slaughterhouse Chorus are from Albany, NY.  They play a rocking mix of Americana and Punk.  I had the opportunity to see them live in 2013 when they did a tour with The End Men.  This song is from the Built4BBQ sampler, and The Slaughterhouse Chorus are a major driving force behind this awesome collective.

“3-9-4” by Lemonheads from Hate Your Friends

Taking things all the way back to 1987 and the debut album by Boston punk band, The Lemonheads.  Recommended if you only know It’s Ashame about Ray and the Mrs. Robinson cover…

“Put the Loot in the Boot” by Mae West from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Sampler/Wild Christmas

The year I was born, Mae West – the Hollywood actress best know for her provocative roles in films of the 30s and 40s, made a Rock and Roll Christmas album (7 Christmas songs and one Beatles’ cover). I feel like this completes some unspecified step in our quest to cover every conceivable form of music.

“Tortured Birds” by Ron Muga from Wonderful Doom

Another great song from this New York Singer/Songwriter.  Ron Muga’s music can be found on Bandcamp. Check him out.

“Let Me Hang Your Stockings In Your Christmas Tree” by Roosevelt Sykes from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Sampler

A suggestive and absolutely fun Holiday number from Blues/Boogie Woogie piano legend Roosevelt Sykes.

“So Lonesome I Could Fly” by Marti Jones from My Tidy Doily Dream

We close things out with simply a beautiful song by one of my all time favorite singer/songwriters.  This is from her 2002 album.  I have to give a shout out/mention to the event which inspired me to add this to my playlist at this time…  If you are in the vicinity (or can be) of Woodbridge Middle School in Woodbridge, NJ tomorrow night there is a remarkable song circle going down featuring Ms. Jones, her husband (and producer extraordinaire + songwriting genius in his own right) Don Dixon, Marshall Crenshaw, and Richard Barone.  HERE is the link to the Facebook event. I will have to comfort myself knowing I got to see Marti Jones and Don Dixon in Nashville in the early 90s.
