Wide Open Wednesday Shuffle – Summertime Thing Mix

Trying a new thing here at Ear to the Ground…. every Wednesday (or at least this Wednesday… or maybe some Wednesday’s) I am going to Shuffle up all the songs in my phone’s memory and see what happens…  Usually, the Morning Shuffles come from a playlist called “Current Stuff” which includes… well current stuff and basically all the recent adds plus some random stuff to keep things interesting.  Songs are moved off of the playlist as they are featured and new music is added all the time (as memory allows).  Beyond that playlist, I have approximately 4,000+ songs stored in my phone at any given time. As you might expect, it’s a weird collection of some really interesting music that I’ve collected in various ways over the years.  I have to say, the fact that Mary Gauthier and Chuck Prophet were the first two songs that came up… I am feeling optimistic.

“Sideshow” by Mary Gauthier from The Foundling

Mary Gauthier is on a major roll of late, which has included stints at the Grammy Museum and a groundbreaking set at the venerable Grand Ole Opry.  This song is from her album of a couple of years back, The Foundling and demonstrates just how worthy she is of all of the acclaim.

One of my favorite “summer” songs of all time.  It just makes me feel good every time I hear it.

“Real Full-Time Guy” by Drive He Said from Multitudes

Drive He Said was the project formed by Maxim Ludwig when the Santa Fe Seven broke up.  Maxim was one of the very first artists featured on Ear to the Ground back in 2011.  He has since returned to recording under his own name, and in the playlist is a recent performance from Europe.

 

“Our Last Fight” by Scala and Kolacny Brothers from Scala and Kolacny Brothers

Let me get this straight… Scala is an all-girl choir.  And Kolacny Brothers are actual brothers named Kolacny.   Got it.  Known for their haunting covers of well-known songs, this original goes back to 2007 and their album One Winged Angel.

Coincidently timely, E2TG favorites The Danbury Lie just announced new music being dropped today on their Bandcamp site.   Today we have this seasonally appropriate song which was recorded in 2009 and released in 2013.

Nashville band Those Darlins’ 2013 album Blur the Lines was a break-through.  This song is from their 2011 debut album. 

“Highways Long” by The Blind Owl Band from This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel
The Blind Owl Band from upstate New York play thoroughly modern music on old timey instruments.  Or maybe it’s the other way around… no I think I had it right the first time.  Whatever, they are awesome! 

“A Feather in Your Shadow” by The Lucky Jukebox Brigade from Pretty Well Damned

Another timely song, The Lucky Jukebox Brigade or just days away from releasing their long awaited new album, and we have their latest video in the playlist. 

“It’s a Wonderful Life” by Heath McNease with Pigeon John, Red Cloud, and Sintax the Terrific from Thrift Store Jesus

 Nothing to do with Jimmy Stewart – as far as I can tell, but some first rate, not so ordinary hip-hop from Georgia.

Another Random Mix of Great Music – April 4 Edition

Still irregularly posting, but working hard a number of fronts.

Here’s my latest collection of music that has crossed my ears and/or mind since we last visited.

1. “Gimme the Car” by Violent Femmes (This was a Bonus Track when the CD version of the Femmes self-titled debut was released.  I always dug this song.)

2. “Heavy Metal Boyz” by Gear Daddies (Back when I first started posting “Shuffles” on Facebook – even before the launch of Ear to the Ground – it seemed like there was a time when a Gear Daddies’ song showed up on my list almost everyday.  This song was always one of my favorites – along with a number of others…)

3. “No Depression” by Uncle Tupelo (If I have to explain why….)

4. The Rollins Band Live in 92 (News of a forthcoming Black Flag show in Nashville made me remember seeing The Rollins Band at 328 Performance Hall back in 1992 – the same year this video was made. Corrosion of Conformity was also on the bill.  At the time, I lived a few blocks away and actually walked to this show)

5.  “Chains” by Soul Asylum (somebody posted Whipped Cream and Other Delights by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.  For some reason, it made me think of this…)

6. “Alabama Pines” by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (heard this on the radio… such an exquisitely beautiful song)

7. The Bisquits partial reunion 2005 (So The Bisquits were a Nashville band that featured Tommy Womack, Will Kimbrough, Michael Grimes, and  Tommy Meyer.  Just last week, when I was at The Basement seeing Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray, I showed them a picture of The Bisquits which hangs on the wall between the two restrooms. About a week later, I hear that The Bisquits are reuniting to play Music City Roots on April 16. Coincidence or something more mysterious???)

8.  “Emotion Sickness” by Will Kimbrough  (speaking of Will Kimbrough – one of the busiest men in music – his latest solo album Sideshow Love has been climbing the Americana charts. Check it)

9.  “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple (a heard this on the radio, too.)

10. “Somebody to Love” by Queen (ditto)

11. “99 Luftballoons” by Nena (I got this song stuck in my head the other day for no reason.  Passing it on…)

12. “My Hometown” (Bruce Springsteen cover) by Jason Ringenberg (just surfing around You Tube… here you go)

13. Pujol at Grimeys for RSD 2012 – (Just heard Daniel Pujol will be playing Record Store Day at Grimey’s again this year.  Found this video from two years ago.)

“Telephone” by The Morning Pages (the Lady Gaga song.  It’s definitely a roots/Americanaish take on the song, but for some reason, I can’t help thinking that it sounds like if More Songs era Talking Heads covered this song after a long night of listening to Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo.  Or something.  I love it.)

“One More Try” by The Silks  (This Providence, RI band does a nifty cover of a Stones song.  Nifty indeed.)

“Highway to Hell” by Bhi Bhiman (from Substitute Preacher.  The St. Louis, MO singer/songwriter takes on the AC/DC classic, and totally owns it.)

“Cold War World Peace” by Fromage Bleu (from the  Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Compilation Section 4 – The triumphant return of 80’s minimal synth legends, Colchester’s very own Fromage Bleu.)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Walking Wogs Mix

Greetings from Nashville!  It’s Monday, and here at E2TG we are mixing things up a bit.  Typically, we shuffle up our “Rolling” playlist (meaning I add new songs and delete songs off the playlist as they come and go), this playlist is a working subset of all of the songs on my MP3 player. (Which in turn is a subset of all the songs in my music collection, but that is another story).  Anyway, today’s shuffle comes from all of the songs on my MP3 player.  We’ll get back to our playlist tomorrow, but I thought it might be interesting to occasionally open up our shuffle and see what happens.

“This Song Will Make You Love Me” by The Great American Novel (This is the opening track of the new The Great American Novel album which is released into the world tomorrow.  The album is called 😦 (The Frown Album). The song is a glorious rave-up which is guaranteed to have your feet moving.  I for one am looking forward to :(. – “no one is normal, just different types of weird if we could get our weirds together, we could get right outta here” )

“Last Stop” by Black Jake and the Carnies (From Watching, Waiting their most recent release.)

“Wogs Will Walk” by Cornershop (from Handcream for a Generation the 2002 4th album by Tjinder Singh and company.  The album featured Noel Gallagher on guitar.  I really dig this album which fuses, blends and forces together elements of Indie Rock, Eastern music, Reggae, and Hip-Hop into a rich and spicy soup of jamming good times.)

“I Gotta Get Shorty Out of Jail” by Andre Williams and The Sadies (Andre Williams is an Rhythm and Blues legend with a Punk spirit.  This album features Canadian Rock/Country band The Sadies who have also worked with the likes of John Doe and Neko Case )

“Up to Me” by Cosmonauts on Vacation (A Psychedelic/Spacy Rock and Roll band from Birmingham, Alabama)

“I’m Here” by Paul Jefferson (Paul Jefferson is  a country singer and songwriter from Nashville. This song is off his 1996 self-titled debut album)

“Watch Who You’re Calling Space Garbage Meteor Mouth” by Game Theory (a brief – :18 track off the 1987 album Lolita Nation)

“Sad, Like Hearts Can Be” by Evan Voytas (As far as I can tell in my brief “research” this song is not on any of the L.A. Pop artist’s albums)

“Been There Before” by Human Face (We recently got some new music from the UK band Human Face.  This track goes back to their 2012 album The Waiting Game)

“Rave On” by Julian Casablancas (A cover of a Sonny West penned Buddy Holly song.  This cover serves as the title track to the 2011 Tribute album which also featured Lou Reed, Kid Rock and just about everybody in between – and there is a lot of room in between Lou Reed and Kid Rock… just saying)

    “Kingston Advice” was the fifth song on the fifth side of landmark 1980 album Sandinista! by The Clash.  This 2007 tribute album features an all-star cast.  Here – the legendary band Camper Van Beethoven bring the dub in a killer version of this song. Since we could not find a video of this song, we included one for the Clash original and a bonus video of Camper Van Beethoven covering another Clash song.

Boston area Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Bleu is a Berklee trained musician who has written pop songs for the likes of The Jonas Brother, Demi Lovato, Hanson, and Selena Gomez.  He’s also made a string of excellent Indie albums of his own.  Today’s track goes back ten years to his major label debut.

The pioneering Alt-Country band Blue Mountain just broke up at the end of June of this year. They formed in 1993 and returned in 2007 after a six year hiatus.  Rainy Day could only have been more perfect if it had been raining today.

“A Question” by Bombadil from All That The Rain Promises (2011)


 

Our third song of the day from this North Carolina band who are getting ready to release their new album later this month.  This one comes from their previous studio full-length.  The song is about the sweetest, cutest song I’ve heard in a long time.

 Somehow I think Layne Montgomery is writing songs about my young adult life.  We continue to await the new The Great American Novel record. We have a couple of tracks from the new album in our queue and are just waiting for the shuffle gods to pull them up.

 I have a ton of ground to cover and as per usual not as much time I was would like… so forsaking the pleasantries….

Today, we begin with three previews of upcoming releases.  

Let’s begin with Grow the long awaited solo effort by Spencer Livingston of The Alternates (who were one of our early Bands of the Week about two years ago).  Grow is due out next Tuesday July 16, 2013.  The album features guests like Butch Norton (Lucinda Williams, Eels) and Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids).  One of the things that first caught my ear with The Alternates was Livingston’s super rich vocals, and he is in full voice on what I’ve had the chance to hear so far from the new record. American Songwriter premiered the first video from the album “Have a Little Faith”.   Spencer is heading East for a run of shows before returning to California for a couple of shows at the beginning of August.  You can grab all his tour dates here.

Easy Getting By is the Debut EP from Glen Falls, NY band The Quick and The Dead.  It will be released on July 26.  The Quick and The Dead features our old friend Joey Mansman (Today is his birthday by the way  – so have a good one Joey) who we met through his other band Cosmonauts (who are supposed to be wrapping up their epic final album soon – from what I read). You may remember our interview and video premier of the Cosmonauts song Cold Harbor.  The Quick and The Dead offers up a more roots/Americana vibe, and based on what I’ve heard so far, it is pretty awesome.  I can’t wait to hear the whole EP.  The first taste from Easy Getting By is called “Into the River”

Finally, we are very happy to present the first taste of Kalpa which is the new EP by Valued Customer.  The band is excited about this new music, and finally, we get our first hint at what all the excitement is about. We have to wait until July 17 for the full course of Kalpa, but the band have graced us with “Second Moon” as a Free Download over at Bandcamp (Name Your Own Price). The track is six minutes and 13 seconds of mind-blowing music and words. Valued Customer, as I have mentioned, are from Toronto. They are often weird, sometimes silly, but above all they are amazingly talented artists, and I mean that sincerely.  Here’s a sample of lyric:

but i seen it all before, Koyaanisqatsi 
I mean, hell, just the fact that they rhymed heartbeat and Koyaanisqatsi would be enough to sell me, but this isn’t even the best moment. Ah, heck just judge for yourself..

Tomorrow is the official release date of the second album by The Blind Owl Band from New York State.  Having heard the record, I can tell you it’s damn good.
