“All I Need” (Radio Edit) by The Boy From the Crowd

Another track from the Where the Bees Come to Die. This is actually the “radio edit” of a song from that EP. Heavy Blues based alternative rock. I’m digging this music a bunch!

“MacGillcuddy’s Reeks” by Warren Zevon

Another track from My Ride’s Here – Zevon’s 2002 album. This one is set against a traditional sounding Irish reel.

“All At Once You Unzipped” by Bill Lloyd

Feeling the Elephant established Bill Lloyd as the king of Nashville power pop – a crown his has held onto and reclaimed over the decades that have followed. Infectious melodies and wicked guitar work… check the video playlist for a recent performance of Bill Lloyd proving he still wears that crown.

“American Dreaming” by Killing Kuddles

A long time favorite of Ear to the Ground. This is a track from the EP Sinking Ship which was released back in June. Punk-spirited folk/pop music from the 21st Century.

“Surf Explosion” (Video Edit) by Martin Cilia

This is another track from the awesome Instrumental Rock sampler I got via Continental Magazine. Martin Cilia is an Australian guitar player – best known as a long time member of the classic surf rock band, The Atlantics. He more recently joined the long running Australian new wave band, Mental as Anything.

Another track from the recent Wilco album,Star Wars.

“Would You Love Me” by Stone Cupid

Another track from the forthcoming and fantastic album by Stone Cupid – The Cardinal. Stone Cupid is the powerhouse Nashville band that backs up Julie Christensen – a punk rock survivor – perhaps best know for her long association with Leonard Cohen – which includes appearing in the 2005 tribute show for Leonard Cohen which resulted in the film, I’m Your Man. She performed “Anthem” alongside Perla Batalla at that show, and a new version of that song appears as a Bonus Track on The Cardinal. Christensen has been living in Nashville for a few years, and she has put together a top notch band.

“Summer Wine” by Lana Del Rey

We close out the first post of November with a nostalgic look back… kind of… It’s Lana Del Rey with Barrie-James O’Neill of Kassidy with a cover of a song written by Lee Hazlewood and most famous covered by Nancy Sinatra who sang the song with Hazlewood in 1967.

Welcome to the week… it looks like this is going to be a short week for me, so expect some inconsistent Morning Shuffles… check back periodically and I know I will be back as soon as possible.

First, I had a great time at The Tomato Art Fest in East Nashville on Saturday. Saw some great music and got to hang out with a bunch of great friends. Sorry to everyone I missed.

In the shuffle we have some cool tunes… so let us not delay…

“Strike You Down” by Indigenous Engines

We start out this week with a song from one of my favorite Nashville songwriters, Andrew Adkins with a track off of Witches – one of two EPs out from his new project called Indigenous Engines. I dig it.

“Susan Scorned” by Bill Lloyd

Bill Lloyd’s first solo album (I think) Feeling the Elephant remains one of my favorite albums of all time. I had it on vinyl and then picked up the CD when it was reissued early in the 90s. It is an amazing slice of pure pop heaven. Susan Scorned as always been among my favorite tracks on the album – though to be honest, I can’t think of track from the album that is not a favorite. “When it rains, it comes in torrents…”

“Broken Face” by Pixies

Just because every Monday needs some Pixies. Off of the classic Surfer Rosa album.

“Odyssey” by Rival Consoles

Rival Consoles is from London and plays Electronic music. This track is the title number from an EP. The song came to me via a Noisetrade Sampler from the Big Ears Music Festival which was held in Knoxville, Tennessee back in the early spring/late winter.

“Hey Mr. Grey” by Bob Mould

From his 2014 album Beauty and Ruin… Bob Mould shows that it is possible to keep rocking harder and harder no matter how many years go by. My Mount Rushmore of American Rock gods would have Mr. Mould right in the middle…. who else?

“Ordinary Weekend” by John Wesley Harding

From Why the Fight? The artist formerly known as John Wesley Harding with one of my favorite songs of his. “Sink or Swim”.

“One Tear at a Time” by The Sky Kings

Having two appearances by Bill Lloyd in the shuffle is never a bad thing. This one is from the Supergroup that he was a part of. This album was made in (and eventually named) 1992 but just saw the light of day at the end of 2014. It was not only worth the wait, but like all great music, it was timeless and wonderful.

“Please, Be Kind” by The Colored Parade

Completing our completely random frame of today’s shuffle, we close out the shuffle where we began with an track from an Andrew Adkin’s album. This one is from his band, The Colored Parade – the album is called, And the Walls of the City Will Shake. A pretty cool way to end the first and (maybe) the last shuffle of the week.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – The New L.A. Mix

I have a three day weekend coming up, and so I am ready to blow this week out of the water. We have an awesome shuffle today. A summation of Nashville in the 80s and hell probably still a pretty accurate look at Nashville today. “Somewhere Hank and Lefty are rolling in their graves…”

“The Riddle Song” by Forest Mountain Hymnal

It’s nice to have Forest Mountain Hymnal back in the shuffle. This Nashville couple always offer amazing traditional folk music – sometimes pretty, sometimes spooky… This song is the first from a project of music based upon the Ballad Book of John Jacob Niles. You can read more about the project called Dear Balladeer here. The first song is one of the better known songs they will record and has been recorded many times. This is a very lovely folk song.

“Emily” by Joe Nolan

Another cool song from my friend Joe Nolan from his forthcoming remastered version of Blue Turns Black.

“The Man I Was Before” by Christian Lopez Band

West Virginia’s Christian Lopez has garnered quite a bit of attention as of late including this song from his 2014 EP Pilot which appeared on the Noisetrade compilation The Best of What’s Next 2015. I realty dig this song.

“Nothing Comes Close” by Bill Lloyd

We close things out with another great song from Bill Lloyd’s classic album Feeling the Elephant. The video I found (included in the video playlist below) makes me remember his awesome band The December Boys and makes me nostalgic for the late, great Nashville street festival Summer Lights which brought people downtown at a time when people didn’t really want to come downtown except for work. The festival also always offered an amazing lineup of local and national artists.

“I Confess” by Tom Tom Club

Nothing heats things up like good dance music, and Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth and company make some of the best. This is another from Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom (1988).

“The War on the Terror and the Drugs” by Ike Reilly with Shooter Jennings

Somebody has to fight the war on the terror and the war on the drugs. You can take all the terror and Ike and Shooter will take all the drugs. Deal?

“Boys Can Never Tell” by J Roddy Walston and the Business

J Roddy Walston and the Business are based out of Richmond, VA, but the band formed in Cleveland, TN. The song came to me via a Noisetrade sampler of artist scheduled to appear at this year’s Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The video I found is J Roddy playing this song with Shovels and Ropes. From Essential Tremors.

“All Kindsa Girls” by The Real Kids

Proto-Punk from Boston. John Felice was an early member of The Modern Lovers and left to form The Real Kids in 1972. Aggressive music based upon the roots of rock and roll music. This still sounds great 40+ years later. From the self-titled first album.

“This Will End in Tears” by Sean Watkins

Another great song from Sean Watkins’ All I Do is Lie album.

“The Old Revolution” by Leonard Cohen

Going way back to 1969 and Leonard Cohen’s second album, Songs from a Room. Sublimely wonderful song, sung by a golden throated still young singer.

“The Cardinal” by Julie Christensen Band

That sly shuffle function has done it again, Julie Christensen spent a decade or so singing back up for Leonard Cohen. Before that, as part of the Divine Horsemen, she was an active part of an L.A. scene that helped to fuse the bond between Punk and what would become Alt-Country and Americana. Now, East Nashville is proud to claim her as our own, and she is stepping out with some great new songs (look for an album upcoming). The Cardinal which is a stand out of her recent live shows comes off a demo with the incredible band she has assembled. The accompanying video can serve as a preview of what you will see you come out to The Family Wash in East Nashville on Friday night. Julie and her band go on at 9:30, and my friend Russell Thompson begins around 8:30.

“Lisa Anne” by Bill Lloyd

I don’t know how many times or ways I can say that Bill Lloyd is one of Nashville’s greatest musical assets. Besides the incredible Pop songwriting demonstrated on Feeling the Elephant (and his other albums), he leads the incredible Long Players who recreate classic albums (often joined by some of the original players). He was also part of the Country music duo Foster and Lloyd (whose first two album are being rereleased by RCA soon).

“Young Love” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

We close things out with a gorgeous song by Telepathic Teddy Bear from his album called Forgiveness.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – I’m Not Down Mix

Every other Sunday Night, an amazing cultural exchange program takes place in Nashville. The East Side Invasion at Bobby’s Idle Hour features some of East Nashville’s best songwriters holding court at the legendary Music Row watering hole. Curated and hosted by performing songwriter Lindsay Ellyn, the typical evening includes two songwriter rounds, a set from a featured artist, and a show closer by Darrin Bradbury. The night is a casual, laid-back affair that happens to include some of the best songwriters Nashville (East or West) has to offer. Plus, I’m usually home before eleven to get ready to face Monday morning. Come on out sometime. The next East Side Invasion is February 8.

In the shuffle today, we have some great songs by some of my heroes, another awesome track from a new Alt-Rock band that we have been featuring, plus something completely different… let’s dig in!

“It’ll Never Get Better Than This” by Bill Lloyd

We start off the week in shuffles with another great Pop song from Bill Lloyd’s Feeling the Elephant album. Lloyd, who may be best known as 1/2 of the hit Country duo Foster and Lloyd, also happens to be one of the best Pop songwriters in America. To paraphrase Joe Jackson, When I die and go to pure pop heaven, I have a feeling I’ll hear a Bill Lloyd song playing on the PA.

“That’s How it Goes” by Meat Puppets

One of the Meat Puppets most straight forward Country sounding songs. It’s still a definite Meat Puppets’ song. From Forbidden Places.

“Amazons” by Phranc

Another from Folksinger. Amazons is Phranc’s homage to great female sports figures.

“Human Touch” by Elvis Costello

From Get Happy!! Elvis Costello and the Attractions 1980 album which was highly influenced by Ska, Soul, and Rhythm and Blues music.

“Endless Farewell” by Soul Asylum

From Hang Time (1988) which was produced by Ed Stasium and Lenny Kaye. Endless Farewell is a slow burner in the midst of some of the most poppy punk rock songs on the album.

“Blind Among the Flowers” by The Tourists

The Tourist was a 1970s British band that featured (among others) Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart before they were Eurhythmics. The band wrote and recorded some incredibly catchy songs in the course of their 3 year existence. Appropriately enough, their 1984 retrospective was called Should Have Been Greatest Hits. Blind Among the Flowers from the band’s self-titled debut album is one of my favorites.

“Out of Control (Into the Void)” by The Torn Images

I think this is the fourth The Torn Images song we have featured in one of our shuffles. From the Reviver album, the song is the kind of grungy rock songs, that you just don’t hear very often anymore.

“Stellazine Blues” by The Georgia Satellites

From In the Land of Salvation and Sin comes some classic late 80s Southern rock and roll.

“Fracking” by Tanya Tagaq

From the album Animalism. This is music unlike anything you have heard before. Intensely primal Inuit Throat singing is joined with eerily droning electronica. I do not think this is for everyone, but I encourage everyone to listen with an open mind and recognize the artistry of what is happening even if the results are not to your taste.

“I’m Not Down” by The Clash

This is probably one of the songs on London Calling with which I am least familiar. It is a great song from one of the best albums of all time by one of the best bands of all time.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Pants on Fire Mix

Last night, I hung out at this wonderful weekly East Nashville happening, Derek Hoke’s $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot. It was a great time with some great music. Host Derek Hoke played an awesomely perfect Western Swingish version of Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy, and the night ended with a great full-band set by J.R. Wyatt who I have featured on this blog.

If you are in Nashville on Thursday, you have your next non-Fran’s chance to see Ear to the Ground 2014 Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury. The show is also at The 5 Spot beginning around 9:00. Mention Ear to the Ground and you will get some odd looks, but what the heck, mention us anyway.
“Liar Liar” by Phranc

I don’t know what a small town Tennessee boy was doing listening to an ex-punk, Jewish Lesbian Folksinger, but I did, and I loved it. As an Amazon reviewer noted, some of the cultural references are a bit dated, but the music prevails and hell, we can all think of people to whom this song applies. From Folksinger

“You Keep Me Hanging On” by Aretha Franklin

In 2014 the Queen of Soul released Sings the Great Diva Classics. This is the Holland Dozier Holland classic originally recorded by The Supremes. Aretha is still the Queen of Soul.

“Evona Darling” by Linda and Teddy Thompson

Evona Darling is a beautiful song written by Lal and Mike Waterson. Linda Thompson included this song on her 2002 album Fashionably Late. This version with her son Teddy was included on Shining Light: The Songs of Lal and Mike Waterson which was also released in 2002. This is an amazing cover by two incredible performers.

The Allman Brothers Band recently ended their long run, and a 6 disc box set of recordings from their legendary 1971 At Fillmore East shows was released in 2014. And, although, I cannot claim to be a huge or long time Allman Brothers Band fan, I can say that there are some amazing things happening here musically. And I am moved to dig deeper.

From their latest album Southsiders, Minneapolis hip-hop duo Atmosphere… I dig it.

“This Must Be the Place” by Bill Lloyd

Feeling the Elephant is one of my favorite albums of the Nashville 80s Rock era, and it remains a true Pop masterpiece.

Greetings. After an extended Holiday weekend, Ear to the Ground is back with another slam, bang mix of music. During the recess, I’ve been busy adding songs to our rotating playlist from which the Morning Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle are drawn.

Today, we have a pretty decent mixture of old and new music which covers a variety of musical styles and genres. Hope you enjoy it. The Pre-shuffle kicks off right after the JUMP

Since then, he has released a string of albums which are as close to pure pop heaven and one can hope to reach, he was 1/2 of the Country music duo Foster and Lloyd, and more recently he curates a rotating band called The Long Players who recreate classic albums. This powerful debut by the San Francisco singer/songwriter who goes by the moniker James the Giant is still about two weeks from its official release. The first single, Two Weeks on the Ocean (which we featured within the last week or so) is out and had a premier at USA Today!

Nashville’s own,Bill Lloyd has a diverse and storied history. He heads up the popular band The Long Players who recreate classic albums with a rotating all-star cast of characters which occasionally includes musicians who played on the original album. He was 1/2 of the popular Country music duo Foster and Lloyd and he has recorded and released a series of totally awesome solo records over the past 25 + years. His latest album is called Boy King of Tokyo, and we have the title track from that album in the shuffle today.

New Jersey band The Everymen are from New Jersey and they just released a stunning 52 song compilation which is available from Bandcamp with all proceeds going to Hurricane Sandy Relief.
