Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Your Own Chosen Speed Mix

Well we have a lot of ground to cover today, so let’s not tarry.. or whatever…
Music begins after the JUMP

Pre-Shuffle
1. We begin with one of the best examples of pure British Pop (with a capital ‘P’) that I’ve heard in a long time.  We’ve featured the band Human Face – who came to our attention via a Twitter Followseveral times, but it’s been a little while.  “After Lunch” is just a flat out great song. As I mentioned before, I really do put this band in the long line of great British Pop bands that includes Squeeze among others.  Check out the video (in the playlist)
2. As a poor lowly music blogger, I spend a lot of time trolling the internet for legal free music to present to you.  Noisetrade has become a favorite site of mine.  They recently teamed up with the folks at Paste to offer up a Radiohead show from June 1995.  We’ve been periodically featuring tracks from that album. Today, we have “Anyone Can Play Guitar” which was released as a single just before the release of the album Pablo Honey which includes the song.
3. The Great Mistake are Buffalo New York band that we’ve featured a couple of times. They are just in the process of releasing some new music which sounds great.  “Haphazard” goes back to their 2010 album, Wave to the Astronaut.  Below is a widget with a newer song called Your Philosophy which may be on their next album.
4. I have this strange obsession with cover songs.  I mean, yeah there are the occasional tragic mistakes, but for the most part, I think, cover songs are pretty interesting.  They can be defining like Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watch Tower”, redeeming like Aztec Camera’s deconstruction of Van Halen’s “Jump”, or they can just be spot on but still cool versions like today’s first cover – Matthew Sweet doing a cover of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic, “American Girl”. This comes from a cover album featuring covers of songs from the 80s which were featured in iconic films of that era.  The album is a few years old, but it just came into my consciousness and there are some interesting songs on here.

5. We’ve been hyping  Kalpa, the new album from Toronto-based lovable misfits, Valued Customer.  We got our first taste a couple of weeks ago with the song “Second Moon”. Now, we go deeper with the longest track on the album.  “New Jerusalem” clocks in at 14 minutes and has several movements running through it. Historically, I’m not a big fan over long songs.  “Sister Ray” and “Telegraph Road” are two notable exceptions. And, I have to add “New Jerusalem” to that list.  In some ways, this surprisingly reminds me of the The Gabriel Construct album I’ve been featuring of late.  Like that work, this is experimental, challenging, complex, and extremely, extremely good.  Patrick and Ugggy of Valued Customer are hilarious to follow on the Twitter and the Facebook. They are sometimes silly, obscure, and irreverent.  This album is revelatory. They obviously put tons of work into this album, and it has paid off.

Some lyrics from “New Jerusalem”

civilizations like chocolate donuts
if one isn’t good enough a hundred won’t be good enough”

running to new jerusalem
the towers are in the exosphere
goodbye you whores of babylon
trumpets are playing burning spear”

“(hide your daughter hide your wife
lock up all your beets and chives
they’ll kill you for your salt and spice
the end of twitter and being nice)”

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=50545387/size=medium/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/transparent=true/

6.  In the weeks since we first introduced you to James the Giant, he has gone on to have his first single introduced by USA Today and the video for that song featured on Huffington Post.   As much as I want to say that being featured on Ear to the Ground lead to these impressive credentials, the fact is this accolades are well-deserved.  The single “Two Weeks on the Ocean” is one of the emotionally powerful songs I’ve heard in a while. Today, we feature “Leave it Buried”.  The eponymously titled EP had it’s official released yesterday.

Shuffle

1. Night, which is the newish album from Beijing (the band not the city). The band comes from Connecticut.  Today’s track is “Into the Rain”. The album is a great achievement. On it, the band walks a precarious balance which could have easily sent them plummeting into one of several miasmas. The band and this album successfully navigates these treacherous paths.

2.  In 1986, I started hearing this awesome song on the college radio station. It was rollicking and dark and hinted at something just outside of my vision. I eventually bought the album which quickly came and has remained a favorite of mine.  The artist and album are called Peter Case. The song is “Walk in the Woods“.

3.  Another cover.  A year after Bob Dylan released his fourth album (1964). Johnny Cash (who admired and was admired by Dylan) recorded a cover version of “It Ain’t Me Babe” with June Carter for his 1965 album Orange Blossom Special which was Cash’s 21st album.

“well i guess this is growing up” – The latest single from The Great American Novel. A taste of the highly anticipated follow-up to Kissing. Check it out!

“Watch the Rope” by The Black Market Merchants from Black Market EP (2013)

The not-so casual observer will note that this EP and the previous song in our mix were both recorded at the same place.  Currently, I have no further information to add, just the observation.  This three song EP is available on Bandcamp. It’s worthy of your attention and action.  As always add some digits to the name your price box if you are able. In any event share, share, share…

“Vegetable” (live) by Radiohead from PASTE.COM Presents: Radiohead Live at Tramps June 1, 1995 (2013)

(No longer available on Noisetrade.com)
Live version of this song from the first Radiohead album, Pablo Honey.

Tuesday by JWM 7/7/2013

I don’t have much to say, so let’s hit the music – shall we?  After the JUMP

PRE-SHUFFLE

“You’re Probably Good at Kissing” by The Great American Novel (You probably are…)

“Meeting” by Canopy Climbers (Uplifting and majestic)

“Marvin’s Room” (Drake Cover) by Valued Customer (Okay, so top secret sources have leaked the name and release date of the new album by Valued Customer. Kalpa is due out July 17. You have just over a week to prepare yourself of epicness, face-meltiness, and perhaps world domination. Just remember, you heard about them here first.  Meanwhile, we have a pretty awesome instrumental cover of this song by Drake.  Drake, I am told, was once on the hit Canadian teenage soap opera Degrassi (something, something). You remember, it was Wheels, Joey, Snake and his twin brother Drake. Okay, maybe not, but he was on Degrassi and that was from Canada just like Valued Customer and Molson’s and SCTV and William Shatner – so there.  Remember Kalpa July 17!)

“Fire Fire Fire Fire” by Casey Black (When one “Fire” is not enough. Casey Black is from Nashville and makes pretty awesome music.)

“The World’s Last Night” by Heath McNease (more from the Weight of Glory hip-hop remix)

“Grown-ups” by The Burning Hell (The Burning Hell are from St. Johns, Newfoundland. To my knowledge this song has no connection to the hit movie franchise of the same name. It’s a nifty song. The Burning Hell is Mathias Kom joined by a number of other people)

“You” live by Radiohead (A live version of the first track on the first Radiohead album)

SHUFFLE

“El Blues Es Mi Amigo” by Guadalupe Plata from Guadalupe Plata (2013)

Some Deep Blues from Spain.  Guadalupe Plata performed at the Deep Blues Festival in Minnesota back in June. Our good friends, The Dead Exs were there, too. The Dead Exs reported back and we paid attention.  That’s what Ear to the Ground is all about.  Check it.

“The Problem of Pain” by Heath McNease from The Weight of Glory: Second Edition (2013)

This is really powerful stuff. I’ve said all I can about this  record. Seriously, check it out.

“All the Times We Had” by Ivan and Alyosha from All the Times We Had (2013)

The title track from the full-length debut from this promising Seattle band.

“Missing My Home” by The Blind Owl Band from This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel (2013)

Tomorrow is the official release date of the second album by The Blind Owl Band from New York State.  Having heard the record, I can tell you it’s damn good.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Ugly Moon Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Greetings.  After an extended Holiday weekend, Ear to the Ground is back with another slam, bang mix of music. During the recess, I’ve been busy adding songs to our rotating playlist from which the Morning Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle are drawn.
Today, we have a pretty decent mixture of old and new music which covers a variety of musical styles and genres.  Hope you enjoy it.  The Pre-shuffle kicks off right after the JUMP

Pre-Shuffle

“I’m Wide Awake” by Jeffrey James (Nashville based soulful singer – was on Season 3 of The Voice)

“Vulture in My Sky” by The Jake Levinson Band (from Austin – music video directed by our good friend Raindogg!)

“Lonesome Street” by The Blind Owl Band (Our second peak into the forthcoming album from this awesome New York band. The Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel is due out in two days. If you live anywhere in NY and NJ, be sure to catch The Blind Owl Band on their album release tour.  Saturday’s show in Saratoga Springs features our friends The Lucky Jukebox Brigade!)

“Raymond Carver” by The Great American Novel (We continue to mentally prepare ourselves for the highly anticipated new album by this New York band)

“My Iron Lung” (live) by Radiohead (more 1995 goodness via Paste Magazine and Noisetrade)

“Turn Me On Dead Man” by Bill Lloyd (Lloyd has been a fixture on the Nashville music scene for a long, long time.  I first became familiar with him when he was rocking out with his band The December Boys.  Since then, he has released a string of albums which are as close to pure pop heaven and one can hope to reach, he was 1/2 of the Country music duo Foster and Lloyd, and more recently he curates a rotating band called The Long Players who recreate classic albums.  His Facebook posts provide an excellent history of great music. This song is from his 1999 album Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.  His latest album is Boy King of Tokyo)

Shuffle

“Silence” by Beijing from Night (2013)

Our new friend’s from Connecticut Beijing jump back into the Shuffle with another track from their rocking new album Night.

“American Music” by Violent Femmes from Why Do Birds Sing? (1991)

From the Fifth Studio album. American Music may be the band’s second best known song.  Violent Femmes have reunited in 2013 and played Coachella and Milwaukee’s Summerfest.

“Long Days of Longing” by James the Giant from James the Giant (2013)

This powerful debut by the San Francisco singer/songwriter who goes by the moniker James the Giant is still about two weeks from its official release.  The first single, Two Weeks on the Ocean (which we featured within the last week or so) is out and had a premier at USA Today!

“Creep” (live) by Radiohead from PASTE.COM Presents: Radiohead Live at Tramps June 1, 1995 (2013)

“Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special”

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Treat Me Like a Bum, Don’t Wear No Tie Mix

“Doctor Visit” photo collage by JWM 6/27/13

Tomorrow is the Fourth of July here in the USA.  For the rest of you, well it’s the Fourth of July, too unless you are across the International Date Line in which case tomorrow is the Fifth of July.  In any event have a great Fourth (or Fifth) of July.

Today’s music next

PRE-SHUFFLE:

“Wonder No More” by Bronze Radio Return (Indie Roots Rock from Connecticut)

“Ranting Prophet” by The Gabriel Construct (We continue our song by song extended review of the phenomenal Interior City album. The progressive/jazz/classical riffs with Gabriel’s incredible vocal embellishments make this an irresistibly complex and powerful collection of music.)

“Cherry Tree” by The Blind Owl Band (These CXCW alums from New York state are getting ready to release their brand new 12-song release. ‘The Train We Ride is Made of Wood and Steel’ is due out July 10. Today we feature a song from that album – the first of many.  The makes modern music using traditional instruments, and they are a whole lot of fun.  If you’re a fan of Imperial Rooster and/or Black Jake and the Carnies, you will probably like this band.  If you dig traditional bluegrass and old timey Country music, you will probably like this band.  If you dig good music, well played, you will probably like this band.  You will probably like this band.  h/t to Popa Tunes – as per usual)

“Project” by Canopy Climbers  (we continue to feature songs from this Arkansas/Tennessee band who recently released their latest album Miles.  Great sounding Indie/Pop)

“Waitress in the Sky” by The Replacements (hum this song the next time you get bad service on a flight.)

“The Fold” by Ivan and Alyosha (More good stuff from this Washington State band)

“Holly” by The Great American Novel (we continue to get hyped for the new album from this incredibly awesome New York band)

SHUFFLE:

“Planet Telex” (live) by Radiohead from PASTE.COM Presents: Radiohead Live at Tramps June 1, 1995 (2013)

Another track from this recently released set brought to you by Paste.com and Noisetrade.com. It’s Free but 100% of “Tips” go to Amnesty International

“A Grief Observed” by Heath McNease from The Weight of Glory: Second Edition (A Hip Hop Remix Inspired by the Works of CS Lewis) (2013)

Some powerful lyrics and some wicked beats. It’s also available via Noisetrade.com

“Cretin Hop” by Ramones from Rocket to Russia (1977)

It’s been a blast having a Ramones’ song or two in the shuffle almost every day.

“Layne Montgomery is Bad at Girls” by The Great American Novel from Kissing (2012)

A first. I’ve been posting Morning Shuffles since before Ear to the Ground came into existence. It began as Facebook status updates when I listened to a particularly cool mix of music. Some where along the way, it became a daily thing and eventually transferred to the blog when I started writing it.  During that time, I have had numerous occasions to feature songs by people on my Facebook Friends List (including irl friends, musical heroes kind enough to accept my friend request, and new friends I’ve made via the blog). However, today (to my knowledge), we feature the first song whose title includes the name of one of my Facebook friends.  Bonus: Layne Montgomery’s mother was a top ten finalist in Nick @ Nite’s Funniest Mom in America Contest. As for the song, it’s either deeply revealing or self-deprecating or both. Whatever, it’s typically killer stuff from this amazing band.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Brain is Hanging Upside Down Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Another month here at Ear to the Ground, and suddenly, we find 2013 is half over… oh, how can it be?

Oh, it be….

We start 2013 Act II with yet another scintillating mix of music.  Sometimes, especially when time prevents me from adding very much in the way of commentary, exactly what my role is.  But, in an attempt to up my pretentiousness factor, I have decided to call what I do Curating.  So, for you listening pleasure, here is the latest E2TG mix curated by yours truly…

PRE-SHUFFLE: (Not in order)

We feature two songs from the new album by the awesome band, Beijing.  The album Night is rapidly turning into one of our favorites of a year jam-packed with great music. Today, we heard: “Violent” and “The Sun Will Set.”  This band (from Connecticut not China) packs a powerful and melodious punch.

The pre-shuffle also includes two songs from Arkansas/Tennessee band Canopy Climbers. “Garden” is a bonus track from their recent Noisetrade sampler, and Always” is the opening track on their brand new album Miles.

Let’s continue the twofers with a pair of songs from New York punk legends, The Ramones.  “We’re a Happy Family” is from their third studio album, Rocket to Russia (1977); and “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg” sometimes subtitled “My Brain is Hanging Upside Down” was released first as a single in 1985 and then subsequently included on the band’s ninth studio album, Animal Boy (1986).

Next up, we have the late, great Bobby Bland with “Second Hand Heart”. Bland, who died on June 23 at the age of 83, left behind a legacy of great music. This song is on his 1986 album, After All.

“Mourning Train from Memphis” by Christopher Paul Stelling from Songs of Praise and Scorn (2012)  A favorite of mine. Beautiful, and as I’ve said over and over again, I am a sucker for a train song.

“Beach Day” by Beach Day – just discovered this great band from Hollywood, Florida.  Great mix of surf rock, girl group and punk.  From their brand new TripTrap Attack album.

And finally, we just grabbed a live recording of Radiohead from June 1995 which just released on Noisetrade (in conjunction with Paste magazine). Coincidentally, I actually saw Radiohead live a couple of months after the show recorded here (opening for R.E.M. in Nashville), and between the time this recording was made and the show I saw, my amazing daughters were born.  We have “The Bends” – the title track from what was then the latest Radiohead album (released March 1995).

We have an amazing shuffle after the jump…

“Ash’s Lament (Pokemon Theme)” by Valued Customer off of their cover album, Fun Covers which was released in 2012

  • As we begin to turn blue (from holding our breath) and eagerly await to find out what Valued Customer have in store for us next, we have added this awesome collection of cover songs to our Playlist to help us in our inpatient wait.
  •

“Umbrella” by Canopy Climbers from Miles (2013)
  • Our third song of the day from Canopy Climbers is a good one. Umbrella is a nifty song that pulls in tightrope walker imagery into a song which seems to be about risk and trust and faith.

“Inner Sanctum” by The Gabriel Construct from Interior City (2013)

      • We close out our first music mix of July with another stunner from the challenging but chaotically beautiful album by The Gabriel Construct. Finally got the change to listen to this album straight through, and it is a remarkable journey. Certainly, it is an ambitious effort.  I’m all about bold ambitious efforts, and for me this one is a success because of the way the varied genres, cacophonous music and evocative lyrics are brought together to tell a very powerful story.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – The Icestorm Cometh (or Not) Mix

Here we go… I’ll plug the Sandy Hook single again.  Really, check this out and buy it.  $1.29 – just don’t super-size your fast food meal for one day. 😉

Our shuffle is all over this this a.m. – check it out – after the… wait for it… jump:

      1.  Song: Ugly  Artist: Garrison Starr Album: Eighteen Over Me (1997) – We listened to a live version off a Noisetrade release – Awesome singer-songwriter originally from Mississippi)

      2.  Song: Birmingham  Artist: Mikey Wax  Album: The Traveler EP (2010) – (Long Island based singer-songwriter – attended college in Nashville, one our early “Bands” of the Week, one of his songs – Counting on You – was an elimination song on Season 9 of So You Think You can Dance, spread his music through a series of house concerts during the summer of 2010 and 2011)

      3. Song: PT Cruiser Artist: O Children  Album: Apnea (2012) – (London based Alternative band – my first time hearing this actually – I like it – what do you think?)

      4.  Song: Alright  Artist: Adam Carroll Album: Far Away Blues (2005) – (Texas singer-songwriter – Adam Carroll is up there with some of the great country/folk/whateveryouwanttocallit singer-songwriters.  It does not seem like hyperbole to through around names like Townes and Prine and Dylan)
Couldn’t find a video for Alright – here’s Screen Door

      5.  Song: Nobody Does it Better (Carly Simon cover)  Artist: Radiohead Album: Covers by Radiohead (???) – (aka The Spy Who Loved Me – Simon’s version is on the Amazon widget above – pretty straight ahead cover by Radiohead – Thom Yorke is not Carly Simon, but this is a pretty sweet cover nonetheless)

      6.  Song: From the News  Artist: The Joy of Painting  Album: Asterisk (2012) – (Another past Band of the Week, TJOP promise new music for 2013)

      7.  Song: Kick It In (Studio Demo) Artist: The Replacements Album: Pleased to Meet Me (Expanded Edition) (2008 reissue, 1987 original album) – (oh the joys of the expanded reissues, The ‘mats Kick It In – in fine form)
A different Replacements song with Kick in the title – live from ’81

      8. Song: It Happened Today  Artist: R.E.M. Album: Collapse Into Now (2011) – (from what ended up being the Athens-based swan-song)

      9.  Song: Big Blue Train  Artist: Whiteboy James and the Blues Express Album: Extreme Makeover (2011) – (California Blues – my first time hearing this – first thought was hell yeah, then The Blasters came to mind. Turns out James played some with Dave and Phil Alvin at some point.  I’m a fan now)

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – White Tornado Mix

      !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

So, here we go… after several months of waiting, I finally have a 32GB card in my phone and to celebrate I added a random 20GB (left room to grow) sampling of my entire digital library and then I randomly shuffled that 20GB and the resulting Morning Music Shuffle is after the jump:

      1.  TV in the Bedroom by TV Girl from The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle (Modern Indie Pop for your listening pleasure)* (A different TV Girl song in on the Amazon Clip Widget)

      2.  Listen to the Rain by Neopolitan from Nashville Homegrown (a Capella from a mid 80s Nashville-based benefit compilation) *Not on widget, No Video – to my knowledge this song is not available digitally.  I recorded from vinyl.

      3. Camera by The Oregon Donor from Burning Building Fall 2010 Sampler from Amazon (Portland Post-Rock, Indie band – based upon their Facebook page it appears the band is on indefinite hiatus – correct me if I’m wrong about that).

      4.  I Love My Label by Nick Lowe from Best of Yep Rock Singles (from the 2008 Yep Rock reissue of Lowe’s debut album Jesus of Cool).
Wilco + Nick Lowe from the stage of the Ryman in Nashville

      5.  Wilderland by Anais Mitchell from Young Man in America (One of the best albums of 2012)

      6.  Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division Cover) by Radiohead (Actually Atoms for Peace) from Covers by Radiohead (One of the best songs ever! Dead on cover) *Amazon Widget has the Joy Division original.

      7.  Grown Ocean by Fleet Foxes from Helplessness Blues (a great song for the cold walk up the stairs of the capitol)

      8.  Chrono by Kraftwerk from Tour de France Soundtracks (groovy electronic music from the pioneering band of the genre)
      9.  The Revolution Will Not Be Televised by Gil Scott-Heron from Ghetto Style (Because it won’t!)
      10.  Sounds Super Recordings by Cornershop from Handcream for a Generation (I love me some Cornershop)
