So, what can I say, it’s late January, and the high today is supposed to peak above 70 – followed, of course, by a night of storms and then cooler weather. Still and all, it’s still mid-winter, and I’m still kind of suffering through some S.A.D.-like symptoms, but as always, we press on…

Today’s music shuffle is on tap – after the JUMP

1. Song: Baby Lee Artist: Teenage Fanclub Album: Shadows (2010)
Scottish alt-rock band.  Their 1991 album Bandwagonesque beat out Nevermind by Nirvana for album of the year in Spin Magazine.  Baby Lee is off 2010 Shadows which, to-date, is the latest album for Teenage Fanclub.

2. Perihelion 1 Artist: Andrew Osenga Album: Leonard, The Lonely Astronaut (2012)
A perihelion refers to an orbit around the Sun.  Perihelion 1 is a brief instrumental on Osenga’s 2012 concept album, Leonard, the Lonely Astronaut.
a different song from the same album

3. Song: Long Long Long Artist: Rhett Miller  Album: The Dreamer (2012)

In our shuffle a live version recorded at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia… The Old 97s front man is in good spirits and sounds incredible in this Noisetrade version.

4.  Song: Seven Seas of Rhye  Artist: Queen Album:Queen II (1974)

The final song on Queen’s second album. An earlier version was the final song on their debut.  This is early-period Queen at their absolute best.

5. Song: Cages  Artist: David Lowery  Album: non-album download from The Palace Guards sessions (2011)

A fun and silly song from the Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker front man. Supposedly co-written by a guy from my hometown. By the way, the Amazon widget above includes a different song from Palace Guards.
 (fan-made video)
6. Song: Water in Hell Artist: Broken Social Scene Album: Forgiveness Rock Record (2010)
A nifty song from the Canadian Indie Rock collective from what is at present their latest album.

7.  Song: Impossible Sky  Artist: Woods  Album: Bend Beyond (2012)

I dig this song from this Brooklyn-based folksy band.

8. Song: Living Like a Hobo  Artist: Marvin Etzioni and Buddy Miller Album: Marvin Country! (2012)

A rousing number from Etzioni’s star-studded Double album. This one features Nashville-based living legend Buddy Miller.

here is a Marvin County! related video of another song
9.  Song: Ready Teddy  Artist: Little Richard  Album: Here’s Little Richard (1957)
A classic Rock n’ Roll song written by Robert Blackwell and John Marascalco.

10.  Song: Gillian  Artist: Ane Brun  Album: Changing of the Seasons (2008)
Great song from the Norwegian born singer-songwriter. Evocative and beautiful.

11. Song: One Small Step  Artist: Black Tar Pineapple  Album: Black Tar Pineapple (2012)
Nifty song from this side project of one our featured bands from last year – The Danbury Lie. Check it out (not on the Amazon widget, but the album is available on Spotify and (as linked below) Bandcamp.

Something new.  We want you to get to know our Featured Artists of the Month a little better, and so we have some interesting, often irrelevant, and possibly untrue factoids about the 10 Featured Bands:

Lawrence Welks and Our Bear to Cross list as their influence, “The Music of Phil Collins” (source: Facebook Page)

Big Wilson River cite influences as diverse as Pavement and John Prine. (Source: Facebook Page)

The Raindoggs described: “Picture Tom Waits and Snoop Dogg in a 68 Camaro driving from New Orleans to LA, and it’s all being filmed by David Lynch. This is the voo doo smoke that seeps from The RainDoggs’ jaws and paws.” (Source: Facebook Page)

First Ever Band of the Month Readers Poll

Can we have a sidebar please?  After the success of last month Band of the Year poll, and the thought of trying to manage a poll for 52 Bands of the Week for this year, I have decided to have a Band of the Month for each month December 2011 to November 2012.  Each Band of the Month will added to the Band of the Year poll the first week of December 2012.

Last week, I was lazy busy okay lazy and did not name a Band of the Week.  It was definitely not for lack of deserving bands.  Look for Band of the Week to resume later this week.

In the meantime, if you will kindly direct your gaze to the left side of the screen (if you’re reading this in a feed reader, you will have to visit the site), I have posted a handy dandy little poll which is waiting on your participation.  It’s going to be open about a week.

To assist you, here is a recap:

Week 1:  The Dead Exs – The Dead Exs are an exciting blues based rock band from the New York/New Jersey area.  Their sound reminds me of early Jason & the Scorchers and Georgia Satellites if those bands were influenced by Muddy Waters more than Hank Williams. Here is a link to their website.

Week 2: In Cages – also come from the New York/New Jersey area.  They are a brand new band with a hard, alternative sound and the unique sound of the cello.  Visit, In Cages here.

Week 3: Jesse Payne – bringing it back to the new South… Jesse Payne hails from Birmingham. He has a beautiful minimalistic sound, but he also knows how to rave it up when that is needed.  Hit him up here.

Week 4: Spencer Walters – Midwest singer/songwriter makes simple beautiful music that comes from his heart. They are good songs, too.  So, head over here to check him out.

Now head over to the sidebar and vote!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – A New Ideal Mix

2012 is here and we’re ready for a year of great new music and meeting new people. I know things have been a bit slow the past couple of weeks, but we have much in store for the new year.

We begin with our first batch of fresh songs for the new year.

1.  In the City is a cover of the 1977 song by English band The Jam.  Here the song is performed by 80s era Nashville rock band Practical Stylists.  Here it is on Soundcloud.

2. 1991 (Mastermind Mix)  is a recent free download from past Band of the Week and Shoegaze favorites, the Fauns.  If you missed the download, you can purchase and download their self-titled album by clicking on the album cover below.

 3. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues is yet another awesome Dylan cover from the I’m Not There soundtrack.  This one is done by Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.  Purchase and download the track at Amazon by clicking on the album cover below.

Charlie Parker

This is a poem I wrote which is part of a here-to-fore unpublished novel called Shadows and Revelations.  Jerry Gilchrist is a character in my novel.

A poem by Jerry Gilchrist – circa 1991
my room
my place
Charlie Parker on my cd player
and a frozen glass – filled
with rum from the freezer
leaving a ring
on my bedside table

staring up
buzzing
spinning
almost drunk
but it’s not enough
weight pulls
the weight of too much time
wasted
of loss
of fear
and the crushing weight
of having to live my life
in my skin
concert posters – taped
on the wall
my desk in the corner –
my poetry littering the top
outside my window a night
of promises – unfulfilled
Charlie Parker wonks for me
and I thank him silently
for the notes
sometimes I feel
like such a fake
living my life
as though I were not this
miserable soul
who lies on his bed
drinking rum
shirt off
listening to
dead jazz men
and trying to figure out
where it all went wrong
it began with Ethan
but that is not
the whole story
after Ethan
the pier
and college
and the city
and Shadow Man
and highways
and beaches
and Gana
and Kevin
and Joey
but all of that seems
a fiction to me now

Kevin lives nearby and
I see him fairly often but
things aren’t the same
Gana is still mad
about our last
encounter
and Joey
is off being
gay

I wish I were
gay!
I think suddenly
and remembering
my love for Ethan
wonder if perhaps
I am
but then I decide
I would be
as miserable
gay as I am
straight
my room spins
faster
more insanely
and I don’t dare
stand up
the rum is almost
gone
and the cd is nearing
the last track
a tickle on my cheeks are the
tears
and now sobs
wrack my body
my phone mocks me
with silence – I take the
receiver off the hook
and drop it on the floor
the dial tone turns into
a fast signal of alert
I ignore it
I feel myself going into blackness
I wish it were death
perhaps it is
my stomach lurches
to let me know
I am still alive
I imagine dying
choking on my own
puke
what a punk rock
thing to do
Kevin would be proud
morbid thoughts
and I know it’s not
what I want
my life to be
morbid thoughts
and I know tomorrow I will
wake up
put on a happy face
and go out into
the world
I close my eyes – big mistake –
the sense is I am
on one of those playground
merry-go-rounds
and I now I think I
might puke
take the last sip
of my rum
now warm
room temperature and
watered down by the
condensation from the glass
“Ethan!”
I cry
but the ghost
who once haunted me
is silent these days
as if ashamed to see
what I have become
loss
lost
out
black

It’s the End of the World as we know it…

All this talk about the end of world (coming Saturday), got my (decidedly) non-linear mind thinking about this book which I bought sometime in the late 80s or early 90s.
Lester Bangs is in the litany of alt-pop culture names dropped in R.E.M.’s iconic song referenced in the title of this post.
Lester Bangs was a rock critic who died way too soon. He raised the craft of writing criticism about popular (and not-so-popular) music to a high art form.   You can google Lester Bangs to find out more about him.
The articles collected in this book are funny, trenchant, irreverent, off-color, sublime and off-kilter. It is a great read just as pure literature, a (slightly) twisted look at late 60s & 70s music, and a must have if you need a book with “dung” in the title to complete your library.
Next up?   Leonard Bernstein or Lenny Bruce?
