Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Flinty Mix

Back to a normal-sized shuffle…. we have some cool tunes – let’s go!

Ms. Williams part II.  Doing a heart-shattering version of the Irving Berlin classic.

From their reunion album – Raul Malo and company sounding better than ever.

“Punk Rockin’ Honky Tonk Girl” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/If I Could

Two things to share about this song – 1.  At the end of this song on Opening Up, Tim Carroll gives a brief account of his musical journey and mentions one of my favorite bands, Rank and File.  2.  Every time I hear this song, a particular memory of mine comes back to me.  This was sometime in the 80s, at a benefit show for a local club called Elliston Square (now The End).  There was an awesome lineup of some of the cool indie bands of the day, and opening the show was Marty Stuart joined by at least one of the Dillards.  As a young punk beginning to hear Country music influence in my favorite music and still trying to reconcile that to my still strong belief that Country music was for old folks – this was culture shock, and it was also pretty darn awesome. The deal was sealed for me when I saw this tall, beautiful girl in country meets punk attire dosey-doeing  to Marty Stuart.

“Kiss and Tell” by Lael Summer from Burden to Bear

Another sultry number from Ms. Lael Summer and another video from a True Groove All-Stars show in New York.  If you’re in New York, check out The True Groove All-Stars as they continue their residency at Milk River this Thursday.

“Drifter’s Compass” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray from Lean Into The Wind

And this my friends, is why I love Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray so much.  This and the fact that they are such wonderful people.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – No Crabs Mix

Some days you just push through….  and cool tunes help!

“I Think Hank Woulda Done it This Way” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/If I Could

I had the opportunity to see and meet Tim Carroll at his weekly residence with Darrin Bradbury at Fran’s Eastside in East Nashville.  It was amazing to see him just play song after song for almost two hours????  It  was like he could have just kept going.  This track comes from a live album he put out a couple of years ago, and somewhere Hank Williams is grooving on this song.

This ones been in the hopper for a while waiting for the shuffle monster to unleash it.  From the Section 4 compilation from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen – the very awesome No Shoes with Party Poetry.

Jumping ahead to the most recent Mama Coco’s Comp – we have the band called Ishmael with a nifty song called Friar Fight.

“Van Rock” by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepes

Did you notice that Darrin Bradbury was conspicuously absent from yesterday’s shuffle.  He is on a bit of a vacation, so the shuffle gods thought they’d give him a break.  Break’s over.  When I searched for Van Rock on You Tube, I got a bunch of videos of Dave Van Ronk which is pretty cool.

An instrumental track from the new project by Liquid Casing’s aCr.  Some cool prog, alt-metal (or whatever) – it’s cool.

“Muddy Boots” by The Yugos from The Yugos

Covington, Kentucky Indie Band The Yugos reenter the shuffle at number 6. 

“Will I See You Again” by Christian Lopez from Will I See You Again

I recently grabbed this Christian Lopez release off of Noisetrade.  He is from West Virginia and seems to have carved a pretty nice space for himself in the crowded Americana landscape.  Worth checking out.

“Ain’t Nobody” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil

Any band that mixes authentic North Hill Country Blues with some Big City gusto – is okay in my book.  Love is the Devil is one of the best albums of 2014, and it is definitely worthy of your attention.

“Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

I dare you to listen to this song and not be happier at least for the time it is playing. I dare you!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Toddler Superman Mix

Monday – and as usual I’m short on time so let’s jump into the shuffle:

“Toddler Hiway” by They Might Be Giants (with The Avatars of They) from First Album Live

Another from the Live album version of TMBG debut album.  This one features the sock puppets known as The Avatars of They with the shortest song on the album.

“My Friend Superman” by Deena from Rock River

Another great track from the Rock River album.  I tend to dig songs that mention superman, and this is no exception.

“In Remembrance” by The Grey A from My Country

My Country by The Grey A will be released in less than a month.  Nashville readers, there will a CD release show on September 12 at The Stone Fox.  The show should include appearances by many of the Nashville artists who appeared on the record.

“Riverside Blues” by Year of October from WDVX Blue Plate Special 4/12/2014

Pre-Orders for Golden Days, the new Year of October release have begun.  This is the second track on the album. 

“If I Gotta’ Die (murdered by someone I love)” by Darrin Bradbury from Death in My Left Ear

Death in My Left Ear is no longer the most recent release by Darrin Bradbury, but it’s a good one, and this is one of my favorite songs of his.  In the video playlist, we have a track from his latest release Motel Oatmeal.
