It’s been a weird week filled with annoyingly insignificant snow “events”, a day off, a significant life event, just one (so far) live music night, and some pretty cool shuffles…

“Benedikt’s Blues” by Steve Wynn

Whether as a member of the Dream Syndicate, as 1/2 of Danny and Dusty, as part of The Baseball Project, or just as Steve Wynn – Steve Wynn’s music has been a significant part of my music universe for a very long time. This song is the title track from a recent release which is a “Sonic Companion to Season 4 of Dag”. “Dag” being a Norwegian television series. This track features Wynn’s wife Linda Pitmon and Scott McCaughey (both of The Baseball Project).

“Radar” by Brian Wright

From the Café Rooster Sessions Vol 1 – the most recent release by Brian Wright. I am looking forward to seeing Wright open for Dan Baird and Homemade Sin on Sunday at The Basement East.

“Parents” by SuperCrashingStar

A whimsical tune and our second listen to this New York band. I am really digging their music.

“Cross Paths” by Brian Keenan

Our second Brian in the shuffle, this one is a singer, songwriter from Brooklyn. His latest album is called Fits and Starts. A really good tune.

“She’s the One” by Bruce Springsteen

The studio version from Born to Run. Fun fact, I sometimes peek ahead to see what the next song (after the last) in a shuffle would have been and to see how it might have changed the overall tone of the shuffle. Today, had the shuffle continued past the Killing Kuddles song below, the next song would have been a live version of this song from the Chicago show.

“Be My Enemy” by The Waterboys

Another track from the classic This is the Sea album. “If you’ll be my enemy, I’ll be your enemy, too.”

“Dirty Mouth” by Killing Kuddles

From Sinking Ships. Shhh…. don’t tell Elwood’s mother, but I hear he has a dirty mouth.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle – MIDI Version Mix

In the wee hours of the morning, I posted my review of “Shoreline Sessions” a new EP and video project from Weapons of Minor Disruption which features Rob from #E2TG favorite The Danbury Lie. Please check it out. It is really cool (that is the short version of my review, btw).

Last night another of those quintessential East Nashville musical happenings. Hanging out in a kind of funky, kind of divey space with awesome people (many of them incredible musicians) listening to top notch music. Last night, it was the East Room with Kent Eugene Goolsby, Lew Card, and Joey Kneiser and the Living Flames.

Tonight, #E2TG Artist of the Year Jon Latham is playing a FREE show at Soulshine Pizza beginning at 7:00. It is a wrap up to his being Local Artist of the Week for Lightning 100.

“Anyone’s Game” by Leapfrogtown

Leapfrogtown are a London based band. This song is from their forthcoming album Dreaming on Public which is due out in a few weeks. This was my first listen, and I really dug this. Expect more….

“Pinyin” (MIDI Version) by Batkhi Dahn

So far, we have played the Instrumental Version, the regular version, and now the MIDI version. One more version of the latest Batkhi Dahn single to go. Autotune version coming soon.

“Soft Apocalypse” by Smokey the Firebear

Between the Weapons of Minor Disruption review, the Batkhi Dahn song, and now this one – it is kind of like Connecticut day around here. I have never been to Connecticut. Seems like I need to remedy that. “Soft Apocalypse” is rough mix from the album Ohm Atlanta which is due out in February. The rough mixes have been taken off of Bandcamp in anticipation of the release of the completed album, but there is a ton of music and sounds still out there. Including the CD version of BNGFKR for the incredible price of just $420 (only six remaining – they are going fast… okay probably not).

“Shot in the Dark” by Le Folli Arie

Le Folli Arie are a Prog-Pop band from Milan. A very interesting sound that I like quite a bit. Check them out.

“Sinking Ship” by Killing Kuddles

Of late, I have been rocking my Killing Kuddles swag around East Nashville. He has been a favorite around here for a long time and continues to be. This is a single released last year that I think you will like.

“Harperia” by vod

We featured the instrumental version of this political song from Canada. Here is the version that features the vocal abilities of Gabriel of The Gabriel Construct whose album Interior City was featured heavily here a couple of years ago. I could not find a video for this song, so in the Video Playlist below you will find footage from the live debut of The Gabriel Construct from last October.

“Get It” by Daphne Willis

A ridiculously infectious and upbeat song from Nashville singer-songwriter Daphne Willis. It is the title track of her recent EP. So, do like the title says – get it!

“Alien’s Trip” by Le Folli Arie

We close with another cool track from Le Folli Arie.

“All I Need” (Radio Edit) by The Boy From the Crowd

Another track from the Where the Bees Come to Die. This is actually the “radio edit” of a song from that EP. Heavy Blues based alternative rock. I’m digging this music a bunch!

“MacGillcuddy’s Reeks” by Warren Zevon

Another track from My Ride’s Here – Zevon’s 2002 album. This one is set against a traditional sounding Irish reel.

“All At Once You Unzipped” by Bill Lloyd

Feeling the Elephant established Bill Lloyd as the king of Nashville power pop – a crown his has held onto and reclaimed over the decades that have followed. Infectious melodies and wicked guitar work… check the video playlist for a recent performance of Bill Lloyd proving he still wears that crown.

“American Dreaming” by Killing Kuddles

A long time favorite of Ear to the Ground. This is a track from the EP Sinking Ship which was released back in June. Punk-spirited folk/pop music from the 21st Century.

“Keep Your Distance” by Richard Thompson

Richard Thompson at his absolute best – from his classic album Rumor and Sigh.

“Surf Explosion” (Video Edit) by Martin Cilia

This is another track from the awesome Instrumental Rock sampler I got via Continental Magazine. Martin Cilia is an Australian guitar player – best known as a long time member of the classic surf rock band, The Atlantics. He more recently joined the long running Australian new wave band, Mental as Anything.

“Where Do I Begin” by Wilco

Another track from the recent Wilco album,Star Wars.

“Would You Love Me” by Stone Cupid

Another track from the forthcoming and fantastic album by Stone Cupid – The Cardinal. Stone Cupid is the powerhouse Nashville band that backs up Julie Christensen – a punk rock survivor – perhaps best know for her long association with Leonard Cohen – which includes appearing in the 2005 tribute show for Leonard Cohen which resulted in the film, I’m Your Man. She performed “Anthem” alongside Perla Batalla at that show, and a new version of that song appears as a Bonus Track on The Cardinal. Christensen has been living in Nashville for a few years, and she has put together a top notch band.

“Summer Wine” by Lana Del Rey

We close out the first post of November with a nostalgic look back… kind of… It’s Lana Del Rey with Barrie-James O’Neill of Kassidy with a cover of a song written by Lee Hazlewood and most famous covered by Nancy Sinatra who sang the song with Hazlewood in 1967.

Hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another month. My Facebook memory thing reminded me that it was a year ago today that I came off of my self-imposed hiatus and returned to posting daily morning shuffles. It’s been quite a year, and I have to stop and thank everyone who helped make it so. All the readers, artists, and all the people who have sent me music. That last group has increased exponentially – especially in the last month or so, and I have been struggling to keep up. I want to give all the music I receive a fair listen, and so I beg patience as I try to listen and respond to as many submissions as I can. Believe me, it is a great problem to have for someone who loves to hear all kinds of music.

Another song from Whiskey Shivers from the Austin band’s self-titled album. Yep!

“Nobody” by Killing Kuddles

Long time #E2TG favorite Killing Kuddles from Atlanta, Georgia are back with a new EP called, Sinking Ship. This is our first listen to that album. All I can say is that it’s great to have Killing Kuddles back in the shuffle!

“When it Rains” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Jonquil Child – the debut album from Singer-Songwriter Tiffany Huggins Grant is due out on July 7 (a week from today!). Boasting Huggins Grant’s incredible vocals, some wonderful songs, and top-notch Nashville production from #E2TG favorite Mark Robinson (plus some great Nashville musicians), the album has become a favorite of mine since I got my hands on it. She is playing a CD Release show in Nashville on July 18 at Douglas Corner. Should be a good time!

“Sleep All Summer” by Crooked Fingers

Crooked Fingers was formed by Eric Bachmann following the breakup of Archers of Loaf. They have had rotating cast of musicians backing Bachmann. This song is from their 2011 album, “Breaks in the Armor”. This was my first real listen to this band, and I like what I’ve heard.

“Blackspot” by Jonas Howden Sjøvaag’s Navyelectre

I always like to receive music that I would be unable and unlikely to hear otherwise – also proof that I do listen to music that comes my way. Navyelectre is primarily the music of Norwegian artist, Jonas Howden Sjøvaag. Some improvised music with elements of electronic pop music. Highly original and a great addition to my shuffle.

“14” by Sam Morrow

Sam Morrow returns to the shuffle with another track from the Seahorse Session. This one is about starting drinking at age 14. Morrow recently celebrated 4 years of sobriety (which I post only because it was on his Facebook page), and it is very clear this music comes from a richly authentic place.

“Some Things Stay” by Brock Zeman

Like Sam Morrow, I wrote about Brock Zeman and connected via social media, and then kind of lost track of him. Recently, I was fortunate to see him play an incredible round at the Bluebird, and I was reminded of what drew me to his music in the first play. Great songs, a unique voice, and a rich sound. From Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil’s Back.

“Why Do the Heathen Rage” by Guadalcanal Diary

Our third Georgia related band. Marietta’s Guadalcanal Diary’s debut, Walking the Shadow of the Big Man is one of my favorites of all time. This song is among my favorites from that album.

More music from Connecticut avant garde, experimental, whatever band Batkhi Dahn from Plays 15.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – The Motel Angels Sing Mix

Temperatures started plunging yesterday in Nashville, but your favorite music blogger didn’t let that stop him from exploring some of the city’s mid-week music offerings. And neither did I. Here’s the scorecard: 1. Hanging out with one of my favorite musician’s managers and a top notch Nashville singer/songwriter and watching the granddaughter of an outlaw country music legend rock the house. 2. Meeting said granddaughter and some of her band. 3. Watching three of the absolute best songwriters around kick off their tour. 4. Making triumphant return to Fran’s Eastside (first time since December 17?) and hanging with some cool folks and hearing some amazing music from some of my insanely talented friends. Yeah!

This morning, it was as cold as… well you’ll have to come up with your own saying, I’m still too cold to think straight. Here are the songs that valiantly tried to keep me warm… well they sure made being cold more tolerable.

Okay, if you consider yourself a fan of modern folk music, and you haven’t heard Richard Thompson’s Rumor and Sigh (or even if you haven’t heard it in a while) then you need to remedy that shit, and I mean now.

“Junkie Love” by Darrin Bradbury

Always a highlight of his live shows…. ladies and gentlemen, the 2014 Artist of the Year for Ear to the Ground! Lesson: when you are in a crappy motel room in New Orleans, and you overhear an interesting conversation in the adjacent room, you put a cup up to the wall and you write that shit down. From the demo collection, When a Car Becomes a House. Maybe, probably a fleshed out version of this song will be on the forthcoming Darrin Bradbury album.

“Too Much of a Good Thing” by The Sons (featuring Bret Reilly)

Okay, this song is from the Dumb and Dumber Soundtrack, and in my haphazard research, I could not find out anything more about the band or the featured guest. I found one band called The Sons who broke up some time recently, but it does not appear to be the same band. It’s a cool song.

“I Hope This Whole Thing Didn’t Frighten You” by The Hold Steady

Sometimes events prompt me to add certain artists to my active playlist. In late December, Darrin Bradbury was part of a sold out show in New York that featured Craig Finn of The Hold Steady. Hence, I added this song to the list. I’m pretty much absolutely glad I did. This is from their latest album, Teeth Dreams.

“Common Mistake” by The Bad Years

Another track from Noisetrade’s Best of What’s Next 2015 playlist. The Bad Years are from Los Angeles, and Common Mistake is their first single. Check them out.

“Killing Time” by Dead and Lovely

More from the talented new Nashvillian’s who call themselves Dead and Lovely. A perfect soundtrack to the beginning of my single digit walk.

“American Dreaming” by Killing Kuddles

The latest music from our favorite punk folk rockers/folk punk rockers. Killing Kuddles is from Atlanta and is associated with the Autumn + Color label. Hoping to hear much more music in 2015. In the meantime, get this tune… it rocks!

“No One is Lost” by Stars

Stars is a Montreal band. This appears to be their latest single, and the title track from their latest album which was released in October. Groovy tune.

“Down Where The Drunkards Roll” by Richard and Linda Thompson

Another reason why I like using the shuffle to decide the songs and their order each day… If I had contrived a playlist that began with Richard Thompson’s “God Loves a Drunk” and ended with Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Down Where the Drunkards Roll”, I would have probably chickened out thinking it was too contrived. But, since it was the shuffle making the decision for me, I can just sit back and revel in the wonder of beginning and ending the shuffle this way.

Just in case you joined us late, we are looking back on some of our favorite music from 2013, and doing it as only Ear to the Ground would… I created a Playlist with favorites released in 2013. 2013 was a great year for music. Many of your favorite E2TG artists released new music this year, some new favorites were “discovered”, and there was even some notable releases from artists you frequently read about on those “Brand X” music blogs. All of those and maybe even more are included in the Playlist. We’ve been shuffling through that playlist all week, and we will continue until the end of the year (and maybe a day or two more).

Some notes:

I claim 2013 as a victory because I got to know Tim and Susan of Tim Lee 3. Whether you are interested in Bassett Hound Rescue, BBQ, or just some awesome tunes, they are your source. When I heard their 2013 album Devil’s Rope, I honestly didn’t know much about them – other than that they were from Knoxville, Tennessee and participated in CXCW. Devil’s Rope seemed like this near perfect distillation of all the music I love tied up in a unique and original sound. Turns out, the heart of the band has direct links to many of the people who I grew up listening to in my smaller market eastern middle Tennessee youth. I had the great chance to meet them in October and see them play an all-to rare Nashville show.

The album Play With Your Toys by The End Men of Brooklyn contains two instrumentals which true to the titles demonstrates the great things that can happen when talented people play.

His name is Elwood and he performs under the moniker Killing Kuddles. If that alone doesn’t get your attention, then give a listen to his music. “”He brings a grungy, punk spirit to a folk troubadours’ heart (or maybe it’s the other way around).” Some genius music blogger said that. He released Odd Man Out this year, and it was one of my favorites of 2013 – which is why it’s represented here. Duh!

The Blind Owl Band play contemporary music on traditional instruments, and the result is well… nothing short of greatness. In my dream E2TG Festival, these guys will play back to back to back sets with The Imperial Rooster and Black Jake and the Carnies.

Lys Guillorn came to our attention via The Grimm Generation for which she often plays. This year, she released her first solo album in a decade. The wait was worth it. Winged Victory is flawless music that twangs and twists in all the right places. It’s pretty much unlike anything we’ve heard, and I hope more and more people will check it out.

Ex-Drive-by-Truckers (which is now more of a trivia item than a necessary introduction) Jason Isbell just keeps making great albums that push the American/Folk/Alt-Country/Country labels forward. He doesn’t need any help from me, but hey, I love listening to his music, and in case you haven’t heard him….

I’m not sure what most people will think when a 40 something white guy from Tennessee tells them to listen to a 20 year old Hip-Hop/Rapper/Poet from the Midwest that he heard about from another 40 something white guy who grew up in the same Tennessee town. I just hope they listen. By the way, neither of us are anywhere close to typical 40 something white guys from Tennessee. Also, Christian Robins is not any close to a typical Mid-West Hip-Hop artist. He dropped his debut KidGrownUp this year.

EdTang is from Asbury Park, New Jersey. He dropped one of the most interestingly titled albums of the year, Goodbye, Zen 5, Sushi Dinner. I don’t know what that means, but the album is filled with some of the best folk/Americanaish rock, I’ve heard. The songs are amazing.

So, can I confess something, I don’t really know much about the Blues. I’ve listened to a lot of the greats of the early to mid 20th Century, and several bands we regularly feature have a strong foundation in the Blues. I’ve heard a lot of Blues music that really didn’t do anything for me. So, when I was asked to give a listen to Mark Robinson‘s new album, I was worried that it would be really good Blues music, but that I just wouldn’t get it. Boy, talk about unfounded fears. I’ll leave it to the true Blues aficionados to explain why they love Mark Robinson (and judging my many, many awards and accolades they do love him), and I will just speak from the heart as a music fan. Oh my God this is incredible stuff. I mean, I could listen to him play guitar for hours, and being a non-musician that is saying something. Robinson is a prominent Nashville musician, and he recruits some amazing players for his second solo album. The only thing I’m left wondering is how did I miss out on this guy until 2013?

Besides their team-up cover EP, Mr. Kind also dropped an EP of original songs in 2013 which are notable for pushing the band’s sound forward and for the heretofore (at least from my perspective) clean-up Brian Bergeron singing about heavy drinking and even dropping an f-bomb as he does on the EP opening song which we feature today. Well played, Mr. Bergeron, well played.

Both Too Much Country and I were in the audience when Amelia White and Jon Byrd sang this song at the Five Spot back in September on the 40th Anniversary of Gram Parson’s death.)

“Jesus Christ” by Big Star (from Third/Sister Lovers. One of my favorites. Eef Barzelay, Bill Lloyd, Grimey and others did this song at a Record Store Day event at Grimey’s shortly after Alex Chilton passed away)

“Foxgloves” by Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons (from Old Believers. I first saw Cory Chisel opening for Peter Case a few years ago, and I have been a fan every since.)

“Come a Little Closer” by Cage the Elephant (from Melophobia. I think Cage the Elephant are simply one of the most exciting bands around. This is the first single from the band’s latest album.)

“TDB” by Its Teeth w/ Travis Orbin (from Divided. Some more awesome Instrumental Post-Rock from this project which Gabriel of The Gabriel Construct turned us onto.)

Let’s jump back into the Shuffles with an extended mix of music.

As usual, time is short – so no dilly-dallying. Which is a shame, really, because I am so good at dilly-dallying….

“Just Poppin’ Out To Fight a War” by Cropdusters (we grabbed this off the September edition of the Feel Bad for You monthly mixtape. Don’t know much about this band – except they were British and were under-appreciated in their day.)

“Separations” by Diarrhea Planet (The red hot Nashville band with the attention grabbing name. My advice – get past the name and dig the music. – On Infinity Cat Records)

“Love Has No Pride” by Linda Ronstadt (‘Cause seriously, seriously – what other blog will transition naturally and unironically from Diarrhea Planet to Linda Ronstadt? No offense to other music blogs, but when it comes to awkward and bizarre transitions – there aren’t many who can (or who want to) touch E2TG)

“Everyone Knows” by Ghost Pal (Another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Section 4 compilation. Ghost Pal are from Brooklyn and they rock in the funkiest, coolest way possible)

“Mrs. Wurley” by Humming House (from a Noisetrade live album. Nashville neo-traditionalists offer up more of what they do better than most)

“I Shall Be Released” by The Box Tops (Alex Chilton and company cover Dylan. Need I say more?)

“Every Mile” by The Parson Red Heads (A Portland band from a Paste Magazine sampler)]

“Dropped the Pop” by Killing Kuddles (one of my favorites from his Odd Man Out EP. Come to think of it, I think I’ve said this about almost every song on the record. And I meant it, too!)

“Repo Man” by Those Darlins (To help celebrate the release of the landmark Blur the Lines album by the Nashville favorites – how ’bout we check out their cover of the Iggy Pop song from the Soundtrack to the 1984 Alex Cox film. Bonus points if you understand how the subtitle of this post and the movie are related)

“Real Estate” by Wild Child (the more I hear from this Austin band, the more I like)

“Every Time I See a Plane” by Casey Black (really dig this song by the Nashville singer/songwriter)

“Rhymin’ and Stealin'” by Beastie Boys (’cause. Just ’cause.)

“Requiem for the Disconsolate” by James Crawford (’cause sometimes when the heavy metal kid from high school grows up and makes a record… I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favorite albums of the autumn. Official release is just a few weeks away)

“See See See” by Ani Difranco (a live version of a non-album cut. From a recent Noisetrade sampler)

“Ava” by prattle on, rick (from his brand new album Some Quiet Majesty. Another new favorite of mine)

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – A Little Poison Mix

Things are hopping. Music is being made and released and for a part-time, amateur music blogger, it can be a bit overwhelming… but in the best way possible. I can only say if you’ve sent me music in the past few weeks; I beg patience, and I promise – I’m listening and will be posting soon…..

Today we have a mix of music to delight and inspire – but that is every day, but today is especially delightful and inspiring, but so is every day. Ah hell, comparisons are stupid. We have a great mix of music, and so, let us leave it at that.

“Wrong Way Street” by The End Men (Matthew and Livia are currently tearing it up through the European continent – from the picture there have been some amazingly cool shows including at least one with people juggling fire.)

“Rock and Roll is Dead” by Killing Kuddles (From Odd Man Out. Killing Kuddles is spectacularly awesome, and I really want everyone to know it. Check it out!)

“Good Soldiers” by Glory! (Some rockin’ reggae from the Gulf coast of Alabama. Positive vibes and groovy beats, y’all)

“I’ll Be Coming Home” by Brad Jones (Nashville-based singer songwriter who we have been featuring for the past couple of months)

“Wanting Peace” by The Coal Men (I saw and met chief Coal Man, Dave Coleman, last week at the 5 Spot where he did a solo set. The solo set blew me away, and as I dig into this album – one of the ones I alluded to at the opening of this post, I continue to be impressed. Expect much more on this in the days and weeks to come)

“The Ballad of Souls Departed” by The Dexateens (from Singlewide. In the wake of the bands impressive showing at this past weekend’s Americanarama event, I’ve been loading up my playlist Dexateens music. They have a brand new EP called Sunsphere which dropped today.)

“Poison” by Grayson Capps (This is one of the songs that Willie Sugarcapps did at Americanarama, and I had to get this added into my playlist. A spicy gumbo of New Orleans meets Nashville. Just the way I like it!)

“Dancing in the Bulrushes” by Jim Testa (from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 4 compilation)

“Manifesto No. 4” by Shooter Jennings (from Family Man. Waylon’s boy done good)

“Weatherman” by Stoll Vaughn (I dig this. According to his website, Stoll Vaughn is a Kentucky born singer/songwriter and the co-founder of a Los Angeles based artist development company)
