Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Part Two

First of all… Tuesday? Really? Just Tuesday?

Second… how about a couple of my favorite Christmas songs…

Third… Rest in Peace to Mr. Ray Price. In seeing some of the news reports, I was most struck at how his voice held up into his late 70s/early 80s. So smooth…  Thanks for the music.

Now… to today’s music…

Our journey back through some favorites from the year that will soon enough be ending…  Shuffle style…

“It’s All Wrong” by The End Men

“I Should Have Listened” and “Today is Gonna Be a Better Day” by You and Me

“Stuck” by The Coal Men

“Double Brahma” by Valued Customer

“The Flame” by prattle on, rick

“Bloodhound” by Jeanette Lynne

“Muskegon Harbor” by Taco Land

“Sailing Stones” by Monks of Mellonwah

“Daddy Fool (Svelt Mix)” by Tipi Valley (from Rock ‘n Roll Lives On)

“Love Doesn’t Mind” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza)

“Two Weeks on the Ocean” by James the Giant (from James the Giant)

“Broken Heartland” by The Coal Men (from Escalator)

“Onward” by The Danbury Lie (from ?)

“Modern Lives” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza)

“The Hoover Farm Exorcism” by The Imperial Rooster (from Cluckaphony)

Highlights:

The End Men – of course.

You and Me (glad to receive some music this year from one of the bands we’ve been following for a long time.  Also glad to have two songs in a row from that album in today’s shuffle)

I feel like I was late to the party with The Coal Men. If, like me, you are just now discovering this great Nashville band, Escalator is a great place to start.

Before 2013, I knew I liked Valued Customer, but I wasn’t completely sure why.  This year with the release of their truly mind-blowing/expanding Kalpa, I have become convinced that this wacky kids from Toronto are nothing short of musical geniuses…maybe just geniuses.

prattle on, rick is another Nashville-based “discovery” from 2013. Looks like I caught on just in-time for his fan-only release A Decade Begins and the album from which this track is taken, his extraordinary Some Quiet Majesty.

Likely, Taco Land and Tipi Valley have very little in common.  One is from south Texas and the other from coastal Wales. They have both been featured prominently on this blog for some time. And they both had impressive releases in 2013. In listening today, I heard something (subtle) to connect these two great artists/bands.  Always good to have long time blog friends/supporters in the shuffle.

Monks of Mellonwah are releasing their debut album as a series of EPs.  The first two parts – Ghost Stories and Afraid to Die were released in 2013.  The final part will be released in 2014.  Some awesome hard rock from down under.

James the Giant released one of the most beautiful/painfully touching records of the year.  The song featured today is dedicated to his brother who was killed in Afghanistan.

The Danbury Lie and The Imperial Rooster have just about nothing in common except that they both released incredible music in 2013 that I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing and sharing.  There will be much more on both of these bands forthcoming.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Scary (Good) Mix

Happy Halloween!

First off – we have a treat!  How about the brand new video of a song we presented a week or so ago.  Our friends Those Mockingbirds released the song “How to Rob a Bank” back on the 22nd of October.  Now they have an instructional video.  An Official Video anyway… Here it is!

I never quite have it together enough for a holiday-themed shuffle… but today, the Randomizer came up with alien arachnids, electrical discharges, monks, extinct birds, and puppets.  Which can create some pretty frightening images if you use your imagination.

Jump to see what I am rattling on about… if you dare… bwahahahahaha!

“Ziggy Stardust” (Original – Bonus track on the 1990 CD Release) by David Bowie ( from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars – stripped down and just plain awesome… with God-given ass…)

“Make it Together” by Beachwood Sparks (from Paste Fall Pre(View) 2013 (from Desert Skies. This song was the b-side of the L.A. Americana bands’ first single from 1998 – Desert Skies.  The long shelved debut album – also called Desert Skies is going to be released later in the forthcoming month.  We have a link in our web-store if you are interest. I really dig Beachwood Sparks even if I am late to their parade.)

“Afraid to Die” by Monks of Mellonwah (from Afraid to Die.  The band is releasing their new album in three parts.  We featured the first part – Ghost Stories over the summer, and Afraid to Die- the second part was released at the beginning of this month.  This is the title track.  Really like the Monks of Mellonwah)

“Confidence” by The Dodos (from Carrier. A San Francisco indie band.  The album Carrier was released back in August.)

“The Greatest Lie Ever Told” by Puppet Rebellion (from Chemical Friends EP. Puppet Rebellion are a band. They are from Manchester. England – not the Tennessee town where Bonaroo is held. They formed in 2013 – which is this year. Chemical Friends is their first release – a three song EP. “The Greatest Lie Ever Told” is one of those three songs.  It fairly awesomely rocks.  I came to their music via a Twitter Follow – near as I remember.  Check them out.)

“May” and “June” by prattle on, rick (a couple of spring/summer songs from his ambitious A Decade Begins album)

“After the Glitter Fades” by Stevie Nicks (some cool California music from the early 80s. Honestly, this is more “country” than at least 80% of what gets passed off as Country these days. – Old man rant ends now)

“Day Dreamer” by Wild Child (another nifty song from this cool record by this awesome Austin band)

“I Will” by Sebadoh (from the new album, Defend Yourself, from Lou Barlow’s 25 year old Dinosaur, Jr. “side project”)

“Downfall” by Monks of Mellonwah (from “Afraid to Die“.  This progressive and pretty darn cool Australian band is releasing their next album, Turn the People, as a series of EP releases.  We previously featured some songs from the first EP of the set – called Ghost Stories. This is our first taste of the 2nd EP – called Afraid to Die) which was just released last week.)
“Memphis Won’t Leave Me Alone” by Mark Robison (going back to his first solo album – Quit Your Job – Play Guitar)

Warner E. Hodges from this past Saturday’s Royal Court of China Reunion at Foobar. Nashville.

Had a blast this past Saturday witnessing a reunion show by Nashville Rock legends Royal Court of China with special guest Warner E. Hodges on guitar.  As an added bonus, the band was introduced by the cover model from their self-titled debut album (she was actually Japanese).

Onward and upward, we have another great collection of music this morning, and as usual, the accompanying Playlist includes the songs from the Mix or if the actual song was not available (or locatable) in video form, another song by the same artist.

Pre-Shuffle (songs from my morning drive):

“The Moon Dead in the River” by Wendy James
“Bad Feeling” by The Beat Up (formerly known as The Beatings)
“Who Are You” by Ivan and Alyosha
” This Time Around” by Royal Court of China
“Vanity” by Monks of Mellonwah (from their excellent new EP Ghost Story)
“Blood of the Saints” by Dave Hogan (who I got to see at the Nashville Songwriter Festival a few weeks ago with a h/t to Jason from Grimm Generation)
“Trip” by Canopy Climbers (from their awesom album Miles)

Shuffle commences right after the JUMP

“The Ledge” by The Replacements from Pleased to Meet Me (1987)

A stand out track from a great album, and a highlight of one of the best damn rock shows I ever saw (‘Mats at the Armory in Nashville on the Pleased to Meet Me Tour).

“Flawless Executioner” by Christopher Paul Stelling from Songs of Praise  and Scorn (2012)

new album False Cities

I am a big Christopher Paul Stelling fan. This Brooklyn based singer-songwriter seems to be getting the attention he deserves.  He just released his latest album False Cities which is amazing and is out on an East of the Mississippi tour which will bring him to Nashville’s famous Bluebird Cafe in July.  We dug up Flawless Executioner from his previous album Songs of Praise and Scorn.

“You Make Me Rock and Roll (The Penelopes Remix) by Tom Tom Club original version on Downtown Rockers (2012)

Tom Tom Club is just beginning a huge European Tour which included a performance this past weekend at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival. In honor of the band’s appearance in Paris, France. The Penelopes’ have done up a pretty cool remix of the Downtown Rockers’ track “You Make Me Rock and Roll” It had me dancing into the office this morning…

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Plough Deep Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

I can’t think of a better way to start my day than listening to “Shine” by Great Divide – what a joyful song. Oh wait, I know.. how about starting the day with two Great Divide songs in a row. “Fast Train” is awesome because I am a total sucker for “train” songs.

The Joy of Painting, in addition to being a classic PBS series hosted by the late Bob Ross, is a Nashville band who we’ve been digging on for a year or so. They have a brand new album called Tender Age, and today we have the catchy and generally just awesome “Back to Romance”.

Back in the day, I completely fell head over heels for “Walk in the Woods” and subsequently all of Peter Case’s self-titled solo debut. There was something clear and authentic and true about that album.  When the follow up to that album was released, needless to say I had some pretty high expectation which Mr. Case met and exceeded many times over.  The Man with Blue Post Modern Fragmented Neo-Tradionalist Guitar contains so many enduring songs (Traveling Light, Entella Hotel, Two Angels and This Town’s a Riot to name just a few). “Poor Old Tom” is for me a stand out on an album of stand outs. A heart-breaking song, it is loaded with some amazing lines. “He fought for freedom, never took a free breath”. “The night wind’s free to blow wherever it pleases, Tom’s free to walk until the cold daybreak.”  “The worse disease in the world is to be unwanted, to be used up and cast away”.  In just under four minutes, the listener is drawn into this broken, tragic life… it’s nothing short of brilliant.  The other night, I decided to add some older songs into the current mix – just to shake things up a bit. I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to this song in the 24 years since it’s release, but I never grow tired of it.

Moving on… Ghost and Goblin are a New York band who first came to our attention in a shout of from The End Men.  They released an album called SUPERHORRORCASTLELAND back in April or so, and we’ve featured several songs from that record.  “Look at the Clouds” is perhaps one of my favorites. A uncharacteristically breezy melody kicks into a more characteristic menacing hook. The album is out there on Bandcamp – check it out.

The Michigan band Decades are three kids who grew up on punk, ska and metal and then discovered the smooth pop songwriting of the 70s and 80s and the alternative radio rock of the 90s.  The result is something surprising.  Their music rocks and the punk/ska spirit still sits at the bottom of what they do, but layered on top is a focus on great pop songwriting and a genuine love of the music. “Popping Veins” from their album Deep Deep Pink Sessions is a good place to start.

Earlier this week, June 10 to be precise, was the 103 anniversary of the birth of Chester Arthur Burnett. You may know Mr. Burnett better as Howlin’ Wolf and stone-cold authentic Mississippi Blues Man. “Smokestack Lightning” is one of his earlier songs and draws upon several earlier blues songs.

We’ve been covering a lot of music by the Vegas band Coastwest Unrest. Today we have the song “Empty Handed Painter” from the most recent release High Times on Lowly Streets which came out back in April. I sure hope you’ve checked out this band by now. If not, do it!

SHUFFLE BEGINS NOW… JUMP!

  • “Dream Up” by Wheelchair Sports Camp from their Where We All Live EP (2012).

  •

Of the many ways I come to the music featured on Ear to the Ground, the more random ways are my favorite.  I get alerts on my phone the Bandsintown app. A few weeks ago, I got this alert that Flobots had a announced a show in town, and as I began clicking links and searching around, I saw where Wheelchair Sports Camp was opening up some shows this summer for Flobots and the name intrigued me.  I’ve written at length in earlier posts about the band, so I’ll just say, I’m continuing to love this music.

  • “Embers” by Joshua Worden from Always This (2013)

We’ve featured Joshua Worden quite a bit, too. This silky smooth Atlanta RnB Pop artist came to us via a publicist – which is another way we find out of about music.

  • “Sailing Stones” by Monks of Mellonwah from Ghost Stories (2013)

The Sydney band Monks of Mellonwah are another band that came to us (a year or so ago) from a publicist. They are getting ready to release a new EP called Ghost Stories, and we got an early listen.  So far, I’m impressed by the melodic power of this record. You can check out their earlier releases where you usually get music. The songs featured here will appear on the band’s full-length album Turn the People which will be released later this year. Regardless of how I come to find out about a band, one of my stated goals of Ear to the Ground is to keep my mind and my ears open. The press release touts many of the band’s music industry achievements.  If you want to know that stuff just ask, and I will send you what I received. For me, though, it’s about the music, and this music is very good.

  • “Told You So” by Human Face from The Waiting Game (Part One) (2012)

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=3666200720/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/notracklist=true/transparent=true/

Human Face came to us the “old-fashioned” way – i.e. the way we first had to discover new music when the blog was too new for publicists to even know about us.  They followed me on Twitter and I checked them out.  What impresses me about Human Face is the incredible melodies, the modern take on some music of an earlier era.  For reasons unclear to me, I am reminded of 70s-80s UK band Squeeze.  Human Face does not sound like Squeeze, but like that incredible band, they combine strong songwriting, a contemporary sensibility and healthy does of Motown soul.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Per Annum Mix

May 15, 2011

This is my very first post, and I don’t know exactly how this is going to work.  A more informative post will follow, but I want to see how this works.
If you are reading this, it worked just fine.  If not, well – it didn’t.  Or something….

– Work-in-Progress
________________________________________________________________________________
Thus began Ear to the Ground: A Music Blog – one year ago today.

By the numbers:

1 Year
12 Months
52 Weeks
366 Days (leap year)
8,784 Hours
527,040 Minutes
31,622,400 Second
Over 400 posts
Over 21,000 Page Views

We started at Posterous, and toward the end of 2011, we moved over here to Blogger. There is so much I want to tell you about the experience I have had writing here. Numbers do not begin to tell the whole story. I didn’t know what I wanted the blog to be – I think I somehow thought my cleverness and handful of personal accounts of shows seen and songs heard would sustain this blog. Truth be told, if not for the amazing music I’ve come to love, the friendships (musicians, fellow bloggers, fellow music fans) I have come to treasure – I would have quit this experiment a long time ago.

I can honestly say that the best ideas I’ve had for Ear to the Ground have come about by following my heart. The converse is probably true as well, whenever I get a bright idea, I’m best to set it aside until it seems right.

Enough, at Ear to the Ground, we do like to look back every now and then, but what we like better is moving forward….

_____________________________________________________________________________
Added a bunch of songs to the list last night – here’s a shuffle:

The Monks of Mellonwah hail from Sydney, Australia. Today we have the radio edit of the title track to the forthcoming Neurogenesis EP (May 24). (The full track is below). The band recently won The Best Indie Rock Band in the Artists In Music Awards in Los Angeles.  The band worked with some real heavy weights on the Neurogenesis EP and one track in on the May CMJ Mix-tape. So the year ahead should be a big one for the band. And now they are on Ear to the Ground so… 😉

https://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F38598373 “Neurogenesis” (2012) by Monks of Mellonwah by independentmusicpromotion

Next,  We have some aching country blues from the delta region of New Jersey… okay I’m not sure if New Jersey has a delta, but regardless – Jo Wymer’s music comes from a swampy and soulful place.  Stay Away from Me is from her 2011 album Living with Scars.

And finally, we have a track from forthcoming (May 29) Sun Kil Moon album Among the Leaves. The song is called That Bird Has a Broken Wing . Thoughtful, intelligent alternative music. Sun Kil Moon features Mark Kozelek  of Red House Painters.
