I had a fun time last night.  Jeff Blaney and band started a month long residency at The 5 Spot.  Renee Wahl was the special guest the first night. She was backed by Daniel Seymour and Patterson Barrett.  Her songs and her voice were as spectacular as always.  Jeff Blaney’s band included Seymour, Justin Amaral, and Chuck Foster on keyboard.  They sounded great.

Before that show was over, I had the great opportunity (thanks Mary) to get a sneak peak at the newly renovated 12th and Porter which is set for some Grand Opening shows this weekend with shows by Chuck Mead and Humming House.  The venue had a long history in Nashville, and it was good to see it ready to open once again. The free food and drinks were nice, too.

Back to The 5 Spot in time to catch the tail end of the beginning of the Whiskey and Women night with Michaela Anne.  Also on the bill, Joanna Barbara, Lauren Farrah, and Jesse Lafser.   Quite an amazing night of music.

Tonight, The 5 Spot is the place again to settle in for the night…  It is night one of another residency, this one featuring the great Paul Burch and the WPA Ballclub. Burch was one of the artists who helped to revitalize lower Broadway in Nashville in the early 90s. Burch and the WPA are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year with the release of Meridian Rising (about the life of Jimmie Rodgers) on Plowboy Records (featuring Jon Langford, William Tyler, Billy Bragg, and Tim O’Brien).  This residency is a don’t miss kind of Nashville event. Special guest tonight is another of Nashville’s finest songwriters, Kevin Gordon! 

A last minute cancellation set the stage for a pretty killer late night show featuring 2014 E2TG Artist of the year, Darrin Bradbury; 2015 E2TG Artist of the Year, Jon Latham; Chris Watts, Elli Perry, and Buck N Stuff (a Buck Owens tribute band that features East Nashville stalwarts, Adam Kurtz, Cameron Carrus, and Lemuel Hayes). 

I am looking forward to tonight!

“Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” by Jesse Terry

We start thinks out with a gorgeous cover of the Don McLean classic.  From Terry’s album The Calm and The Storm.

“Beside the Little River” by The Shakers

Next up, a taste of some of the most unique and wonderful music coming out of Nashville in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  From the album, Songs from Beneath the Lake.

“Imaginary Friend” by Ships Have Sailed

Our second listen to Mood Swings in as many days.  If anything, I think this track even better than the one we played yesterday.  A great sound.  Check them out.

“The Killing Floor” by FADES

FADES are an Alt-Rock band from London that formed in November 2014. This song is on their self-titled EP.  Dig it! 

“Gnomes” by Zaibatsu

From this Italian band’s album Zero.  Heavy sounds!  Pregressive rock.

“The Stingray Shuffle No 1” by The 427’s

Some more instrumental rock music from the Continental sampler CD we have been spinning of late.  The 427’s are from Calgary.  I am happy that this recent exposure has reignited my love of this style of music.

“Candy” by Dave Rawlings Machine

We close out today’s shuffle with a sticky, sweet and delicious selection from Nashville Obsolete.  No doubt in my mind that Dave Rawlings Machine is the absolute best this town has to offer, and this is music that is going to be talked about for a long time.

“186” by The Vigilance Committee

From the album Exit a Hero – some most excellent, proggy sounding, Indie Rock out of Long Island, NY. 

“Watching the Sun Go Down” by Kevin Gordon

We’ve started listening to Kevin Gordon’s forthcoming album, but this one goes way back to his 2005 album called, O Come Look At the Burning.  We got it off a Noisetrade Sampler that this still available at that site.

“Trap Door” by Stars

Stars are from Canada.  Their Facebook Page lists their genre as Melodramatic Popular Songs, Amazon lists it as Alternative Rock.  E2TG doesn’t care too much for genres.  Pretty upbeat fun sounding music. 

“SGS” by Grumsling

Another track from our new friends from Oakland, California.  Grumsling are one of my favorite “discoveries” of the year so far.  This song is from their 7 song release from 2014 called Full Coverage

“Noise” by Jesse Terry

Connecticut based singer-songwriter Jesse Terry with a track from his latest EP called, The Calm and The Storm. This is one of those  gorgeous songs that seems like it should have always existed.  From some reason, it struck me that this song would not be out of place on Billy Joel’s classic Cold Spring Harbor – and I mean that as high praise. 

“Pictionary” by APE MEN

“Edgy indietronica formed on the post Iron Curtain fringe of the European Union.”  From their debut EP Zero which was released earlier this year. Pretty cool sounds… and a fun reminder of when me and my sister ruled at Pictionary the game.

“Destroy Me” by The Naddiks

The Naddiks are a high energy Alternative band from Canberra. This is the opening track from their EP called 21cb. 

“Mama’s Don’t Let Your Cowboys Grow Up to be Babies” by Dale Watson

So far, the shuffle has moved between singer-song writers and alt/prog/indie bands from all over the world.  Let’s bring this whole mess together as only E2TG can… with Dale Watson covering Tony Joe White’s answer to the Ed and Patsy Bruce song made famous by Waylon and Willie.  This song is on Dale’s latest album Call Me Insane.

“Changing of the Guard” by Jesse Terry

After posting a song from Jesse Terry for a Noisetrade sampler, I figured out we have several mutual friends on Facebook, and I got hold of a new album – also available on Noisetrade called The Calm and The Storm.  This song is from that album. 

“Millionaire’s Dream” by John Wesley Harding

I will go with calling this a deep cut from Why We Fight? In this sense, the term means that as much I love this album and can immediately identify almost all of the songs on the album when they begin to play, I had to give this one a thorough listen.  I like it, and I’m not really sure why it didn’t stick in my brain the way others songs from the album did.

“I Wanna Lose Control” by Deathray

This song is from the soundtrack of the animated movie, Open Season.  That soundtrack featured several songs by Replacements’ front man Paul Westerberg.  For some reason, my music player identified this song as being by Paul Westerberg.  Interestingly enough, if this had been a Paul Westerberg song, I would have viewed it as a disturbing point in his career, but realizing it was not Westerberg but a California New Wave/Pop band that existed from 1998-2007 made all the difference, and I kind of dig the song in a light and airy kind of way.

“All Mod Cons” by The Jam

The title track from one of my favorite albums of all time by one of my favorite bands of all time.  Man those Brits had something going on in the latter part of the 1970s.

“Truth or Consequence” by Susan James

Susan James’ new album Sea Glass is due out in just over a week.  On the record, James has shed much of the Americana vide of her last album, Driving Toward the Sun (2013) which was excellent in it’s own right.  Here, the California singer-songwriter embraces her roots and makes a classic California Pop record for the current day. 

“Philosophize In It! Chemicalize With It!” by Kishi Bashi

This was part of the World Café 100 song download I recently posted about.  Kishi Bashi is the recording project of  Kaoru Ishibashi (Jupiter One, Of Montreal, Regina Spektor).  This song is from the 2014 album Lighght and was performed on The Late Show with David Letterman.

“Someday” by Steve Earle

 A great song from Steve Earle’s classic Guitar Town album.  Ear to the Ground favorite Lindsay Ellyn performed a cover of this song at her recent EP Release show.

“Stacy Main” by Black Vincent

Black Vincent is a new project from Coley Kennedy (Welcome to Ashley, The Buddies).  The album was recorded in Nashville by producers Adam Landry and Justin Collins.  I dig this song quite a bit, and I look forward to digging into the rest of the album. 

“You’re Not Alone” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Another song from Jonquil Child, the forthcoming (July 7) album by Nashville singer-songwriter Tiffany Huggins Grant.  The album was produced by and features Ear to the Ground favorite Mark Robinson among other Nashville heavyweights. For me the stand out feature of this album are the stunning vocals by Tiffany Huggins Grant. 

“She Knows What To Do” by Stacy Mitchhart

We shall close out of first shuffle of the week with another Nashville stand out.  We have been featuring songs from Stacy Mitchhart’s Live My Life album, and we just have one track left after this one.  This is real live, uncompromising Blues music.  Mitchhart can be found just about any night down in Printer’s Alley in downtown Nashville laying it down at Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar.

“I Feel Like My Time Ain’t Long” by Essie Mae Brooks

Via the Music Maker Relief Foundation… Essie Mae Brooks was born in 1930 and began singing with her grandfather, who was a harmonica player, and she begin singing and writing Gospel music as a child.  She has never stopped.

“To Miss Someone” by Maria McKee

Another beautiful song from the self-titled debut solo album by the former lead singer of Lone Justice.

“My Friend From College” by 100% Beefcake

I don’t know which is stranger: a couple of young Connecticut teenagers singing about a friend from college, that said teenagers call themselves 100% Beefcake, or that they music they produce is both delightfully weird and downright awesome.  It’s all strange to me, but then again, I like strange.

“McLane’s Dad” by Mothers

New York band Mothers album Panamanian Times has been floating around our playlist for several months now, and it is always cool when another song pops into the shuffle.  This one is called “McLane’s Dad”.  A refreshing breath of punk rock attitude in the middle of a Wednesday shuffle.

“Beast of NYC” by The End Men

I honestly thought 2013 Ear to the Ground Band of the Year, The End Men were the Beast of NYC… but they are definitely Beast-like in their power and intensity.

“The World Ender” by Lord Huron

Lord Huron is an L.A. band.  This song is from their latest album, Strange Trails which was released earlier this year.  The gorgeous recording I listened to came from a World Café session and was one of 100 songs that World Café made available for immediate download (visit the World Café Tumblr page).

“Sweet Tennessee” by Judah and the Lion

As I have mentioned, Judah and the Lion are a fast-rising band from Nashville.  Judah Akers happens to be the son of two people I went to school with years ago (a year or so apart).  The song is the title track from an EP that was released in 2013. It is a lovely tribute to my home state.

“Stay Here With Me” by Jesse Terry

Jesse Terry is a Connecticut based singer-songwriter who will be appearing at Bonnaroo later this month. I know this because this song was on the Noisetrade Bonnaroo compilation album.  It is the lovely lead and title track from their 2013 album.

“Alison’s Starting to Happen” by Lemonheads

A classic from the classic album, It’s A Shame About Ray…

“Andy’s Song” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

“I hear the drying leaves
Tumbling down the sun coated hill
They crumble in my hand
And they leave another void to fill”  A lovely song from the EP Forgiveness…
