Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

So, I’m back after a few days of R&R. It was much needed, and I’m ready to do this thing!

A couple of things, I returned to Nashville on Saturday in time to catch Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen deliver a powerful performance at their album release celebration.  Then, I headed to Bobby’s Idle Hour to see Amelia White, Renee Wahl, and Rich McCulley trade wonderful songs for a couple of hours.  After that, my long day caught up with me.

LIVE MUSIC ALERT!!!!!!  I’ve announced this on Facebook (if you haven’t already be sure to give us a “Like” – you can get there via the link up top.  The next “Like” should be number 300 and a surprise is in store for that lucky follower.  Anyway, two days from now or Wednesday August 19, we will be kicking off what I hope will be a long running series of shows.  We will start off at The Building in East Nashville with local favorites Lindsay Ellyn (plus her awesome and well-dressed band) and Russell Thompson (one of my favorite songwriters) plus all the way from North Carolina, we have George Terry McDonald.  It should be a fun night, and I hope if you are nearby that you will come on out.  (Here is the Facebook Event Page).

I think I have mentioned before the role that college radio and specifically (WRVU) played in the development of my musical interests and passion. As you may know, WRVU went off the air a few years back after Vanderbilt sold the license to the local public radio station.  Some of the people who made WRVU what it was and some of the people who loved what it was are in the midst of raising funds for a new Community Radio Station called WXNA.  They have a Kickstarter campaign going and could use some support.  So much of media is in the hands of a few large conglomerates who are “tryin’ to anesthetize the way that you feel” (Elvis Costello, Radio Radio).  Community Radio is the voice of the people, and it is a good thing.  If you can support WXNA, you should. Here is the link to the Kickstarter (Give and/or Share this).  Who knows, someday, you may hear me on the radio… but only if you support the station.

On to the shuffle:

“Ribbons” by Paul Zografi

We start off with another track from Nashville’s Paul Zografi’s album Bright.  Love this album!

“You Could Have Had It All” by Jesse and Noah

Another gorgeous song from Jesse and Noah’s album Driven Back.

“Gotta Serve Somebody” by Amy Black

Amy Black covers some Bob Dylan from her album The Muscle Shoals Sessions.

“Dogs of Lust” by The The

I have always loved the name The The, and the music, too. This one is from the 1993 album Dusk.

“Our Love Will Change the World” by Christopher Aaron Slade

Call it a Guilty Pleasure (well Christopher Aaron Slade did…), but I really dig this music.  Fun and naughty and rocking… like music should be…

“I Want to Be You” by The Stone Foxes

The Stone Foxes are from San Francisco.  This song came to me from a Noisetrade SXSW Sampler – which shows how long it has been floating around the playlist.  Their new album Twelve Spells will be released in September.  This song was released as a single back in March.

“Miss Misery” by Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield

From World Café: Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield cover Elliot Smith.

“Every Minute” by JJ Grey and Mofro

Also from World Café… this one if from their latest album called Ol’ Glory which was released earlier this year.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Guess That I Just Don’t Know Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js I guess that I just don’t know… Shuffle after the jump—

Shuffle: “River” by The Delta Saints from Death Letter Jubilee (2013) – The Delta Saints come from Nashville but their music rises like the high humidity from a swampy place down where the Mississippi River joins the Gulf of Mexico.

“A Switch Behind the Poster? (Let’s Push it!)” by Black Doctor Jr. from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen – Section 5 (2014)/Single (2013) – The good doctor returnes to #E2TG with their latest single which is compiled on the latest Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation (the fifth, I’m guessing) which filled with great music. The song is chunky and soaring and freakin’ awesome. http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=378487843/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/transparent=true/http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=2678306607/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/transparent=true/“99 Shades of Crazy” by JJ Grey and Mofro from Alligator Records: 21st Century Blue and Roots (2014)/This River (2013) – We’re all crazy – get over it.  Some southern blues rock from Jacksonville, Florida from a recent Alligator Records compilation.

“Sleep/Whatever” by Ghost Pal from God Save MCFK (2013) – some sweet psychedelic sounding pop music from another Mama Coco’s band which is fronted by the ubiquitous Oliver Ignatius the man behind the curtain at the Funky Kitchen.  Which provide a good opportunity to remind you of their on-going plan to build-out a new space.

“Heroin” by The Velvet Underground from The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967) – I’ve never done heroin.  Thanks to Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, I feel like I don’t need to… 47 years later VU are still way ahead of the time.

“Perfect Storm” by Jenny Leigh from Tipping Point (2013) – A nifty Country song by a powerful singer – fairly recently relocated to Nashville.

“Shops” by The Jean Jackets from Field Theory Blues (2013) – I just realized I’m a whole album behind on this great indie pop band – yet another Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen member.  Memory and time shortages allowing, I will catch up, but in the meantime, check out this evocative final track from their second most recent album.

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=677418331/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/transparent=true/“Too Many Cuts” by Pork Chop Willie from Love is the Devil (2014) – North Country Alabama blues with a Brooklyn edge helps make this album by Pork Chop Willie one of the best of 2014.  Garnering a lot of well deserved attention from the Blues community, the music is fresh and suitable for music fans of all types. Highly recommended!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Fly Over Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Some may say, I take way too much pride in presenting morning shuffles that span such a diverse landscape of musical marvels.  Some may say I would be far more successful if I focused on one genre or only wrote about those certain “buzz worthy” artists that you can read about in all of the other music blogs. Some may say, I should stick to the script and just echo back the language of the music promoters and publicists.

I don’t bother responding except to offer up today’s pre-shuffle and shuffle.

PRE-SHUFFLE:

“I’m One of Three” by EndAnd (new punk music from Brooklyn)
“River Rose” by Meat Puppets (the post-punk legends are back)
“Bangs” by Valued Customer (some music from our crazy friends from Toronto)
“‘Til I’m With You” by Neighbour (More from the awesome Kacie Williams)
“Waiting for Something New” by Mozes and the Firstborn (This band is from Antwerp and I first heard  them over  the weekend – dig it)
“Cloudy Morning Blues” by Black Cold Bottles (Modern rock from Sao Paulo)
“Where You Going Northern” by Game Theory (Your daily dose of the genius of the late Scott Miller)
“Love and You” by Jeanette Lynne (more music from this amazing Philadelphia area singer-songwriter)

 SHUFFLE AFTER JUMP

Okay, okay… like me, my shuffle button is in love with this young hip-hop artist currently from Wisconsin. Check it out, if you haven’t already.

  • “Rule the World (feat. C4RV) (prod. Since’93) by Christian Robin from KidGrownUp (2013)
I’ve often said that once of the best things about writing Ear to the Ground are the incredible people I have met and “met” as a result of the blog. Some time last year, I heard this awesome track called “Frank Ocean” by a group called Valued Customer. I dug it and I even Featured them on Ear to the Ground.  These young guys are completely nuts, and I’ll be honest about half the time, I don’t understand exactly what’s going on with them, but mostly, I am completely charmed by their awesome weirdness (which goodness knows I can appreciate). We are finally about to get some new music from Valued Customer, but I couldn’t wait. So, I headed over to their Bandcamp page and downloaded some older music.  The song “Bangs” was in the Pre-shuffle.  For the shuffle, the following track came up….
  • “WELCOME” by Valued Customer from Babylon Hill (2012)
Okay – so what we have here is the opening track of the Babylon Hill collection. We have a guided meditation with a warning not to listen while driving.  I’m not sure but I think I’ve been brain-washed into really digging these guys.

  • “Somebody Else” by JJ Grey and Mofro from This River (2013)

What better way to close out this uniquely Ear to the Groundish Mix of music than with some smooth modern blues from the new album by the long-running Florida band JJ Grey and Mofro.
