Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Brilliant, Shining, and Nasty Mix
Today’s Mix after the JUMP
Pre-Shuffle:
“The Line Which Divides” by Liquid Casing (progressive, political, personal)
“Old Soul” by Sam Morrow (Some very good modern folk music from California)
“Move Together” by James Bay (British Soulful Stuff)
“Rain On” by The Blind Owl Band (new music on old-style instruments from NY)
“Daughters of Ursa Major” by Chris Schlarb (At almost the same time I discovered this music, they were playing a show here in Nashville – at the Stone Fox… bad timing, but good music. I hope they come back soon.)
“Supersoaker” by Kings of Leon (Nashville’s homegrown arena alt-rock stars are back with some eagerly anticipated new music)
And the next song takes us into the Shuffle:
“Make the Music Go Bang” by X from More Fun in the New World (1983)
As I was coming of age, musically speaking, my good friend, Rex Silo published a review of this album in our exceptional high school newspaper, The Charger. I fell in love with this record just based upon his review, and when I finally heard it, I was hooked totally. X are back on tour this summer and fall with B-52s for some dates and with Blondie for others. You can hear the infant sounds of Americana, Alt-Country etc. being birthed this album as punk, rockabilly met some of the most amazing songwriting of this or any other era. Still one of my all-time favorite albums.
“Someone Like You” (Adele Cover) by Valued Customer from “Fun Covers”
In anticipation of the release of Kalpa (widgeted above), I downloaded some older VC stuff, and I’m glad I did, because it looks like they have removed their older material from their Bandcamp Page. So – as we’ve said and said again, check out Kalpa. The song today is from a nifty little covers album which features deconstructions of some (at the time of recording) current pop hits as well as a classic soul song.
“Careful, Body” by Great Forest from Me and My Friends EP (2013)
Great Forest are from Arkansas. They play a pretty nifty kind of Indie Rock.
“Highways Long” by The Blind Owl Band from This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel (2013)
A nifty bluegrass-inspired “road song”. Set in the South by a band from New York state.
“Rough Carpenters” by Black Twig Pickers from Rough Carpenters (2013)
This band originates near the Virginia, West Virginia state line, and they make music inspired by the mountain
“Triggers and Trash Heaps” by Centro-matic from Fort Recovery (2006)
Another great song from Texas Band Centro-Matic.
Friday Morning Music Shuffle – The Myth is This Mix
Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Log Jam Mix
and tote only for money”)
“Everywhere I Go” by Caitlin Rose (“In a room out of town There’s a picture in a drawer
of all that could have been and all that came before Standing in the light or hiding in the dark”)
Tell me what happened to you such a long time ago And all your friends, well they have no clue Who are you when no one is around?”)
PRE-SHUFFLE moves into the SHUFFLE with the next song
There’s a part of me that wants to hide, there’s a part of me that wants to move in.
Cuz even though I, I grew up in the suburbs I didn’t really grow until I learned how so many others lived. But this is only a song, it can’t change the world.”)
Someone prepped the reel and let it rip–– the camera slipped through leaves”)
Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Your Own Chosen Speed Mix
Some lyrics from “New Jerusalem”
“civilizations like chocolate donuts
if one isn’t good enough a hundred won’t be good enough”
“running to new jerusalem
the towers are in the exosphere
goodbye you whores of babylon
trumpets are playing burning spear”
“(hide your daughter hide your wife
lock up all your beets and chives
they’ll kill you for your salt and spice
the end of twitter and being nice)”
1. Night, which is the newish album from Beijing (the band not the city). The band comes from Connecticut. Today’s track is “Into the Rain”. The album is a great achievement. On it, the band walks a precarious balance which could have easily sent them plummeting into one of several miasmas. The band and this album successfully navigates these treacherous paths.
2. In 1986, I started hearing this awesome song on the college radio station. It was rollicking and dark and hinted at something just outside of my vision. I eventually bought the album which quickly came and has remained a favorite of mine. The artist and album are called Peter Case. The song is “Walk in the Woods“.
Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Ring True Mix
“Spitfire” by Little Radar from Up in Arms
http://noisetrade.com/service/widgetv2/1e538bf6-4f6a-4288-a027-146a2ea252b7
This Austin, Texas band jump starts our Shuffle with a track from their 2012 album Up in Arms. Check out the Noisetrade sampler above which includes a track from the forthcoming Souvenirs album.
“I Won’t Go Hollywood” by Bleu from Redhead (2003)
Another from this older album by Bleu which I picked up earlier this month on half priced Saturday at Goodwill. A great find!
“All of Nothing” by The Black Clouds from Better Days (2012)
More grungy goodness from New Jersey.
“Let Down” by Beijing from Night (2013)
Connecticut rocks! It seems like it’s been a few days since we featured a song from this brilliant album by Beijing. This is the second song from this album today. Enjoy!
“This Land is Your Land” by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings from Naturally (2005)
We close out the day with this incredible cover of the Woody Guthrie standard made even more awesome by the fabulous Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. This version of the song was featured in the motion picture Up in the Air
PLAYLIST
Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Waters Part Mix
First off, sending love to the family and friends of Faye Hunter original bassist with Let’s Active on her recent passing. Several Facebook friends knew and worked with her and are hurting. If you are not familiar with Let’s Active – get caught up.
Not a lot of time – so we will jump into the mix.
“True Blue” by Bright Eyes from Lua (2004)
I dance in blue shoes and wear a blue hat.
Live in a blue house, on a blue street,
in a blue town by a blue creek.
I write my blue songs with my blue pen.
I sing the blue notes to my blue friends.
Now I don’t know that much about you,
but I like you because you’re true blue.”
“Howling At the Moon (Sha-La-La)” by Ramones from Too Tough to Die (1984)
I want to steal from the rich and
Give to the poor”
“White Doves in the Psychic Temple” by Christ Schlarb from Physic Temple (2010)
The mix is closed out by Chris Schlarb of California with some nifty experimental jazz stuff. Coolness.

PRE-SHUFFLE:
“The Mighty Midshipmen” by Centro-Matic from Love You Just the Same (2003)
Another track available on a massive 24 song free download via the Band’s Bandcamp page. This Denton, Texas band features Will Johnson from Monsters of Folk and have been making music together since 1995.
“Homegrown Tomatoes” by Guy Clark from Songs and Stories (2011) (Original Version was on Better Days (1983)
The legendary singer-songwriter performs, a classic song about the popular fruit which often pretends to be a vegetable.
“Dromedary” by Dog Without Warning from Bark (2013)
One of favorite releases of 2013 was the surprising Bark EP by Bay Area band Dog Without Warning. This is the last song on that EP, and it is a charmer. Give a listen and try not to smile.
