Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Egg Cream Mix

Some days, I like to provide a detailed and creative commentary of the connections which exist between seeming unconnected songs.  Some times, though, I just like to let these songs sit together awkwardly at the table while I sit back with a conspiratorial smile on my face (even then I have no co-conspirator).   Today seems like a good time for the latter….  enjoy the awkwardness, but remember that the connections exist even if we cannot see them….

“Surrounded” by Dan Coyle from Perfect World, Perfect Beat

Ear to the Ground featured some music from Dan Coyle back in 2013.  He is about to release his latest album (Perfect World, Perfect Beat drops October 21), and we have been able to hear the album ahead of it’s release.  Expect more to come. Good stuff!

Another of the cool new songs I’ve been able to preview from Darrin Bradbury.  He is doing a showcase at the Basement on Wednesday, and then a show at the Five Spot in November.  Meanwhile, catch him around Nashville and you’re likely to see me nearby as well.

Couch by Couchwest 2014 rocks on!

 



Day four ended with a pair of videos of two of the absolute gems of my town.  Gretchen Peters and Dave Olney. 

Day five ended with music from two of the amazing musical couples I’ve had the good fortune to meet as a result of writing this blog.

The End Men ROCKED!!!!!! a brewery and provided more evidence (as if it was needed) as to why I named them Band of the Year for 2013. I’m a sucker for the saxophone – so yeah!

Day five ended with Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray offering up five songs from their recent wedding.  They will be swinging through Nashville in a week and half or so on their triumphant honeymoon tour.  I’ll be there.  Will you?


One of the highlights from Day 5 was a Talking Heads cover performed in a lovely backyard living room by Atlanta’s Sans Abri.


Finally in non-CXCW news – Last week, I had the good fortune of meeting Marla Mase and Tomas Doncker. I already wrote about that.  Marla and Tomas returned to New York and on Tuesday, they joined the rest of the True Groove All-Stars for a celebration at The Cutting Room.  True Groove Global Soul is the artist run record label founded and run my Tomas Doncker.  When I met them, I took home a stack of True Groove CDs and I am really impressed at what they are up to.  The All-Stars included the newest True Groove signee, legendary No Wave saxophonist James Chance.  Here’s a review of the show.

Well, well, well…  I thought we had covered a lot of musical ground yesterday, but we may have just topped ourselves.  You be the judge.

We start things out with a performance of a Ukrainian folk song.

1.  “Ой Полечко, Поле (Oj Polechko, Pole” by Katarina Ljahovic, Mike Romaniak, Patrick Power and Stephen Kreuger (by the way, Patrick Power is better known to E2TG readers as 1/2 of Valued Customer, and he may well be a musical genius in my book)

2. “Old Friend” by Sea Wolf (another cool track from the L.A. based Indie Rock band who take their name from a Jack London novel)

3.  “This is a Notice” by Mic Harrison and the High Score (This is Knoxville Rock! Mic Harrison was a member of the V-Roys and Superdrag before teaming up with The High Score.  This song is pretty damn awesome raver.)

4.  “Psycho Killer” (B-Side featuring Arthur Russell) by Talking Heads (a recently released alternate take of the Talking Heads classic featuring a well utilized Cello)

5. “Only Sixteen” by Craig Douglas (1959 cover of a Sam Cooke song by a UK Pop singer)

6. “Boys Keep Me Up at Night” by Jeanette Lynne (another gem from the You’ve Got Me album)

Friday Morning Smart Playlist – 400th Post Mix

So… yeah, this is the 400th post since we switched over to Blogger.  

Big thanks to Shelly Colvin for the invite to her CD release shindig.  If you haven’t already, go check out her brand spanking new album Up the Hickory Down the Pine.



And it’s Friday and I’m unexpectedly off work today, so I did one of those random smart playlists on I-tunes selecting from my entire collection and here are the songs that came out.

Thank You for Sending Me An Angel  is the opening track from Talking Heads second album and the first of three produced by Brian Eno,  More Songs about Buildings and Food.  Released in 1978, the album also included the band’s of the Al Green/Mabon “Teenie” Hodges song, Take Me to the River.

 

The one and only Charlie “Yardbird” Parker is up next with Moose the Mooch/Lullaby of Birdland.
Moose the Mooch is was written by Parker, while Lullaby of Birdland was written about Parker and the legendary jazz club which which was named for him by George Shearing.




The Fresh and Onlys are a San Francisco indie band that formed in 2008.  Their latest album is entitled Long Slow Dance which was released on the Mexican Summer label at the end of this past summer.  Do What You Came to Do is the final track on that album.


Here is the first single off the album

Nashville singer-songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones is part of the Ten out of Ten collective.  Home appears on the 4th Volume of songs released under the Ten out of Tenn name.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Lingerer Mix

We go stumbling forward into our week. Unsure of our direction and our destination, but ever mindful of the composition of the surface of the road we walk upon.  

MP3 player is now fully reloaded, and we are ready to shuffle  through some of the songs most recently added.

We start out with a cover of an iconic song from the 1980s.  August Featured Artist, The Holograms – featuring our friend Galen Wade – are back with a post-modern version of  the Talking Heads classic, Burning Down the House .

Next up, we have a song by the band Superdrag, the Knoxville, Tennessee based Alternative band.  Superdrag front man John Davis was recently a guest at the Big Star tribute show during the Americana music festival.  This one goes back to 1995 and the band’s first full length album The Fabulous 8-Track Sound of Superdrag. The song is called Sugar.

Next up we have a song from the most recent album by first wave punk pioneers, The Mekons, who are celebrating their 35th year as a band this year.  The band’s 2011 album is called Ancient and Modern and the song today, Geeshie, has a old-timey feel to it.

Finally, we have Canadian Corb Lund from his recent album Cabin Fever with a song co-written by Jason Boland of the Stragglers and Texas singer-songwriter Hayes Carll, and performed by Lund and Carll. Bible on the Dash off the album Cabin Fever, is a great example of the Country side of Americana music.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Super Couple Mix

We had some bad storms roll through between 1:00 and 2:00a.m. which wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t have to wake up at 4:30. Blah…. But, lack of sleep is part of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle right? Whatever…

Here we go… part of the fun of letting the magical mystery shuffle option pick my morning music playlist is when theme emerge out of the randomness of it all.  Or perhaps, the theme is all in my head… does it matter?

Actually a couple of thematic things happened today, but the overarching them as expressed in the subtitle of today’s post is Super Couples of Music….

First Super Couple is George and Tammy.  The classic (We’re Not) The Jet Set name drops Rome, Georgia; Athens, Texas; and Paris, Tennessee. Explore more about this song by clicking the picture below:

 
Super Couple #2 has back-to-back tracks on today’s shuffle – which make’s sub-theme #1 – The Chris and Tina show:
1st up is Take Me to the River is the classic cover of the Al Green classic song by Chris and Tina’s earlier band called Talking Heads – maybe you’ve heard of them.
2nd up for the Chirs and Tina show is the 2001 version of the 1981 hit single Genius of Love by Chris and Tina’s later band – Tom Tom Club.

Tuesday Music – Ascenseur pour l’échafaud Mix

Yesterday, I found out what happens when you drop a cell phone into the gap in the doorway of an elevator.  Hint: The phone can be retrieved, but even rugged phone will not escape unscathed. 

Long story short, my phone which doubles as my MP3 player is out of commission at least as a MP3 player and playing hurt as a phone.  Texting is still possible, though. With no way to shuffle music this a.m., I am forced to do something different – I hope you dig it.
