Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Pt. One

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

It’s here… time to begin our look back at the year which was 2013.  In true E2TG style, for the remainder of 2013 we will shuffling up a special playlist which includes some of our favorite songs from the past year.  I’ll let the song speak for themselves, but we will be highlighting some of our favorite E2TG related albums of the year as we move along.

About Band of the Year.  After two successful Band of the Year polls (by page view numbers, Band of the Year and Band of the Month polls dominate our statistics page for most viewed), so it is only after careful consideration that I’ve decided to forgo the Band of the Year poll for 2013.  Basically, it comes down to the fact that I would rather see independent bands cooperating and collaborating than competing.  We had some memorably good fun with some of our polls – especially the first annual Band of the Year poll and the legendary February 2012 Band of the Month poll that came down to a dogfight between MAKAR and The End Men.  As time went by, and I began featuring more and more bands, the idea no longer seemed to be in the spirit of this site.

I will be naming the third annual Band of the Year within the next couple of weeks.  Meanwhile, enjoy yourself as we relive this year that almost was.  If you feel so inclined, share some of these posts with your friends near and far.

Before we jump into the first of our Favorites’ shuffles for 2013, I need to rectify something….

#E2TG Hall of Fame (Notable Omissions):

More names will be added to the Hall of Fame in early 2014 – and my progress on the completion of the Hall of Fame page has hit some unexpected delays, but I’ve became increasingly uncomfortable knowing that two of my favorite E2TG artists have not been added to the Hall as of yet.

1.  Ubiquity Machine/Howard Rabach  – In using the tagging feature to determine our Hall of Fame, one thing I failed to take into account were the many fine bands/artists you came to prominence in the months when E2TG was still housed on the now defunct Posterous site.  Howard Rabach was one of the first readers of the blog to step out of the shadows.  His band, Ubiquity Machine, was one of our early Bands of the Week. The band finished second in our first annual Band of the Year poll, and he has remained a good friend of Ear to the Ground ever since.  UM has been kind of dormant of late, as Howard has been doing some freelance stuff.  Check out his Facebook page here. So it is with great pleasure, that I usher in UM/HR to a spot of honor in our Hall of Fame.

2. The Grimm Generation – Another thing I failed to take into account in my tagging system of Hall of Fame eligibility is the variant tagging which sometimes occurs. Blogger places a 200 character limit on tagging so sometimes I have to shorten band names – like leaving the “The” off.  That is the only explanation I have for The Grimm Generation not being in our top 20 tagged artists. Still this unique and frankly awesome collective from Connecticut (headed up by the amazing Jason Krug and Carmen Champagne), are well deserving of a prime spot in our Hall of Fame.  Hell their latest album, The Big Fame even has “fame” in the title. They have consistently made music which I love and which seems timeless in its wonderfulness.

Now… let the 2013 Shuffles begin

“When I Cry” by Jeanette Lynne (from You’ve Got Me)

“Infatuation” by Dog Without Warning (from Bark)

“Temporary Thought Exchange (AKT A Cappella) by Its Teeth (from Divided)

“Goodbye Summer” by Jonny Fritz (from Dad Country)

“Spittin’ Lies” by Nikki Sue and the Bad News (from Nothing Gold)

Highlights:  Of note, in our first shuffle of the year end playlist, we have a couple of talented female artists from the Northeast who came my way directly or indirectly via the visionary music guru Popatunes.  Jeanette Lynne is from Philly and Nikki Sue is from New Jersey.  They both write great songs that fall into the Americana/Countryish/Folk-like genres (if you are into genres).  The important thing is that make great music and they both had releases which were among my favorites for 2013.

Dog Without Warning hail from the greater bay area of California.  They came to my attention via CXCW and I featured some music off their indie flavored concept? album Go Girl.  The follow up was released as an EP earlier this year, and it was a revelation. Bark uses acoustic arrangements which serve to highlight the songwriting skills and humor of this band.  Bark quickly moved into my favorites category and has stayed there as the year has progressed.

We recently featured the Its Teeth track which features Gabriel from The Gabriel Construct as well as the Jonny Fritz track from the fantastic Dad Country album.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Power of Equality Mix

Time is short, and we have some nifty tunes to bring you…

Pre-Shuffle:

We started with an early morning wake up call from our new friend The Gabriel Construct. Yesterday, we featured the first track on his brand new Interior City album.  Today, we heard “Curing Somatization” the last track on the album.  A blistering, challenging 10 plus minute powerhouse filled with some glorious and amazing noise.

Next, “I Wanna Live” by the Ramones

“Leave it All Behind” by Nikki Sue and the Bad News

“Don’t Wanna Die Anymore” by Ivan and Alyosha

“Are You Hung Up?” by Wheelchair Sports Camp

and “Little Mascara” by The Replacements

SHUFFLE NEXT:

“Bless You (For the Good That’s In You) by Delta Rae from Gangster Squad: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture (2013)

The Peggy Lee original is also on this soundtrack.

“Travelin’ Light” by Peter Case from The Man with the Blue Post-Modern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar (1989)

Just one of my all-time favorite songs, and a huge influence on my great unpublished American Novel, The Drift.  Puts a gleeful bounce in my step every time!

“Do You Feel the Same” by Royal Court of China from Royal Court of China (1987)

(Top) Royal Court of China Album Cover
(Bottom) Cover model Yumi with Joe Blanton in 2013

Ears are still ringing from Royal Court of China’s Saturday night set at Foobar. Nashville.  Another track from the self-titled album.

“Tell Me About the Sea” by James the Giant from James the Giant (2013)

We just received a sneak peak of this EP yesterday.  Here’s The Story

The Story

Born after the death of his younger brother in Afghanistan, the dissolution of his band, and the end of a long-term romantic relationship, James the Giant is a resurrection – a recommitment to life, to music, and to love. These songs embody the spirit that James himself carries into his everyday life: a commitment to honesty and an unwillingness to shrink from pain or fear.

The EP was recorded and John Vanderslice’s studio and is due out in mid July.  We will have much more later.

“The Ocean Stole My Love Away” by Christopher Paul Stelling from Songs of Praise and Scorn (2012)

Okay so we’ve been featuring songs from Stelling’s last album, but please check out his latest False Cities and check the Tour Dates below for a show near you…

“Planet of Women” by Sonny and the Sunsets
“Her Changes” by Frank Ryan
“Shooting the Moon” by Ben Shive
“Fox in the Hen House” by The Quaker City Night Hawks
“Get Over” by The Dead Exs (Note: since I couldn’t find a video for “Get Over” we included the video for the title track for their latest album Relovolution. The fan sourced video includes a very special Cameo appearance by the one and only Popa Tunes who’ve excellent blog recently celebrated its Fourth Birthday!)
“Spittin’ Lies” by Nikki Sue and the Bad News (Note: since I couldn’t find a video for “Spittin’ Lies”, I included a video of Nikki Sue covering one of my all-time favorite songs, Folsom Prison Blues)
“Beware the Grackle” by The Peculiar Pretzelmen

 SHUFFLE UP NEXT

“My Sympathy” by Human Face from The Waiting Game (Part One) (2012/2013)

Human Face were kind enough to Tweet some nice words about us the other day. It was most appreciated, but what got them back in the Shuffle was (well besides the random shuffle mode) their amazingly catchy tunes and light, fun spirit.  Check them out if you haven’t.  Go!

“Strawberry Hill” by Bronze Radio Return from Old Time Speaker (2009)

Bronze Radio Return are an Indie Roots band from Hartford, Connecticut.  We grabbed this track and others from their new Noisetrade Sampler. This one comes from their debut album Old Time Speaker. Great song.

“Green” by Canopy Climbers from Miles (2013)

Our shuffle of really strong pop-oriented songs continues with another song from the brand new Canopy Climbers album Miles.  I am thoroughly enjoying this album.

“Screws Get Loose (Extended Studio Version) by Those Darlins Single (2011) (Original version from Screws Get Loose (2011)

We close out today’s Shuffle with one of my favorites.  An extended version of the title track from the most recent Those Darlins album (a new album from the Nashville band is due in the Fall). I dare you to listen and not sing along.  I double dog dare you.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Another Kind of Mix Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

I decided to search through my collection and pull out some bands I’ve featured in the past, who I haven’t had the chance to listen to for a while, and I added a couple into the Playlist from which I draw my daily mix.  Three songs by one of those artists came up in the Pre-Shuffle today. Kafka (aka Wayne Kafka) plays pretty awesome alternative music. I think in the year or so since I heard songs from his Mysterious Skin EP (which was released in 2010), I had forgotten just how good his music is.  “Jump Down” and “Don’t Cry” were the first two songs in the Pre-Shuffle today, and another song “Run with the Buffalo” came up at the end of the Pre-shuffle.

I’ve been listening to and digging on the new album by Nikki Sue and the Bad News, but today’s track goes back, way back, all the way to 2012 and the title track to the Lower Places EP.

Jake Miller’s song “Steven” comes to my playlist via Amazon’s Free Music from Rising Artists list for June. His album is called The Road Less Traveled. Maybe it’s just me, but I think I expected a song by Jake Miller from an album called The Road Less Traveled to be countryish or Americanaish, but this is some pretty cool hip-hop.

I last heard The High Score backing Mic Harrison – at least I assume this is the same The High Score.  In any event, the song is called “I Feel Bad for You” and yes, it does come from the current month’s Feel Bad for You Mixtape.

Next up, I have another track from Wheelchair Sports Camp – namely the title track to the awesome Where We All Live EP. I seriously dig this band.

Our Pre-Shuffle closed just as I reached the parking lot with the aforementioned third Kafka song of the day.

More after the JUMP

Here at Ear to the Ground we arent’ afraid to play the music that other blogs won’t play, and we especially like breaking new artists on the cusp of something.  I’m not even sure where I found out about this band, but I like it. I mean, I don’t see this really catching on, but you know, it’s good stuff….  They call themselves Daft Punk – although neither name seems to fit. Oh well, the have a new album called Random Access Memories, and our song today is called “Giorgio by Moroder”

Of course, when it seems appropriate, we occasionally will present songs by some of the biggest artists of the day. We don’t apologize for this – we are all about music and music comes in all shapes, sizes, styles and levels of popular mainstream success. In the past, we’ve had songs by Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Don Ryan.  Today, we bring you – from Nashville, Tennessee – Skeleton at the Feast with “Paris Syndrome”.  Yeah, I know, you hear this on the radio all day, but you know you like it.

Seriously though ya’ll check out by buddy Hayden Coleman’s friend Levi Skeleton. This Noisetrade Sampler also includes the Hayden Coleman produced, “These Kids”

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Forging a Head Mix

Well, well, well…..

Again and again and again… we keep saying it, but we do have a great of songs. I can almost certainly guarantee that you will not find this mix of songs on your brand x music blog.

From Home to Parking Lot – Pre-Shuffle:  Nashville’s Mystery Twins return to the E2TG mix with another one off their Love is Strange EP. “The Rain Keeps Falling”.

Yet another song from the self-titled album by Chicago’s fabulous Great Divide.  “Step Back”

A newcomer to the E2TG morning mix, Atlanta, GA singer-songwriter Joshua Worden employs a silky smooth R’n’B, Soul favor in delivering his unique brand of Indie Pop. Today’s song is called “Midnight”.

I’m not sure that change of pace is adequate to describe the transition from Joshua Worden to Tear Out the Heart. This St. Louis/Los Angeles Metalcore band have a new album called Violence out on Victory Records.  “Infamous Last Words” is everything you want, need or expect from a Metalcore band.  A definite shot of adrenaline for my morning commute.

Palma Violets are a UK indie band out on the Rough Trade label. “Best of Friends” comes to us today via Amazon’s Free Music from Rising Artists. It is also the lead off track from their ‘180’ album which was released in March.

Pickwick are from Washington State.  “Hacienda Motel” is from their album called Can’t Talk Medicine which was also released in March.  Garage R&B.

Tom Mason is a genuine Nashville character.  He makes Pirate music with his band of Blue Buccaneers – see the video included in the playlist below. This is Tom Mason solo from East Nashville Vol. 3 More Music from the Other Side with “Chaz Pozo’s Shoes”.

Canopy Climbers are three guys who live in three different cities and record via the internet. Their new album Miles is set to drop a week from today, and today we have the first taste in a song called “Stuck”.

As I pulled into the parking lot and then began my walk across the State of Tennessee (I walk across a scale model map) and then up Capitol Hill. I began listening to “Kiss” a song by Scout Niblett a Portland, Oregon via England, singer songwriter.  On this track Scout is joined by the iconic and insanely good Will Oldham (Bonnie “Prince” Billy).

JUMP

I began my walk with the aforementioned “Kiss” by Scout Niblett with Bonnie “Prince” Billy off Scout Niblett’s 2007 album, This Fool Can Die Now.

Sometime, as I walked across the state map – possible just as I was passing over the Great Smokey Mountains (but probably not), the next song in our Shuffle came up. “Sewee Sewee” is by Mountain Man whose ethereal chords first caught my attention with their song ‘Soft Skin’ which was also on their 2010 Made the Harbor album.

By this point, I was walking up the steps leading up Capitol Hill (and wishing I was in better shape), and on this fine, fine still officially late spring morning in Nashville, we had the good fortune of hearing one of our recently discovered favorite local band, Year of October with a song about “Another Indian Summer”.  Digging on this band, and this is yet another favorite of mine from their 2012 album Stories.

And finally, as I was in the home stretch and making my way down the sidewalk toward Charlotte Avenue, “Anchored” came into my ear holes. The song in it’s earlier version was the title track to Nikki Sue and the Bad News’ 2011 EP. This newly recorded version is on the fantastic Nothing Gold which was released this year, and which we reviewed a few weeks back.

It’s Friday and it’s also the last day of May!

Let’s put this month to rest with some awesome tunes…

Pre-Shuffle:

“Moorie” by Great Divide
“Bridge by the River” by Nikki Sue and the Bad News
“Wish I Could Stand or Have” and “Chardonnay” by Game Theory
“Bloodhound” by Jeanette Lynne
“Tear You Up” and “Come In” by Decades
“Drenched” by Wanting
“Tickin’ Bomb” by Shovels and Rope

Shuffle – after le jump… la jump????  The Jump!

  •  “Tables (Acoustic)” by Seth Philpott from a 2013 Noisetrade Sampler original version from Bad Hearts (2013)

Grabbed a sampler from Noisetrade and I’ve become a pretty big fan of this Nashville Singer/Songwriter.  Bad Hearts came out earlier this month.

  • “Don’t Force the Funk” by Wheelchair Sports Camp from Where We All Live (2012)

Kalyn the MC/Producer of Wheelchair Sports camp is 26 years old, 3 foot 6 inches tall and weighs 53 pounds. She has osteogenesis imperfecta a brittle bone condition. She also delivers some kick-ass lyrical explosions and with the rest of the band deliver some vicious beats.

  • “Disaster” by Kopecky Family Band from The Disaster(2010)

Nashville’s Kopecky Family Band have been making music together since 2007.  Their latest album (linked above) Kids Raising Kids is getting some serious National attention, but here in Nashville, we’ve been paying attention for a while now.  I absolutely love this sort of Title track from the band’s 2010 album.

Grabbed this one off an Amazon sampler.  Pretty decent song.

  • “Love Reign O’er Me” by Pete Townsend from The Quadrophenia Demos 2

A stripped down demo version of the Who classic.

  • “Ring of Fire” by 37 Targets from Another Day (1986)

A cover of the June Carter song made famous by her husband Johnny Cash as covered by an 80s band from Chattanooga, Tennessee.  I have a version of this from a vinyl EP called …And it Burns.  This version was included on the latest month mix tape by the fine folks at Feel Bad for You.

Wednesday Morning Music Non-Shuffle + Shuffle – Nothing Gold Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js <!– google_ad_client = "ca-pub-5465441380757075"; /* E2TG #2 */ google_ad_slot = "6306625404"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90; //

Did I happen to mention that I like irony and coincidence and the amazing tendency of life to throw unexpected curve-balls and how that can be a great joy if your mind and heart are open to receive what ever life has to offer?  No? Well, I do.

So, I write a music blog, and I live in Nashville, Tennessee. If you’ve been paying attention, you will have realized I am pretty open-minded when it comes to music. I generally hate genre labels, and even though I tend to think that most mainstream music sucks (I’m an old punk what can I say), I will acknowledge when something mainstream strikes my fancy.

All that being said, I’m constantly amazed and pleased by all of the incredible Country and Countryish music being made all over the world.  Honestly, as far as I’m concerned you can call it Americana, Alt-Country, Roots Music or whatever you want. From Michigan to New Mexico to California to Europe, there is great music being made that owes a direct or indirect nod to The Carter Family, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Hank Williams Sr and so many more legends.  It may carry with it a Punk rock spirit or a pinch of something else….

Ah, I’ve done on long enough.  Let’s get to the business at hand.

Nikki Sue and the Bad News are about to release their first full-length album, Nothing Gold.  The album will be released May 23 (digital only for now) with a release party scheduled for the 24th at the Clash Bar in Clifton, NJ.  I have been given the great honor of getting an early listen.  My thoughts (random and otherwise) commence after the JUMP

Nothing Gold consists of rerecorded versions of songs from the Anchored EP along with three new songs.

Track Listing

  1. “Anchored”
  2. “Best of Men”
  3. “Bridge by the River”
  4. “Knockin’ at My Door”
  5. “Leave it All Behind”
  6. “Location”
  7. “Nothing Gold”
  8. “Spittin’ Lies”
  9. “Who Needs Enemies”

Nikki Sue and the Bad News

Nikki Sue – Guitar, & Vocals
Ben Hutcheon – guitars
Anthony O’Connor – Drums
Steve Salerno – Bass

In this new setting, the old songs sound amazing and compliment the new material nicely.

Nikki Sue (Nikki Ilchert) has an amazing voice and The Bad News are top-notch.  The songs move effortlessly from foot-stomping rave-up to heart-breaking ballads. Stand out tracks for me are the title track, Spittin’ Lies and Knockin’ at My Door, but there isn’t a dud in the bunch. So is it irony for Nashville-based music blog written by a former avowed Country music hater to be writing positive words about what is essentially a Country album by a New Jersey girl and her band?

Some may argue with my contention that Nothing Gold is essentially a Country album, and some may be right.  A Country influence is definitely present along with rock, jazz and some more contemporary influences.  Thing is, Rock wouldn’t be Rock without Country, Jazz and Country have a long, complicated relationship and all of those other contemporary influences have both been influenced by and had influence over the development of “Country” music. See why I think genre labels are dumb?

Here’s the bottom line, Nikki Sue and the Bad News make some awesome, fun and danceable music. Nothing Gold is an excellent jumping on point to get aboard with this talented and fast rising star.

So get ready. The 23rd is only a week and a day away.  If you can’t wait that long, you can check out some older music and get you some Nikki Sue and the Bad News swag over at their  BAND STORE

Meanwhile, I offer up an expanded Nikki Sue video playlist at the bottom of this post.

I listened to Nothing Gold in it’s entirety this morning, and when the last notes of “Who Needs Enemies” faded out, I was still a few minutes away from my office so I did a quick shuffle and lo and behold, the shuffle god worked it’s magic and pulled up two songs in a row from Bark, the new record by Dog Without Warning (which we presented last Friday), and “Flood” and “Nostalgia” provided a great encore to Nothing Gold.
