Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Kilos, Ounces, and Pounds Mix

I’m back!  And rushed again… let’s get this done….

“Short Songs” by Dead Kennedys

Sort of the title track from the latest Feel Bad for You compilation.  Recorded live. 32 seconds or so. First appeared on the Bay Area compilation Can you Hear Me? Music from the Deaf Club.  Later included on the DK compilation Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death.

“In Nowheres” by The Twilight Sad

The Scottish Indie band with a song from their album Nobody Wants to Be Here Nobody Wants to Leave.

“All Over But the Cryin'” by The Georgia Satellites

Another great song from In the Land of Salvation and Sin – the last Satellite’s album to include Dan Baird.

“Southern Grammar” by Hiss Golden Messenger

The title track from the latest EP from the North Carolina Folk Duo…

“Runnin From Miami” by Neighborhood Texture Jam

Another awesome song from the Funeral Mountain album.  The video playlist includes some bits from a 2013 reunion show in Memphis.

“Come Together” by Stacy Mitchhart

A very cool Beatles’ cover from the album Live My Life by the Nashville Blues great.

“Crazy Mother Fucker from Shelby Ohio” by Tim Easton

A stand out track from Tim Easton’s Not Cool album.  The song was written by J.P. Olsen who was an early inspiration for Easton’s songwriting.

“You Wear it Well” by Rod Stewart

From the album, Never a Dull Moment.  I picked up the early period Rod Stewart compilation, Sing it Again, Rod at Goodwill a while back, and this song is included on that album.

“Soul Stroll” by Stacy Mitchhart

Our second track from Live My Life is an instrumental.

“Forest Gum” by New Madrid

From the latest album by the Athens, GA band. The album Sunswimmer was released about a year ago.

“Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone” by Matt Prater

From the new album Tables and Chairs by Alabama Country purist Matt Prater.  This is just flat out a great song.

So, it’s the penultimate post before Ear to the Ground takes a few days off for Christmas. I’m just saying this because I like using the word penultimate. Anyway, today’s shuffle is a good one, and I hope you enjoy.

“Epilogue” by Ben Arthur (featuring Rachel Yamagata)

Following in E2TG’s long tradition of including concept albums in our shuffle and letting the results be what they may, we begin today’s shuffle with the Epilogue to Ben Arthur’s brilliant album If You Look for My Heart.

“Father and Son” by Cat Stevens

I posted a new Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens song a few weeks back, now we have a song from Cat Steven’s 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman.

“Lateness of Dancers” by Hiss Golden Messenger

Deservedly, North Carolina band Hiss Golden Messenger have been getting some favorable attention from some of the folks whose musical attention I favor.  I love this (title) song from their album Lateness of Dancers which came out back in September.

“Aos Pes da Cruz” by Gilberto Gil

Gilberto Gil is a Brazilian musician whose music embodies a diverse range of styles from Samba, Rock, African, and Reggae. He was the Minister of Culture in Brazil from 2003 to 2008.  I came across this in the New Release section on Freegal, and I dig it bunches.  I am so glad I don’t allow myself to be forced into the narrow confines of genres and shit.  This is from his latest album Gilbertos Samba.

“Henry Died in Dm” by Joe Nolan

Another song from his Plain Jane album, and this is a good one. Inspired by the Sam Shepard play, Suicide in Bflat (sorry I don’t have time to figure out how to type the flat sign).

“Henry! Oh, Henry! You don’t look so well!

Are you risin’ to Heaven, or writhin’ in Hell?
Are you bound to play a holy harp or blow a hellish horn?
Henry you been dyin’ since the day that you were born”

“Christmas in Jail” by The Youngsters

Some 1956 Doo Wop Christmas.  Not to be confused with the John Prine song Christmas in Prison which is also great.

“Twinkle (Little Christmas Lights)” by JD McPherson

Keeping the Christmas theme going with a nifty fun song. We have a JD Mcpherson single from a couple of Christmases ago.  This is included on a recently release set of music on Noisetrade.

“Chano Pozo’s Shoes” by Tom Mason

Tom Mason and his band of rowdy pirates, The Blue Buccaneers, are one of East Nashville’s greatest treasures. This is a rollicking fun song from Tom’s pre-Blue Buccaneers’ days. I found it on a East Nashville compilation from a few years back.  The latest album from the band is called The World is Ablaze.  I got to attend the CD release party for that album and Avast ye! it was a good time.

“The Mixture” by Ike Reilly

I swear I think I keep saying this, but this is one of my favorite songs on the recently released megadownload from Ike Reilly via Noisetrade. It is off of the 2005 album Junkie Faithful by The Ike Reilly Assassination.

“Christmas Party” by Eddie and De Havelon

More Christmas.  I couldn’t find a video for this song, nor could I find much about the song or the artist. It came to me from an Aquarium Drunkard mixtape via David Horton.  My Google search mostly linked to the Aquarium Drunkard site and few other references on music websites with very little details available.  It’s a cool song though.  If anybody has information about this, please feel free to share in comments or privately.

“Santa Claus Boogie” by Hasil Adkins

One final Christmas tune to close out today’s shuffle. This is one sure to leave you dancing your way into Monday afternoon.  Hasil Adkins was from West Virginia and it seems as though his life was as colorful as his music.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Freak Out Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js Pre-Shuffle:

1. “Winterlight”/The Autumn Defense/Ten Full Paces

Such a great sound. Saw them live in the parking lot of Grimey’s for Americanarama last September.

2. “living on”/The Lies/whatever
3. “Look in Your Eyes”/Taco Land/Home Sweet Home

During the hiatus, our old friends Taco Land dropped a new album called Home Sweet Home, and this track has such a great sound. It’s everything we’ve come to expect from Taco Land and more.

4. “Tar”/The Jean Jackets/Field Theory Blues

Infectiousness…

more after the jump….

5. “Killing Floor”/Tomas Doncker Band/The Howling Wolf Project

Finally, we get to this amazing release (in my opinion on of the best of 2014. It power of the Blues to express your deepest disappointments and sorrows and to wrap you up in it all and provide a strange kind of comfort. A heartfelt and fitting tribute to a legend.

6. “Safe With Me”/Jenny Leigh/Tipping Point

I met Jenny Leigh at a Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray show at The Basement, and I really dig her music.

7. “don’t know what you have”/The Lies/whatever

Second song from New Jersey band The Lie today and the third this week. Glorious rock and roll.

8. “II”/HIPPIECULT/demo

I don’t know where or how or when I added this to my playlist, but it’s freaking awesome. Jam band music for people (like me) who generally hate Jam band music.

9. “Selassie”/Tomas Doncker/Power of the Trinity

More music from Mr. Doncker.  Smooth and soulful on a global scale.

10. “V. The Meaning of Things (The Dream Lives Ought to See)”/Left of Logic/In Formation

Philadelphia based live electronic music. Challenging and pretty darn cool.

11. “Hold Fast Your Dreams”/Marla Mase/Half-Life

A mellower side of Marla Mase with her trademark spoken word spiels. Another of my favorite records of the year.

12. “Summer in a New State”/Swear and Shake/Maple Ridge
Another of those wacky New York Americana bands that sound like they should come from the South. Oh, and they are one of the best of the whole wacky bunch!

13. “English Rose”/The Jam/All Mod Cons

“No matter where I roam…”

14. “Bushwick Nights”/The Great American Novel/Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen – Section 5

The late great The Great American Novel burned bright and went out big with this Single/Outake/piece of awesomeness. Looking forward to what comes next from the various chapters of this great novel that ended way too soon.

Shuffle:

1. “Love Hammer” by Mellow Bravo from S/T (2012)

Mellow Bravo is a six piece ROCK band from Boston. Another selection from my friend Ronnie B’s mixCD. Did I mention this ROCKS?

2. “Moonage Daydream” by David Bowie from Ziggy Stardust (1972)

“Freak out….”

3. “Red Rose Nantahala” by Hiss Golden Messenger from Haw (2013)

This came off one of those incredibly awesome Feel Bad for You compilations. If you haven’t latch onto that monthly Mix well then, I feel bad for you… er… Hiss Golden Messenger is M.C. Taylor and Scott Hirsch from Brooklyn NY/Durham NC. I dig!

4. “Conscience of the World” by Tomas Doncker from Power of the Trinity (2011)

Why not close out today’s shuffle with yet another great song from Tomas Doncker’s incredible album Power of the Trinity. Why not indeed!
