As I stumble, unwillingly and unwittingly into another work week, I am grateful for a pretty sweet music shuffle to get things rolling…  In this shuffle are some classics, some obscure stuff, and some pretty new stuff.  It is all worth your attention.

“I’m in Love With a Girl” by Big Star

“I never travel far, without a little Big Star….”  Never a bad way to start a week, the legendary Memphis band from their 2nd album Radio City. Power Pop at it’s absolute finest.

“Atlantic City” by Ben Arthur

Another track from Call and Response… Ben Arthur swings for the fences and answers the Bruce Springsteen song from Nebraska.

“When We Was Young” by Black Vincent

This has become one of my favorite albums of the year so far, and I really dig this track.

“Gum in Your Hair” by A Color Engine

A lost classic? Perhaps.  As the long wait for the new Don Ryan album continues, we dive back into this release from his old band with Eric Burchfield of Elephant Goes West.

“Suboceana” by Tom Tom Club

“Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom!”  We complete our revisit to the classic 1988 album by the band lead by the rhythm section from Talking Heads.

“Vigilantes” by The Vigilance Committee

Progressive concept album.  This track really reminds me a lot of the Accomplices EP series from Gypsy West. And that is a very good thing.

“Tiene Cabeza de Palo” by Dale Watson

Another from Dale Watson’s new album, Call Me Insane, and a reminder why Google Translate is your friend.

“Walter Reed” by Ben Arthur

Our second Ben Arthur song of the shuffle – this one is an “answer” to the Michael Penn song, “Walter Reed” which is on his album Mr. Hollywood Jr, 1947.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Call me Admiral Byrd Mix

Yes, I chiseled my way out through the thick blanket of ice and crossed the frozen tundra to make it to work today.  I only fell once, and I don’t think anyone saw me, and anyway, I fell with the grace and dignity befitting of someone of my importance and position. (that is a joke by the way….)

“Easy Weather” by The Bell Hours

Yes, my shuffle function has a sense of humor – as today’s weather was anything but easy, but I digress. The Bell Hours are from Denver, and I have quite enjoyed listening to their most recent EP of which this is the title track.

“Rudie Can’t Fail” by The Clash

The shuffle function seems to be on a major Clash kick, and who can blame it? From London Calling.

“I Only Want to Be With You” by The Tourists

A slice of pure pop heaven from a band that featured Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart just before they formed Eurhythmics. From the album Reality Effect.

“Sam” by Meat Puppets

Classic Meat Puppets from Forbidden Places.

“Élysées 99,84” by Kansas Bible Company

The first track on the new 4 song EP called Dad’s Day by the Nashville based band that has way too many members to keep up with.

“Nobody’s Child” by Maria McKee

Another great track from Maria McKee’s self-titled solo debut. I am glad to have rediscovered this album recently.  Sooooo good…

“Try Out My Love” by Matt Phillips

A great song from Matt Phillips’ debut album Bones which was released in 2012.  Saw and met him at Music City Roots a couple of weeks ago.

“Southern Ground” by Judah and the Lion

Nashville band Judah and the Lion are on roll with appearances on Letterman and a tour of Scandinavia and an upcoming Nashville show at Ryman Auditorium with Mat Kearney.  This song comes from their EP called Sweet Tennessee. 

“Avalon” by Roxy Music

The title track from one of the best albums of all time.

“Kanga Roo” by Big Star

The shuffle is also on a Big Star kick…. there are reasons I love the shuffle… and this is a big one…

“Skilly Bom Billy Flop” by The Imperial Rooster

#E2TG favorites are on hiatus, but this song (and video from Couch by Couchwest) from their album Cluckaphony offers a good taste of what they do, and I hope to hear some new stuff from them in the future. 

“Pigeons Eating Glass” by Forebear

From the Inbox, comes L.A. Indie band Forebear with a song from their self-titled EP which was produced by Scott Gordon who has worked with Alanis Morissette and Ringo Starr among others.  Looking forward to checking out more of this EP.

“Clampdown” by The Clash

A great way to celebrate the successful completion of my Arctic trek….  More Clash from London Calling.

Lesley Gore passed away yesterday. I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve referenced her most famous song.

On to today’s shuffle:

1.  “We Sing Hallelujah”  by Richard and Linda Thompson

From I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight… Probably my favorite Richard and Linda Thompson album.  I love almost every song on it.  

2. “The Guns of Brixton” by The Clash

From London Calling…  Oh man, I love this song… such a great groove!

3. “Shit, Damn, Motherfucker” by D’Angelo

From Brown Sugar….  With D’Angelo getting so much attention from his long delayed third album, why not go back twenty years to his first album from 1995.  

4. “Holocaust” by Big Star

From Third/Sister Lovers…  Sister Lovers is such a devastatingly broken masterpiece and Holocaust is pretty the epitome of broken pop genius. 

5. “Don’t Matter to Me” by KaiL Baxley

From Heatstroke/The Wind and The War…  I have just now become acquainted with KaiL Baxley who is a California (by way of South Carolina) blues musician, and I like what I’ve heard so far – very much. 

6. “I’m a Fool to Want You” by Bob Dylan

From Shadows in the Night… When you are Bob Dylan, you can make an album of Frank Sinatra covers and people will eat it up…mainly because it is pretty darn awesome.

7. “Make It Alone” by Walter Egan

From Not Shy…  From the same album as his mega hit “Magnet and Steel”, Egan now resides in Franklin, TN. 

8. “Undertaken” by The Transcendents

From The Transcendents… My shuffle function loves this band, as do I.  I’m still digesting how to write about the music, but on Facebook, they list their genre as Noir, and that seems about as good as anything I can come up with. It’s like dark, murky folk music coming from distant place that you’ve been before.  That sentence is either pure genius or completely ridiculous… I haven’t decided yet, but I’m going to let it stand. 

9. “Inside Out” by Spoon

From They Want My Soul….  I can’t say that I’ve listened to as much Spoon as I could have, so I’m glad my friend included two songs on his annual mix CDs.

10. “I Don’t Need to Know” by Jeremy Gluck and Robert Coyne

From Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2…   I am really enjoying this album from Flickknife Records in the UK.  It’s a great sounding record.

I am emotionally wrung-out and physically feeling a bit under the weather, but we press onwards and upwards… but when your Monday morning commences with Temptation by an Elvis song from Get Happy!!,  you know that despite it all…

An instrumental from the self-titled debut by Chrissy Hynde and company. I guess it’s like their version of “Pac Man Fever” (I’m kidding relax!)

“For Your Eyes” by The Bell Hours

I grabbed this off Noisetrade… The Bell Hours are an indie-folk band from Denver, CO.  This is from their EP called Easy Weather.  I downloaded the EP last night, and so this was my first chance to listen to them.  I definitely want to hear more.

“The Candle and the Flame” by fIREHOSE

Ed Crawford, Mike Watt, and George Hurley from their 1986 debut album, Ragin’ Full On.  fIREHOSE in a mellow mood.

“Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)” by Father John Misty

In other bit of coincidental shuffle timing, we have a song off the forthcoming (due tomorrow) album by Joshua Tillman (called I Love You, Honeybear).  We heard the actual track, not the Midi version which was released for streaming by Father John.

“Kizza Me” by Big Star

One of my favorite tracks on one of my favorite albums – Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers.  This was taken from the Alex Chilton retrospective album called 19 years.

“Memory Deluxe” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

I was honored to receive the album  Memory Deluxe: I Knew Buffalo Bill 2, in my inbox via Flicknife Records. The British label released some classic music in the 1980s including albums by Hawkwind, Alien Sex Fiend, and the 1987 predecessor to this album, I Knew Buffalo Bill which featured Gluck along with an all-star band that featured members of Swell Maps, Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution plus the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce of Gun Club.  The label was resurrected in 2012, and this sequel album features Gluck and Robert Coyne who is the son of the late, lengendary British musician Kevin Coyne. 

“(Takin’ These) Blues to the Highway” by The Sky Kings

Another great sounding song from the very long anticipated album by the early 90s supergroup, The Sky Kings featuring Bill Lloyd (Foster and Lloyd), John Cowan (New Grass Revivial), Patrick Simmons (Doobie Brothers), and Rusty Young (Poco). The album called 1992 was released by Sony this past December.’

“Black and White World” by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

The only thing better than an Elvis song in the shuffle is two Elvis songs in the shuffle.

“Blue Turns Black” by Joe Nolan

The title track from the forthcoming remastered album by Nashville singer/songwriter/writer Joe Nolan.  Love it! 

“Female Mudwrestling” by Phranc

From Folksinger.  To be clear, Phranc does not like female mudwrestling.  Special note to Phranc, do not attempt to find a video for this song on You Tube – just saying.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Oh My and a Boo Hoo Mix

I got those post-birthday hangover blues… hangover in the figurative sense (or is it literal???)

Anyway, some killer tunes in the shuffle – so let’s get to it.

“You Got Trouble” by Blackfoot Gypsies

A great way to start the morning commute.  Six minutes or so of Blackfoot Gypsies signature high-energy bluesy rock music.  This is from their album Dandee Cheeseball.

“Come Join the Murder” by The White Buffalo and The Forest Rangers

Did you know that a group of crows is called a “murder” because they will sometimes kill a dying cow?  I didn’t either, but I join writers of songs, poetry, and fiction in thanking whoever came up with the name for the inspiration.  I really love this song which was featured on the television series Sons of Anarchy.

“1969” by The Stooges

I was three years old in 1969 (a fact that either makes me seem really old or really young depending upon your point of view), so I will have to take Iggy’s word on what that year was like. I am not one to argue with Iggy.  Powerhouse, proto-punk from the self-titled debut album.

“Femme Fatale” (Velvet Underground cover) by Tom Tom Club

Femme Fatale is among my favorite Velvet Underground songs (there are a bunch on that list), and this is one of my favorite cover versions. From Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom.

“Stop Your Sobbing” by The Pretenders

“V.F.W.” by The Dead Milkmen

I’ve never been in a foreign war, but I am a veteran in the sense that this song is talking about….

“Free Again” by Alex Chilton (Big Star)

A few songs from the Big Star album Third/Sister Lovers made it onto the Alex Chilton compilation 19 Years.  The absence of Chris Bell made the album (to some) essentially an Alex Chilton solo album. Regardless of that debate, it is one of my favorite albums of all time and I love this song.

“Dracula, 1931” by Sci-Fi Romance

I think this is the second to the last song for us to feature from the remarkable October album by our friend Vance Kotrla (aka Sci-Fi Romance).  Once again, in case you missed the previous posts, shortly before Halloween, Mr. Kotrla sat down and watched a marathon of classic horror films (along with the film Ed Wood), and he then wrote and recorded some songs based upon each of the films.  Here, he transforms the classic 1931 film Dracula (directed by Tod Browning and starring the great Bela Lugosi) into a meditation on the consequences of immortality.

“The Queen of My Arms” by Matthew Ryan

We close things out with a Bonus track from Matthew Ryan’s album Boxers. A great way to end a most excellent shuffle.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Move over Captain America Mix

I would like to preface today’s shuffle by saying that a big pet peeve of mine are people of a certain age who loudly decry “music these days” and who pine for some different era. They usually “prove” their point by referencing some trendy pop act of today and offer up for comparisons sake some legend of a different era who has stood the test of time.  It is not only the logic that is faulty, but such statements are a sign of laziness. There is a ton of great music being made “these days” – far more than even this music blogger than cover.  So my advise to those who would rant in the manner mentioned above is either 1. Seek out music – there are far more ways to do this than there ever were or 2. Shut up and admit that you are unwilling to do so and that you prefer the music of your younger days.

All that being said,  music has a special power to evoke… music which was an integral part of the formative years of our lives does hold a special place.  It is in that spirit that I offer up today’s shuffle which a total throwback to my days of yore.

Count me among the legions who truly discovered Big Star and Alex Chilton thanks to The Replacements. This song comes from an Alex Chilton compilation which gave me a crash course in all things Chilton. It was originally on the legendary album Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers.

“Bottle O’ Tears” by The Georgia Satellites

I know they are the Georgia Satellites, but I have always considered them a Nashville band.  I first heard “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” on WRVU several months before it became an international hit song, and I first read about the band in the legendary Metro magazine. This comes from the 1989 album In The Land of Salvation and Sin. I have always considered  that album an underrated classic or at least an under-heard classic.

“Shake That Thing” by The Georgia Satellites

Another great song from In the Land…. I think this song is about shaking something, but I’m not sure… Seriously, this is what Rock ‘n’ Roll is all about.

“Whoa!” by Soul Asylum

Soul Asylum released three albums in 1986.  This was the first. A glorious loud and fast punk inspired ode to joy called Made to Be Broken.


“Six Gallon Pie” by Meat Puppets

An instrumental from their 1989 album Forbidden Places – this was a few years before Kurt Cobain and Nirvana helped make the band household names.  I love this album, and it’s a good time to tell about the extremely hot and sweaty Meat Puppets’ show at 328 Performance Hall when the band took pity on the crowd of hot and sweat moshers and started handing out beers from the stage.  So, I can say that one of the Kirkwood brothers gave me a beer.  I know I’ve told this story many, many times, but if you give me a beer from the stage, I’ll tell the world about it, too. I’m easy that way.

We have a pair of songs from the debut album, Big Lizard in Your Backyard, by everyone’s favorite punk brats.  I guess I could always relate to The Dead Milkmen because I was a bit of a punk brat myself….

“Beach Song” by The Dead Milkmen

Who hates the beach?  The Dead Milkmen hate the beach!

“King of the Mountain” by Midnight Oil

From their 1990 album, Blue Sky Mining.  I’ve always loved this song.  The interesting twist of time and circumstance is that these days, I get to see Midnight Oil bassist Bones Hillman just about every Friday in East Nashville helping the hold down the bottom for Tim Carroll.

“Caped Crusader” by Phranc

A song about a comic book based upon the life of Pope John Paul II from Phranc’s solo debut album Folksinger (1985).  Phranc was previously a member of the band Catholic Discipline and the band appeared in the landmark film about the L.A. punk scene, The Decline of Western Civilization.

“King of Fools” by Social Distortion

The most recent release in today’s shuffle from the 1992 Social D album Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.  I dig just about every song on this album.

“Another Chance” by The Georgia Satellites

We shall close this shuffle with one of my favorite songs on In the Land of Salvation and Sin…. I think this song is a more elegant expression of the sentiment behind YOLO. 🙂

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Reflections Mix

A lot of ground to cover….  as promised, I added a virtual ton of music to the playlist – 196 songs in all bringing the total before today’s post of 471 songs – which I think is a record.

First off – you have to understand that Lou Reed tributes are not going to stop anytime soon.  His death seemed to affect people who make and listen to all kinds of music.  Today, we have a very special video offered as a tribute to Mr. Reed.  It’s a cover of the Velvet Underground classic (aren’t they all?) and one of my favorites (I know I say this about quite a few VU and Reed songs – but really I mean it) – “I’ll Be Your Mirror” here performed by Richard Barone with the amazing Jane Scarpantoni on Cello from the 25th  Anniversary concert for one of the most lovely records ever made (Cool Blue Halo).  Richard Barone (Bongos) is offering up the song as a tribute to his late friend and influence.

“Wilbur Mountain (2012)” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos). Darrin Bradbury was in Big Wilson River who we have featured before. Word has it he has upped and relocated from New Jersey to Nashville.  Nashville take notice!  I love the spoken/story/song featured here.  It makes me think of Gary Larson (The Far Side) meeting Larry McMurtry kind of… and in case you don’t know that would be a damn fine thing indeed.)

 
 
“Break it Up” by Grounded (from an untitled album released 10/31/2013.  Careful and dedicated listeners may remember that E2TG featured the young Florida band Grounded sometime last year. Well, they are back with some new music, and it’s a good reminder of why I was so impressed by this band.)
  

“Pawnshops” by Todd Farrell Jr. and the Dirty Birds (from All Our Heroes Live in Vans.  Todd Farrell is one of the brightest lights in a stunning bright Nashville music scene. Flat out great song here. This one also came out on Halloween.)

“Jesus Christ” by Big Star (from Third/Sister Lovers.  One of my favorites. Eef Barzelay, Bill Lloyd, Grimey and others did this song at a Record Store Day event at Grimey’s shortly after Alex Chilton passed away)

“Foxgloves” by Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons (from Old Believers.  I first saw Cory Chisel opening for Peter Case a few years ago, and I have been a fan every since.)

“Come a Little Closer” by Cage the Elephant (from Melophobia.  I think Cage the Elephant are simply one of the most exciting bands around. This is the first single from the band’s latest album.)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Such an Icy Feeling Mix

After a busy and pretty awesome weekend, I’m easing back into the a busy and pretty hectic week. 

We have a pretty cool mix of music today and I don’t want to waste any time….
