We have arrived at Thursday.  For the daily “theme” today, I decided upon the term, “Throwback Thursday”… honestly, I’m surprised no one has come up with this sooner…. I even came up with a hashtag (#tbt) for it.  Clever aren’t I?

I think the concept is pretty self-explanatory.  I hope to show that music in the past was extremely diverse and varied – in spite of what “Classic Rock” stations may lead you to believe….

From a 1989 radio concert recording. This track includes announcements of upcoming shows including one with the awesome Boston band Buffalo Tom.  It ends with a station identification.

“Directions” by Miles Davis

A thirteen minute live recording from a 1971 Newport Jazz Festival Europe performance. Taken from the album: Miles Davis at Newport 1955-1975: The Bootleg Series Vol. 4.

“Colors” by Minutemen

Clocking in at just over 2 minutes (rather lengthy for a Minutemen tune). This is from the band’s second full-length album, What Makes a Man Start Fires? and was compiled on the 1987 release Post-Mersh Vol. 1.

From Guitar Town – one of my favorite albums of all time.  A major part of my willingness to give “country music” a try.

Another tune from Made to Be Broken – the second studio album by Soul Asylum (the one with Humpty Dumpty on the cover).

NOTE:
There was a heavy 1980s vibe  (with the exceptions being the Miles Davis track and (just barely) the Pink Floyd song).   That will not always be the case for #tbt, but it may frequently be the case, just because that was the time when I first came of age musically.

Went out for the first time since Americana last week. Visited Twin Kegs II which is located just 4 minutes from where I live. I don’t know what I had never been there before. Neat place.  Saw some great songwriters including the brother of someone from the show Nashville, and a tremendous young writer from Sydney who was celebrating the release of her new album, Love and Lovely Lies . Her name is Imogen Clark. 

We have another fine shuffle with some of those odd connections that seems to happen all the time when you closely follow music and the people who make it.

“The People’s History” by Eleventh Dream Day

This Chicago band have been making music for over 30 years.  Their late 80s/early 90s albums Beet and Lived to Tell were among by favorites back in the day. I somehow lost track of them, but I was happy to discover that they have continued to make music and that I have a lot of catching up to do.  They just recently released Works for Tomorrow, and this is our first listen to that record.  And man does it rock!  I was immediately reminded why I loved this band so much.

“President Clinton Blues” by Drink Small

The second day in a row for some Piedmont Blues.  Klout is going to name me an “Expert” of Piedmont Blues any day.  This is definitely politically incorrect, and pretty damn funny.

“Nothing Else” by Livingmore

Ok two notes here.  This song has been in the playlist for a heck of a long time. It is the first track from the 3 song self-titled release by this L.A. duo.  Livingmore is Alex Moore and Spencer Livingston.  Spencer used to be in a band called The Alternates, and that band was one of the very first Ear to the Ground Band’s of the Week (a long since abandoned feature from our very early time) – we are talking mid 2011.  Livingmore is making some awesome music and they seem to be playing out in L.A. fairly often.  Hopefully we can talk them into making a trek east at some point.

“That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” by The Smiths

“Come Together” by Michael Hedges

The amazing, late great guitar genius – takes on the iconic Beatles song from his album Live on the Double Planet.

“If It Takes a Lifetime” by Jason Isbell

The Nashville based  songwriter has been a roll for the past year of so. This is the opening number from the his latest critically acclaimed album.  BONUS VIDEO: a cover of this song by my friend Drew Kohl…

“Filet of Sole” by The Dead Milkmen

In the strange coincidences very few people will get – The Dead Milkmen once wrote and recorded the line, “You’ll dance to anything, by the Smiths”… happy dancing…

“Too Many Bridges to Cross Over” by Jesse and Noah

From the EP Brethren.  Jesse and Noah Bellamy with (if I am not mistaken in my hasty research) a cover of a song written by Dallas Frazier which Merle Haggard included on his classic album Mama Tried.

“Love Letters” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Jonquil Child, the album from which this song is taken, is due out tomorrow (July 7).  I seriously and sincerely recommend that you get this album when you can.  I’ve been listening for a while, and I love it.  Tiffany Huggins Grant is an absolutely amazing vocalist.

“Kid” by KATO (ft. Joanie Payne)

Kato is a rapper/hip-hop artist from L.A.  This is from an EP called Summer in Space Beach.

“Barbarism Begins at Home” by The Smiths

Nearly seven minutes of The Smiths from Meat is Murder.

“Rainbow Sign” by The Buckstankle Boys

Daphne Willis was one of the brightest lights at the Safety Harbor Songfest, I attended earlier this year.  She is from Nashville by way of Chicago.  This uplifting song was the lead track from her 2008 album Matter of Time.

“Knock ’em Dead” by Rhubarb Whiskey

Rhubarb Whiskey are a band from Oakland, CA.  They play a particularly potent blend of roots, punk, and American gothic music.  This song is from their 2013 album, Same Sad End.

“Wrong ’em Boyo” by The Clash

Two songs with “’em” in the title in a  row. From London Calling, this is a cover of a song originally recorded by the British Ska band, The Rulers.   

“Leavings” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

Due to not feeling well, I missed what I am sure was a great performance by Lori Kelley at The Building in East Nashville, but I am fortunate enough to have seen her play and hopefully to see her play again soon.  I also had the great good fortune to see a rare Nashville appearance of Lori with her long-time D.C. area partner Cletus Kennelly.  I got hold of their album, Lotus, and I have really been digging the music.

“Kara Takes Drugs” by The Ghoul Goes West

Our final track from the album, Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things from our favorite band of misfits from the Northwest part of Arkansas.

Seriously, I don’t really do top ten lists of anything, but if I was one to do those, this would be an excellent early mid year candidate for my list of best albums of 2015.  Just saying.

“Train” by Jeremiah Tall

If I had a top ten list of music, I “discovered” in 2015, Jeremiah Tall would be on that list.  Thanks to Noisetrade for “introducing” me to his music.  Were those “quotation marks” really necessary?  I’m not “sure”…

“Kill the Messenger” by John Wesley Harding

The opening track to the 1992 album, Why We Fight…  hearing the opening notes of this song feels me with the same level of excitement as it did 23 or so years ago.  A great record, a great song.

“Cast in Faith” by Storm Chronicles

Storm Chronicles are from Seattle.  This song is from their 2013 debut album, Looking Backward.  I am grateful that I can still discover new music directly from artists reaching out.  I get music from a variety of sources, and the volume of submissions has increased which makes it difficult to hear everything that is sent my way (a wonderful problem to have), but I hope I never stop discovering music this way.

“Released” by Ricky Mirage

And sometimes, I discover music just by someone I know and respect posting something on social media…  I know next to nothing about Ricky Mirage except that it is non de plume of Nick Harris about which I know equally little except that a friend I respect said the music was rad, and I checked it out, and it was rad.

A modest proposal to deal with the problem of people talking during music performances: Just let John Moreland play.  I saw John Moreland play twice last night. The first was at Music City Roots where he wowed an audience mostly unfamiliar with his music.  Later, he played a full headlining set at The 5 Spot in East Nashville in front of a packed house.  The minute John Moreland began to play, the crowd (a bar crowd after 11:00pm) fell silent almost immediately.  A friend of mine asked what it was about his music that had that effect.  In the moment, the only words that came to me were the emotional vulnerability of his songs.  I don’t know if that is the answer.  But, it got me thinking about vulnerability, and how our society sees it as a weakness, but how in the hands of someone like John Moreland – it can be such a powerful thing.

“Heima” by Hildur Gudnadottir

Hildur Gudnadottir is a cellist and composer currently based out of Berlin.  This stunning composition comes from a Noisetrade Sampler from the recent Big Ears Festival which took place in Knoxville, Tennessee.  Quite an impressive line-up at that festival.

“Buddy” by The Western Shore

One of my favorite songs from the Thunderstorm album.  I saw The Western Shore Monday night, and they are preparing to hit the road for a short tour which includes a couple of West Coast dates with Nikki Lane.

“Breathe” by Maria McKee

Another track from Maria McKee’s self-titled debut solo album.  McKee was named among the “Top 10 Female Artists You Really Should Know” in a recent article – she was included with other great artists like Kate Bush, Alison Moyet, and Nina Hagen among others. Well deserved.

“Revelation (The Final Book)” by Jeremiah Tall

In a short time, I’ve come to really dig this guy’s music.  It’s available on Noisetrade, you should really check it out.  (Free – but donate if you can, and definitely share to spread the word).

“Tying Ten Knots in the Devil’s Tail” by Townes Van Zandt

A classic western poem/song performed by the legendary Townes Van Zandt from a 1973 live recording.

“The Difference” by Dan Coyle

From Perfect Word, Perfect Beat comes this song with a great doo-wop sound. 

“Sharp Feathers” by Telepathic Teddy Bear

From the album Forgiveness…  Telepathic Teddy Bear writes great songs and produces great sounding records. 

“Don’t Make Nothin’ in the USA” by Tim Carroll

The lead track and one of my favorite songs on the new Tim Carroll album, Pure As Coal.  A ton of my East Nashville friends are featured in the video including Kalee Smyth from The Western Shore who we heard from earlier in the shuffle.  I was at The 5 Spot when the live performance portions of the video were recorded. 

“Napoleon” by Scott Miller

Scott Miller was one of the performers at Music City Roots last night, and he was fantastic.  He was previously a member of the seminal Knoxville band The V-Roys.  This song comes from a compilation album called Bubbapalooza Vol. 1: Chronicle of the Redneck Underground – which also included Southern Culture on the Skids and others. 

“Plight of Imemine” by Broken Guru

Broken Guru are an Alternative Rock band from New York City. Their debut album, Bent Up Halo is scheduled to be released on April 28.  You can currently stream five of the songs from that album on their Bandcamp page.

“I Want the One I Can’t Have” by The Smiths

We close out today’s shuffle with a track from The Smiths’ second album, Meat is Murder.  Any shuffle that includes The Smiths and Townes Van Zandt can’t be bad…

2.  Crows by Shelly Colvin from Up the Hickory Down the Pine (2012)
Another great song from a former featured artist on E2TG.  We were fortunate to be able to attend the album release party for this record.

 3.  Dialtone by BELL from DIAMONITE (2011)

Brooklyn based Olga Bell heads up this electro-pop band.  An extended single with a few remixes of this song was released in June 2012.

From the California punk band’s self-titled debut album…

5.   Paint a Vulgar Picture (Demo) by The Smith from Unreleased Demos and Instrumentals (Bootleg Vinyl Rip) (2010)
 Final version of song appeared on The Smith’s final album, Strangeways, Here We Come.  
6.  East Nashville Skyline by Todd Snider from What the Folk (2005)
Not on his 2004 album of the same name.  Does appear on his 2007 Rarities compilation called Peace, Love and Anarchy.  Name drops some East Nashville haunts from days gone by – also Phoenix Radio.
7.  Ain’t Dumbo by Night Beats from Trouble in Mind’s Stax-O-Trax! (2012)
Originally released on the band’s 2011 eponymous release. Seattle based Garage, Psychedelic, Soul band.

8.  The Way It Never Was by Kim Richey from Glimmer (1999)
A recent Goodwill score.  Kim Richey is an amazingly talented singer-songwriter. Her last album was called Wreck Your Wheels and was released in 2010.  Word is we may see some new music in 2013, and I, for one, cannot wait.  This song is about guaranteed to get into her head and stay… you won’t complain.
 
 

9. Younger Us by Japandroids from Cruel Summer: Stereogum Summer Jams 2010 Vol. 1 (2010)

Originally released as a single in July 2010 b/w a cover of X’s Sex and Dying in High Society.  Later released on the band’s 2012 album Celebration Rock. This duo from Vancouver does the modern alternative rock thing pretty darn well.

  10. Heavy Soup (Outro) by Cornershop from Handcream for a Generation (2002)

Groove heavy instrumental from this English band’s fourth album.  This record has become one my favorites.

11. Saturday’s Child by Steve Almaas from Trailer Songs (2012)
ex-Suicide Commando and Beat Rodeo front man released this fresh sounding album last year. Fans of Beat Rodeo will recognize the bright pop vocals and the mildly countryish twang of the music.  I know I’ve had this song in my shuffle before, and hopefully more of the record will show up soon, but I don’t mind hearing it again.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – O, Brother Mix
