#E2TG is not at SXSW (This is a CXCW plug by the way)

If, like me, you are not at the South by Southwest confab (conflag?) (whatever), you probably have some good reasons.  Can’t get off work, lack of funds, the beer is too expensive, too many damn hipsters, it involves putting on shoes — the list goes on.

For the last four years, there has been a great alternative to SXSW.  I hope by now, you are familiar with Couch by Couchwest -where the beer is cheap and the only hipster is you.  CXCW is an on-line music festival featuring a staggering number and variety of talented folks who submitted specially made videos specifically for the festival. Often, the videos feature couches. Often they don’t. They may be filmed in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, on front or back porches, or in wide-open fields.  Jonny Fritz when he still went by Jonny Corndawg recorded one from the inside of a drainage pipe.

Among the most buzz-worthy moments so far has been Jamie Painter’s cover of Jason Isbell’s Cover Me Up which has earned a recommendation from Mr. Isbell himself.  Oh and Two Mule Blues set shit on fire. 

So, in conclusion, I get why you’re not at South by Southwest. I’m not there with you, but why the heck aren’t you at Couch by Couchwest?  Shoes are optional and probably not encouraged.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Pt. One

It’s here… time to begin our look back at the year which was 2013.  In true E2TG style, for the remainder of 2013 we will shuffling up a special playlist which includes some of our favorite songs from the past year.  I’ll let the song speak for themselves, but we will be highlighting some of our favorite E2TG related albums of the year as we move along.

About Band of the Year.  After two successful Band of the Year polls (by page view numbers, Band of the Year and Band of the Month polls dominate our statistics page for most viewed), so it is only after careful consideration that I’ve decided to forgo the Band of the Year poll for 2013.  Basically, it comes down to the fact that I would rather see independent bands cooperating and collaborating than competing.  We had some memorably good fun with some of our polls – especially the first annual Band of the Year poll and the legendary February 2012 Band of the Month poll that came down to a dogfight between MAKAR and The End Men.  As time went by, and I began featuring more and more bands, the idea no longer seemed to be in the spirit of this site.  

I will be naming the third annual Band of the Year within the next couple of weeks.  Meanwhile, enjoy yourself as we relive this year that almost was.  If you feel so inclined, share some of these posts with your friends near and far.


Before we jump into the first of our Favorites’ shuffles for 2013, I need to rectify something….


#E2TG Hall of Fame (Notable Omissions):

More names will be added to the Hall of Fame in early 2014 – and my progress on the completion of the Hall of Fame page has hit some unexpected delays, but I’ve became increasingly uncomfortable knowing that two of my favorite E2TG artists have not been added to the Hall as of yet. 

1.  Ubiquity Machine/Howard Rabach  – In using the tagging feature to determine our Hall of Fame, one thing I failed to take into account were the many fine bands/artists you came to prominence in the months when E2TG was still housed on the now defunct Posterous site.  Howard Rabach was one of the first readers of the blog to step out of the shadows.  His band, Ubiquity Machine, was one of our early Bands of the Week. The band finished second in our first annual Band of the Year poll, and he has remained a good friend of Ear to the Ground ever since.  UM has been kind of dormant of late, as Howard has been doing some freelance stuff.  Check out his Facebook page here. So it is with great pleasure, that I usher in UM/HR to a spot of honor in our Hall of Fame.




2. The Grimm Generation – Another thing I failed to take into account in my tagging system of Hall of Fame eligibility is the variant tagging which sometimes occurs. Blogger places a 200 character limit on tagging so sometimes I have to shorten band names – like leaving the “The” off.  That is the only explanation I have for The Grimm Generation not being in our top 20 tagged artists. Still this unique and frankly awesome collective from Connecticut (headed up by the amazing Jason Krug and Carmen Champagne), are well deserving of a prime spot in our Hall of Fame.  Hell their latest album, The Big Fame even has “fame” in the title. They have consistently made music which I love and which seems timeless in its wonderfulness.

Highlights:  Of note, in our first shuffle of the year end playlist, we have a couple of talented female artists from the Northeast who came my way directly or indirectly via the visionary music guru Popatunes.  Jeanette Lynne is from Philly and Nikki Sue is from New Jersey.  They both write great songs that fall into the Americana/Countryish/Folk-like genres (if you are into genres).  The important thing is that make great music and they both had releases which were among my favorites for 2013. 

Dog Without Warning hail from the greater bay area of California.  They came to my attention via CXCW and I featured some music off their indie flavored concept? album Go Girl.  The follow up was released as an EP earlier this year, and it was a revelation. Bark uses acoustic arrangements which serve to highlight the songwriting skills and humor of this band.  Bark quickly moved into my favorites category and has stayed there as the year has progressed.

We recently featured the Its Teeth track which features Gabriel from The Gabriel Construct as well as the Jonny Fritz track from the fantastic Dad Country album.

Boston area Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Bleu is a Berklee trained musician who has written pop songs for the likes of The Jonas Brother, Demi Lovato, Hanson, and Selena Gomez.  He’s also made a string of excellent Indie albums of his own.  Today’s track goes back ten years to his major label debut.

The pioneering Alt-Country band Blue Mountain just broke up at the end of June of this year. They formed in 1993 and returned in 2007 after a six year hiatus.  Rainy Day could only have been more perfect if it had been raining today.

Our third song of the day from this North Carolina band who are getting ready to release their new album later this month.  This one comes from their previous studio full-length.  The song is about the sweetest, cutest song I’ve heard in a long time.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Dream-like Waiting Mix

No “Shuffle” because I got a ride from the car dealership to my office, but we did have a “Pre-Shuffle” which I guess makes the “Pre-Shuffle” just a “Shuffle”… or maybe I’m over-thinking… again.

 Legendary Los Angeles band X announced this morning that they are going on tour with legendary New York band Blondie.  The tour includes a stop at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville…   I wonder if my Facebook “friendship” with DJ Bonebrake will help me score tickets?  

Today’s Shuffle includes a delightful mix of Pop and Punk but no necessarily Pop-Punk plus some that may or may not be considered Pop or Punk, but I’ll leave that for you to decide.

The (Pre?) Shuffles commences in THREE, TWO, ONE… JUMP!

 Old World Romance is the name of the latest album from L.A. Indie Folk band Sea Wolf, however, our first song of today’s mix “Old World Romance” by Sea Wolf is not found on that album. Rather it is available on a sampler with Outtakes via Noisetrade.com.

 

This gorgeous melody was a great start to the day, and the loveliness continued with the second song.

“To Dust” is from the Always This album by Joshua Worden.  We’ve been playing the hell out of this smooth soulful album.  “To Dust” highlights Worden sound nicely.


 

After a couple of beautiful smooth songs, I was ready for a change of pace. Fortunately, my good friend (the Shuffle mode) was ready with a track from the Ramone’s self-titled album. “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” is one of the slower songs on that record and a nifty slice of classic Rock ‘n’ Roll.

 

Toronto-based, Dublin-born Frank Ryan delivers some serious smack with the title track from his latest release, “Dirty Little Liar” – a very good funky rock track.
We head back into our Ramones collection but jump ahead about a decade with the title track from the band’s ninth studio album, “Animal Boy” which was released in 1986.  The song is 1:50 of hyped-up and harder edged punk. Time is funny because where as now-a-days ten years doesn’t seem so long ago, at the time, it seemed as if the Ramones had been around forever.

 

We first caught up with the Indie Pop band Canopy Climbers who are from three different cities in Tennessee and Arkansas (based upon my interpretation of their Facebook Page), when we downloaded the song, “Stuck” off of the Brite Revolution site. This past weekend, we downloaded a Noisetrade Sampler from the band’s then forthcoming album Miles.  The band caught up with me and was generous enough to offer up an advanced copy of the whole album.  Well, we can report a couple of things.  This is a strong album with some very good songs, and Miles is no longer forthcoming as of today.  We heard the title track which serves as a good way to introduce the brand, spanking new album to you.

 

The E2TG pendulum swings back in the Punk Rock direction with our next song, “Hooray for Me” is from the eighth studio album by LA punk rock band Bad Religion. Released in 1994, Stranger Than Fiction proved to be a break-through for the band.

 
 We close out this singular Shuffle of the day with some emotional Philly Country music. “Bittersweet” is on the recent album by Couch by Couchwest alum, Jeanette Lynne called You’ve Got Me.  A delightful change of pace and a great way to close out this shuffle.

Kalyn the MC/Producer of Wheelchair Sports camp is 26 years old, 3 foot 6 inches tall and weighs 53 pounds. She has osteogenesis imperfecta a brittle bone condition. She also delivers some kick-ass lyrical explosions and with the rest of the band deliver some vicious beats.

Nashville’s Kopecky Family Band have been making music together since 2007.  Their latest album (linked above) Kids Raising Kids is getting some serious National attention, but here in Nashville, we’ve been paying attention for a while now.  I absolutely love this sort of Title track from the band’s 2010 album.

This beautiful song may well be my favorite from this album (which I like a whole lot).  Jeanette Lynne is from Philly, she had a great and unique voice and an amazing songwriting ability.  Please, please, please check out her album.

Our second listen to Sea Wolf today. I think this may be my favorite of the two tracks.

This one comes via fellow blogger, madman, genius and reigning Mayor of Couch by Couchwest – David “Popatunes” Horton.  Ms. Lynne, as I understand it, went to school with David’s sons which got me to thinking about all the amazingly talented musical artists who’ve passed tangentially through my life – children of friends, friends of my children etc. Which I suppose it all part of the philosophy of Ear to the Ground – keep listening and you will be amazed at what comes your way.

Look, I honestly can’t say that I’ve ever been a huge Joe Bonamassa fan. It’s not that I don’t like his music so much as I’ve never really listened to it. That being said, I love this song and I love everything else I’ve heard so far from this album. This sounds amazing – not a surprise given the historic setting and the reputation Mr. Bonamassa has as a musician.

You’ve seen several tracks from this new record featured of late. I’m rather enjoying this album – perhaps even more so than I did the band’s previous album The Adventures of Hi-Fi in Space which I also liked.

It occurred to me that several of the songs in the mix today are from 2013 releases, and that in just four months and a week, this year has produced some amazing music. And, there is much more to come, as we await new music from Nikki Sue and the Bad News among others.

Some may say, I take way too much pride in presenting morning shuffles that span such a diverse landscape of musical marvels.  Some may say I would be far more successful if I focused on one genre or only wrote about those certain “buzz worthy” artists that you can read about in all of the other music blogs. Some may say, I should stick to the script and just echo back the language of the music promoters and publicists. 

I don’t bother responding except to offer up today’s pre-shuffle and shuffle.

Okay, okay… like me, my shuffle button is in love with this young hip-hop artist currently from Wisconsin. Check it out, if you haven’t already.

I’ve often said that once of the best things about writing Ear to the Ground are the incredible people I have met and “met” as a result of the blog. Some time last year, I heard this awesome track called “Frank Ocean” by a group called Valued Customer. I dug it and I even Featured them on Ear to the Ground.  These young guys are completely nuts, and I’ll be honest about half the time, I don’t understand exactly what’s going on with them, but mostly, I am completely charmed by their awesome weirdness (which goodness knows I can appreciate). We are finally about to get some new music from Valued Customer, but I couldn’t wait. So, I headed over to their Bandcamp page and downloaded some older music.  The song “Bangs” was in the Pre-shuffle.  For the shuffle, the following track came up….
  • “WELCOME” by Valued Customer from Babylon Hill (2012)
Okay – so what we have here is the opening track of the Babylon Hill collection. We have a guided meditation with a warning not to listen while driving.  I’m not sure but I think I’ve been brain-washed into really digging these guys.

  • “Somebody Else” by JJ Grey and Mofro from This River (2013)

 

What better way to close out this uniquely Ear to the Groundish Mix of music than with some smooth modern blues from the new album by the long-running Florida band JJ Grey and Mofro.
