We have a rather interesting mix of music today – so let’s jump to it….

“Shock the Monkey” (Peter Gabriel cover) by Don Ho from When Pigs Fly: Songs You Never Thought You’d Hear (2002)

I’m not much I can say about legendary Hawaiian singer, the late Don Ho – covering Peter Gabriel’s 1982 hit song from his fourth album. Except, I will say, I kind of liked it.

“East Virginia” by Damian Jurado from Gathered in Song (2006/2007)

I make no secret of the fact that I am a big Damien Jurado fan. I actually first came across his music by accident – in a way. This song is gorgeous and subtle and well… just great.

“Cryin’ Like A Fool” by Jerry McCain from Rock ‘n’ Roll Ball (1997)

We close out with a track from early rock/blue legend Jerry McCain – he’s cryin’ like a fool… no really!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Out of Kindness Mix

We have a pretty interesting mix of music today. Any time a week begins with a Townes Van Zandt song, it a great sign.

Let’s jump right into it….

Pre-Shuffle:

“Pancho and Lefty” (live version) by Townes Van Zandt. (I love this song, and this is a crystal clear and beautiful live version from a 1973 show in Houston, Texas)

“Anniversary” by Susan James (from Driving Toward the Sun – one of my favorite albums of the year)

“I Hear You Knockin'” by Lazy Lester (A blues legend with a legendary story)

“Brooklyn Girls” by DD Dagger (An Austin-based indie artist. E2TG friend Rob Porta (Raindogg) worked on the latest DD Dagger video. This song is about those girls from particular borough of NYC)

“U-Haul in the Driveway” by Susan James (also from Driving Toward the Sun – btw, the two videos included in today’s PLAYLIST are from two separate CD Release shows – one for this album, the other for the predecessor – DJ Bonebrake of X fame appears prominently in the older video)

“In New York City” by Brad Jones (Nashville singer/songwriter sings about the greatest city in the world).

“I Can Live Forever If I Slowly Die” by Chris Schlarb from Psychic Temple (2010)

A nine plus minute jazz oriented instrumental – remarkable and mind expanding. Schlarb released Psychic Temple II this year – the new album features new takes on songs by Brian Wilson, Frank Zappa, and Joe Jackson

“Ponzi Scheme” by Eric Brace and Peter Cooper from The Comeback Album (2013)

A pair of amazing singer/songwriters who help make the case for East Nashville being the coolest place on earth. (‘though I’m proud to rep for South Nashville!)

“Emotion as Weapon” by Telepathic Teddy Bear from Reactions (2011)

I’ve said it before (or something similar), if you are going to make music under the name Telepathic Teddy Bear – you’d better make it awesome. Forget the name, this is some really cool music. Don’t forget the name – Telepathic Teddy Bear.

“Rain On” by The Blind Owl Band (new music on old-style instruments from NY)

“Daughters of Ursa Major” by Chris Schlarb (At almost the same time I discovered this music, they were playing a show here in Nashville – at the Stone Fox… bad timing, but good music. I hope they come back soon.)

“Supersoaker” by Kings of Leon (Nashville’s homegrown arena alt-rock stars are back with some eagerly anticipated new music)

“Make the Music Go Bang” by X from More Fun in the New World (1983)

As I was coming of age, musically speaking, my good friend, Rex Silo published a review of this album in our exceptional high school newspaper, The Charger. I fell in love with this record just based upon his review, and when I finally heard it, I was hooked totally. X are back on tour this summer and fall with B-52s for some dates and with Blondie for others. You can hear the infant sounds of Americana, Alt-Country etc. being birthed this album as punk, rockabilly met some of the most amazing songwriting of this or any other era. Still one of my all-time favorite albums.

“Someone Like You” (Adele Cover) by Valued Customer from “Fun Covers”

In anticipation of the release of Kalpa (widgeted above), I downloaded some older VC stuff, and I’m glad I did, because it looks like they have removed their older material from their Bandcamp Page. So – as we’ve said and said again, check out Kalpa. The song today is from a nifty little covers album which features deconstructions of some (at the time of recording) current pop hits as well as a classic soul song.
