We are back after taking yesterday off to celebrate Labor Day here in the U.S.   I have seen 8 different live performances since my last post.

Sunday night at Foobar, I saw Ryan Dishen, Sioux City Kid, Adrian and Meredith Krygowski, and then long time #E2TG favorites Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (full band).  I saw Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray back in July as a duo where they really stripped their songs down, and that was a fun show.  Here the band was tight and they blew the roof off the place.

Last night, I headed out to The East Room for a show that featured three Nashville acts and one band from New York.  Toot Sweet from NYC opened the show. We featured them on Ear to the Ground before. They are part of the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen collective, and thus became the first MCFK band that I have seen live. They were remarkable. Highly distinctive and original sound rooted in interesting older music in a style they call Cabaret Soul.  My good friends, Western Shore were next, and they delivered like they always do with their unique brand of Americana music.  The Wooly Mama’s were next and delivered a high energy performance that was a lot of fun. The headliners were The Lonely Bastards who were celebrating and giving away copies of their new vinyl single.  I had seen them some time ago, and I remember that I enjoyed them, but it was good to be reminded of what I liked.

Tonight, Megan Palmer, Amy Speace, Tim Easton, and 2014 E2TG Artist of the Year, Darrin Bradbury are doing a round at the legendary Bluebird Café.  It will be Darrin’s debut at the Bluebird, and is either a sign that Nashville is changing or else it is some other kind of sign…  either way, I am so proud of him.

Today’s shuffle as well as the recent live performances I have seen have been further evidence that there is so much great much out in the world right now. The old music business may or may not be dying, and yes it is hard for band’s to make money, and yet, every day, I discover and rediscover people who continue to make highly music and then put it out into the world.

“Meteoright” by Futurisk

Another track from the awesome 13 O’clock compilation put out by PPNW Records.  Futurisk were an early 80s synth punk, new wave band from Florida.  They are getting some latter day reissue treatment.

“Independence Day” by Discount Ravioli

From what I have gathered, the Discount Ravioli album, Robin Schultz and the 21 Prayers, was mostly recorded in a tent in the early hours of the morning of July 5. Independence Day is not to be mistaken for the Will Smith Sci-Fi Action flick of the same name, however, if you really want to mistake this song for that movie, then who am I to harsh your buzz.

“Check the Setlist” by Tom Schreck

Nashville songwriter/Outsider from his album Save Your Glory.  Rumor has it, Schreck is finishing up an EP called Added Glory. (Actually he posted about it on Facebook, but it is more fun to call it a rumor).

“Dead Men’s Garden Part II” by Bashful Hips

Another track from Too Old for a Coming of Age Story. So good…

“This Lonely Road” by Brian Carpenter and the Confessions

Another cool track from The Far End of the World which is due out in early October.

“Night Still Comes” by Neko Case

Last week we had Neko Case as part of the band The New Pornographers. Here she is solo from her 2013 album The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, the more I Love you.

“Here She Comes Now” by The Velvet Underground

Another gem from White Light/White Heat.

“St. Roch Blues” by Hurray for the Riff Raff

A glorious song from New Orleans band, Hurray for the Riff Raff.

“Can’t Back Out” (acoustic) by The Silent War

The Silent War is the relatively new duo that features singer songwriter Garrison Starr and Adrianne Gonzalez. This came from a Noisetrade sampler.

Be sure to check out my review of Drew Kohl’s new EP, Sweetheart.

When I hit shuffle this morning, there were 985 songs in my active playlist. Based upon statistical averages, the number of combinations for the first 10 songs to come up in a random shuffle of those songs, is… well, I don’t know, but it’s probably a pretty big number.  And yet, on any given shuffle, only one combination actually did come up, and here it is…

The recently reformed Memphis/Nashville band with a song from their self-titled album from back in the day.

“Everything Blue” by Kansas Bible Company

Nashville via Goshen, IN horn-based rock and roll 12-piece with a song from their Dad’s Day EP.

“Sugah Daddy” by D’Angelo and The Vanguard

From the album Black Messiah… D’Angelo always makes my shuffles better.

“I Missed the Point” by Neko Case

From her third album, Black Listed…

“Out the Door” by Hoodoo Gurus

From Blow Your Cool!  I don’t listen to Hoodoo Gurus as much as I used to, but every time I do listen, I am reminded again why they are one of my all-time favorite bands.

“I’ve Wasted My Time Getting Wasted” by Reckless Johnny Wales

Reckless Johnny Wales had probably forgotten more about Nashville music than most people ever knew.  He is larger than life – and in a previously incarnation he was a Music Row Executive who is a CMA Founding President’s award winner and who discovered and signed Faith Hill. In retirement, he reinvented him self as a folk/roots legend. Reckless Johnny has a new album coming out soon, and this is the first taste of it, but it definitely will not be the last.  Having met Reckless Johnny and heard some of his stories, I tend to believe that he writes from experience.

“No One’s Home” by  Gear Daddies

The Gear Daddies capture a period in my life almost as if they were watching me… I remember – in the days before cell phones and constant internet connections – being lonely and filled with ennui as only a young twenty-something can be… and choosing to combat my loneliness by unplugging my phone to further isolate myself from the world. It made sense at the time. Anyway, this song brings me back to those days.

“Handsome” by The Vaccines

For some reason, I always think The Vaccines are an old band from like the 70s or something. I don’t know why and it’s not really relevant. Anyway, I always like a shot of rock and roll added into my shuffles.  Handsome is the lead single from the brand new album by The Vaccines  which is titled English Graffiti. I like the song quite a bit.

“Where I Lead Me” by Townes Van Zandt

Taken from a 1973 live recording which I downloaded on the late singer-songwriter’s birthday.  This is a song from Van Zandt’s 1971 fourth album, Delta Momma Blues.

“The One I’m Still Thinking About” by Darrell Scott

We close things out today with a song written by the late Ben Bullington.  Darrell Scott’s latest album ’10’ features the songs of Bullington who was a country doctor and a songwriter who passed away from cancer a couple of years ago.  I was fortunate enough to attend a CD Release party which featured an all-star cast and which was a celebration of songs – Ben Bullington’s songs and the songs of the various performers – all songs Bullington would have loved.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Loot in the Boot Mix

Hey ho! It’s Wednesday.  We have a pretty fun shuffle today – 11 songs strong with some real curveballs and some real treats.  Scroll down or click through for the music:

“Where Was Baby Jesus Born?” by Annie Sellick from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory

From Sellick’s 2013 jazzy Christmas album which we featured heavily last year comes this soulful number.

“Surrounded” by Dan Coyle from Perfect Word. Perfect Beat.

Another great song from Dan Coyle’s awesome newish album.  Please check him out if you haven’t done so yet – you won’t be disappointed.

“The Body Snatcher, 1945” by Sci-Fi Romance from October

Yeah, Yeah… it’s December not October.  Time for Christmas tunes not Halloween/Horror-based songs… but seriously folks great music has no season.  I dig this whole album.  This song is based upon the 1945 film based upon a Robert Louis Stevenson short story and produced and adapted for the screen by the legendary Val Lewton. Val Lewton is notable for his work with RKO pictures where he was given lurid titles and a low budget and managed to make some truly remarkable films – like I Walked with a Zombie.  In the hands of E2TG favorite and CXCW alum Vance Kotrla aka Sci-Fi Romance, the film is reimagined as a damn fine song.

“East Nashville” by Sammy Brue from Bootleg Sessions VOL I

Sammy Brue appears on the cover of Justin Townes Earle’s latest album as a younger doppelganger of JTE.  He also happens to be a very talented young singer/songwriter in his own right.  He is from Salt Lake City, Utah, but his Nashville connection is strong – the album cover previously mentioned was photographed in Fannie Mae Dees Park in Nashville – popularly known as Dragon Park. And the song we feature today is named for one of my current favorite parts of the city.

“Pedestrians” by The Slaughterhouse Chorus from The Entrée – A Built4BBQ Sampler/Download Single

The Slaughterhouse Chorus are from Albany, NY.  They play a rocking mix of Americana and Punk.  I had the opportunity to see them live in 2013 when they did a tour with The End Men.  This song is from the Built4BBQ sampler, and The Slaughterhouse Chorus are a major driving force behind this awesome collective.

“3-9-4” by Lemonheads from Hate Your Friends

Taking things all the way back to 1987 and the debut album by Boston punk band, The Lemonheads.  Recommended if you only know It’s Ashame about Ray and the Mrs. Robinson cover…

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” (Tom Waits cover) by Neko Case from New Coat of Paint – Waits Tribute

In what could be a first (but who’s counting?), a day after featuring the Tom Wait’s original, we have this awesome cover version by Neko Case.  It’s been a good week for Tom Waits and Tom Waits’ covers.

“Put the Loot in the Boot” by Mae West from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Sampler/Wild Christmas

The year I was born, Mae West – the Hollywood actress best know for her provocative roles in films of the 30s and 40s, made a Rock and Roll Christmas album (7 Christmas songs and one Beatles’ cover). I feel like this completes some unspecified step in our quest to cover every conceivable form of music.

“Tortured Birds” by Ron Muga from Wonderful Doom

Another great song from this New York Singer/Songwriter.  Ron Muga’s music can be found on Bandcamp. Check him out.

“Let Me Hang Your Stockings In Your Christmas Tree” by Roosevelt Sykes from Lit Up Like a Christmas Tree – A Vintage Holiday Sampler

A suggestive and absolutely fun Holiday number from Blues/Boogie Woogie piano legend Roosevelt Sykes.

“So Lonesome I Could Fly” by Marti Jones from My Tidy Doily Dream

We close things out with simply a beautiful song by one of my all time favorite singer/songwriters.  This is from her 2002 album.  I have to give a shout out/mention to the event which inspired me to add this to my playlist at this time…  If you are in the vicinity (or can be) of Woodbridge Middle School in Woodbridge, NJ tomorrow night there is a remarkable song circle going down featuring Ms. Jones, her husband (and producer extraordinaire + songwriting genius in his own right) Don Dixon, Marshall Crenshaw, and Richard Barone.  HERE is the link to the Facebook event. I will have to comfort myself knowing I got to see Marti Jones and Don Dixon in Nashville in the early 90s.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Retreat Mix

Extended drive this a.m. means an extended Shuffle – so let’s get to it – jump to the shuffle after the break

“Love is God” by Majestico (See – this is what Rock and Roll sounds like. Pure adrenaline and fun. Nashville is home to some incredible bands who do not featured a banjo or a fiddle. Majestico are on the Jeffery Drag Records label)

“Come to My Party” by Black Joe Lewis (this version is off of the recently released Eastside Manor Sessions which is out now on Noisetrade. Black Joe Lewis are red hot right now, and they recently played a show here in Nashville with Jeffery Drag Records flagship artist Bad Cop)

“Nature Without Man” by Minutemen (from the classic 1984 album Double Nickels on the Dime. It’s been nearly 28 years since the world lost D. Boon, and yet this music sounds as fresh as ever.)

“Camellia” by Jesse Turits (another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation. Good stuff from this young Jersey singer/songwriter)

“Travelling Alone” by Jason Isbell (from one of this year’s best – Southeastern comes this heartbreaking song of yearning.)

“Never Too Far” by Moovalya (the first of two rockers from the self-titled album from this band from Arizona)

“Last Day” by The Danbury Lie (another from ?. The Danbury Lie are playing with The Grimm Generation on October 25 at café nine in New Haven, Connecticut. Two of our favorites sharing a stage!)

“Somebody Like You” by Katey Laurel (the Denver singer/songwriter with a song from her From Here album – gorgeous music.)

“Letting Go” by New Victorians (from II. Cinematic indie music)

“To the Throne” by Moovalya (The single from the album)

“Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” by Neko Case (a stunning cover of the Tom Waits song.)

“Retreat” by Minutemen (another by the post-punk legends)

“After Eliot” by Johnny Flynn (from Country Mile. Johnny Flynn just writes and sings some amazingly awesome melodies)

“Pillow Talk” by Wild Child (the title track from the album by Austin Based Wild Child)

“Agua Dulce Tears” by Susan James (from Driving Toward the Sun. This is one of our favorite albums of the year, and it’s no wonder with incredible songs like this one.)

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – All You Ladies and Gentlemen Mix

(Will Kimbrough, Marshall Chapman, and Tommy Womack at Nashville Public Library 9-03-2013)

You know it is almost a literal statement that you can hardly walk a block in Nashville without walking past a songwriter. But, it is a rare and wonderful occasion to be able to see three amazing songwriters sharing songs for free in the middle of a weekday.

Today, a mostly mellowish mix of music that just kind of feels right…

JUMP first – then music…

“Arlene” by Taco Land from Pancakes and Pizza (2013) (Taco Land’s gorgeous and heartfelt love song)

“One Dance Left” by The Dirty Guv’nahs from Somewhere Beneath These Southern Skies (2012) (Like a slow and lazy summer night that you just don’t want to end…)

“Thank You Friends” by Big Star from Third/Sister Lovers (1978) (“All the ladies and gentlemen Who made this all so probable”)

“Man” by Neko Case from The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (2013) (Taken from ANTI Records Summer Sampler via Noisetrade)

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Smoke Dried Face Mix

Ah – the Friday before the Super Bowl.  Shouldn’t this be a national holiday, so that we can all get prepared for the annual religious event?  Just a thought…

Reminder – Please take a second to vote in our Band of the Month contest which runs through February 9. It’s located on the side bar to the left.

Baby, why’m I worried now,
did someone make a fool of me
‘fore I could show ’em how it’s done?
Can’t give up actin’ tough,
it’s all that I’m made of.
Can’t scrape together quite enough
to ride the bus to the outskirts
of the fact that I need love. – Middle Cyclone – Neko Case

Drying up in conversation,
You will be the one who cannot talk
All your insides fall to pieces,
You just sit there wishing you could still make love
They’re the ones who’ll hate you
When you think you’ve got the world all sussed out
They’re the ones who’ll spit at you,
You will be the one screaming out – High and Dry – Radiohead

Hey pretty baby don’t you know it ain’t my fault
I love to hear the steel belts hummin’ on the asphalt
Wake up in the middle of the night in a truck stop
Stumble in the restaurant wonderin’ why I don’t stop – Guitar Town – Steve Earle

Well that was fifteen years ago, I guess I come a long long way
I never heard the end of it, you know I couldn’t stay...
When Im not stuck for time or money,
I still wonder bout that day - Walk in the Woods - Peter Case

These people round here
Wear beaten down eyes sunk in a smoke dried face
So resigned what their fate is,
But not us (no never),
no, not us (no never),
we are far too young and clever.  – Come On Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Alive and Kicking Mix

Stumbling into a chilly mid-week and finally completely back into the swing of things.  I gonna try to have a better attitude today, so nobody screw with me, okay? 🙂  Anyway, cozy mix of totally random song selections from an arbitrary play-list.

ONE:

(note: if you search Insane Jane on You Tube there is another band that comes up.  From the little I could stand to watch, it appears that they suck. Accept no substitutes!)
(click to purchase and download A Green Little Pill by Insane Jane)
Insane Jane was a incredibly awesome late 80s/early 90s Atlanta band. Lead singer Yellow belted out powerful vocals and the band ripped it live.  Once I… is the lead off track from their 1991ish album A Green Little Pill.  It definitely shows off the sound that made them a great band.  Like way too many great bands of that era, they never made it big and it all ended way too soon.  Unfortunately, I never got to see one of their legendary Atlanta live shows, but I did see them in front of way too few people in a hole in North Nashville, and even then without the energy of a crowd they still killed it.

TWO:

(click to purchase and download Skylarking by XTC)
XTC just totally rules. Okay. Skylarking is a great album.  Okay.  Check out the lovely Ballet for a Rainy Day, and be prepared to crave fruit.

THREE:

(click to purchase and download the 10th Anniversary Remaster of Musicforthemorningafter by Pete Yorn)

Life on a Chain  comes from the 10th Anniversary Remastered version of Pete Yorn’s debut album musicforthemorningafter. It’s a good example of early 21st Century alternative pop music.

FOUR:

(click to purchase and download Fox Confessor Brings the Flood by Neko Case)

Neko Case is just freakin’ cool.  She has one the most distinctive voices in Alternative-Folk music today.  Star Witness   comes from her excellent 2006 album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.  Her band New Pornographers are pretty awesome, too, but you already knew that.
