Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle – Snoopin’ ’round My Door Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I ain’t gonna lie, it’s been a rough week…  Music helps.  Music always helps.

Here is our “Wild Wednesday” shuffle that lives up to the name and the concept.  This week’s edition features experimental music, some newer Oklahoma music, a classic L.A. punk rock tune, an iconic rock ‘n’ roll song, a song that has been recorded by Rod Stewart and The Carpenters performed by a classic 80s collaboration, some cool jazz, a 1963 hit song, and a relatively obscure song from a British new wave band…  hmm…

“Tearin’ Up My Ticket” by Wink Burcham

Another outstanding track from that Oklahoma Room CD I found sitting on a table at The 5 Spot.  I am thinking that may be my new submission policy.  Just leave a CD on a table at The 5 Spot, and I will be around to pick it up soon.  Any way, Wink Burham is a singer-songwriter from Tulsa, and as I type this he is into the last four hours of a successful Kickstarter campaign for his next album, Cleveland Summer Night.  So, if you are reading this within four hours of when I wrote it, you can still get in on some of the incentives.

“What We Do Is Secret” by The Germs

A few months ago, I watched the film, “What We Do Is Secret” – a fictionalized account of the short troubled life of Darby Crash and the formation of The Germs – one of the iconic bands of the early L.A. punk scene. Just as a film, I thought it could have been better, but for me, it was carried by my interest in the subject matter and the incredible performance of Shane West as Darby.  Anyway, what I listened today was pour quality, ramshackle live performance of this song. In other words, it was absolutely perfect.

“Hound Dog” by Big Mama Thornton

Three or four years before Elvis, Big Mama Thornton recorded her version of this classic rock n roll song which became her biggest hit.  Big Mama Thornton, as her name implies, was larger than life. Her gender-bending demeanor set the stage for so many rock and roll icons for the next sixty years (up to the present).  This song – done by Big Mama – most definitely rocks!

“Centuries Ago on Prospect Street” by Atticus Floyd

Atticus Floyd now records under the Jolly Light Brigade (or Connection) name. As far as I can tell, the Atticus Floyd recordings are no longer on-line, but I downloaded some before they were gone.  Atticus is part of the Dord Music Group.

“S.A.R. 429” by Smokey the Firebear

We have three Smokey the Firebear tracks in the shuffle today. This is some first class noise from the BNGFKR album.  It is really fun when these tracks come up in a shuffle – I think of them like a palate clearing for the ears and the mind.

“Reason to Believe” by Camper Van Chadbourne

Eugene Chadbourne has been making his unique brand of experimental music for about forty years.  After having worked with them previously, Chadbourne teamed up with college radio darlings, Camper Van Beethoven, for the album from which this track is taken.  “Reason to Believe” is a Tim Hardin song, which was popularized by Rod Stewart and The Carpenters.

“P.S. Unless One Has” by Ornette Coleman

The legendary jazz saxophonist and his orchestra from a 1975 release of some 1959/1960 recording that were compiled without input from Coleman.

“All Our Heads Together” by Smokey the Firebear

Our second Smokey The Firebear song – this one from the Teshio Democracy EP. That record contains a Modest Mouse cover.  E2TG 2014 artist of the year, Darrin Bradbury recently did a set of Modest Mouse songs at a recent Coverfest event. Isn’t it funny how music connects often in the most unlikely of ways?

“Distance” by Exedra

Another track from Elemental from a band that features Jeremy Gluck- who you may recall we featured several times last year when we were spinning songs from his Memory Deluxe record.  Exedra is very ethereal and dreamy music. I dig it quite a bit.

“Song No. 4” by The Soft Boys

This is the band that featured the great Robyn Hitchcock along with Kimberley Rew (who would later be a part of Katrina and The Waves – who had the hit song, “Walking on Sunshine”).  This track was included as a bonus track on the reissue of The Soft Boys second album Underwater Moonlight.  It is very different from “Tainted Love”  (which was by Soft Cell – an unrelated band of the same general era and who are mentioned here only as a semi-inside joke).

“Little Deuce Coupe” by The Beach Boys

Years ago, there was a theme park out by the Grand Ole Opry – called Opryland USA. Now, there is just a mall.  But when it was open, I had countless good times.  “Little Deuce Coupe” was a ride at Opryland. I remember how wonderful it was to spin around under a mirror ball and strobe lights on a hot summer day after eating heavy, greasy theme-park food.  Good times…

“God Confirmed for Dead” by Smokey the Firebear

We close things out with our third Smokey the Firebear track – this one was released as a b-side to a single called “Timberwolf Atka”.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle – Great Day Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, it’s premier week at E2TG as I unveil my new “programming schedule”.

Welcome to debut edition of Trending Tuesday!  Why trending?  Well, for one thing, it starts with the letter “T” which was a requirement in naming this day.  Also, my social media consultants advise me that the term “trending” is er, um… trending these days.

So, what is “Trending Tuesday”?  In some ways it is similar to Featured Friday.  Basically, it is songs/artist that have been fresh on my mind (new – or fairly recent acquisitions/releases), like all “rules”, I play fast and loose.  The Trending Tuesday playlist is different than the Featured Friday playlist, but they have a lot of overlap.  Well… enough exposition – here is the first Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle….

“Shotgun Behind the Door” by Kevin Gordon

Kevin Gordon has been “trending” at E2TG since we got his album Long Gone Time shortly before it was released.  I got to see Kevin backing up Paul Burch recently for weeks one and four of Burch’s residency at The 5 Spot.  A little bird tells me Gordon will have his own 5 Spot residency within the next couple of months.  Also, to hear more about Kevin Gordon (including some words about the song featured today), I highly recommend you check out Country Fried Rock’s interview which was recorded in Nashville during Americana week and recently released.  You can hear it HERE.

“Der Zerfall Von Backerbsen” by Balu and die Surfgrammeln

Until Balu and die Surfgrammeln became my favorite Austrian surf rock band, I did not know that I was missing having a favorite Austrian surf rock band. I didn’t even know that they surfed in Austria????  Seriously, I am digging this music.

“Stop Listen and Love” by The Naddiks

Late last year, our friends from Canberra (Australia) released a single dedicated to Anti-Bullying efforts.  It is a very important subject, and a rocking fun single to boot.  Notice we did the Austria/Australia thing again… please note that the two countries are not the same…. in case you were wondering.

“Be My Good Dream” (Excerpt) by exedra

Another track (or at least an excerpt) from Elemental which is the new album by exedra which is lead by Jeremy Gluck from the UK. Dreamy music… good dreamy music!

“Salto Nel Buio” by Le Folli Arie

In addition to having a favorite Austrian surf rock band, I now also have a favorite Italian prog-pop band.  I have featured this band several times of late.

“Follow Them to Empty Shores/ Inouye” by Smokey The Firebear

After a four song tour of the world, we return stateside with another track from the brand new album by Smokey the Firebear from Connecticut.  The album is called Ohm Atlanta – great experimental, instrumental music.   I am guessing that the second half of this song is named after the late Senator from Hawaii????

“Land Where the Blues Began” by Sara Syms

Another album that has been trending for me since I first heard it, is Sara Syms’ album Way Back Home.  I was talking with some friends recently about whether or not the “album” was in danger  – in this age of downloads and streaming and stupid blogs that shuffle songs… (kidding) but I have always maintained that albums are important.  They do not have to be “concept” albums either. Syms’ record carries a cohesive sound throughout, and there are some recurring themes.  Certainly, the songs can be heard and work well on their own, but there is also value in listening to the album as a whole piece. This is one of my favorite tracks on the album – one that really sets a mood.

“High on the Plains” (Live) by Leland Sundries

From Live at the Creamery. This is not a “new” album, but one that I have come to know over the last several months.  It is trending here – well because I say it is.

“It Was a Great Day” by Lori Kelley

We started with a Nashville artist and we end with another.  Lori Kelley recently released an new album, More.  It looks like this song has been in Kelley’s repertoire for a few years.  It is a catchy, light song about the importance of making each day count.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle – The Under-Overpass Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We have reached Friday… which means another featured Friday shuffle coming up…

Still dealing with a change of seasons cold, but I did get out early last night for the final night of the Paul Burch residency at The 5 Spot.  As he did the first week, Kevin Gordon played guitar with Burch and his WPA Ball Club whose new album Meridian Rising is out today.  It was a really incredible show with special guest Emma Swift.  Beginning next week, Fats Kaplin and Kristi Rose  will hold down the Thursday early residency slot for the month of March (with the exception of St. Patrick’s Day).  That promises to be outstanding.  I think The 5 Spots’ early residency shows are one of the best things Nashville has going on, and looking ahead to the announced and rumored shows coming up, I think you will agree.

Once again, there is a ton of great music going on tonight.  My plans include stopping by the Tim Carroll Happy Hour and then moving over to Bobby’s Idle Hour to see the Dark Horses of East Nashville (Amelia White, Julie Christensen, and Sergio Webb) and then to see how time and my cold are doing after that.

I am thinking about some tweaks to the E2TG format.  This is not E2TG v. 3.0 (that will come soon enough hopefully), but consider this E2TG v. 2.2 (or at least v. 2.1.1). I will work on that this weekend.

Shuffle time!

“Ocean Soul” by David G. Smith

David G. Smith is an amazing songwriter – I was fortunate enough to see him a few weeks ago in a round at The Bluebird Café.  This song is off of his latest album, First Love. This is a lovely song.

“Don’t You Be Too Cool” by The Deadline Shakes

I keep using the word infectious to describe the music of The Deadline Shakes who are currently promoting their new album Zealots.  It is music so catchy, so groovy that it gets inside your head and forces you to feel it.  I have always been a total sucker for this kind of music, and The Deadline Shakes are about as good at it as anybody I have heard in a long time.

“As Far as Angels Go” by Lori Kelley

Songwriters are the bread and butter of Nashville.  Nashville has great players and great bands, but this music city has a long and complicated history of songs and the people who create them.  From professional songsmiths working out of offices on Music Row to “Outlaws” (first on the West End and now around East Nashville)… I have had the great privilege to meet a lot of really great songwriters here in Nashville.  Lori Kelley is one of them.  She came to Nashville by way of the D.C. area where she was part of successful duo (we have featured Cletus and Lori several times).  She just recently released a CD called More which features some of her newer songs (and co-writes).  This song is a tribute to her father.

“Flash Forward” by exedra

Flash Forward to the fourth song of the shuffle… Exedra is the new project featuring Jeremy Gluck.  I was listening to this one as I was driving on the bridge over the Cumberland River this morning…

“Made of Light” by Tymon Dogg

We’re up to the title track from the latest album by Tymon Dogg who is best known for his work with the late Joe Strummer..

“Bone China Saviour” by Drew Worthley

This is our second listen from Crucible the new album by British singer-songwriter Drew Worthley. I found myself really listening to the words of this song, and I like it a lot.

“Afternoon” by The Foresters

Next up… this song was the first single from Sun Songs – the latest album by Connecticut siblings The Foresters.  The Foresters are the flagship band of the Dord Music Group, and as I mentioned yesterday, I have been following their incredible musical journey for nearly a fourth of their young lives. “Afternoon” really set the tone for the musical development and growth on display on Sun Songs.  Every time I hear this song, I find myself singing parts of it for hours after.

“Hard Work Pays” by Sara Syms

And we close out the shuffle with one of my absolute favorite Nashville songwriters.  Sara Syms released Way Back Home toward the end of 2015, and I was fortunate enough to get to write all about it.  This track is a duet between Syms and co-producer Nick Africano, and I love the way the two voices sound together.

Friday is upon us…

It has been a pretty crazy, stressful kind of week, so I cannot say  that I unhappy that it is almost over…

Last night was fun, though – although traffic was horrible.  I set off for Douglas Corner with a GPS estimated arrival time of 6:04p.m.  After I got stopped by a train that came to a complete stop.  After an unsuccessful attempt to find some way around (the train was blocking several main roads), I ended up back where I started, but the train had finally cleared. I finally arrived around 6:25p.m. or so and fortunately, the music had just started.  It was a songwriter’s round that included Mike Cullison and a singer-songwriter named Arielle – who impressed me highly.

I left there and headed to The 5 Spot to catch the last 45 minutes or so of Paul Burch’s residency show.  His outstanding band included Fats Kaplin and two bass players.

Finally, I ended my jaunt at The Family Wash for an incredible performance by Annie McCue. McCue is from Australia but surely has an honorary East Nashville membership card.

Got to hang with some awesome folks at each of those shows.

As I was writing this, I got the official word, that yours truly and Sue Havlish will be the hosts of an hour long radio show on the brand new low power community radio station WXNA. The show (Double Shot with Joe and Sue) will be every Friday from 2:00 to 3:00p.m.  As soon as the launch date is announced, I will let you know.

Friday means, that I hit shuffle from the “Featured Friday” playlist- so without much more ado – let’s get to it!

“Too Far Gone” by Joe Mansman and the Midnight Revival Band

Long time E2TG favorite, Joe Mansman is up first with the title track from the debut EP by his current project. I think this is some of the best work he has done – it has been out for a bit, but please check it out.

“A Cloud A Hand The Sea” by Drew Worthley

Our first listen to a song from the album Crucible which is out now.  Drew Worthley is a London based singer-songwriter.  Expect to hear more…

“If I Didn’t Care” by Ben Lowry

Another great song from Somnium – the solo project by Bang OK Bang member Ben Lowry.

“The River Underground” by exedra

Another one from Elemental.  Exedra is the new project from Jeremy Gluck – who we first were introduced to via his Memory Deluxe album.  This is atmospheric, shoegazey goodness.  Check it out.

“You Was Right Baby” by Eight O’Five Jive

And now, we have officially featured every song on the fantastic album, Too Many Men by Nashville-based jump blues band Eight O’Five Jive. It was groovy, swinging fun songs like this that helped Eight O’Five Jive to be a multiple award-winning band. The band recently made some great noise at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and of course they were one of the inaugural class of “Earie” award winners.  Can’t wait to hear what they have up their sleeves for the encore.

“I’m Sorry and I’ll Try to Make You Feel Better After the Gig” by Discount Ravioli

We  close things out with some post-emomathcore, experimental craziness from the seven song release Come Looj With Us. They have already released the follow up. Via the Dord Music Group from Connecticut.  We have included a video for another Dord band called Urinal Cakes in the video playlist.

Peace out!

I don’t have a whole lot to say today… let’s jump into the shuffle…

“Grizzly Adams” by Roberto and The Tickety 2

Okay, I love this!  I am not sure when I added this to my playlist, but if you aren’t aware, the Dan Haggerty who played Grizzly Adams in the 1970s television series passed away last month.  This song is not really about that, it is a hilarious stab at (mostly) young guys who try to look like Grizzly Adams to “hide their weak chins”.  Roberto Cassani was born in Italy but now lives in Scotland.   I have to find out more about this…

“I Fell Asleep” by exedra

Another track from Elemental – the new album/new project from Jeremy Gluck. The album was released on Monday, February 1.  It’s ethereal, dreamy and oh so cool. Check it out.

“Skeleton” by Elf Power

Elf Power are from Athens, Georgia and part of the Elephant 6 collective. This song is from their 4th album The Winter is Coming which was released in 2000.  Elephant 6 is a big influence on several of the Dord Music Group artists, and I am pretty sure it was one of those guys who put this is my mind.

“Running Back Home” by Michelle Lewis

Another pretty song from the Live at Club Passim EP from singer-songwriter Michelle Lewis.

“Summertime” by Ships Have Sailed

Ships That Sail are an L.A. Alternative duo. The recently released their debut album Moodswings.  This is my first listen.  It is a shimmering song.  I was just reading that the album is tells a story from beginning to end. I will need to listen again with that in mind.  Good song.

“Just Fine” by Benchmarks

Benchmarks have been working on their follow-up to American Night and doing some short tours.  I am excited to hear the new music.  This is the final track we have from their debut (as Benchmarks).  Look for a solo Todd Farrell performance of this song in the Video playlist.  Also, Benchmarks guitarist Eli Rhodes celebrated a birthday on Monday.  And yeah, if anybody is wondering, I’m just fine.

“Words Are Cheap” by Leapfrogtown

Man, I really dig this song.  So far I’ve liked everything I’ve heard from Dreaming in Public.  The band formed in London in 2013.  Catchy as hell!

“A Better Day Tomorrow” by Le Folli Arie

A gorgeous song from the Italian prog-pop band. One of the English language songs on their self-titled album.

“Alex” by Bay Kee

Bay Kee is the solo project of Christine Spilka of The Jean Jackets (one of the MCFK bands we have featured here before).  Wonder Wild was released in mid January. This is crystal clear poppy indie rock music.  Really liking what I’ve heard so far.

“I Am” by Outta the Furnace

We close things out with a our first listen to this hard hitting three-piece blues rock band from southeast Virginia. This is no frills, straight ahead rock and roll with a authentic blues feel.  Expect to hear more from this band here.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Snow Day Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A rare snow day off work, but the shuffle must go on….

Had a blast last night before the winter weather descended… a night at The Family Wash for a pair of CD Release shows by two of my favorite East Nashvillians.  Amelia White and The Blue Souvenirs (tonight featuring Sergio Webb, Justin Amaral, Megan Palmer, and Ron Eoff). Amelia’s new album is called Home Sweet Hotel.  Stone Cupid (Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, Chris Tench, Bones Hillman, and Steve Latanation). Stone Cupid’s new album is called The Cardinal.  Amelia and band were wonderful as always, and Julie and Stone Cupid rocked the house.

To the shuffle:

“You Left the Water Running” by Amy Black

Amy Black kicks off our Snow Day shuffle with a classic Muscle Shoals song from her Muscle Shoals Session album.  This song has been recorded by many people including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.  The song was written by Dan Penn, Rick Hall, and Oscar Franks.

“The World Belongs to You” by Indigenous Engines

Andrew Adkins has a new album out under his own name, and we will get to that very soon, but this is another track from one of two EPs he released in 2015 under the Indigenous Engines name.  This song is from the EP Werewolves.

“St. Sinner” by Exedra

Some newer music from our a E2TG favorite Jeremy Gluck.  Exedra features Gluck along with Darrall Knight and Mark Elliott.  The album is called Elemental, and the music is ethereal, dreampoppy, shoegazey, and all kinds of awesome.

“Sorry” by Youngstrr Joey

Our second listen to London based Youngstrr Joey from Grilled Wiig.  Really digging this music.

“Exotica” by Exedra

An instrumental tune from Elemental… takes me to a different place….

“Promise” by Leapfrogtown

Our second listen to London based Leapfrogtown from Dreaming in Public.  I like this band a bunch.

“Columbus Stockade Blues” by Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau

Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau are getting ready to release the follow up to Tennessee (from which this track comes) which will be called Dia de los Azules. If the first single (which was recently released) and the recent live shows are any indication that album is going to be a great one. This track is a civil war story about a Tennessee boy being held in a Union prison in Columbus, Georgia.

“Elevator” by Artur U and the New City Limits

This is, I think, our last track to feature from Holiday  From Eternity.  The “Earie” award winning Finnish band have promised some big plans for 2016.  “Elevator” is one of my favorite songs from the current album, and it has a pretty infectious groove to it.

“Backbone” by Zachariah Red

Hopefully you read my recent review of Backbone. If not, it is now up on No Depression so give it a read.  This is the title track from the album which is now available on iTunes if that is your preferred outlet.  The live video (for a different song)  features Zach along with some of favorite Nashville folks, Taylor Alexander, Drew Kohl, and Lindsay Ellyn.

“Ode to a Friend” by Jon Magnusson

And we close out the shuffle with a moving song from a singer-songwriter from Stockholm.  His 3 song EP is called Dina drommar (with umlauts over the o that I do not know how to type).  This is the only English song on the EP. It is a tribute to a childhood friend who died at age 15.  It is extremely moving to me because I lost a friend at close to the same age – 35 years ago this month.
