(All though he probably won’t read this): Thanks for Kevn Kinney for raising the bar for the 5 Spot residency, for putting on four very different and very awesome shows, and for reminding me once again why I love this town. (took someone not from town to do it, too!).  Last night was phenomenal with Kinney generously sharing his time with Todd Snider, Rorey Carroll, Tom Clark, Chuck Mead, and Warner Hodges (who was backed by Dan Baird, Joe Blanton, and Brad Pemberton). There were so many amazing moments.

Tonight should be another amazing night of music… did I mention I love this town?  The Basement East will be my destination tonight for Nancy Terzian and The Leg Men and Stone Cupid (starting at 7:00)  and then four full band sets from Darrin Bradbury, Brian Wright, Raelyn Nelson, and Lauren Farrah (starting at 9:00)

A perfect antidote for the blistering heat we’ve been experiencing this summer… this glorious sounding song from Austin, Texas based Whiskey Shivers.

“Everybody Knows (For Trayvon)”  by Hurray for the Riff Raff

A heart-breaking, powerful, moving, and beautiful song from the New Orleans based band.

“All I Know” by Lydia Loveless

The great songs continue with this one – the lead track from the 2013 EP Boy Crazy.

“Little Bit of Whiskey” by Bill Morrissey

The late folksinger with a song from the 1991 rerecording of his self-titled debut album with was released in 1984.  Pure songwriting at it’s very best.

“Out of Road” by Lindsay Ellyn

The title track from Lindsay Ellyn’s EP – released back in May which is one of my favorite releases of 2015 so far.  “Lindsay Ellyn represents all the best qualities of the “New Nashville” music scene… She brings a fresh perspective and a new voice to town, while maintaining an understanding and interest in the traditions that made us Music City in the first place.” (I said that!)

“Broken Heart Tattoos” by Ryan Bingham

From Bingham’s latest album, Fear and Saturday Night.  By this point in my shuffle- I knew the random feature was onto something pretty cool.  “Accidently” pulling together a fantastic string of really great songs.

“Mr. Musslewhite’s Blues” by Ray Wylie Hubbard

From Hubbard’s latest album Ruffian’s Misfortune.  This song was one of the highlights when I saw him live earlier this year.

“Rods and Cones” by A Color Engine

The lead track from Voyage Underwater; 56 Knots.  A fantastic song from the now defunct band/duo that paired Eric Burchfield from E2TG featured band Elephant Goes West with Don Ryan who is one of my all-time favorites.  A little bird… told me Don’s new album is getting close to being finished… but that bird actually has “lie” in its name, so who knows…

“Love is All Around” by Husker Du

And what better way to end the shuffle then with Minneapolis post-punk legends doing a cover of the theme song to the classic sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show.  “We’re gonna make it after all!”

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Alone in a Crowd Mix

The end of a long strange week… we have a pretty nifty mix of old and new music of various styles and moods and subjects… all making a cohesive morning shuffle…

“Painted On Attitude” by T. Hardy Morris

An October 2014 single from T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate.  He is part of the new project Diamond Rugs along with members of Deer Tick and Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.  Diamond Rugs has a Noisetrade release that includes this track and some music from Deer Tick.

“Blue Light of the Fire” by Heather Powell

Heather Powell’s new album A Haze of Grays and Blues is out (this week).  This song is from her previous album Believe it to Life. A new version of this song (same lyrics,  different tune) is on the new album as “Blue Light”.  The video included is a recent live version of that new song.

“Lost in the Cosmos (Song for Chris Bell)” by Sons of Bill

A song for the late Big Star member whose classic solo album was released some 14 years after his tragic 1978 death at age 27.  The song is on Love and Logic the most recently album by Virginia band Sons of Bill.

“Camera” by R.E.M.

Another classic track from R.E.M.’s second album Reckoning.

“Never Talking to You Again” by Husker Du

From the Short Songs mixtape – taken from the Minneapolis post-punk legends’ classic second album Zen Arcade. A Grant Hart composition.

Nashville’s favorite instrumental steel guitar driven surf rock band from the debut album 615 to Fame. I have been following Jeremy Fetzer and Spencer Cullum Jr. since I saw them play with Caitlin Rose a few years ago.

“The Long Run Out” by The Unforgiven

You don’t know how good it feels to say a new song from The Unforgiven.  The Unforgiven was an 80s band that by all rights should have been huge.  They had the look and the sound, they were larger than life and seemed to have stepped right out of a Spaghetti Western. To call them a Big Guitar band is an amazing understatement.  Circumstances being what they were and are, their sole, self-titled album ended up being their only release.  In 2012, the band reformed for a show at Stagecoach Festival and in 2014 their album was finally given a new release.  This song was a bonus track recorded around the time of the 2012 reunion, and it is pure The Unforgiven.  If you (like way too many) missed out on this band the first time around or haven’t had a heard them in a long time, climb on board.  Hang ’em High!

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – In any Language Mix

First off, let me be the first (okay not the first by far) to say that the notion that Nashville is a great town for music is not hype. I don’t get out as often as I would like, but it seems like every time I do – amazing things happen.  Now, I don’t think I am that lucky a guy (although pretty lucky all things considered) nor do I think my mere presence inspires such awesomeness to occur. Therefore, my conclusion has to be that remarkable, amazing, and awesome music happens all the time in Nashville (East, West, and all points in-between).

Last night, it was an incredible night of music at The Basement.  Nashville people (or anyone who finds themselves in Nashville on a Tuesday night) get yourselves down to The Basement (under Grimey’s New and Pre-Loved Music) for New Faces night. Local and in-town artists of the Indie persuasion take the stage. Grimey curates, mans the soundboard… There was so much goodness last night, and I will definitely be back. I posted a bit about it over on Facebook. Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray were phenomenal.  They played at least two songs which will be on their next album – set for a spring ’14 release – which were both really great.  Fun night…

“Nostalgia” by Dog Without Warning (from Bark.  Seriously, I love this band and this EP. They are CXCW alums, and I was first introduced to their music at this years “event”. The band reached out to me when the put out this record, and I fell head over heels for it. The music is a major departure from “Go Girl” which I previously heard and liked. Bark has a surprising folksy, Americanaish, country vibe going. Most importantly, it has great songs with killer hooks.)

“Eight Miles High” by Husker Du (Covering The Byrds. This is from an extended single which also includes the band’s classic Makes No Sense at All and a cover of the Mary Tyler Moore theme song. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, “What would Husker Du?”  What indeed.)

“Back to You” by Perrin Lamb (a talented alternative/Pop singer/songwriter from here in town.)

“The Shell” by Dr. Fate (Another great song on the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Compilation? Seriously?)

“Unforgettable” by Ani DiFranco and Jackie Chan (cover of the song popularized by Nat King Cole – who posthumously recorded a duet of the song with his daughter. Wait a minute!?????  Ani DiFranco and Jackie Chan? That Jackie Chan? Yep.  The results are as one might expect… it’s from the When Pigs Fly compilation)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – That Bangle’s Song Mix

  • A Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon and Garfunkel from Bookends (1968)

A perfect song in mood and tone for getting moving on a gloomy day.  In my opinion this is one of Simon and Garfunkel’s best songs.  “Look around…”
  • “Standing in the Rain” by Husker Du from Warehouse: Songs and Stories (1987)

Well, well, well shuffle function, you’re two for two so far this morning in matching songs to the mood of the day.  As I listened to this a light drizzle fell. Husker Du were amazingly productive during their relatively short tenure as a recording band. By the time Warehouse came out, internal dissension and personal issues had taken their toll, and the band broke up on the ensuing tour. Despite all of this, Warehouse is a great record.  

 Another cool cover from the Jurado/Swift album.  Crazy Like a Fox was originally written and recorded by a young Lenny Kaye back in 1965 and released under the name Link Cromwell.

The late great Doc Watson from his debut album with his version of the old Dock Boggs song.

  • “Drink Drank Drunk” by A Sunny Day in Glascow from Autumn, Again (2010)

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Last Hurrah? Mix

Well, it’s Friday again, and we’ve reached what will likely be the final Morning Shuffle of 2012.  As I mentioned yesterday, I loaded up my new memory card with a random sampling of my digital music collection.  I left some space for all of the great new music to come in 2013.  

UPDATE on Band of the Year Voting:  As of the time I am writing this post, we’ve had in the neighborhood of 1750 votes.  Brooklyn based The Disappointment are holding a 5% point leave over Skeletons in the Piano who are from Upstate New York.  Currently, New York band The Great American Novel are running third.  You’ve got a couple more days to vote. Voting will end just before Midnight (Central Time) on Sunday December 30.  Also, we need about 200 more votes to surpass our total vote count for last years inaugural Band of the Year poll.  So keep the votes coming.  Here is where to vote:  CLICK HERE

Now for the shuffle which is pretty mind-blowingly eclectic and includes some songs I probably heard for the first time today.  After the JUMP!


 Amazingly all but one of the songs were available on the widget and the one that wasn’t was a cover and we got the original on there.

1.  Clap Your Hands by The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band from The Wages (2010).  (Rural Indiana Blues) I noticed that four Facebook friends Liked this band’s page including two friends from my hometown, a Carnie (of Black Jake and the Carnies) and a member of The Imperial Rooster.

2. Walk On by G. Love from The Hangout Music Fest 2012 Sampler – from G. Love’s 2011 album Fixin’ to Die (Hold the Special Sauce) 

3. Virtue and Wine by Sondre Lerche from Faces Down (2002) (A Goodwill Store find and a damn good album)

4.  Saturday’s Child by Steve Almaas from Trailer Songs (2012) (Ex. Suicide Commando/Beat Rodeo: songs recorded in two airstream trailers in the Catskills – I’ve been a huge fan of Steve Almaas for years. This is a great record which we told you about right after it came out).
5.  She Floated Away by Husker Du (umlauts omitted ’cause I’m too lazy to add them) from Warehouse: Songs and Stories (1987) (The sixth and final album from the post-punk legends – completing a Minneapolis themed set of two songs – this is a Grant Hart penned song)
  
6.  Dinner by Blood Orange from the Dinner Btw Bad Girls single (2011) (Dev Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion aka Blood Orange – well crafted electronic based R&B music)

7.  Black Leaf by The Cave Singers from No Witch (2011) (Seattle based Indie music featuring former members of Pretty Girls Make Graves – this was one I downloaded and subsequently lost track of – I kind of dig this).

8.  Black Picket Fences by Walking for Pennies from Forget About Wonderland (2012) (awesome Mo-Grass music from one of the bands in our Band of the Year poll)
 (Couldn’t find a video for Black Picket Fences so how about a Radiohead cover?)
9.  Wave Goodbye by Ty Segall Band from CMJ Mixtape – June 2012 – from Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse (2012) (awesome garage punk music from San Francisco with rat-a-tat-tat drums and hard guitars – coolness)
10. Wake Up (Live in NYC 9/23/10) (Arcade Fire cover) by John Legend and the Roots from a download only release (2010) (Cool and funky cover of the Funeral single – The Roots are by far the best house band on television).

By 1991, Sam Phillips had already released five albums.  The first four being on a Contemporary Christian Music label.  By this point, she was married to Producer extraordinaire T-Bone Burnett (they would later divorce), and Burnett had produced two of her albums.  They worked together again on the album Cruel Inventions. From that album, we have the lead track called Lying.

k.d. lang’s first release in the States was called Angel with a Lariat which was released in 1987.  I think I totally wore out my cassette tape copy of this one.  Diet of Strange Places is a great jumping in point for this album (which still sounds great, some 25 years down the road).

I can’t believe no video found for Diet… here’s the title track to the album…

Bruce Cockburn’s album Dancing in the Dragon’s Jaws was released in 1979 and produced one of this most popular songs (in fact his only song to hit the Top 40 in the US – not that we care about that).  Wondering Where the Lions Are is a great song which has stood the test of time and remains one of my favorites.


 

1979 was a good year for music.  Coincidentally, we have the second song in a row from an album released in 1979.  That year, British/American rock icons, The Pretenders released their self-titled debut album.  We have an instrumental track from that record. Space Invader contains actually sounds from the classic arcade game Space Invaders.

 
Husker Du’s entire recorded output was released within an approximately four year period, but they were, are and forever shall be one of the most influential bands ever (IMNSHO). Turn on the News from their second album, Zen Arcade, stands as one of the band’s best.
