Another great one from the Driven Back album. Such great songs, such great harmonies.

“Sailor’s Song” by Brian Carpenter and the Confessions

Brian Carpenter is from Boston.  The new album from Brian Carpenter and the Confessions is due out in October.  The pitch name dropped not only Nick Cave but Wim Wenders and David Lynch as well… needless to say this film buff was intrigued. This song (the last on the album) is my first listen, and I really like what I’m hearing.  Expect more from me about this album.

“Midnight Wave” by Two Wounded Birds

Two Wounded Birds were an English band that formed in 2010 and disbanded in 2012.  This song was a single released in 2011.

“Last I Heard” by Charlie Whitten

Charlie Whitten is a Nashville based singer-songwriter, this song is from a Noisetrade Sampler called An Assortment. Man I like this guys music a bunch.

“Forked River Roadside Shrine” by Ben Arthur

Another cut from Ben Arthur’s Call and Response album of “Answer Songs”. This one is one of two responses to Joyce Carol Oates short stories in the collection.  Ben Arthur is also Host and Producer of “SongCraft Presents” which is a pretty fascinating web series. Songcraft Presents has also been producing “Songs from the Road” in which Arthur works with a featured songwriter to write a song during a drive usually from one city to another.  The End Men’s Matthew Hendershot is also involved in both series.

“Gentle on My Mind” by John Hartford

From the Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats album which accompanies the exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Glen Campbell made the song famous, but Hartford wrote the song and his son Jamie performed the song at the release show for this album (held outside the Museum.

“Freight Train Boogie” by Captain Luke

From the Music Maker Relief Foundation.  Captain Luke passed away back in May, but thanks in no small part to the work of the Foundation, his music will live on.

“Sing Along” by Grant Lee Buffalo

“Planet Caravan” by Brown Sabbath

From a Noisetrade Bonnaroo Sampler.  Brown Sabbath injects some Latin/Hardcore/Funk sounds into this version of the Blake Sabbath classic.

Das Ding are an Electronic band from Rotterdam.  This song comes from a compilation called 13 O’clock put out by Atlanta based PPNW Records.

Well…. we made it to mid-week.  Last night was a blast.  I walked down from work to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the CD Release Show for the Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats (the 2 CD Set accompanies the exhibit currently running).  Bill Lloyd and the phenomenal Long Players served as the core band and were joined by an all-star lineup that included some of the players on the original recordings (like Al Kooper) as well as family members like John Carter Cash, Jamie Hartford, Britt Ronstadt.  Charlie Daniels, Michael Nesmith (Monkees), Julie Christensen, Kathy Mattea, Radney Foster, Jason Ringenberg and many more made for a memorable event.  A brief rain delay did not seem to chase to many people away.

After that show, I headed to the Hi Watt to catch Heathen Sons (who were really good) – they are competing in Music City Mayhem for a slot playing Live on the Green so check them out and give them a vote if you can.  Benchmarks were next.  Formerly known as Todd Farrell and the Dirty Birds, Benchmarks just recently released a new EP which we will be presenting soon.  The band had not played together in a few months, but they really sounded good to me, and as always, the songs were excellent.  Todd Farrell pulled double duty, joining headliners Two Cow Garage on guitar.  It was the last night of a month long tour for the long running Ohio band, and they did not hold back – offering a full-frontal assault of their unique brand of rock and roll.

“Out My Window” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Another Nashville singer-songwriter, Tiffany Huggins Grant is up next with another song from her new album Jonquil Child which was released yesterday.

“Rock of Ages” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Grant Lee Buffalo covers Def Leppard… not really… from the album Mighty Joe Moon which I came across in a Goodwill bin, this “Rock of Ages” is an original and a really cool song.

“Call of the Wild” by Tom Tom Club

From Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom which has been in our playlist for several months.  After this, we just have one more from that album which we have not featured in a shuffle. In case you don’t know, Tom Tom Club is lead by the husband and wife rhythm section from Talking Heads (Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth).

“Alonely” by Bob Lewis

Last week, Bob Lewis (yet another Nashville singer-songwriter) opened up for Darrin Bradbury and Austin Lucas at The 5 Spot, and I was impressed enough to grab some of his music.  This is the first official E2TG listen.  The track in on his 2011 album, NOw here…  I could not find a video of Bob Lewis so here is “Alonely” via Bandcamp.

The latest Feel Bad for You mixtape features “Summer” songs and includes this Beach Boys track which appeared on their 1964 album Shut Down Volume 2 and it was also the B-Side to the single, “Dance, Dance, Dance”.

“Exit a Hero” by The Vigilance Committee

The Vigilance Committee is a indie/punk band from Long Island. Exit the Hero is the title and final track of the band’s latest release – a concept album which details events in 1800s San Francisco.

Another track from Panamanian Times. Just flat out cool punkish rock from New York City.  From the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen collective.

“Fire and Flood” by Joe Sundell

This song has been lingering around my playlist for a long while.  From Joe Sundell’s awesome album, The Hat Thief.  Dig this song.

“Are You Gonna Be My Friend?” by Drew Kohl

Our first shuffle listen to Sweetheart EP by Drew Kohl.  We first heard Drew’s original voice as part of Young America.  Drew tackles the subject of love in some interesting ways, and Sweetheart is a really good record.  But don’t take my word for it, read what I had to say…. 

“Turn Me On” by Tipi Valley

Ed Toff (a.k.a. Tipi Valley) has been a favorite of Ear to the Ground for several years.  His latest release is called Dust.  Tipi Valley is from Swansea in the UK, and he doesn’t use You Tube.  So, you will need to listen to Turn Me On using the widget below

Hands down one of the best shows I’ve seen this year was John Moreland at The 5 Spot (just a couple of hours after seeing him at Music City Roots).  He managed to silence both crowds with his gritty, gut-wrenching take on Americana/Roots/Folk music.  Hands down one of the best records of 2015 is Moreland’s High on Tulsa Heat.  Here is a track from that album.

“H.S.K.T.” by Sylvan Esso

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.  Sylvan Esso is Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and Nick Sanborn who does electronic producing under the name Made of Oak.  This song is simple yet brilliant, infectious without being obnoxious.  

“Lone Star Song” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Might Joe Moon was a Goodwill CD bin find, and I have really enjoyed discovering this album.  Lone Star Song may be my favorite song on the album, but I’m not sure.  It is a favorite, though…

“Jim Along Josie” by The Barefoot Movement

I can count on one finger the number of young, tradition folk bands that I have met in a chance encounter at the Cash Cabin Studio.  The Barefoot Movement would be that one finger.  Off of their EP The High Road.  Jim Along Josie is a foot-stomping traditional folk song.

“Ground” by Terrible

Terrible are Nashville band who are anything but… “Ground” is a song from their album Oakwood which was released earlier this month.

Two songs with “’em” in the title in a  row. From London Calling, this is a cover of a song originally recorded by the British Ska band, The Rulers.   

“Leavings” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

Due to not feeling well, I missed what I am sure was a great performance by Lori Kelley at The Building in East Nashville, but I am fortunate enough to have seen her play and hopefully to see her play again soon.  I also had the great good fortune to see a rare Nashville appearance of Lori with her long-time D.C. area partner Cletus Kennelly.  I got hold of their album, Lotus, and I have really been digging the music.

Our final track from the album, Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things from our favorite band of misfits from the Northwest part of Arkansas.

“The Killer Inside Me” by Maynard and the Musties

I assume the song title is a reference to the Jim Thompson book or related film? Maynard and the Musties hail from Brooklyn. In the video playlist, we have their performance from Couch by Couchwest this year.  Anyone who hangs out on the Couch is okay by me.  I now must see what else I can get a hold of by this band.  Like this a bunch.

“Talk to God” by Tim Carroll

Just about every Friday, Tim Carroll hosts the happiest happy hour (so happy it lasts two and a half hours) at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. This song is always one of the highlights for me.  This Friday, Tim will not be at The 5 Spot (Patrick Sweany is filling in), Tim, Luella, Darrin, Cameron, and Toby are touring through the Midwest States that start with ‘I’.  I think it is Iowa tonight.  So, happy to hear this song in the shuffle so it will feel like a regular Friday.

“Last Days of Tecumseh” by Grant Lee Buffalo

This may be favorite song on the Mighty Joe Moon album.  It’s a good one in any event.

A Darrin Bradbury fan favorite – from the Tur-Lyfe live album.  I have heard the Masters from the new DB album and this song sounds amazing.

“Golden Gate” by STS9

STS9 formed in Atlanta 15 years  ago or so.  The name is short for Sound Tribe Sector 9.  They play highly original, instrumental rock music. This track came off of a Nosietrade SXSW Mixtape. I like this a bunch.

Tim Carroll, Darrin Bradbury, and Tom Schreck in the same shuffle?  My Nashville  music cup runneth over.

“Bull Fight” by The End Men

Long time Ear to the Ground favorites and friends (and 2013 Band of the Year).  The End Men dropped their latest album, “Terms and Conditions” earlier this month.  This song features two elements that I love: The added saxophone work of Mathew Elia and the vocal harmonies Matthew Hendershot and Livia Ranalli.

“Come Gather Round” by John Wesley Harding

Nowadays, he records under his given name, Wesley Stace, but when Why We Fight was released he was still recording under the name taken from the Bob Dylan album.  Either way, he’s one of my favorites.

As I was walking back to my car from an absolutely amazing Bob Dylan show last night, I was reflecting on what an amazing month of live music this has been…  Did I mention that Dylan was amazing.  I saw him first and last in 1988, and he was simply going through motions. Back then, his set including some of his all-time classics, but it didn’t matter.  That show left me flat.  Flash forward 27 years, Dylan’s set was very heavily weighted toward his last few albums, many of which I wasn’t that familiar, but the sound was great, Dylan seemed to be having a blast, and as a result, I put the show up among the best I’ve seen.  I feel like I can finally say that I have seen Dylan.

“Gonna Change” by Gear Daddies

Another track from Billy’s Live Bait.  Gear Daddies are revving up for hometown 25th Anniversary shows in Minnepolis coming up soon. 

“The Oldest Story in the Book” by Paul Kelly

Australian Paul Kelly is one of those musicians that I have known of and loved for a long time, but who I someone feel like I have missed out on. He has been making music for many years, and he is still making great music, and I am trying to get up to speed.   This song, which I love, is from his 2004 album Ways and Means and was included on his 2008 compilation Songs from the South Volume 2.  The video was shot at Music City Roots here in Nashville in 2013 when that show was still held at the Loveless Barn.

“Mostly Miss in a Hit Kinda Town” by Darrin Bradbury

A live version of a song that later appeared on Darrin’s True Love album.  Supposedly, this recording from his live album Tur-Lyfe: A Live Recording of Unfortunate Events, is the first performance of this song (but don’t rely on this information for anything important).  Darrin will be coming soon to a city near you (if you are near one of the cities – in the Mid-West and South) in the near future, and rumor has it a new live album is coming soon in addition to the hotly anticipated Life is Hard studio album which I have heard and love. 

“Sleepwalker Blues” by Joe Sundell

Sometimes songs meander around my playlist for several months and then jump out a odd times to offer a jolt a awesomeness. I featured some of Joe Sundell’s music from his album The Hat Thief many months back (maybe a year or so), and this song stuck around my playlist to add some authentic country music to this mix.

“I Been to Georgia on a Fast Train” by Billy Joe Shaver

Speaking of which… Billy Joe Shaver is included in my listing of GREAT artists that I got to see live this month.  He performed at Music City Roots a couple of weeks ago.  This one goes all the way back to his 1973 debut album Old Five and Dimers Like Me.

“Fairly Local” by Twenty One Pilots

There are some that may say that following up Billy Joe Shaver with Twenty One Pilots is pretty screwed up.  Hell, I may even be one of them, but I have learned not to question the wisdom of the shuffle. The shuffle works in mysterious ways… take that how you must… This song is from the forthcoming album Blurryface, and it was included on a Noisetrade Bonnaroo compilation.

“Sure Thing” by Sam Morrow

I featured Sam Morrow’s music on Ear to the Ground a couple of years ago, and I am really glad he jumped back onto my radar.  I have been seriously digging the new music he’s been putting out.  This is a live recording of a song from his 2014 album Ephemeral which is an EP which you can find on Noisetrade.

“Song for Harry Nilsson” by Luke Saxton

Luke Saxton is a young singer-songwriter from the UK.  This song about the late American singer-songwriter is on the album Sunny Sadness which was released back in November, and I like it quite a bit.

It was kind of a cool morning here in Nashville, but it felt great.  The certainty that Spring is in full effect, and that Summer is barreling down the turnpike hot on Spring’s tail. Spring seems as good a time as any (maybe better?) to step back and reassess and think about what comes next.  Ear to the Ground has exceeded my wildest expectations (mainly because I didn’t have many), and I am happy that nearly four years on, I am not feeling any real desire to stop.  Still, from the beginning, Ear to the Ground had frequently (or infrequently) evolved (usually due to some external pressure).  The Shuffle was originally about 3-5 songs, then for a while I had the “pre-shuffle” which kind of expanded the shuffle to upwards of 20 or more songs. We’ve settled into a groove of 8-12 songs per day, and it is good, but I feel an itching to do something more, something different.  I don’t know what that is yet, but I have some ideas…. until then… let’s hit the shuffle….

“In the Summertime” by Beat Rodeo

Another cool track from Home in the Heart of the Beat (1986 IRS Records).

“Miss Marcy” by Johnny Horton

A classic murder ballad from the one and only Johnny Horton.  Horton was killed by a drunk driver on November 5, 1960.

“Ballad of the Choir Boy Band Robber” by Ike Reilly

One of the last two songs from the Ike Reilly compilation we grabbed off Noisetrade a good while back.  This is an Ike Reilly Assassination song originally released on the album Sparkle in the Finish.  

“Your Name is Wild” by Guided by Voices

From the 1996 album Under the Bushes Under the Stars…  It was for many the years, the last Guided By Voices album to feature the band’s “classic” line-up.  Guided by Voice broke up in 2004, reformed in 2010, and then disbanded for a second time at the end of last year.

“Future 40’s (String of Pearls)” by Syd Straw (feat. Michael Stipe)

Guess what?  This song has been in the shuffle before – recently.  I forgot to remove it from the playlist – like I usually when songs appear.  Guess what? I really don’t care.  It is a great song featuring the amazing Ms. Straw along with R.E.M. front man, Michael Stipe. For R.E.M. fans, this album was released between Green and Out of Time.  Classic Nickelodeon fans may remember Syd Straw from her role as a middle school math teacher on The Adventures of Pete and Pete.  This song is on her 1989 solo debut Surprise which also featured contributions from Anton Fier, Richard Thompson, and Jody Harris among others.

“Hell for Leather” by Hoodoo Gurus

A track from the Hoodoo Guru’s third album, Blow Your Cool! which was released in 1987.  We’ll be digging more into that album in the days, weeks and months allow – subject to the slings and arrows of outrageous shuffles.

“Down Yonder” by David Schnaufer

More music from the late, great Mountain Dulcimer master, David Schnaufer.

“Side by Side” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Richard Barone’s 1987 album Cool Blue Halo was recorded live and is one of the most stunningly beautiful albums made and one of my all-time favorites.  Here is a classic Bowie cover from that album.

Look Sharp! was the 1979 debut album by Joe Jackson.  I first “discovered” Joe Jackson when Night and Day came out in 1982, but this album has become one of my favorites.  “I don’t work in supermarkets any more…”

“Terrifying Love” by Marshall Crenshaw

It’s been fun listening again to Downtown.  The album came out in 1985 when I was in college, and I listened to this quite a bit while driving around town, so much so that these songs are imprinted upon my memory with the sights and feelings of that time.

The title track from Ron Muga’s 2014 album, a devastatingly beautiful song.

“America” (Simon and Garfunkel cover) by First Aid Kit

The title track from an EP released earlier this year by the Swedish duo, and a gorgeous cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic from Bookends.

“Feels So Good” by The Record Company

The title track from the L.A. Rock/Blues band’s 2013 EP. Digging this record, a bunch.  Proving that when Sue Havlish recommends a band, you need to listen.

“A Time Machine Built for Two” by The Ghoul Goes West

Seriously, I know I say this a lot, and I know I don’t post music I don’t like, but I really want you all to check out The Ghoul Goes West.  Their latest album is Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things. There are some classic songs in this shuffle and some of my all-time favorite artists, and this song sounds great to me alongside those songs.  Instant classic? Maybe.  Great song? Certainly.

Thanks to my friend Too Much Country for including this song on the March Feel Bad for You Mixtape.  The Big Happy was a short-lived band that included the late great Billy Block who fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed away March 11.  The band also included Block’s wife Jill and the awesome Tom Mason and his wife.  The video comes from a performance at the Billy Block Remembrance and features one of his sons.   On a side note: as some one of Cajun descent, the term “Chank-a-Chank” really resonates – as does this song.

Once again, Noisetrade comes through to expose me to music I’ve been missing without even knowing I was missing it.  Whiskey Shivers are playing in Nashville tonight at The End (and join an illustrious list of shows I have to miss – damn you Nashville and your abundance of live music choices!).  But, if you are not otherwise engaged, you should go and tell me all about it.

“It’s not as thought I really need you. If you were here, I’d only bleed you.”  One of my all time favorite songs… Reckoning is such a great album!

The companion piece to “(scattered)” which we previously featured.  From Scattered Moments of Connection.  Clocking in at :22 seconds.  We take whatever The Danbury Lie we can get.  Speaking of which The Danbury Lie released this album in January, and they have already released another one called Choose Your Delusion which is in our mix.  The Danbury Lie are long time #E2TG faves and if you haven’t you should definitely check them out.  They are part of the small but growing Connecticut faction of Ear to the Ground favorites.

“Walking Out on Love” by Paul Collins’ Beat

From the debut album by seminal power pop band The Beat who later become Paul Collin’s Beat to avoid confusion with the UK band The Beat who were billed as The English Beat in the U.S. for the same reason [edited] and to avoid a threatened lawsuit by the American The Beat’s record label.  The two bands recently toured together recently playing on the coincidental name similarities. [end edit] This The Beat was formed by Paul Collins after the breakup of The Nerve and the short-lived The Breakaways which featured Collins and Peter Case.  This song was originally performed by the Nerve and originally recorded by The Breakaways before ending up on this album.  Green Day made the song part of their Broadway musical American Idiot.

“You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon

From Graceland and famous for the music video featuring Simon and Chevy Chase.  I have a story to tell about this song… a little while back, I went to the weekly open mic at Jed’s Sport’s Bar hosted by Lightning 100.  I was there to help celebrate my friend (an incredible singer/songwriter) Jon Latham’s birthday.  After Jon played the last song of the night (which was amazing), this song came on over the P.A. and an unrehearsed, totally spontaneous “flash mob” broke out.  It was a sight to see.

“Standing in the Doorway” by Soul Asylum

This song, from Hang Time, probably ranks high on my top list of favorites songs to air guitar in front of the mirror to…

“Nowhere” by Jeremy Gluck/Robert Coyne

Just when you thought, I’d forgotten your daily doses of Memory Deluxe…  Two things:  1. I repeat the shuffle picks which songs come up and in what order.  2. I really do have 750 songs in the active playlist and only about five left from this awesome album.  

As always support all of the artists you love in whatever way you are able… buy music, go to shows, buy merch, spread the word throughout social media.  There are tons of great artists out there, and most of them are doing for love but could use some money.  Peace out!

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Camp Crystal Lake Mix

 I am a long-time triskaidekaphobe, but so far (knock on wood), today has been pretty good.  We had a change in the weather here in Nashville, and the heat and humidity finally broke into a sunny and rather cool day.  Which is good because it is really hard to get excited about the return of Pumpkin Spice anything when it’s mid 90s and humid.  It just is.

Well circumstances being circumstantial, I don’t have the hoped for music explosion today – just a regular old shuffle. Still, as regular old shuffles go, this one is pretty sweet.
