Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Handle With Care Mix

Monday.  And we have another shuffle that demonstrates many of  the best qualities of what makes our daily shuffles so special (and they are special….) – we have a collection of excellent songs – a few mini-almost-themes running through some of the songs, a fairly diverse collection of styles but nothing terribly extreme (by our standards).  Let’s do it!

Emily Wolfe from Austin starts us off with the dreamy opening track off of their Roulette EP which was released just over a month ago. 

“Man I Am” by Goodbye June from Deer Head Music Presents: Indie Mixtape Nashville/ Nor the Wild Music Flows

The bluesier, rockinger side of Nashville Indie music, and another fine track from the Deer Head Music Presents mixtape. I really dig this song, and I want to hear more from this band.

“Savannah Almost Killed Me” by American Aquarium from Burn.Flicker.Die.

My internet friend and CXCW legend Josie Little has a birthday today (so Happy Birthday Josie).  This song goes out to her because she posted about seeing these guys this weekend, and my shuffle function was kind enough to include this song in the mix today.  American Aquarium ya’ll… just… American Aquarium!

“You’re So Small” by Lael Summer from Burden to Bear

Lael Summer doesn’t pull any punches.  I wish I had a voice like hers when I need to tell people off… I think I’ll just play this song and let them figure out what I’m trying to say.

A mini-theme of three great female vocalists in a row.  A powerful stripped down version of a song from her most recent album.  Madi Diaz used to live in Nashville.

“Traveling Wilburys” by Heath McNease from Fort Wayne (songs inspired by the film)

Heath McNease sings about the late 80s supergroup that featured Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison. Whoever they are… Any way, I dig this song, and I took advantage to include the Traveling Wilbury’s song (which gives its name to today’s mix and which is mentioned in the Heath McNease song) in the Video Playlist today.  Handle with Care…

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Fool Who Knows Mix

Of late, one of the musical highlights of my week has been the Wednesday night Tim Carroll/Darrin Bradbury extravaganza at Fran’s Eastside Tavern.  Just having the opportunity to see this two talents in a casual/laid back setting has been amazing, and it has been fun to see this thing grow into a bit of a happening.  If you live near Nashville and can stay up late and handle a whole lot of smoke, you should come out.  Last night, those who showed up and stuck around were treated to the added bonus of a short set from David Dondero – who NPR’s All Songs Considered called one of the best living songwriters.  I can tell you based on what I heard, they were not exaggerating in the least.

“Marionette” by Emily Wolfe from Roulette

We start with another cool track from Austin, Texas based Dream rocker, Emily Wolfe.

“Fool Who Knows” by Little Village from Little Village

Our revisit of the only album pre-Americana supergroup Little Village reaches it’s penultimate moment.  I almost wrote that this is one of my favorite songs on the album, but I realized I’ve said that about just about all of the tracks.  Suffice it to say this is an amazing album.  In case you are just joining us, Little Village was John Hiatt, Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner, and Nick Lowe.  Is it any surprise this is such an awesome album?

After hearing his song, “Danglin'” on the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation, I just had to download the neighborpoem album to add to my playlist.  I am really digging his unique sound and killer songs.

“Surfing Iceland” by The Jason Drug Reaction from Down On The Pharmacy

Another cool track from the enigmatic The Jason Drug Reaction.  “Cool” see what I did there?  Fun fact: Iceland is not really made of ice, but Greenland is made of ice… or something like that. I don’t know.  The Jason Drug Reaction may or may not be enigmatic, but if me calling them that intrigues you enough to check them out – then my work here is done.  Seriously, the song is cool in every sense of that word.

“Iodine In My Coffee” by Muddy Waters from Muddy Waters

Random musing: I wonder if The Ramones were thinking of this song when they wrote “Somebody Put Something in my Drink”?  Probably not.  An early recording from the influential Blues legend.  By the way, Johnny Winter later covered this song.

“Bring Me Some Water” by Matt King from Raw

Another nifty song from Nashville songwriter Matt King.

“Inez In Zazan” by Shabbadoo from Pajama

Another song from the Pajama album by Memphis’ Shabbadoo. A nice, chill groove for a morning walk in the cool air.

Old-time folk artist Dom Flemons with his take on the popular folk standard.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – The Unanswered Mix

I discovered that there is another music blog out there called Ear to the Ground.  I really don’t have a problem with this…  I mean for all I know they are perfectly decent folks who write about perfectly decent music.  I do worry about my readers getting confused, so as a public self-service, I would like to use today’s shuffle as handy guide how to tell #E2TG from any other blogs with similar sounding names.

“Circling the Drain” by Matt King from Raw

Matt King is based in Nashville.  His new band Killing Streets happens to feature Matthew and Livia from our band of the year The End Men. I am really looking forward to the next record, and I hope tons of other music blogs – including other blogs with names like #E2TG – jump all over the music.  But, you know you are on the REAL Ear to the Ground when you see a track featured from Matt’s 2009 stripped down album Raw which I rescued from a thrift shop CD bin last weekend.

“The Unanswered Question” by Charles Ives (composer) from The Works of Charles Ives

I am going to go out on a limb and say the other “ear to the ground” blogs would not transition from Matt King’s unique take on traditional country music to a 100+ year old composition by Insurance executive turned composer Charles Ives.  I came to know the music of Ives from a music appreciation class in college. My appreciation of music pre-dates the class, but then as now, I am always seeking to expand my musical range and knowledge.

“Everything I Have is Broken” by Aaron Lee Tasjan from Crooked River Burning

Coming back to Nashville.  I don’t know if the other homonymous blogs have written about Aaron Lee Tasjan, but if not they should.  I really dig this song, and if you are reading this on the day I’m writing it, and you are in Nashville- then you should head over to The 5 Spot tonight for Tasjan’s Happy Hour of Power.  If you go, tell ’em the “REAL” Ear to the Ground sent you.*

“Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye” (Live) by Humming House from Humming House Party!

Sticking to local music and jumping into a jaunty reel from Humming House’s recent live album.  I’m willing to wager a nominal sum* that the writer(s) of those other closely named blogs can’t say that I have seen Humming House singer Leslie Rodriguez sing John Prine in a church café.

“Play in the Sunshine” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

It is conceivable that some other blog called Ear to the Ground may include a song from Prince’s first album without the Revolution in a post….

“Hot Thing” by Prince from Sign O’ The Times

…but will they include two songs in a row from that album?  If they do, please e-mail me a link.  By the way, it occurred to me that these two songs – although not adjacent on the album – do go well together.  As in, you play in the sunshine, and you will be a hot thing.  Get it?  I dare “other” Ear to the Ground to come up with something that clever.

“My Country Song” by The Grey A from My Country

A great way to start the morning off.  I freaking love this song, and this album.  Remember this? No Depression!

“Talk to God” by Tim Carroll from Opening Up/Look Out!

One of my favorite songs, but as my friend Lindsay says, all of Tim’s songs are hits…  Gonna miss him tonight at Fran’s (Columbus, Ohio – he’s all yours for tonight – don’t miss out!) but super-stoked to see Darrin and my friend Zach Red playing there. Fun starts at 9:00.  Tim will be back in time for his weekly Happy Hour at The Five Spot.

“Millennial Backlash” by The Jason Drug Reaction from Down on the Pharmacy

This song makes me want to slam dance.  I like songs that make me want to slam dance.  I also like songs that make me want to slam dance that have great hooks.  This one has a great hook!  The Jason in the bands name is Jason Krug of The Grimm Generation.  Dig it! 

“Been to the Deep” by Linear North from The Entrée (Built4BBQ Sampler)/Singles

When The End Men passed through Nashville last month, I got my hands on the latest compilation from the Upstate New York-based collective Built4BBQ.  I dig just about everything they put out, and I love Linear North.  They are from Albany, NY, and play some awesome Psych Blues…

Two in a row from the Built4BBQ folks.  Some old school PUNK Rock is just what the doctor ordered!  From what I can tell, they are underground in the very essence of the word – no Facebook, no website, no damn Twitter – but just based upon this track, I can tell you that they ROCK!  If you ever happen to be in Upstate New York and find out they are playing – then get yourself there right away!

Another track from Heath McNease.  I really like this song about distance and geography and change.

“Danglin'” by Hugh Trimble from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen – Section 5/neighborpoem

Another New York state based musical collective that never fails to deliver the goods – This Section 5 from Mama Coco’s just keeps offering up great song after great song.  Hugh Trimble is currently based in Chicago, but recorded this song at Mama Coco’s.  I really, really love this song, and my next order of business is to grab some more music from Hugh Trimble.  It’s Indie Folk of the highest caliber.  Dig it!

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Mixed Up, Muddled Up, Shook Up Mix

It’s been dreary few days in Nashville, and my mood has matched the weather.  Music always helps…  Here is today’s dose…

“Lola” (live) by The Kinks from Come Dancing With the Kinks (The Best of the Kinks 1977-1986)/

I liked this song before I knew what it was about.  I liked this song after I knew what it was about. 

“Pilgrimage to Aunt Virginia’s” by Minton Sparks from Middlin’ Sisters

Minton Sparks has such a compelling voice (both in the writing sense and in the speaking sense). The setting and descriptions and characters paint a very clear picture of the story being told.

“Why Feel?” by Heath McNease from Fort Wayne (Songs Inspired by the Film)

Music inspired by Heath McNease’s crowd-funded new film Fort Wayne.

“Far From Over” by The Slang from The Slang EP

A song from the self-titled debut EP by The Slang from Columbus, Ohio. My first listen.  It’s strong alternative rock, and I definitely want to hear more.

“This Hell is Where We Belong” (live) by Humming House from Humming House Party!

Another track from the live album recently released by Nashville-based Humming House.  This high-energy Americana band from Nashville now features the powerhouse vocals of Ms. Leslie Rodriguez.

“Halomaya” by Shabbadoo from Pajama

A trippy, instrumental groove straight out of Memphis.

“Light erases the thought” by Fred Frith from $100 Guitar Project

Another excellent track from the $100 Guitar Project.  This one features legendary guitarist Fred Frith (Henry Cow etc.).  With the previous track in today’s shuffle – we have over nine minutes of glorious instrumental music to start of the day.  Nice.  The related  video we found is some good fun, too.  Fred Frith along with John French (Captain Beefheart), Henry Kaiser, and Richard Thompson doing a unique version of the Beach Boys’  Surfin’ U.S.A.

Warren Pash co-wrote “Private Eyes” – the Hall and Oates hit song.  He is also an amazing singer/songwriter now based in Nashville. This song comes from his 2007 album Plastic Rulers.  The video is from a show at East Nashville hotspot The Family Wash and features Warren Pash playing with Rolling Stones collaborators Nanette Workman and Bobby Keys.

I’ve knew a girl named Julie.  Actually, I’ve known and know a lot of girls and women named Julie in my life. None of them have anything to do with this song, so I’m not sure why I’m mentioning it.  I do need to say, that Darrin’s weekly Wednesday night gig at Fran’s Eastside Tavern keeps getting better and better.

Vinyl Thief were our Band of the Month way back in July 2012 when we still had Bands of the Month.  Fun facts: Vinyl Thief are from Nashville, way back in 2012 we featured them in a post that also included Darrin Bradbury’s old band Big Wilson River, and they once played the summer kick off party for my friend Hayden Coleman’s food truck – Moovers and Shakers. All that and “Pipes” is cool song and is featured on the recent Deer Head Music Indie Mixtape which we have been spinning of late.

“When I Was a Boy” by Dar Williams from The Honesty Room

I know I say this quite often, but truly this is one of my all time favorite, favorite songs. The first time I heard this song, I literally cried.

“Land of 1000 Girls” by Scruffy the Cat from Time Never Forgets – The Anthology (’86-’88)/High Octane Revival

Switching gears rapidly and harshly, we have some delicious 80s music from this legendary Boston band.

“Heart of Texas” by Taco Land from Heart of Texas

This was the song that first introduced me to Taco Land  (this and their amazing over of the Bowie song “Five Years”).  It was good to hear it again when I got it as a Free Download for buying an “Audrey Strong” bracelet (proceeds benefit St. Judes).  Sending out positive thoughts to Joseph, Audrey, and the whole Russell and extended Taco Land family.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Searchlight Sneeze Mix

Last night was another typical night in East Nashville – I heard an Americana artist who likes death metal and Taylor Swift (the awesome Todd Farrell), a folk song about Lynard Skynard and Van Halen (by the amazing Aaron Lee Tasjan), plus a stirring post-midnight rendition of “Silver Bells” via Tim Carroll and Darrin Bradbury.

Our shuffle today offers a stunning departure from the norm…. not that we really have a norm here at Ear to the Ground, but we do have a lot of new (to us) music.  It’s a short shuffle in terms of songs (two 7:00+ minute songs will do that), and we have two instrumentals.  Shall we?

“Searchlight” by Shabbadoo from Pajama

When I was just out of high school, a group of younger kids formed a band called The Imposers.  Of course, I looked down upon them because I was a college guy and they were still high school kids, but I can admit some nearly thirty years down the road that they impressed me.  I saw them play at the local Drama Center in Cookeville, Tennessee.  Video evidence exists of this show, but if it is on YouTube, I couldn’t find it.  Several of the Imposers still make music.  Doug Derryberry has been with Bruce Hornsby for years and has played with tons of other people including an appearance at this years Bonnaroo festival. Joey Pegram moved to Memphis and formed the amazing band Shabbadoo.  Randomly, I thought of him and that band last week and grabbed their 2006 album Pajama off of Bandcamp.

“Three Mirrors” by Haesemeyer from Three Mirrors

This one came to me via e-mail.  I try to listen to everything I get, but sometimes things slip through.  I’m glad this one didn’t.  I’m seriously digging this. John Haesmeyer is from San Francisco. His new Three Mirrors EP dropped on September 23, and we will have more from it coming soon.

“Servant, Job” by David Olney from When the Deal Goes Down

David Olney has an amazing band – I’m glad I got to see him a couple of times when he was doing some local shows here.  Ear to the Ground favorite Mark Robinson co-produced Mr. Olney’s latest release from which this cut is taken.  If you so choose, you can count this as your Bible lesson for the day…

“Bone Blue Moon” by Jim Dead from Ten Fires

Jim Dead comes all the way from Scotland with some fine Americana sounding music.  I grabbed this one off the latest Feel Bad for You mixtape, and like most of the music I get from those fine folks, it’s a excellent new discovery.  I will definitely be on the lookout for more music from Mr. Dead. Ten Fires is from 2011.  He has a more recent album which I will be checking out soon.
