As Nashville digs out from Snowpocalypse ’16 (with temperatures expected to rise to above 50 degrees today), it seems a good time to remind you that tonight is the FINAL NIGHT of the Darrin Bradbury Residency at The Basement East.  Roads should be much improved by the time tonight rolls around.  If you have made it out to the one or more of the first three weeks, I do not need to tell you…. if you haven’t, this is the last chance to experience the magic!  Guests tonight are Erin Rae, Rorey Carroll, and Steve Poltz!  Doors at 6:00p.m.  Music starts at 6:30p.m.   Go to the Pub if you need Grub before or after.  Do it!

“Frozen Out” by The Deadline Shakes

Appropriate song for a icy morning commute.  Another awesome track from the album Zealots by this catchy, cool band from Glascow (not Kentucky).

“Trap Door” by Seprona

Seprona are an indie pop/rock band from Liverpool.  They have a new album called, Trap Door due out on February 26, 2016.  This is the title track and my first listen, and I like what I hear so far.

“The Woman Who Got Old” by The Bishop’s Daredevil Stunt Club

This Chicago band have announced their latest album, Don’t Buy This Record.  The band will be giving away the album one song at a time through the end of 2016 when they will release the CD.  This is the first track which was released back in December.  They just released the second track today.  Head over to their bandcamp page to get in on this. 

“Mister Dragonfly” by Ben Lowry

Ben Lowry is the lead singer of the Nashville-based band Bang OK Bang which I have featured a few times on E2TG.  Ben just released new album called Somnium on January 18th, and he had a release show on the 21st at The East Room which I totally spaced on.  Mister Dragonfly is our first listen, and it is quite different from what I have heard of Bang OK Bang, and it is also quite good.  Check it out!

“Sad Clown” by Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies

Keeping it local… Brian Wright has been missed in East Nashville as he winters in Mexico with The Cordovas.  Los Angeles – do not miss them on February 9.  Nashville – mark your March calendar to make sure every Thursday is free (The Family Wash!) This is a track from the album Dog Ears.  Brian is simply put one of the best songwriters I know.

“This is What the Fuck Robster Craws Are” by Iced Ink

Iced Ink are part of the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen family.  They released their latest album Willie Nelson Prince last month.  You can also get a sticker book, and who doesn’t love a sticker book.  Get it for $6.66 at the band’s bandcamp page. The band is a three-piece instrumental rock band. This track is a face-melting, mind-blowing six minute jam.  Did I mention that it is instrumental – so all of the profanity is contained in the title and whatever words escape your mouth while you listen.

“Silence” by Bang Ok Bang

I mentioned Bang Ok Bang before, so it is only coincidentally fitting that we have an other track from their Live at East Nashville Underground album. 

“As I Make My Way” by Tymon Dogg

Another track and a life lesson from Made of Light the latest album from Tymon Dogg.

“More of a Man” by Brandy Zdan

Another track from Canadian born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Brandy Zdan from the sampler put out on Noisetrade last month.  The full self-titled album is available in the usual places. Highly recommended. This song was featured on the MTV series, Awkward.

We are back and ready to finish off 2015 in style. I hope everyone who celebrates it had a good Thanksgiving.

After fighting off a cold for several days, I ended up pretty knocked out by Friday. I’m on meds and making a recovering. Expect my live music updates to be few and far between the first part of the week, but I will be healthy for some fun stuff coming up at the end of the week.  More on that.

On a related note, between the cold and getting ready to and going out of town, I am WAY behind on e-mails and checking out music that has been submitted.  Please be patient, but feel free to shoot me a follow-up e-mail/message.

“It’s a Whisper” by James Roquemore

A confessional track from The First (EP).  I saw James open up Patrick Kinsley’s album release show earlier in the year, and I really dug his songs and his voice. I got hold of this EP that night.

“Nickel and a diamond” by Bob Lewis

The first time I saw Bob Lewis perform was opening up for (I think) Darrin Bradbury and Austin Lucas.  I downloaded his album NOw here… and have been digging it ever since. Coincidently, Austin Lucas will be back in Nashville Thursday along with Two Cow Garage and some other folks.  I intend to healthy by then.

“Two Day High” by Sugar and the Hi Lows

Amy Stroup and Trent Dabbs are established solo artists in their own right.  Both members of the Ten out of Tenn collective (I’m not sure if that is an on-going thing or not), after several co-writes, they formed Sugar and the Hi Lows  – which for a long time BandsinTown kept mistaking for Sugar (the defunct band formed by Bob Mould of Husker Du).  I have been a fan of Sugar and the Hi Lows for a few years – even naming them a featured artist back in 2012.  They had a pretty successful run since then.  I grabbed a sampler from Noisetrade a couple of months back  – so it is good to have them back in the shuffle.  This track is from their 2012 self-titled album – so maybe I wrote about it back them????

“Chemicals Pt. 1 and 2” by Bang Ok Bang

Our fourth Nashville band/artist to start of the week.  This is from live album recorded at East Nashville Underground.  I love all kinds of music, but I never complain when I have some good loud, hard, nasty music show up in my shuffle.  Mixing chemicals can be a dangerous thing… but rock and roll is supposed to be dangerous, so here is “Chemicals Pt. 1 and 2” combined in one dangerous track. 

“Dead as It Gets” by Joe Mansman and the Midnight Revival Band

Long time Ear to the Ground readers may remember Joe Mansman from his old band The Cosmonauts.  They were a featured band and we did an interview with them and premiered a video back in the day.   When that band finished it’s run, Joe moved on with a new project that has evolved, changed names, and which has just released a new album as Joe Mansman and the Midnight Revivial Band.  The album is called Too Far Gone.  It is some really awesome rootsy Outlaw American Rock and Roll from the Upstate New York area.  I just got hold of this album right before my cold and the holiday hit, so I’ve just had time to hear a couple of songs, but this is a good one.  Expect to read much more about this band and this album soon.

“Looks Like I’m Up Shit Creek Again” by Tom Waits

Seems like a good time to mention that Saturday night is the 10th Annual: Tom Waits Tribute and Benefit for Second Harvest Food Bank (Get Behind the Mule). My friend Mary Sack is the organizer and I had total blast last year.  An all-star cast of amazing artists cover Tom Waits’ songs all night, a visual artist does a live painting, fun is had, money is raised.  Maybe someone will dig out this chestnut that was released on The Early Years Volume One.  Far different sound than Waits later musical forays.

“Hailing Wide” by Tom House

From one Tom to another.  Coincidently (or not), I was introduced to Tom House by the same Mary Sack who is organizing the Tom Waits benefit.  This is another track from Songs Like Dreams… More Like Blood.

“Joan of Arc” (Version 2) by Thrushes

We close out today’s shuffle with some Shoegaze music from the Baltimore, Maryland band, Thrushes.  This is from Exposing Seas – which is the band’s first album in around five years. As I always say when I post songs by band’s that are described as “Shoegaze” – don’t ask me to explain or define the term, but for the most part I usually dig the music, and this is certainly no exception.

Welcome to the working week….   Heading into an unusual week – I am off Wednesday – before that I have a busy week, after that I have a busy week.  Wednesday will probably we busy, too.

Friday night, I saw two Jon’s at The Family Wash. First Jon Byrd and then Jon Langford. Very different sets, but both offering unique and interesting takes on Country music.  In between, I got to spend a little time with some East Nashville friends at my friend Bob’s birthday bash.

Saturday night, Human Radio at The 5 Spot (they are in the shuffle today so more later about that), and then to the Wash again for Lisa Oliver Gray’s birthday show. The amazing singer had a killer band that included Tommy Womack and Ross Rice (of Human Radio) among others.

Tonight, back to the Wash again for a stellar night of music featuring Brock Zeman with Blair Hogan and Darrin Bradbury featuring Megan Palmer.  Starts at 7:00 – you do not want to miss it.  Later, Brian Wright is playing the Basement with a killer band and with Lilly Hiatt and Jesse Lafser opening.

“Chapel Hill Boogie” by John Dee Holeman

Via the Music Maker Relief Foundation – some Piedmont Blues from one of the living legends of the style.

“The Bridges I’ve Burned” by Reckless Johnny Wales

Another great track from American Heart.  I love some of the lines of this song.  Reckless Johnny is one of those larger than life musical figures who you can see quite often around Nashville. 

“Table Rock” by Angela Easterling

One of my personal favorites from Angela Easterling’s Common Law Wife album. 

“Above the Surface” by Bang OK Bang

From a live album recorded at an East Nashville Underground show… Bang OK Bang are a sludgy hard rocking band from Nashville. This song and this recording remind me so much of the independent, local music I grew up listening to… but it is thoroughly modern in all the best ways, which makes it doubly exciting to me.

“Harder to Lie” (Live at Eastside Manor) by David Ramirez

Sticking with recordings made on the east side of Nashville… This recording by Austin-based singer-songwriter David Ramirez sounds gorgeous and it’s a great song, too.

“Electromagnetism” by Human Radio

As I mentioned, I got to take in the Human Radio show this past Saturday night.  They did a good job mixing their classic tracks with some material from their forthcoming new album. The new songs sounded great.  The thing I have always loved about this band is their ability to combine instruments in a unique way and their ability to hit a groove like very few bands can do.  Fun show!  Great music.  Get ready for the new album, and in the mean time, seek out their classic self-titled album which includes this song and tons of other great ones.

“Fly Me Courageous” by Drivin’ n Cryin’ with Audley Freed

Someone here in town, dubbed this past summer as the Summer of Kevn Kinney.  Kinney made several notable appearances around town including a month-long residency at The 5 Spot.  Audley Freed (Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow) joined for at least one of those shows. Kinney will be back in Nashville December 5 with his band Drivin’ n Cryin’.  Warner Hodges will filling the guitar slot and Jason Isbell guitarist Sadler Vaden is the special guest.  I don’t know if Audley Freed will be in town, but if he is, I would not be surprised if he jumped on stage… maybe for this song which was one of the legendary Georgia band’s best known songs and the title track to their 1991 album.

“Minutes Into Hours” by Katie Mac

Katie Mac is a 20 year old singer-songwriter from Liverpool. I really dig this track which I could not find anywhere on-line, but here is a link to her Facebook page if you want to check her out.

“Airstream Transmission” (Live) by Leland Sundries

We close things out with another track from Brooklyn band, Leland Sundries. The song is on a live album called Live at the Creamery.  Check them out!

“Two Sad Tales” by Bang OK Bang

The first of two songs in the shuffle from the Nashville-based Heavy Rockers. This is from a recently release live album – Live at East Nashville Underground. It was recorded at The East Room back in the spring. Bringing some heaviness into the shuffle for a Thursday of what has been a pretty crappy week so far…

“The Matador” by Gretchen Peters

The always amazing Nashville singer-songwriter with a track from her 2012 album, Hello Cruel World.  By the way, the title song from the album is my default ringtone – kind of a pessimistic view of calls from numbers I generally don’t know.

“Time Heals” by Gear Daddies

Another track from the album Billy’s Live Bait… “You should smoke those goddamn cigarettes…”

“All the Lonely People Left Behind” by Bang OK Bang

The second track of the day from the live album. I really dig this song a bunch. 

“Ambition” by Velvet Elvis

Velvet Elvis were a band from Lexington, Kentucky that caught the attention of Mitch Easter (of Let’s Active) whose production credits included the early albums by R.E.M. Through Easter, the band caught the attention of Enigma Records which released the Easter produced self-titled album in 1988.  Great to hear this song again.

“Amazing Grace” by Cora Fluker

From the Music Maker Relief Foundation… A stirring and powerful version of the spiritual classic sung by the late singer who was born in Alabama around 1920.

“Wehmut” by Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe

Our second listen from the album I Declare Nothing by Canadian singer and the founding member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.  Good stuff…

“Physics of Form” by The Vigilance Committee

Time to close out this Thursday shuffle with a track from Exit a Hero from the Progressive rock band from Long Island.
