It’s been a weird week filled with annoyingly insignificant snow “events”, a day off, a significant life event, just one (so far) live music night, and some pretty cool shuffles…

“Benedikt’s Blues” by Steve Wynn

Whether as a member of the Dream Syndicate, as 1/2 of Danny and Dusty, as part of The Baseball Project, or just as Steve Wynn – Steve Wynn’s music has been a significant part of my music universe for a very long time.  This song is the title track from a recent release which is a “Sonic Companion to Season 4 of Dag”.  “Dag” being a Norwegian television series.   This track features Wynn’s wife Linda Pitmon and Scott McCaughey (both of The Baseball Project).

“Radar” by Brian Wright

From the Café Rooster Sessions Vol 1 – the most recent release by Brian Wright.  I am looking forward to seeing Wright open for Dan Baird and Homemade Sin on Sunday at The Basement East.

“Parents” by SuperCrashingStar

A whimsical tune and our second listen to this New York band. I am really digging their music.

“Cross Paths” by Brian Keenan

Our second Brian in the shuffle, this one is a singer, songwriter from Brooklyn.  His latest album is called Fits and Starts. A really good tune.

“She’s the One” by Bruce Springsteen

The studio version from Born to Run.  Fun fact, I sometimes peek ahead to see what the next song (after the last) in a shuffle would have been and to see how it might have changed the overall tone of the shuffle.  Today, had the shuffle continued past the Killing Kuddles song below, the next song would have been a live version of this song from the Chicago show.

“Be My Enemy” by The Waterboys

Another track from the classic This is the Sea album.  “If you’ll be my enemy, I’ll be your enemy, too.”

From Sinking Ships.  Shhh…. don’t tell Elwood’s mother, but I hear he has a dirty mouth.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Mixed Up Kid Mix

Very quickly…

Does it make me old that I still sometimes think of Infidels as a recent Bob Dylan album?  On second thought don’t answer that.  Anyway, we start today with “Jokerman” by Dylan

“Never Loved You” by Nava Hotel – some awesome ROCK from Nashville

“Run Away West” by Holidaysburg (A Florida Rock n Roll band that existed from 2004 to 2008)

“In the Rain” by The Danbury Lie (One of our favorite albums released this year.  I still don’t know the name of the album… is it “?” or the weird name that Amazon has listed?  Maybe they will tell me…)

“Tears Won’t Help” by Steve Wynn and the Dragon Bridge Orchestra (Live in Brussels.  A newer recording of a song from Wynn’s 1990 solo debut Kerosene Man.  I got to see Steve Wynn live during a tour sponsored by Ben and Jerry’s and also featuring Exene and Gregson and Collister. I kind of dig everything Wynn has done – from Dream Syndicate to Danny and Dusty to Baseball Project to his solo work.)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Life on Mars Mix

Shhhh…. sit back and don’t worry…. I’m gonna tell you all a story, it goes a little something like this….  

 Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view

We live in a universe of wonders and mysteries, but we so often stay locked in our tiny chambers of supposed security.  Through open the door, take that tentative step into the semi-darkness.  There is a world of wonder and a life to be lead. Fear is rarely useful. Bad stuff happens, but it’s just part of the deal, part of the thrill and the appeal.  I am a noble coward with big ideas, and yet… and yet, when I step outside my place of ease and rest, and I open myself up… it is only when I experience joy and pain and disappointment and triumph and humiliation that I am truly.  This is your day, what are you going to do….

This morning, the shuffle comes from a playlist, I like to call Revolving Random.  It’s actually more arbitrary than random, but whatever.  I created a playlist of 100 songs chosen just because – no theme, new songs, old songs, band’s I’ve featured, novelties, classics… every time, I post a shuffle from this playlist, I replace the songs played with some new ones to keep the playlist at 100.  Here is today’s shuffle:

First up, we have Tori Amos from her 1994 album Under the Pink which was recorded in Taos, New Mexico. Our song today is Pretty Good Year.

Next up we have a song from Mike Watt’s solo debut, Ball Hog or Tugboat? The album was a star-studded affair.  Today’s track, called Piss-Bottle Man features Evan Dando (Lemonheads) on vocals.

I got such a tradition.
I keep in my truck cab.

 
   
Next up, we have a cover of a Blood on the Tracks era Bob Dylan song. This version of  Simple Twist of Fate is taken off the soundtrack to the 2007 motion picture, I’m Not There and features Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo fame (in case you didn’t know who Jeff Tweedy was).

And finally, we have The Medicine Show from the classic Dream Syndicate album called simply Medicine Show. Dream Syndicate – featuring Steve Wynn (Danny and Dusty/Baseball Project) – were a very influential California-based Paisley Underground band. 

But I know that it’s hard to be a decent man

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Give It an 8 Mix

It seems like there is so much sadness (loss, transitions, illness) in the world and among my closer circle of friends. Sending out warm thoughts and love to the world, and I hope some rains on you if you need it.

Just found out last night that early Band of the Week and good friends of the blog, Inner City Elegance are calling it quits.  I don’t have any details, but we wish them well in whatever future endeavors those three guys take on.  Here’s a video of an acoustic version of one my favorite ICE songs, Never Let You Down.

RIP to Dick Clark, Levon Helm and Greg Ham (Men at Work)…

We begin with a cover song.  It’s Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Baseball Project) doing a lovely slow version of A Million Miles Away  The Plimsouls’ song and one of my all-time favcs… Wynn’s version is on the must-have Peter Case tribute (A Case for Case)

Our second song comes from San Francisco punk legends Flipper.  It’s Life is Cheap from their Generic Album.
