From the Freedom Highway Complete recording which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of The Staple Singers legendary 1965 performance at Chicago’s New Nazareth Church, comes this recording of the traditional song. The song was notably covered by the Grateful Dead.

“Like Flies On Sherbert” by Alex Chilton

The title track from Alex Chilton’s 1979 debut solo album – produced by Chilton and Jim Dickinson and recorded and Ardent and Sam Phillips Studios in Memphis.

“Why Won’t You Love Me” by Bare Jr.

The last listed track on the 1998 album Boo-Tay.  I was fortunate enough to see the most recent Bare Jr. reunion show at The Basement East a few months back, and it was a blast!   Bobby Bare Jr. is currently touring as a member of Guided by Voices.

“Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar” by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen

From the 1971 debut album by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen called Lost in the Ozone.  Their version of the 1940 song that was written by Don Raye and first recorded by the Will Bradley Orchestra.  I think this song first came into my consciousness via The Rainmakers’ song, “Let My People Go-Go” which references the title.

“Spotted Bird” by Kalyn Fay

Another track from that Oklahoma Room CD that I mentioned yesterday.  This song is from the forthcoming album, Bible Belt.  I really dig this song.

“Imaginary Certainty” by Bashful Hips

And we close things out with another track from the new Bashful Hips’ album. There is something I really like about the meditative qualities on this album.

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle – No Secrets To Reveal Mix

As I predicted, last night was fun.  Tim Carroll, Tommy Womack, Jon Byrd, Joe Nolan, and Andrew Adkins put on one of the best and most diverse songwriter events I have seen in a long time – at The Country.  They are all excellent songwriters coming from different backgrounds and working in and out of different genres or styles of music, and together they represented well the rich tapestry of Music City.

In a rare moment of perfect timing, I had just enough time to say my goodbyes at The Country, and I made my way to The 5 Spot for Sara Syms, Carrie Welling, and Lindsay Ellyn.  Sara Syms sounded fantastic as always with her excellent band. 

Carrie Welling (who I had seen once before) has some great songs and an amazing voice. She was backed by a guitar player. 

It has been a little while since I had seen Lindsay Ellyn doing a full band show, and it was every bit as good as I remember it.  Her song, “Glory, Glory” became a joyous sing-a-long.

Beyond all the hype, the truth remains that there is a ton of great music going on just about every night in Nashville.

Tonight , I recommend Darrin Bradbury at Little Harpeth Taproom, Fats Kaplin with guest Paul Burch at The 5 Spot, Beet Root Revival at The Basement,  and The Cordovas at The Family Wash.  While, it is logistically impossible to hit all of these shows, I highly recommend any of them.

“Yesterday’s Wine” by Willie Nelson

As I think I mentioned, I recently read Michael Streissguth’s excellent book Outlaw: Waylon, Willie, Kris, and The Renegades of Nashville.  Inspired, I added a bunch of Waylon, Willie, and Kris to my playlist.  Here is Willie with the title track to his 1971 concept album.

“Good Hearted Woman” by Waylon Jennings

Speaking of Waylon, Willie and Kris.  This song was written by Waylon and Willie in 1969, and it was released as the title track to his 1972 album.  There are a lot of interesting comparisons to be made to what has happening musically in Nashville in the early 1970s and what is happening musically in Nashville today.

“The Anchor” by Minutemen

By early Minutemen standards, The Anchor is an epic. Clocking in at 2:30, it is the longest song on their second album What Makes a Man Start Fires?

“Our Lips Are Sealed” by Fun Boy Three

This song was written by Jane Wiedlin and Terry Hall.  Wiedlin’s band, The Go-Go’s released the song first – it was the debut single by the California All-Female band.  Hall’s short-lived but highly successful band, Fun Boy Three released this version of the song in 1983 as a single from the band’s second and final album, The Waiting.  The Fun Boy Three version was a bigger hit in the UK than The Go-Go’s version.

“Skeleton Crew” by Webb Wilder

Another from Hybrid Vigor, Wilder’s 1989 album.  Wilder is still very active today, and his most recent album, Mississippi Moderne has received wide-spread critical acclaim.

“Crunch” by Pylon

From Pylon’s 1990 album, Chain which was recorded following the band’s reformation in 1989.  The band has originally broken up in 1983, but experienced a resurgence due to R.E.M.’s  cover of their song, Crazy, on the Dead Letter Office compilation and numerous mentions in the documentary Athens, Ga: Inside Out.

“Withered and Died” by Richard and Linda Thompson

Richard and Linda Thompson made some amazing music back in the day.  This song was from their classic 1974 album, I Want to See the Bright Light’s Tonight. It was later covered by Elvis Costello (released as a Bonus Track for the 1995 CD Release of his 1984 album Goodbye Cruel World).

“Even Cowgirls Get the Blues” by Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings

Rodney Crowell wrote this song – inspired by Tom Robbins 1976 novel.  Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings released the song on their 1986 album, Heroes. Another one, I downloaded after reading the Outlaw book.

“Don’t Look At Me” by Gear Daddies

From their 1990 album, Billy’s Live Bait. In a serendipitous moment, the band are kicking off a reunion tour in Sioux Falls, South Dakota tonight.

“Deacon Jones” by Louis Jordan

I am currently reading a book called The Chitlin Circuit and the Road to Rock and Roll by Preston Lauterbach.  Inspired by that, I have added some songs by artists mentioned in that book.  This song by “The King of the Jukebox” goes back to 1944.

Sad to hear the news yesterday that Billy Zoom the legendary guitarist of Los Angeles band X was diagnosed with bladder cancer.  Happy, though, to report that a GoFundMe campaign to help him out has almost been completely funded after just one day.  If you want to help push it over the top, here is

We reached the end of another work week, and we have a pretty interesting shuffle to close things out…

By the way, a couple of songs in the shuffle today prompt me to issue the reminder that I repeat every so often.  Each morning’s shuffle is randomly selected by my music player from a Playlist that I create and maintain. 


“One I Love” by Kevin Gordon

Nashville is a town of songwriters.  One of our best, is Kevin Gordon.  I feel fortunate that I have had several opportunities to see him over the last month or so, and he never disappoints.  This song goes back to his 2012 album Gloryland.

 

“Waitress” by Hop Along

Hop Along are an indie folk band from Philadelphia. This song is from their album called Painted Shut and the recording is from one of the World Café sessions.  I am interested in hearing more from this band.

“Another Planet” by Human Radio

Another track from the self-titled album by the Memphis/Nashville band who reformed last year and who are trying to raise funding for a comeback album.  Visit their Facebook page for more information.  By the way, the band is making a return trip to the town where they were formed tonight.  If you are in Memphis, check it out.

“Communist Daughter” by Atticus Floyd

Another awesome track from the album Russell Stover Stole My Babbie (sic). Since, we last posted an Atticus Floyd song, they have added a video to the You Tube universe.  It is a cover of the Neutral Milk Hotel song “Engine” and features Atticus with Hayden and Evan from The Foresters.

“Weakness Was Always Your Strength” by The Transcendents

Our friends from Down Under (New Zealand to be more precise and Christchurch to be even more precise), The Transcendents, just released a new EP called “Lay Where You Collapse”.  In order to make room for that EP, we need to clear out some space (not really), but to get you ready for a flood of posts  from the new EP, here is a track from their self-titled debut album. Two bits of trivia/important info: 1. The new EP includes  a cover of a Will Oldham song from before he was Bonnie Prince Billy and 2. The Transcendents and I share a mutual love of early (and very late) R.E.M.

“Ahull” by Loscil

Loscil are an ambient band from Vancouver, B.C.  This track comes to us from a sampler associated with the Big Ears Festival held in Knoxville, TN – earlier this year.

“It’s All Going to Pot” by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard

If the Shuffle was not random, some might think I posted this song because it happens to be Willie Nelson’s granddaughter Raelyn Nelson’s birthday, but the shuffle is random… so it is in retrospect that I dedicate this song to Ms. Nelson.  Also, I was talking about this song with a friend just a couple of nights ago.  Again just a coincidence.

“Pancho and Lefty” by Mike Thomas

Never a band thing to close out a week of shuffles with a Townes Van Zandt song.  I’ve kind of lost touch with Mike Thomas, but if you ever see him playing around Dickson or Nashville, check him out.

Joe Nolan back in the shuffle.  I really dig this song. The video is from his appearance at the East Side Invasion at Bobby’s Idle Hour a couple of weeks back.  I was there. From his EP called King.

Old school Georgia Satellites.  Released on In the Land of Salvation and Sin.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Beat the Drum Mix

I had the opportunity to add tons of songs to the active playlist from whence we draw the daily mixes which we present to you, loyal reader. As always, I try to get a good healthy mix of new stuff, rare old stuff, classic old stuff and random oldish/newish stuff or whatever strikes my fancy.  This morning’s Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle strikes a not-so-delicate balance between genres and eras.  Give the people what they want… I don’t know if I did that.  Give the people what I want? Probably closer to the truth (with the capriciousness of the random shuffle function).

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Dr. Dr., Give Me the News Mix

Reminder: Voting for the March Band of the Month ends at 8:00pm Central Time on Friday April 13.  Vote now.  The poll is on the sidebar to the left.  Here are the details.

Where is the Band of the Week?  Due to the holiday, the Band of the Month, a top secret project and general laziness. I made an executive decision to forgo the Band of the Week post for this past week.  It’s certainly not from lack on great bands.  I just wanted to be sure to give the selected band the attention they deserve.  Look for a Band of the Week post after the Band of the Month poll closes.

Record Store Day is now just 10 days away.  Go here to find the participating location near you.  Here in Nashville Grimey’s New and Pre-Loved Music has a pretty killer line-up of live music.  JEFF the Brotherhood, PUJOL, Langhorne Slim, The Grenadines, Kansas Bible Company and Lovedrug have been announced so far.

To the songs for today:

First up, POP ETC is Morning Benders. Got that?  We posted a link to the Morning Benders up top.  The first album as POP ETC is due out later this year, but right now, you can grab a free download of a Mixtape from the band’s website.  The song we have today is from that mixtape and it is called Halfway to Heaven.

After that, we have two rather interesting cover songs.

The first song is a cover of Willie Nelson’s Time of the Preacher a track from the Red Headed Stranger album.  The cover is by the late, great Johnny Cash from the Twisted Willie tribute album.

Finally, a cover of one of the “lost” songs by the Velvet Underground which was finally released in the mid 80s on VU (which was when I had my mind opened and blown by Lou Reed and company). Foggy Notion is covered by Echo & the Bunnymen on volume 2 of the Heaven & Hell Velvet Underground tribute series. The Heaven & Hell series of albums was compiled as Unpiecing the Jigsaw.
