WOW Wednesday Music Shuffle – On My Own Mix

As we do pretty much every Wednesday, we dig into the well that is the music currently residing on my phone’s memory, and we hit “shuffle” and let the chips fall where they may…  Today’s shuffle yields a nice mix of different styles of music which makes sense only to people like me…

Shall we?

“Douchebags on Parade” by Mudhoney from Vanishing Point

Somebody made some kind of dick move on the road in front of me while this song was playing.  I have no memory of this happening, but I was driving in Nashville, so it’s a good bet… anyway, a rockin’ tune from the veteran Seattle Grunge band’s 9th and latest album.

“Most People” by Dawes from Stories Don’t End

We live, contained in our skins, filled with aspirations and self-doubt and all kinds of crap, and we some how think we are all alone.  The truth, though, is quite different.

“Black Cat Bone” by !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js Hat Fitz and Cara Robinson from Beauty ‘n the Beast

“Aussie bluesman and Irish Songstress get married, form a band and make great music together. This shabby hill country blues oozes cool”. Guitar & Bass Magazine
I should have known Popa Tune’s was already all over this… hell, he’s probably my source. The duo released a new album this past May. This is from their 2010 album…

“Can’t Get Over You” by Kevin Jenkins from Step Inside

I think we featured this just a few weeks ago, but that’s the way WOW Wednesday’s work. It’s some silky smooth soul jazz sounds from NYC and the True Groove label.

“On My Own” by Year of October from Stories

E2TG favorites, Year of October are a couple of months away from the release of their new album Golden Days.  They just released the first single called “Gone” complete with a ninjatastic video.  We kick in with a song from their earlier release Stories.

“Myth” by Beach House from Loss Opportunity: The 2012 Sub Pop Records Sampler/Bloom

Dream Pop duo Beach House join the WOW Wednesday hysterics with the first release off their 2012 album Bloom.  It’s dreamy and poppy…

“Hope and Promise” by prattle on, rick from Some Quiet Majesty

Another Nashville-based E2TG favorite is prattle on, rick.  This is from his latest album, and I think it is one of the bonus songs you can get from downloading the album.

“Deperate Hand” by Garrison Starr from Relive (NoiseTrade Version)

Garrison Starr has been making some great music for a number of years.  This song is from a 2012 live album recorded at 12th and Porter here in Nashville.

WOW Wednesday Shuffle – Shook Up Mix

A wonderfully diverse mixed bag of treats for your Wide-Open Whatever Wednesday Shuffle….

“There’s Always Money in the Banana Stand” by Bridge Under Fire from The Appetizer (Build4BBQ Sampler)/Why Wait?
Some invigorating punk rock and roll from Upstate New York – part of the awesome Build4BBQ collective.

“Stockholm” by Jason Isbell from Southeastern
Ex-Drive By Trucker and one of the hottest commodities on the Americana/Alt-Country scene.  From his most recent album. (Time for a new one?)

“Shake, Shake, Shake” by Bronze Radio Return from A Bit of Bronze/Shake!, Shake!, Shake!

Connecticut Indie Folksters Bronze Radio Return with a cool song and the title track from their 2011 album.

“May” by prattle on, rick from A Decade Begins
A little taste of the now seemingly long gone Spring from Nashville-based prattle on, rick.  From a fan club exclusive instrumental album covering a whole year month by month.
“Nowhere” by Tipi Valley from Rock ‘n Roll Lives On (EP)
We close it out going back to the 2013 EP from our friend from Swansea Wales.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Real Live Wire Mix

Okay – how many #E2TG readers watched the Grammys last night?  What did you think? Were there parts you liked? Was it all utter crap? How well did it represent the state of music from October 2012 – September 2013?  Seriously? Really? Was it worst than you could imagine or better than you expected?

So here’s the thing, for as long as I can remember, The Grammy’s have been completely out of touch with the music I like. Or at least a decade too late. That being said, there were a few parts of last nights broadcast that were okay.

Here’s the thing, regardless of your opinion of the Grammys, the fact is that every night of the week in clubs and small venues all across the country, indie artists are creating memorable moments playing a huge variety of music. Many of these bands and artists do not get the hype or press that your Grammy “caliber” performers get. Nonetheless, they aren’t that hard to find. Take the time, seek them out, and regularly read music blogs like Ear to the Ground (or just read Ear to the Ground if I may ever so humbly suggest.)

Anyway, we have a shuffle filled with interest music that you may or may not have heard about.  Check these artists out and see what appeals to you…

“Written in the Snow” by The Autumn Defense

“Momentum” by Left of Logic

“Mallrats” by The Orwells

“January” by prattle on, rick.

“Psycho Killer” (Talking Heads Cover) by Cage the Elephant

“The Delicious” by The Plum Magnetic

“and the Hippos Are Burning in Their Tanks” by HIPPIECULT

“No Drama” by Solardrive (feat. TC and Kevin Hicks)

“Sugar Dyed Honey Pants” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones

“Call Your Girlfriend” (Robyn cover) by Lucy Wainwright Roche

“Free Freedom” by Joseph Arthur

NOTES:

The Autumn Defense song is from a Noisetrade Eastside Manor Session recorded here in Nashville (East Nashville to be precise).

After seeing their recent performance on David Letterman, I just had to add The Orwells to the mix.

A seasonally appropriate instrumental song for a blustery January morning – from Nashville’s own prattle on, rick.

A fun live cover of the Talking Heads classic by Cage the Elephant (who happen to come from Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz’s home state.)

HIPPIECULT from Philly make their E2TG debut with a song from their demo release. BTW, the song title actually begins with an ampersand (“and sign”), however, ampersands mess up the formatting of blog posts, so I have to spell out “and”

Some soulful funkiness from Solardrive (featuring drum ‘n’ bass artist TC and hip-hop artist Kevin Hicks), and also from Birmingham Alabama’s St. Paul and (ampersand) the Broken Bones

A cool cover of a Robyn song by a New York based singer with a fine musical pedigree, Lucy Wainwright Roche (she is the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche of The Roches).

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – A Few of Favorite Things 2013 Mix – Part Two

First of all… Tuesday? Really? Just Tuesday?

Second… how about a couple of my favorite Christmas songs…

Third… Rest in Peace to Mr. Ray Price. In seeing some of the news reports, I was most struck at how his voice held up into his late 70s/early 80s. So smooth…  Thanks for the music.

Now… to today’s music…

Our journey back through some favorites from the year that will soon enough be ending…  Shuffle style…

“It’s All Wrong” by The End Men

“I Should Have Listened” and “Today is Gonna Be a Better Day” by You and Me

“Stuck” by The Coal Men

“Double Brahma” by Valued Customer

“The Flame” by prattle on, rick

“Bloodhound” by Jeanette Lynne

“Muskegon Harbor” by Taco Land

“Sailing Stones” by Monks of Mellonwah

“Daddy Fool (Svelt Mix)” by Tipi Valley (from Rock ‘n Roll Lives On)

“Love Doesn’t Mind” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza)

“Two Weeks on the Ocean” by James the Giant (from James the Giant)

“Broken Heartland” by The Coal Men (from Escalator)

“Onward” by The Danbury Lie (from ?)

“Modern Lives” by Taco Land (from Pancakes and Pizza)

“The Hoover Farm Exorcism” by The Imperial Rooster (from Cluckaphony)

Highlights:

The End Men – of course.

You and Me (glad to receive some music this year from one of the bands we’ve been following for a long time.  Also glad to have two songs in a row from that album in today’s shuffle)

I feel like I was late to the party with The Coal Men. If, like me, you are just now discovering this great Nashville band, Escalator is a great place to start.

Before 2013, I knew I liked Valued Customer, but I wasn’t completely sure why.  This year with the release of their truly mind-blowing/expanding Kalpa, I have become convinced that this wacky kids from Toronto are nothing short of musical geniuses…maybe just geniuses.

prattle on, rick is another Nashville-based “discovery” from 2013. Looks like I caught on just in-time for his fan-only release A Decade Begins and the album from which this track is taken, his extraordinary Some Quiet Majesty.

Likely, Taco Land and Tipi Valley have very little in common.  One is from south Texas and the other from coastal Wales. They have both been featured prominently on this blog for some time. And they both had impressive releases in 2013. In listening today, I heard something (subtle) to connect these two great artists/bands.  Always good to have long time blog friends/supporters in the shuffle.

Monks of Mellonwah are releasing their debut album as a series of EPs.  The first two parts – Ghost Stories and Afraid to Die were released in 2013.  The final part will be released in 2014.  Some awesome hard rock from down under.

James the Giant released one of the most beautiful/painfully touching records of the year.  The song featured today is dedicated to his brother who was killed in Afghanistan.

The Danbury Lie and The Imperial Rooster have just about nothing in common except that they both released incredible music in 2013 that I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing and sharing.  There will be much more on both of these bands forthcoming.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Hurrah Mix

A cool selection of songs and not much time… let’s go…

BONUS TRACKS:   “Balcony” by Jordan Klassen    “Steal a Ride” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club   “Old Friends” by The Coal Men    “December” by prattle on, rick.     “Into the River” by The Quick and The Dead     “West Germany” by Minutemen    “Sam Kelley” by Darrin Bradbury   “Something Changed” by Andrew Ferris   “John Doe”  by ??? (another of those “Unknown Artist” tags that I couldn’t identify in my quick internet search. Clue 1: The song does not appear to be about the member of X.  Clue 2: It’s a pretty nifty song  Side Note: There are a lot of songs called “John Doe”)    “Easy” by Son Lux

Transition Track (note: The Bonus tracks were listened to on my drive home last night.  The forthcoming shuffle songs were from my drive to work this morning.  I listened to the first half of this song on my way home and the second half on my work): “Baltimore Boats” by Humming House (from Humming House.)

Shuffle proper…

“I Know You’ll Be Mine” by Mark Robinson (from Quit Your Job – Play Guitar.  Nashville may be – as I read recently – over-hyped when it comes to it’s “hotness” has a music town, but we are very fortunate to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to talented musicians from all genres of music.  Case in point – Mark Robinson, blues man extraordinaire)

“Permanent/Imperanent 1213” by Peck (from Peck Sounds (album in process). Peck is Chris Peck who #E2TG careful readers recognize as part of the featured artist alum – The Disappointment.  He is releasing his new album one song at a time.  It’s called Peck Sound… oh, I see what he did there…)

“Baby It’s Cold Outside” by Annie Sellick (from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory.)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Tender Mercy Mix

Well, well, well… we managed to stir up some controversy with yesterday’s Hall of Fame inductees due to our blatant omission of the Latin American singing group Menudo.*

*True except for the controversy and the fact that our omission of Menudo was not blatant.

As we prepare to induct the next three E2TG favorites into our HofF, we still do not have Menudo, but we do have a boy band of sorts to head today’s list.  (A Hall of Fame page is still in the works)

4.  Valued Customer (Toronto, Canada)
5.  The Dead Exs (New York, NY)
6. The Imperial Rooster (Espanola, NM)

Welcome to the E2TG Hall of Fame!

Shuffle begins in 3….
2….
1….
JUMP

“Obsidian” by Theory of Machines (from EP1.  A heavy rock instrumental from London.)

“Some Say” by Solardrive (featuring TC) (from Solardrive. An interesting new indie-pop band from L.A. which features Balthazar Getty)

“Broken Heartland” by The Coal Men (from Escalator.  More excellent stuff from this Nashville band. The attached video features lead Coal Man – Dave Coleman performing a Daniel Lanois song in the awe-inspiring sanctuary of Nashville’s Downtown Presbyterian Church)

“Mercy” by prattle on, rick. (from Some Quiet Majesty.  Another great track from this Nashville singer/songwriter)

“Blue Moon Howl” by Mark Robinson (from Have Axe -Will Travel. This album has been Nominated by the Nashville Blues Society for the Best Self-Produced CD for the International Blues Challenge.  The winner will be announced in January 2014. Mark is a great ambassador for Nashville Blues music, and Have Axe – Will Travel is one of our favorite albums of this year.)

“Little Time” by Adam Hill (from Little Time. Make it three Nashville artists in a row.  Little Time is the latest album by Singer Songwriter Adam Hill)

“Tenderness” by General Public (from All the Rage.  Digging back to 1984 and this IRS records band headed by Dave Wakeling  and Ranking Roger of The Beat, and their smash hit song.)

“Theatre is the Life of You” by the Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime. San Pedro.)

“Baby Blue” by Jay Farrar (a cover of the 1971 BadFinger classic which has come back into prominence due to it’s inclusion in the final episode of a recent popular television series.  Ex-Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt member Farrar turns the song into a beautiful, dusty alt-country gem.)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Grand Company Mix

Introducing:  The E2TG Hall of Fame —– Ta Da!

You may be asking, “WTF?” Basically, it comes down to this: My blogging consultant told me I need to start being more controversial to attract more readers to my site. Whenever, I see posts about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they always seem to attract highly opinionated comments. So, I thought if I came up with my own Hall of Fame, it might create controversy and angry comment wars which might “go viral” as the kids say.*

*All of the proceeding is true except for the following: I don’t have a blogging consultant. I rarely read comment wars about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the only thing likely to “go viral” over here is an actual virus.

Really, I got to thinking about the artists I consider E2TG featured artist. When I began writing E2TG way back in the spring of 2011, I began naming a Band of the Week just about every week.  I did this for a about year, before switching to a featured artist designation – wherein I would name ten or so “featured artists” every month and put them in “heavy rotation” for the remainder of that month.  That carried on for just over six months. Since, then I keep featuring new music, but I haven’t really been very organized about recognizing those bands.  So… I decided to take stock – at this random point in E2TG history and go back and formally recognize all of the bands that I consider part of the E2TG family.  To do so, I decided to use the TAG “cloud” on the sidebar and begin with the most tagged bands and work my way down.  So, for the near future, I am going to name three, two or one band every day to join the E2TG HofF.  It’s a purely honorary title – as currently it does not come with a cash prize nor is there an actual Hall.

I am going to create and maintain a Sidebar linked Page for the Hall of Fame artists – with videos, songs, links, an on-going web-store and more.  It’s still under construction, so will update when I have a Page set up.

So without much more ado, E2TG is pleased to announce our inaugural class of Hall of Fame inductees:

1. THE END MEN from Brooklyn, NY

2.TACO LAND – from San Antonio, TX

3. SKELETONS IN THE PIANO from Saratoga Springs, NY

Stay tuned!  More to come.

Shuffle is up next

“Honey You” by The Dirty Guv’nahs (from Somewhere Beneath These Southern Skies. Groovy grooves from Knoxville, TN.)

“Bluebirds Fall” by The Autumn Defense (from the Birds, Beasts, and Flowers EP. A split EP with the band Hem. Lilting harmonies from Chicago by way of Wilco.)

“August” by prattle on, rick. (from A Decade Begins. Summery instrumental goodness from Nashville.)

“Grand Company” by Joseph Mooradian (It’s good to see this kid making lots of new music – I just heard an excellent even newer song this morning.  This one is supposedly a work-in-progress, but it’s an excellent song. CLICK HERE to listen and download.“)

“Last Nite” by Adele (covering The Strokes.)

“Tracks of my Tears by Linda Ronstadt (covering Smokey Robinson and The Miracles classic)

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Spice of Life Mix

As usually seems to be the case, I added a ton of new music to my active playlist last night, and not one of the new songs ended up in this morning’s shuffle. Rest assured they will turn up sooner or later.

What’s exciting to me about today’s shuffle is that every song in the mix is either new, relatively new or at least new to me. It also excites me that there is such an incredible variety to the music.

Well – enough vagueness… Jump past the break to see today’s Morning Shuffle:

“March” by prattle on, rick. (another from A Decade Begins. My shuffle function has been in love with prattle on, rick lately, and I couldn’t be happier. There is a gentle uplifting quality to his sound that has been much needed.  A Decade Begins features an instrumental song for each month of the year. Here in Tennessee, March still has the potential for extreme cold, but we also get our first real taste of the coming spring. I felt that hope in this composition)  (Nashville, TN)

“Tha’s what She Say” by Wild Child (from Pillow Talk. A love the vintage sound of this song – complete with the doo wop harmonies.) (Austin, TX)

“Stuck” by The Coal Men (from Escalator. To my chagrin, I missed last night CD release party for this record, so think of this as a consolation prize. I’m continuing to love this album, and I encourage you – dear reader – to check it out.) (Nashville, TN)

“Thin Edge of a Knife” by James Crawford (from James Crawford. With release just a couple of days away, I’m happy another song from this remarkable album came up. There is a Tin Pan Alley quality to this song in particular – a lament of sorts for the things we used to do. I also see this album as another vindication for the openness I’ve tried to practice in writing this blog. With every bit of new music that comes my way – no matter how it gets to me, I have trained myself to be prepared to be blown away. In ways, I don’t completely understand, this approach has allowed me to hear some amazing music. Yes, occasionally, I will check out the music of someone who follows me on Twitter and discover it to be mostly poor quality covers of overplayed Popular songs. But to a much greater extent, I hear talented people  – putting themselves on the line, and trying to make genuine heart-felt music. So, when someone I know from my high school days says he is putting out an album – hell yes, I want to hear it. And in this case, I want to share it with all of you.)  (Nashville, TN)

“The Mountain” by The Black Market Merchants (from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation. I think I first came across this hard blues rock band from NYC via Papa Tune’s blog. Even if that is not the case, the odds make it a no-brainer guess.) (New York, NY)

“Hope and Promise” by prattle on, rick. (from Some Quiet Majesty. More prattle on, rick. love from my shuffle function. This one is from the recently released new album.)  (Nashville, TN)

“It’s Not That I Still Love You” by Oh! My Blackbird (another from the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Comp. This alt-folk trio make music that is lyrical and fun) (New York, NY)

“Fuct Up” by Moovalya (from Moovalya. Sometimes you just need to rock really hard. You just do. You know me, I love all kinds of music, and I am a big fan of some really sweet, gentle, soft, melodic and beautiful songs. But, because variety is the spice of life… this band came to my attention  via a Twitter Follow, and this is the first song of theirs to show up in a Shuffle. You are Welcome.) (Phoenix, AZ)

(remember any time you make a purchase of any kind from Amazon and go through E2TG you are helping a poor music blogger… 😉 )

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Bank Robbery Mix

So – I just received word that Those Mockingbirds will be releasing the first official single from their highly anticipated new album on October 22.  It’s called “How to Rob a Bank” and we have the cover artwork post above. The cover art was hand-drawn by Bella Agnello who happens to be the 7 year old daughter of legendary producer John Agnello who was worked with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile and more.  I would hit up Those Mockingbirds on FACEBOOK so you don’t miss out.

What some of you may not realize, is that I give a ton of credit to Those Mockingbirds for the success of Ear to the Ground.  Here’s why.  I started Ear to the Ground in May 2011 without a clue or a direction.  Over the course of the remainder of that year, I began to find my voice. Late in the year, I came across Those Mockingbirds via a Twitter follow (I think and choose to believe). I quickly became enamored with their melodic hard alt rock sound. I named them my Band of the Week.

Shortly after that, I received a contact from Don Ryan who was and I suppose still is friends with the band, his video This Town still ranks among my all time favorites. Around this time, I met venerable NJ music blogger and raconteur Popa Tunes who turned me on to Dead Exs, The End Men and so many more.  Through The End Men, I met Gypsy West and Chris Peck’s band The Disappointment. Through Don Ryan, I met The Danbury Lie. Somehow, in all that, I met Skeletons in the Piano who ended up being our Band of the Year for 2012…  And in all that, I became the number one ranked Tennessee Based Music Blogger Who Mostly Blogs About Bands from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut  (an albeit lightly populated category).  Of course, I’ve diversified since them, and I’ve even been known to write about Nashville and Tennessee  bands on occasion.

My point being, Those Mockingbirds play a vital role in shaping this blog which all of you have come to know and love.  By the way, the mockingbird is the State Bird of Tennessee. Coincidence? You be the judge.

Ahem…. now that I’ve made this post all about me, I will turn it around and implore you to grab the new Those Mockingbird single on October 22 and keep your ear to the ground for impending details on the full album.

Today’s shuffle is after the JUMP

Due to technical difficulties, we have a short but sweet shuffle today.  A quirky, odd little mix filled with some really good music.

“Fingerprint Armada” by Liquid Casing (High concept, progressive Hard Rock from these Texas veterans from their album A Separate/Divide)

“Shenandoah” by Tom Waits and Keith Richards (I feel like there is not much I can add to Tom Waits + Keith Richards doing “Shenandoah”.)

“My Coming Son” and “April” by prattle on, rick. (We close this short set of music with two in a row from Nashville’s prattle on, rick. “My Coming Son” is a touching number off the Some Quiet Majesty album which was recently released. “April” is another “month” song from the album A Decade Begins”)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – FIGJAM Mix

H/T to Darby Cockroach for the subtitle to today’s post.

Thanks to this blog and the magic of the Internet and Social Media and Purple Faeries, I have had the good fortune to virtually or actually meet a number of amazingly talented people from all around the world.

Today’s Mix includes some great new music from some of those amazingly talented people….

To the Shuffle:

“Better Than”  by The Coal Men from Escalator (I actually didn’t meet Dave Coleman front man for The Coal Men on-line, but it was through some on-line connections that I was at the Five Spot on September 19th to see his solo set and get turned on to his band’s music. Escalator has it’s official CD release party this Wednesday night in East Nashville.  I am really digging this CD, and I urge you to check it out.)

“Reberto” by Shake Jack from Reberto (Shake Jack are  from Argentina. They make some awesome neuvo-60s rock sounds.  Reberto is the band’s latest EP. It’s in Spanish, but cool music is a universal language. )

“Vices” by The Quick and the Dead from Easy Getting By  (I met Joey Mansman when he was in a band called Cosmonauts. I had the good fortune to interview them back when I actually had time for such thing…. someday again… He’s now part of a hard rocking, Americanaish band called The Quick and the Dead. They just released their debut record. “Vices” is one of my favorite songs so far.)

“Born To” by Jesca Hoop from The House That Jack Built (Okay – I don’t know Jesca Hoop. However, if she wants to “Friend” me on Facebook or whatever….  This song is from her 2012 album The House That Jack Built.)

“Your Dreams Will Always Follow” by prattle on, rick from Some Quiet Majesty (prattle on, rick is a brilliant Nashville singer/songwriter.  I think I was introduced to his music either through Twitter follow or through Noisetrade or Brite Revolution or else a little bird told me to check him out.  Either way, I’m glad I discovered this music, and this song is just sooooo gorgeous.  Thank you, little bird!)
