Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

First off, I witnessed a great night of music at The 5 Spot last night. Jon Latham, Allen Thompson, Zach Schmidt, Tim Easton, and Darrin Bradbury – powerhouse stuff there!  As a bonus, I get to stick around and see long-time Ear to the Ground favorites Year of October as part of the late show line-up.  I am really proud of how they have grown musically in the past few years since I first heard them.

Also, my review of the Wednesday Night Bobby Memphis Benefit show is currently (at press time) on the front page of No Depression, and although, I can admit that I always happy when something I wrote gets featured like that, what I really hope is that it leads some people to helping out a man who I do not know and did not know of, but who is obviously respected and loved by a large number of people.  You can read the review here.

“True Love Doesn’t Beg” by Jesse and Noah

Jesse and Noah are brothers who come from a rich musical background.  Their father and uncle are The Bellamy Brothers who you should know from “Let Your Love Flow” among many other great songs.  Jesse and Noah have taken their musical background as a starting point and have been working hard for many years to forge their own path in the word of music. They have a new EP of acoustic covers called Brethen due out soon.  That collection includes their incredible cover of the Everly Brothers “All I Have to Do Is Dream” which they played for Couch by Couchwest a year or so ago.  Today’s track is from the duo’s 2013 album, Driven Back.

“Magnolia” by Matt Prater

North Alabama Country Music traditionalist, Matt Prater is up next with a beautiful song from his most recent album Tables and Chairs.

“Throw it Away” by Joe Jackson

Power Pop may mean different things to different people, but the connotation I take from it is that of high energy music backing up superb, hook-laden songs.  I’ve always liked “Throw it Away” for it’s punk attitude and incessant beat.  It hard for me to hear it and not want to move.

“This is Love” by Self

It’s funny, I added this to my playlist a while back, but I was just thinking about Self, Matt Mahaffey, and Spongebath Records.  In the mid 1980s, Nashville had a thriving local music scene with a lot of bands getting national attention and signing the highly coveted “Major Label” deals. I grew up as a Nashville Rock music fan and witnessed and read about this vibrant and wild period. I moved to Memphis is 1988 and officially moved to Nashville in 1991.  By the early 90s, the local music scene was decimated.  It was a combination of disillusionment, self-destructive behaviors, and maybe just the natural flow of life. In any event, Self and the label they helped form, Spongebath were instrumental in rebuilding the local music scene  (or perhaps more precisely in building the next phase of the local scene).  Anyway, this song is from the last official Self album called Porno, Mint, and Grime (2005).  The song also appears on the soundtrack to Another Gay Movie (for you trivia buffs).

“Share Your Adderall” by Mike Thomas

Our second Mike Thomas of the week – an uplifting number about legal troubles and prescription drug abuse… seriously, it is a really cool song.  I was only able to find one video on You Tube, so the Video Playlist contains the same song I used the other day, but it’s a good song, too, and most of you probably didn’t watch it. For those of you who want to hear it (which should be all of you), I’m going to try to post a Widget of the song below…

“Fine and Mellow” (Billie Holiday cover) by Hurray for the Riff Raff

What’s that you say?  I haven’t posted a Billie Holiday cover by popular New Orleans band, Hurray for the Riff Raff?  Well, consider that omission covered!

“Walking in the Dark” by Brock Zeman

This song was one of the highlights of the night when I saw Brock Zeman (along with David Olney, Will Kimbrough, and Samantha Crain at the Bluebird Café a couple of weeks ago.

“1000 Years” by Direct Divide

Direct Divide are a relatively new band from Seattle which features symphonic and cinematic rock music with a blistering violin and powerful lead vocals.

“Pinball Wizard” (from Tommy) by Rod Stewart

From the 1972 album by the London Symphony Orchestra.  Originally, Rod Stewart had been tapped to sing all of Roger Daltrey’s lead role, however, soon Daltrey and Pete Townsend became more involve in the project, and Stewart’s role was reduced this one song.

Another great night of music in Nashville – both the shows I saw and those I wasn’t able to see (can only be in one place at a time!).  What I saw:  Lindsay Ellyn had her EP release show at Two Old Hippies in the Gulch, and once again demonstrated why I have been so impressed with her music since I met her last fall.  It’s a simple formula that not too many can or will follow.  Start with great songs, surround yourself with top-notch talent, treat others kindly, and work hard. Her EP Out of Road is out and available at the usual places, and it comes highly recommended by #E2TG.

After Lindsay’s show, I hopped over to 3rd and Lindsley for the Bobby Memphis Benefit show. It was a great night for a great cause, and I finally got to see the Human Radio live and her both their classics and some awesome new songs.  (Read my Review on No Depression). To donate to the Bobby Memphis fund – visit the Go Fund Me page.

Human Radio reformed at the end of 2014 and they are in the midst of a Kickstarter Campaign for a new album and tour

Whew!  Btw, another great night of music on tap for tonight!  Shuffle did you say?

“Dreams” by Rich Robbins (feat. Mick Jenkins)

Rich Robbins once again shows off his lyrical prowess with a dreamy track from his debut album, Nimbus.

“Another Girl, Another Planet” (The Only Ones cover) by The Replacements

From the legendary live compilation, Shit Shower and Shave – comes this cover of the 1978 British Punk/New Wave song by the band The Only Ones.

“Everybody Loves Elvis” by Brock Zeman

Just the plain truth from Brock Zeman from his album Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil’s Back.  So glad I got to see him a couple of weeks ago.

“My Band Just Got Signed to Def Jam” by 100% Beefcake

Seriously, ya’ll… at 13 years old, Hayden Nork has more side projects than most people have songs.  More weird, wild, and awesome music from the minds of the teenagers of Connecticut.  By the way, thanks for making me search for 100% Beefcake on You Tube.  I didn’t find any videos of the band – they are pretty new – but I found stuff… yep, I found stuff…

“When Ye Go Away” by The Waterboys

Digging deeper into the classic Fishermen’s Blues album.  A deep well that promises and produces refreshing drinks of clear waters.

“YoYo Daddy” by Sidestreet Reny and Lil’bell

From the album, Holler.  Thanks for Popa Tunes for including this in his latest mixtape – I cannot get enough of this duo from the Northwest.

“Fragmented World” by Split Single

The title track from the album.  As far as I know, this is not available on an actual split single, but I really didn’t spend much time verifying that, so maybe it is.  In any event, Split Single in the band.  Fragmented World is the song and the album.  Check out the Marathon Man-themed video in the playlist below.

“The Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma” by The Great Game

The multi-national European band delve into Buddhist philosophy with this track from their debut album.

“Most of the Time” by Holy Sheboygan! window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js

Another awesome track from the cleverly titled third album by this band that formed in Wisconsin.  By the way, the album is called Three!  As I mentioned before, if you get the chance to see them live, don’t miss them – it is high-energy fun with highly imaginative instrumentation.

Ever wonder what would happen if you created a playlist with a wide variety of music from different genres and different eras and then hit shuffle and wrote about the 8-12 songs that came up randomly during your morning commute?   Well, wonder no more, here at Ear to the Ground, we do this just about every week day and an occasional Saturday or Sunday if I am bored…  In fact, we did it today…. here’s what happened:

“A Redneck Oughta Be the President” by Mike Thomas

Middle Tennessee songwriter Mike Thomas engages in some non-partisan political speculation…

“You Spin Me ‘Round (Like a Record)” by Dead or Alive

Sometimes, the 1980s were like this… just saying…

“Columbus Stockade” by Tigerman WOAH!

Another day, another Tigerman WOAH! song.  This one is about time spent in the state of Georgia.

“Burn.Flicker.Die.” by American Aquarium

American Aquarium are one of the best and hardest touring bands out there.  Their new album, Wolves, is out now.  This is the title track from the album that preceded Wolves. I saw them at a packed out show at the Basement on a Monday night of the week between Christmas and New Years.  It was fantastic.

“The Original Miss Jesus” by John Wesley Harding

One of my favorite songs on Why We Fight.  If my memory is correct, I saw him play an early show at an old downtown club called Ace of Clubs around the time this album came out.  If my timeframe is right, I was living in an apartment right next the club (on the other side of the Shelby Street Bridge – before it was a pedestrian bridge).  If all of that is the result of faulty memory, this is still one of my favorite songs from Why We Fight.

“Teach Me (Say It, Don’t Spray It)” by Tom Schreck

Always good to have a song in the shuffle from one of my favorite local songwriters.  When local is Nashville, being a favorite local songwriter is a big deal.  Tom Schreck is a big deal.  Get on it.  From his album, Save Your Glory.  The video I included in the video playlist is Tom doing a cover of Billie Jean which I have posted before, but which is worth repeating.

“Calico Valley” by Susan James

Ear to the Ground first caught up with California singer-songwriter in 2013 with her brilliant Americana album, Driving Toward the Sun.  She has recorded her follow up album called, Sea Glass which will be released June 16.  This is a song from that forthcoming album, which she says is a departure from the previous album and a return to her singer-songwriter roots.  To my mind, the music classic California pop music with maybe a hint of psychedelic influences on some tracks.  I have enjoy the album very much, and this track made a great addition to this morning’s shuffle.

“It’s Tricky” by Run DMC

What’s that you say? Ear to the Ground has been thin on old school hip hop classics?  It can be hard keeping a balance of all the different types of music out there.  Dare I say, it’s tricky?  Dare I?  Released in 1986, “It’s Tricky” was the last single released from Run DMC’s third album, Raising Hell.

“Down Time” by Grumsling      window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”;

I absolutely love it when I “discover” innovative new music that combines an original sound with flat out great songs. When the band in question has a cool name and an even cooler avatar, I like it even more.  Grumsling.  Got it?

Back at the shuffle game after an extended weekend….  Let’s do this thing!

“Rat” by Tigerman WOAH!

Tigerman WOAH! are a Massachusetts/Georgia band. They describe their music as: “Appalachian mountain folk/bluegrass influenced punk rock with the occasional hip-hop freak-out.”  I can’t say that I disagree and yes it is as good as it sounds. This song is on the album Up South Vol. II & I.

“Gluten Farm” by Circus Propaganda

Circus Propaganda are from Bethany, Connecticut. The band includes Evan and Hayden of The Foresters. This song is on the album Botany. Look for a new album Parabola soon maybe…

“In My Own Time” by The Three O’clock

What about a bit of Paisley Underground, and a cover of a 1967 song from the Bee Gees.  This cover was on the 1983 album Sixteen Tambourines.  The original song was only 16 years old when this cover was recorded, and now the cover is over 30 years old, and it sounds fantastic.

“All Around the World Or The Myth of Fingerprints” by Paul Simon

From Simon’s album, Graceland and featuring the East L.A. band Los Lobos.  “I’ve seen them all and man they’re all the same…”

“Our Love” by The Bros Landreth

The Winnipeg band with a song from their latest album, Let it Lie.

“I Woke Up” by Mouth Reader

The Murfreesboro band with a song from their album, Hands.  The album is available packaged as a pop-up book that was released on Record Store Day.

“Misery Loves Company” by Eight O’ Five Jive

Another swinging song from the album, Too Many Men, but Nashville’s jumpingest, jiviest combo.

“Down the Dip” by Aztec Camera

The final song on the original release of Aztec Camera’s 1983 album High Land, Hard Rain.  Our second 1983 song in the shuffle today. I was 17 in 1983, it was a pretty good year.

“Lady in the Radiator” by Black Iron Prison

Black Iron Prison are a long running Metal band from Up-State (up state? Upstate? up-state?) New York.  The current line-up includes Elijah Hargrave who was a member of the 2013 E2TG Band of the Year Skeletons in the Piano.  So that makes this band family… the black iron sheep of the family?

“Know Your Animals” by Atticus Floyd

Atticus Floyd is from Connecticut.  They are part of Circus Propaganda who we heard earlier in the shuffle. Part of the amazing creative output from the youth of that northeastern state.  This song or a version of this song or a song with the same title is also on the Circus Propaganda album.  Anyway, it’s a cool song, and since I couldn’t find a video for Atticus Floyd – I posted one for a song from the Pink Floyd album Animals which share 2 out of 5 words with this song and band.  If you want to hear the Atticus Floyd song, I’m attaching a widget below.

From the Mike D album, Country Mike’s Greatest Hits.

Just a heads up… there will not be a Morning Music Shuffle tomorrow.  Plan accordingly…  So this will be the last shuffle of the week, and we have a good one…

“I’m Sorry (But So is Brenda Lee)” by Marshall Crenshaw

One of the best songwriters of all time – from his album Downtown referencing Little Miss Dynamite and one of her best known songs.

“Cry Baby Cry” by Richard Barone

Richard Barone covers the Beatles in spectacular fashion with this track from his groundbreaking live album Cool Blue Halo.

“So. Central Rain” by R.E.M.

This is the final track we have to present from R.E.M.’s second album, Reckoning. Some sources add a subtitle to this song (“I’m Sorry”) which coincidently references back to the first song in the shuffle..

“I Have to Leave” by Warren Zevon

Given David Letterman’s fondest for Warren Zevon, I kind of see this song as Ear to the Ground’s way of saying “goodbye”.

“War 150” by Tom Schreck

From his album Save Your Glory… another excellent song from the Nashville Outsider himself…

“Home in the Heart of the Beat” by Beat Rodeo

The title track to the second album by Steve Almaas and company.  “Johnny 1, Johnny 2, Johnny 3…”

“Fake Roses” by The Lone Bellow

Modern country music from Brooklyn New York.. off their latest album, Then Came the Morning…

“Currency of Love” by Joseph Arthur

I got to see Joseph Arthur performing and painting early in April at the Safety Harbor song festival.  This song is from his album, The Ballad of Boogie Christ.

“Flew a Falcon” by Richard Barone

Our second track of the day from Cool Blue Halo!  A gorgeous song.

“Flaring Up” by Ricky Mirage

The lead track from Pop Goes the Sun…

“Haywire” by Aztec Camera

One of three bonus tracks added to the 1991 CD release of High Land, Hard Rain – the 1983 debut by Roddy Frame and company.

“Drop Your Bucket” by Brock Zeman

I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Brock Zeman last week at the Bluebird Café.  This is a song from his latest album, Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil’s Back.  Check out his music, and if you get the chance to see him live – don’t miss it.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – A Czech at the Blue Line Mix

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I saw a remarkable show at City Winery – Nashville last night.  It was a CD Release show for Darrell Scott’s new album which features the songs of the late Ben Bullington.  You can read my review on No Depression here.

On to the shuffle….

“In Between Drinks” by Tim Carroll

My visual interpretation of the awesome song that I get to hear at least once just about every week.

“An Arrow in the Gale” by Magnolia Electric Co.

From the 2009 album Josephine.  Jason Molina is very much missed in this world.

“Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)” by Warren Zevon

A song about the importance of knowing your role and waiting for the right opportunity to rise above it. Or something like that… It’s Warren Zevon singing about hockey! What else do you want?

“Sleeping Bag” by Patrick Sweany

Patrick Sweany filled in for Tim Carroll a few weeks back for the Rock and Roll Happy Hour, and he did a mighty fine job.  This is an awesome song from his 2011 album, That Old Southern Drag.  Sweany is from Ohio but now resides in East Nashville.  He was worked with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys among many others.

“Saint Valentine” by Gregory Alan Isakov

The South African born, American singer-songwriter with a song from his 2013 album The Weatherman.  This came off of a Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler.

“Glacial Flood” by the transcendents

There is a reason I still check out as much of the music that comes through my e-mail as I can…  This band from New Zealand has rapidly become one of my favorites simply because their songs and music is so amazing.  They seem like descent people, too, and it will be good to know some people if I ever wake up and find myself in New Zealand…

“Love/H8” by The Danbury Lie

Interestingly, I have been reading a book written by someone named Dan Burylie.  I have no idea if the book is connected to this #E2TG favorite, but the cover of the book and the cover of the album (Choose Your Delusion) are identical.  So if the two works are not related there may be a lawsuit in the future…  come to think of it, the title is similar, too… hmm…

Choose Your Delusion: Stream-of-Consciousness Ramblings from the Mind of Dan Burylie
window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js

“Argosvinis Moni” by Imam Baildi

Also from that Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler.  This is a band from Athens… such a great history of music from  Athens –  B52s, R.E.M…. oh wait, this band is from Athens, Greece.  Never mind.  Anyway, it some cool exotic sounding music to expand your musical vocabulary.

“Roberta Sparrow” by Grumsling

From the EP, A Church, On a Boat, In the Sea.  This highly creative Oakland, California band has captured my attention in short order.  I highly recommend the Philosophy of Time Travel if you want to know where the title of this song came from…

“Tying Ten Knots in the Devils Tail” by Townes Van Zandt

I kind of sort of think that maybe I featured this song before, but it may have been on one of my Facebook posting sprees… which you would know about if you “Liked” by Facebook page (link at the top of this entry).. hint, hint…  either way, it is Townes Van Zandt so even if this is a repost, you know what?  I don’t care… the song was written by Gail Gardner.

“Belly of the Beast” by Holy Sheboygan!

I had the wonderful opportunity to see Wisconsin based Holy Sheboygan! last month when they brought their little bus and inventive, upbeat music to Nashville.    They brought everything but the kitchen sink to the stage of Foobar… and it was kind of dark, so I’m not completely sure that there wasn’t a kitchen sink.. Cameron Carrus who plays bass for Darrin Bradbury and Tim Carroll among others is a long time member of this band.

So, I find myself short on time, so I have to speed through this. I hope you find time to dig deeper.  I could not find the exact track for all the songs for the Video Playlist, so you my have to do some internet searches.  Some great stuff, and well worth the effort.

“Racing to the Ruins” by Syd Straw

I have enjoyed so much revisiting Syd Straw’s classic album Surprise. Truly one of the best albums of the late 80s.

“Reprise” by The End Men

What a reprise! From the 2013 E2TG Band of the Year’s latest album, Terms and Conditions. The End Men are currently tearing up Europe!

“Takin’ a Ride” by The Replacements

The opening track from the first studio album by the one and only Replacements!

“Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root

Some people say, I don’t have enough 90s music on Ear to the Ground.  Actually, to my knowledge no one has ever said that, but they may have thought it… but I can’t prove it.  In any event, here is a song released as a single in 1995.  A rough version appeared on Rusted Root’s debut album, Cruel Sun.  The song was rerecorded and included on their second album (and major label debut), When I Woke.  Undeniably infectious.

“India” by Roxy Music

A lush instrumental from the classic 1982 album, Avalon.

“Magnetic” by Michael Sackler-Berner

A song from the Shimmer and Shine EP by the fast rising New York singer-songwriter.

“One Too Many” by Tiffany Huggins-Grant

From the forthcoming album, Jonquil Child, by Nashville-based singer-songwriter Tiffany Huggins-Grant, this song was written by Pamela Jackson (one of only two songs on the album written by others). The album was produced by E2TG favorite Mark Robinson who also produced David Olney’s 2014, When the Deal Goes Down. Really digging this album so far.

“Snow is Falling” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

Another track from the long-time D.C. area duo.  Lori Kelley is now a Nashville resident, and I got to hear her perform Sunday night.

“Just Like You” by Gill Landry

A fantastic track (and first single) from the recent self-titled solo effort by the Old Crow Medicine Show guitarist.

“On Your Knees” by fIREHOSE

From Ragin’ Full On…  one of my favorite fIREHOSE songs.

“The Road Ahead” by Boy Named Banjo

Another great song from the album Long Story Short by the young Nashville band who will be playing Bonnaroo in about a month.

“When the World’s Against Me” by Andrew Adkins and The Colored Parade

I also saw Andrew Adkins perform live Sunday night.  Here he is with his band, The Colored Parade with a song released on KidzlikeDanny 4 a compilation from an organization that raises money for various autism causes.  A great song to end today’s shuffle.

New Release News:  Lindsay Ellyn Out of Road EP released today!

I met Lindsay Ellyn last Autumn.  I featured some songs from her Shores EP here on Ear to the Ground, and I have had the great good fortune to see her play live a number of times since then.  She has been hard at work on her new EP for some time, and it is finally released to the world as of this morning.  I will be grabbing my copy after work today, but based solely upon the songs I’ve heard (which are fabulous) and the quality of the people Lindsay worked with on the EP (which is stellar), I can easily recommend you give a listen and add it to your collection.

It is also available on Bandcamp and iTunes you prefer.

“Ooh La La” by The Faces

The title track from the final studio album by The Faces. The song was written by Ronnie Lane and Ronnie Wood, and Ronnie Wood sings the lead vocals on the track.  The song was used in Wes Anderson’s film Rushmore, and in the 2004 comedy Without a Paddle.  There is a volume of information about the final days of The Faces and Rod Stewart which does not paint Mr. Stewart in the best possible light.  Of course his music from the late 70s and 80s provides it’s own damning evidence (apologies to Rod Stewart fans)….

“Heart of Darkness” by Hoodoo Gurus

A week or so back, we had a song from Syd Straw called “Heart of Darkness”.  This is a different song, taken from the Gurus 1987 album, Blow Your Cool!

“Chemistry” (Instrumental_125) by Hayden Coleman

Okay, this one has been lingering around our playlist for a while. We featured Hayden Coleman’s song, Chemistry some time ago, and then later we featured the a cappella version of the song.  Now, we have the instrumental version which showcases the fantastic beat making skills of my Mr. Coleman.

“Slowly, Surely Suzanne” by Ben Arthur

A song from Ben Arthur’s new album, Call and Response (which features “Answer” songs based upon other songs, poems, and fiction).  Arthur has also been hard at work producing and hosting the web series Songcraft Presents and working on the spin off Songs of the Road.  Check it all out.

“twinkle” by ricky mirage

Repetitive spoken word over a hooky indie pop beat.  Really digging this album a bunch.

“99 to Life” by Social Distortion

From Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell… “Lonely Weekends, Baby Lonely Night/The Judge he gave me 99 to Life”…

“Here Tonight” by [debut]

Postcards from Berlin is the new album by this L.A. based Electronic/Alternative band.  This is a very catchy song that sounds like something I’ve known about for a long time.  Okay, that maybe a weird way to say it, but occasionally I hear new songs that are so wonderful that it is hard to believe they never existed before. This is one of those songs to me.

“A Casual Conversation with Superman” by Darrin Bradbury

From a live album from back before Darrin perfected his stage banter about this song, but from when the song itself was flawless.  “Truth you know kid, sometimes me and Lex we fight for kicks, if he weren’t hell bent of destruction, hell I’d probably let him win…”   “Sometimes this old world just ain’t worth saving…”

“Love Assassin” by Christopher Allen Slade

The e-mail I received described the music thusly: “If Blondie and Scissor Sisters threw a Party, and AC/DC crashed it.”  Hell yes, I wanted to hear more.  The song is in video playlist so judge for yourself, but I do not think the description was misleading.  More to come!

“Music City USA” by Billy Joe Shaver

And had the good fortune to see Billy Joe Shaver perform on Music City Roots last month.  This song is from his latest album Long in the Tooth.  A living legend for sure.

Of course, the dominant news of the day is the passing of B.B. King, and my Facebook feed is filled with people from all different genres of music weighing in on the passing of this legend.  King’s death comes just days after the death of a much lesser known Blues singer named Captain Luke Mayer at the age of 87 and serves as a reminder that we are losing/have lost so many of the greats of the modern music era. I do not see a need to compare and contrast the  lives and careers of B.B. King and Captain Luke (at least not here and now), just to say how grateful I am that the music will endure.  Which means I am grateful for all the groups and people who are making sure that the music lives on.  And for me that means, the preservationists and historians and traditionalists as well as those who are continuing to innovate to keep all forms of Roots music (no matter how broadly that term is defined) a living breathing thing.

R.I.P. B.B. King and Captain Luke.  Thank you for the gifts of your music.

“Spilled Years” by Darrin Bradbury

“We will never be that dumb and young again…”  Nola – Darrin and Megan Palmer are in your city as I type this.  Make them feel at home!

“Monster Inside” by Broken Guru

A favorite of mine from Bent up Halo.

“Grounds for Divorce” by Elbow

From their 2008 album The Seldom Seen Kid.

“Leavin’ Sound” by The Ghoul Goes West

The next to the last song we have to present from Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things.  Please check out this band and give them some support. They are great.

“Gnab Gib” by Grumsling

Grumsling are a San Francisco area band that I really just got a hold of… they have a fascinating story that I will expound upon as more songs enter the shuffle.  In the meantime, just a listen.  The is for the EP Full Coverage.

“Hard Day Coming Down” by The Record Company

Some great bluesy music from this California band.

“The Visit” by Richard Barone

Another track from Cool Blue Halo….

“Keep Your Promises” by Sean Watkins

All I Do is Lie is the album..

“Sally, I’ve Been Shot” by Two Cow Garage

The Columbus Ohio band currently counts among its members Todd Farrell Jr.  This is from their Sweet Saint Me album.

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Yesterday, I posted a listing of the live music I have seen this week.  Last night, I had the opportunity to visit the famous Cash Cabin in Hendersonville to meet and hear some really awesome music from a San Diego band called Talk Like June.  They have been recording at the cabin with John Carter Cash producing.  The music was great, and they stories and people were truly incredible. The spirit of Johnny and June Carter Cash is so present in that relatively small space.

Please understand, though, I gather no pleasure from seeing incredible live shows and meeting legendary music figures and all of that… I do it all for you dear reader – so that I may bring all of those experiences back with me and make Ear to the Ground the best it can be,  It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it…

Please don’t feel too bad for me, though….

“19” by Boy Named Banjo

Nashville’s Boy Named Banjo are going to be at Bonnaroo next month.  This song is from their album, Long Story Short.  A shout out to my friend Boyd for the recommendation.  He’s been guiding my musical tastes and experiences for many, many years,  and he currently is Israel having an incredible experience I am sure.

“City of Ends” by A Color Engine

A Color Engine was a project featuring one of Ear to the Ground’s absolute favorite people, Don Ryan along with Eric Burchfield who was part of Elephant Goes West which we featured here.  Don made this old project available as a form of compensation for the fact that some of us have been waiting literally a million years for a new Don Ryan record… okay maybe not literally… but you know… I dig this A Colored Engine record, but I’m still baiting my breath for the really new record.

“Hey Lawdy Papa” by The Barefoot Movement

Among this interesting people I met last night was this band newly relocated to Nashville.  They have a very real interest in promoting and learning traditional music, and I got hold of some of their music.  This song is from an EP called The High Road.  This is a Traditional song once recorded by a blues singer named Teddy Grace.

“Fisher’s Hornpipe” by David Schnaufer and The Cactus Brothers

Speaking of Traditional music…. we have another track from the legendary Dulcimer player here with Nashville band The Cactus Brothers which started as a side project of the great 1980s Nashville band, Walk the West.

“Swarm” by Whiskey Shivers

Exposing the rowdier side of roots music, we have Whiskey Shivers from their self-titled album.

“The Way it Went Down” by Tim Carroll

One of my favorite (among many songs) by the prolific and tireless Nashville guitarist and songwriter.  From his Pure as Coal album.  The video was produced by students at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film here in Nashville.

“White Flag” by John Moreland

Oklahoma songwriter John Moreland has released one of the best albums of the year and if you ever get the chance to see him live – go and be prepared to have your mind and heard blown wide open.

“Uja” by Tanya Tagaq

In our quest to make sure we leave no musical stone unturned..  some contemporary throat singing music from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut in Canada.  This is actually the second track we’ve presented from her.  Pretty cool stuff.

“Weirdo” by Masked Intruder

Masked Intruder are a masked Pop Punk/Power Pop band from Madison, Wisconsin. Weirdo is just a flat out awesome song.

“Tide is Rising” by Direct Divide

Direct Divide are from Seattle and play powerful Orchestral/Cinematic Rock music.

“Trustful Hands” by The Do

The Do (the o has a line through it – one of those European things I don’t know how to duplicate in typing).  They are from Paris France, and I really dig this song.  I want to hear more from them as soon as possible.
