Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I had a good time last night at The Basement East.  I got to see performances from two people I was first introduced to at the Safety Harbor Song Fest way back in late March – Chris Gelbuda and Daphne Willis.  It was the soft EP Release Show for Willis – whose new EP, Get It, will be released on Friday.

Opening the show was Kyshona Armstrong.  She actually played the first Safety Harbor Song Fest in 2014.  She plays some wonderful acoustic soul music and was backed by an outstanding band.  I really enjoyed her set, and I will be on the lookout for more opportunities to see her again.

Daphne Willis played next back by yet another outstanding band.  I am always hesitant to assign genres when the artist/band does not.  I will say there is a real pop instinct to her music.  The overwhelming impression is energy, enthusiasm, and a very clear understanding and appreciation for the way her music sounds.  Chris Gelbuda, who co-produced her new CD, joined her for a couple of songs, and then was the next on the bill.

I found out after the set that Gelbuda and his band only got the chance for minimum rehearsal time before the show, but I can honestly say, that did not come across. Gelbuda is an accomplished producer (he produced the latest hit single for Meaghan Trainor) and a professional songwriter.  I was very impressed by the caliber of his songs.

Unfortunately, I had to leave before the last act on the bill was done, but Sonia Leigh – playing with much of the band that accompanied Daphne Willis – sounded great.

On to the mid-week shuffle for your listening pleasure…

“Stupid Bird (This Time Next Year)” by Dean Fields

Another track from the Harvester Sampler.  This song relates the migration (leaving only return) to the similar effect small towns have on people.  I really like this one.

“Generic Bike Rider” by Batkhi Dahn

The return of Batkhi Dahn to the shuffle.  They have a new single out, but this is from the Plays 15 record.  This song is not about a name brand bike rider. Just so we are clear.

“City Kids” by Motorhead

What’s that? Why does Ear the Ground never have early period Motorhead in the shuffle?  The hell you say!  Ta-Da.

“The Bulrushes” (Bongos cover) by Tim Lee 3

When I came across this song a few weeks ago, and then discovered it was a few years old, I had to wonder why it took me so long to learn of its existence. Some of favorite people and E2TG favorites from Knoxville, Tennessee covering one of my favorite songs by one of the best bands of all time.  The song appeared on an benefit album for Hurricane Relief – I think following Sandy.

“The Hydra’s Heart” by The Unravelling

One of my favorite local songwriters has been posting lots of metal links today (that really doesn’t narrow it down much), but before I even knew that, this song came into the shuffle from the progressive metal band from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  The lead track (I think) from Tear a Hole in the Collective Vision. ROCK!

“It’s All Gone Now” by Jeremy Nash

Nashville-by-way-of-New York singer-songwriter Jeremy Nash just released a new album called Getaway Driver.  I got to hear him do some songs in a round Sunday night at Bobby’s Idle Hour.  This is our first listen to Getaway Driver, and it will not be the last.  We start with the last track on the album because that is how our randomness rolls sometimes. I’ve just listened to a few tracks on the album, but I really dig what I’ve heard so far.

“Monterey” by The Milk Carton Kids

Monterey is the title track from the latest album by the folk duo, The Milk Carton Kids. The track came to us via those 100 World Café Session downloads we got back several months ago. It is a great performance of a gorgeous song.

“Collide” by Dan Coyle

Another track from Random Thoughts and Incomplete Sentences – the 2009 album of one of our favorites.

“I Don’t Wanna Know” by Human Radio

We close things out with a favorite from the self-titled Human Radio record.  The band is working on a new album and playing some shows in Nashville and Memphis – including this Saturday at The 5 Spot.

Following their triumphant on-stage reunion to help close down the legendary New Jersey club, Maxwell’s, The Bongos released the long shelved Phantom Train album.  The album was recorded in the mid-80s but never released as the band splintered into other musical directions (including Richard Barone’s masterful solo records).  We feature the title track today, and it really captures an amazing band at a creative peak.

The title of the new Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings album is Give the People What They Want – so apparently the people want instant classic soul music for the 21st Century.

Marla Mase‘s music can be challenging – as it combines spoken word and powerful alternative rock with meaningful lyrics and outstanding production.  Whatever, this song just flat out rocks.

How about a classic Springsteen cover by Glen Hansard (The Frames, The Swell Season) which also features Eddie Vedder and Jake Clemons – who happens to be the nephew of late E Street Band Saxophonist Clarence Clemons. We can do that.

We featured a song from Frightened Rabbit’s 2013 album, Pedestrian Verse back shortly after the album was released.  Since then, I’ve been reading about the band all over the internet.  Coincidence?  You decide.  Regardless, we have another track from that album today.

Jordan Klassen is from Canada. He released his latest album Repentance back in September.  Today, we have the first single from that album.

Rosanne Cash just released a new album which marks a homecoming of sorts to her native southland.  Today, we have her version of a song written by her father, which comes off of one of the classic albums she made before moving up north –  King’s Record Shop.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – It Ain’t Easy Mix

Wow! I can’t believe another month has come and gone. It’s November!

I’m going to start something new on Monday – unless I don’t.  In the meantime, I have a nifty ten song Shuffle to send you into your weekend.

“Red Lights” by JWM

Today’s Mix begins after the jumpy-thingy

“Humdrum Blues” by The Growlers (from Paste Fall Pre(View) 2013.  The Growlers are a California 60s inspired Folk, Surf, whatever band. I can’t find that this song is on an album yet. But you can get it and other great music on the latest Paste/Noisetrade Sampler:)

“It Ain’t Easy” by David Bowie (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.  Did you know that this was a cover of a song by American songwriter Ron Davies who was the older brother of singer/songwriter Gail Davies? Me either. Now we both know.)

“Fooled by the Heart” by Nancy Apple (from The Memphis Belles – Past, Present and Future. I had the good fortune to meet Nancy Apple (The Queen of Memphis Country Music) a few weeks back at The Family Wash in Nashville when she played with Tim Lee 3 and other as part of the Troubadour Blues Roadshow. I got to share two of my favorite Memphis stories with her. This song is an awesome introduction to her music – for the uninitiated. The video I added to today’s Playlist is of a song she did the night I saw her – (the video is not from that night just to be clear.)”

“Tattoos” by Moovalya (from Moovalya.  Cool songs by a nifty hard rock band from Phoenix)

“This Old Heart” by Mark Robinson (from Quit Your Job – Play Guitar. Another awesome song from Mark’s previous album.  This is the Blues!)

“Halo” by Port O’Brien (Beyoncé cover by a now defunct San Francisco Indie band. This was on the October Feel Bad for You Mixtape.)

“Too Scared to Run Away” by James Crawford (from James Crawford. I still think it’s a pretty cool thing to reconnect with a friend from high school, find out they are putting out an album, and then discover that said album is so freaking brilliant. I understand that James is putting together a band for some shows… coming soon to a town near you – assuming you are near a town where he is going to play)

“Barbarella” by The Bongos (from Numbers With Wings. The Bongos reunited on stage to help close the doors on the legendary New Jersey club Maxwell’s. They announced that night that a new Bongos album was coming soon. Phantom Train is here.  I added that along with the classic Numbers With Wings to the E2TG Weekly Store. Feed or Begin your Bongos obsession now.  And yes, Barbarella is the title of the 1968 cult film starring Jane Fonda – based on a comic book.)

“The Fall of Man” by Andrew Ferris (from Yellow Lorry. Andrew Ferris is a British born singer/songwriter currently based in Austria.  He connected to me via Google+.  By the way, I have a nifty new URL for my Google+ account.  Anyway, Yellow Lorry is the debut album by Andrew Ferris which has been out just over a month.  His first EP was called Red Lorry.  I’m really enjoying this album so check him out.)

“A Song for Leonard Cohen” by Amanda Shires (from Down Fell the Doves.  Just about as close as it gets to perfection.  The awesome Amanda Shires who Nashville is proud to claim doing a long about the legendary Leonard Cohen. And it is a song that I think he would like.  I couldn’t find a video for this song, so instead, I included one of Amanda Shires singing a Leonard Cohen song.)

The week rolls along.  Today we have a six song mix of songs to brighten and lighten your day…

JUMP TO THE MIX

“Daphne and Apollo” by Odetta Hartman  (Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen is a recording studio, music collective, and record label located in Brooklyn, NY. The new album from The Great American Novel came out of Mama Coco’s.  Today’s song by NYC based Odetta Hartman comes from a brand new 23 song compilation which was released by Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen yesterday.  Link – HERE. I dig this song.)

“Kangaroo” by Big Star (spelled Kanga Roo on some releases. “Like Saint Joan

Doing a cool jerk  Oh, I want you Like a kanga roo“)

“Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March” by The Box Tops (once again, the magical, mystery shuffle has paired Big Star with The Box Tops for a double shot of Alex Chilton. I am soooo fine with this.)

“Dirty Gypsy Soul” by McNary (Our second day in a row with a song from this talented Nashville folk singer/songwriter)

“Tiger Nights” by The Bongos (in honor of the forthcoming NEW ALBUM by this legendary New Jersey band, we’ve been adding some older songs including this one from Numbers With Wings)

Well let’s get to it. Due to an unplanned change in schedule and some wicked traffic patterns, we had an extended set of music for the day…. complaining? who me?

Shuffle now… wait for the Jump

  • Something in Common” by Dawes from Stories Don’t End (2013)

California band pickup the California folk rock mantle originated and nurtured by The Eagles and Jackson Browne, and they do it in a thoroughly modern and original way.  No wonder they are one of the hottest band’s around.  Stories Don’t End has been out less than a month.

  • “Strong” by EndAnd from Mechanic and Energetics of Stilt Running (2013)

  http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=3959258905/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

The Brooklyn punk band EndAnd who we first caught up with with  their EP The Adventures of Hi-Fi in Space have just dropped (yesterday) the first proper LP. 11 songs clocking in at just about 21 minutes.  Here’s the lowdown, in the words of Vocalist/Guitarist Daniel Fern  “This album is immensely personal and angry. Maybe even schizophrenic, I don’t know. It’s 11 songs and only 21:30 minutes. It’s themes are focused mainly around immigration and being trapped mentally and physically in a situation one does not have control over (I was an illegal immigrant for nearly half my stay in America since I arrived at the age of 12. I’m now 27). Diseases such as chronic muscle tensions, stomach disorders. and cancer. Relationships, loss and mistrust. The loss of my father and grandfather. These are the themes. I’d rather not put one under a microscope.”
  • “God and Me” by Kopecky Family Band from The Disaster (2010)

Like Dawes and EndAnd, Nashville’s own, Kopecky Family Band released a new album in April 2013. Kids Raising Kids is getting some well deserved buzz. Today, though, we look back to the band’s 2010 7 song release called The Disaster (thanks to the poor judgment of some erstwhile Goodwill donator.

  • “Here It Is Tomorrow” by Game Theory from The Big Shot Chronicles (1986)

We promised to keep some Game Theory in the mix as we headed into this new month, and we didn’t disappoint – This final song of the 20 song Morning Playlist is the 7th by Game Theory in the mix.  It’s a nice piece of pure power pop heaven.
