Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – denigrate obtuse mix

Let’s jump straight into the Shuffle….

“Talkin’ World War III Blues” by Billy Bragg (from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan: A Folk Tribute. A great way to start today’s shuffle.  Taken from a song by song cover of Dylan’s landmark second album – a Woody Guthrie-style talking blues song covered up just right by one of the voices of my generation, Billy Bragg)

“Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabell” by Annie Sellick (from Let’s Make a Christmas Memory. Annie Sellick is an acclaimed and accomplished jazz vocalist from Nashville.  This is her first Christmas album, and this song happens to be lead track.  It’s a glorious and beautiful take on a French carol which includes the backing of a full orchestra. The album is due out on November 28, and Sellick will have a release performance on December 5 with the Nashville Jazz Orchestra. I usually don’t listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving, but I wanted to introduce this one to you. I have at least one other new Christmas album which I hope to be featuring before the holidays are over.)

“The Murder Mystery” by The Velvet Underground (from The Velvet Underground.  The eponymously titled third album by New York band The Velvet Underground was also the first without founding member John Cale. The Murder Mystery stands alone on this album (which is filled with more straight forward sounds) with it’s overlapping spoken-words and the haunting counter-point vocals.)

“I’d Rather Be High” by David Bowie (from The Next Day.  When this year began, it was pretty widely accepted that David Bowie was all but retired from music. As it turned out, Bowie still had a few musical tricks up his metaphorical sleeve and released his twenty-fourth studio album in early March. The album has received generally positive reviews with some calling it his best work since Scary Monsters released over twenty years prior.  We dig deeper into this album with the 8th track.)

“Riptide” by Vance Joy (from God Loves You When You’re Dancing.  A pretty nifty folk/pop song getting some significant buzz from the people who buzz about such things.  Vance will be touring with Young the Giant next year including a stop in Nashville at the Ryman in March.)

“Tennessee Blues” by The Howlin’ Brothers (from The Sun Studio Session.  I think at this point I’ve featured this whole record. The video playlist for today includes a live video from the Sun Studio Session. A PBS show is scheduled for early next year, and February 4 is the target date for the next full-length The Howlin’ Brothers record.  As this song played this morning, I was driving just north of downtown Nashville, and it was a crisp, clear Fall day, and this song was just about the perfect accompaniment.)

“Smug” by Grounded (from their new untitled album.  Nice way to close out the Shuffle with an extended – 7 plus minute jam from this young band from Florida.)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Foggy Notion Mix

For me, the thing about Lou Reed’s music that is most significant is not that it made me fall in love with Lou Reed’s music, it is that it opened up my mind to the possibilities of what music could be.  It started this life-long quest for what is next and what else is there.  Certainly, I did fall in love with Lou Reed’s music both in and out of the Velvet Underground, but I didn’t stay there.  I don’t know how many posts I say in the hours after the news of his death broke about Lou Reed being the doorkeeper or gatekeeper. It was also so gratifying to see a very diverse list of people who acknowledged the influence that Lou Reed had on their music.

See, I don’t write Ear to the Ground to make money – I would have quit long ago if that were the case, and I don’t write to make friends with so many cool artists – although that it is a pretty nifty side-effect. I write Ear to the Ground (and I keep writing on those days when I am not sure anyone is reading) because music moves me.  Lou Reed’s music moves me and the band who you’ve never heard about – there music moves me.  And the music that is being made somewhere in the world that I haven’t heard yet – that moves me. See, I’m passionate about music. I write Ear to the Ground because even if I stopped writing this blog, I would still be thinking about music and wondering what was next and what else was out there waiting for me to hear.



Let’s Shuffle

“Lillian, Egypt” (LIVE) by Josh Ritter  (from Live at the Iveagh Gardens. I dig Josh Ritter.  He writes cool songs and he has a great voice. That’s pretty much enough for me sometimes.)

“Desperado” by Linda Ronstadt (a cover of a then still recent Eagles song from her fourth studio album, Don’t Cry Now. I’m honestly not a huge Eagle’s fan – but to tell the truth, Linda Ronstadt could have been singing the phonebook, and I would be listening. Beside, while listening to this song I found my self staring into the horizon like Karl Farbman on Seinfeld.)

“May the Road Rise to Meet Your Face” by James Crawford (from his self-titled debut.  I think this is a traditional Irish Toast. I have to say it is really cool when some you have known for a long time makes a truly great record.)

“Temporary Though Exchange (AKT Vocal Version)” by Its Teeth with Travis Orbin and Gabriel from The Gabriel Construct (from Divided – which you can get  here   – CD Sold out digital still available – One of the reasons I stay open, not only to genres and styles of music but to the various ways that music reaches my ear holes, is that I never know…  Earlier this year I was introduced to The Gabriel Construct by a music promoter – one of the best in my opinion and thus discovered one of the best, most challenging albums of the year.  Gabriel recommended this album which includes his collaborator Travis Orbin and on which Gabriel contributed vocals to this track. I never know… if I had dismissed the submission for The Gabriel Construct because it had come from a promoter – not only would I have missed out on that album, but more than likely I never would have heard this amazing record either.)

“Dixie Fried” by The Howlin’ Brothers (from The Sun Studio Sessions.  Nashville’s own, The Howlin’ Brothers start off their album recorded at the famous Sun Studios in Memphis with a cover of a song by one of the legends who came out of that storied, tiny building on Union Avenue – the late great Carl Perkins.)

“New Boy” by The Connells (from New Boy. The title track from the Mid 90s EP by this great and perhaps underrated band from North Carolina.)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Fast Cars and Loud Guitars Mix

“Fast Cars and Loud Guitars. Local Bars and goin’ to far.” – Tim Lee 3.



So – I headed out Friday night to a well known East Nashville hot spot to meet and see my favorite Knoxville rockers, Tim Lee 3.  I had an awesome night, met some cool folks, and saw some incredible music…

I was so glad to finally get to meet Tim and Susan Bauer Lee in person.  First up, the audience was treated to a 20 minute preview of Tom Weber’s incredible film (10+ years in the making) called Troubadour Blues.  It’s about the modern purveyors of the folk tradition of the travelling musicians who get paid to drive from town to town and get rewarded with the chance to perform for an hour or two.  The film features the likes of Peter Case, Dave Alvin, Mary Gauthier and many, many more.

The live music began with RB Morris of Knoxville. I was shamefully not familiar with Mr. Morris’ music, but that deficiency is in the process of being corrected. He is a top-notch singer songwriter and a poet – gratefully, we treated us to a couple of poems from his latest book.

Next up was Nancy Apple from Memphis.  The undisputed Queen of Memphis Country, Folk, Blues what have you.  Her song about finding out that Johnny Cash had died struck a chord with me.  I got to talk to Nancy and share a couple of my Memphis stories.

Next a couple of locals were invited to join in on the show.  The thing is, when you are in Nashville (and East Nashville in particular), the caliber of locals is pretty darn amazing. Julie Christensen was the first local – a fairly recent arrival. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, try this: she was a founding member of the legendary Divine Horsemen and an integral part of the L.A. Scene which helped bridge gap between punk rock and what would eventually become Americana music. Oh, and she also spent many years singing with the one and only Leonard Cohen.  Beyond that incredible history, she is a breath-taking singer and songwriter.  She performed a song by Memphis song writer Dan Montgomery which has me scrambling to find out all I can about him.

Next was the second local, Amelia White – who we first saw perform last year at the Five Spot. She was every bit as amazing as we remembered.

Next up was the Tim Lee 3. Now, regular readers should already be all over Tim Lee 3, but for the uninitiated, they are a tight three piece rock combo from Knoxville featuring Tim Lee (The Windbreakers) and his wife Susan. They rocked the house thoroughly playing a couple of songs from their latest album, Devil’s Rope, one from their previous double album Raucous Americanus, and a hand full of new songs which bode well for the next Tim Lee 3 album. 

The night ended with RB Morris joining Tim Lee 3 for a few more of RB’s songs including one of his which had been recorded by Marianne Faithful and John Hiatt.

Okay y’all. Monday morning’s are just freaking hard sometimes. Fortunately, the old Shuffle monster fired up some hard rocking tunes to lead off today’s shuffle and jump start my week.  Here we go:

“Fiasco” by Cloud Gavin  (from Posture – Cloud Gavin are from Danville, Illinois and came to our attention via a Twitter follow – I think. I’ve been listening to this record quite a bit, and I’m glad it finally came up on the shuffle. An excellent way to begin the morning drive.)

“Sleep” by Traams (from Grin – This one came via Amazon’s monthly Rising Artist playlist. Another Rocking tune.  They came from Chichester, England which is also the home of False-Heads another band we’ve featured recently. Hmm.. I’ll have to find out more about that place.)

“Like What They Like” by Goodman (off of the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen compilation.  Goodman is the brain-child of Michael Goodman of New York.  I don’t know very much about him, but between this and the previous two songs, I was suddenly fully awake and alert. Rock on!)

“Troubled Waltz” by The Howlin’ Brothers (another from The Sun Studio Session. A nice change of pace – with a waltz from this unique Nashville band which was recorded in the studio that helped give birth to this crazy thing we call Rock and Roll.)

“Mumblin’ Guitar” by Bo Diddley (from The Chess Box (Disc One) – You just cannot go wrong with Bo Diddley. Nope. Can’t go wrong!)

“The New Twenty” by Puppet Rebellion (from Chemical Friends EP – another recent Twitter “discovery”. Puppet Rebellion are from Manchester – a place with a storied musical history of its own. I really dig this – my first taste of Puppet Rebellion and can’t wait to hear more)

“Out of Time” by Mr. Kind and Tektite (from Mr. Kind and… – from Mr. Kind’s collaborative covers EP – this time taking on the Blur song and joined by Oakland Extraterrestrial Hip Hop band Tektite. Mr. Kind was formed by Brian Bergeron who was one of the early featured artists at E2TG.)

“The World’s Not Waiting” by Penicillin Baby (from Jams: Volume III – what better way to close out a set that began with three hard rocking songs than with a hard rocking jam from this Nashville band.  Supposedly, I am allergic to penicillin, but I’m just fine with Penicillin Baby.)

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Riff Raff Mix

Well… here I am on a Friday with a lot of ground to cover. So, I am going to riff for a little while… I like riffing. I use to call this kind of writing – Stream of Madness writing… meaning, I just let the words fly, without any inclination to edit in order to mask my insanity….

Let’s post a picture and then we will jump into the madness…



It’s a great day! Why? Well it is Friday! That would normally be enough, but a couple of cool things to report…

1.  Tonight at The Family Wash – a swell time including a 25 minute preview of a new documentary about musicians, plus poetry and music – including our good friends from Knoxville – Tim Lee 3.  Plus Special guest Amelia White – who we saw back in September at The Five Spot.  Should be a fun time.

2.  Tomorrow – October 12, 2013 Marks the official release date of the self-titled album by my friend, James Crawford.  We’ve had this one in our playlist for a few week, and as I’ve reported, this has rapidly become one of my favorite albums on the Fall. We have the album linked in our Webstore which should become active to tomorrow – OR… you can head over to James Crawford’s Website and Facebook page.

3.  We have a shuffle to bring you…

“Til I Find You” by The Howlin Brothers (this is from The Sun Studios Session which we nabbed off of Noisetrade but which will be released October 15. Bonus Trivia: In the 1989 Jim Jarmusch film Mystery Train – there is a scene where the characters are outside of Sun Studios, and you can see the apartment building where I lived in the background. The movie was filmed in the Summer of ’88 which is when I moved to Memphis. So… Oh, The Howlin Brothers kick serious butt – so check it out.)

“She Shot a Hole in My Soul” by The Box Tops (mmm huh. Yep… and yeah Nashville to Memphis and we stick in Memphis for this Pop-Soul classic )

“Harder” by Nava Hotel  (I keep digging this Nashville band more and more every time I hear them. Back to Nashville ;-))

“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by Devo (from Are We Not Men? We Are Devo… how to you deconstruct a classic song and make it your own?  I don’t know ask Devo. By the way, I just some an article link (which I didn’t follow) which said that Johnny Lydon almost became the singer for Devo in 1978. I have no idea if that is true or how “almost” it was, but now think about Johnny Rotten singing this song… go!  and as for a Memphis/Nashville connection- um… well, I think the Stones were heavily influenced by Memphis music… whew!)

“There Will Always Be A Way” by The Autumn Defense (The Autumn Defense were one of the highlights of the Americanarama event at Grimey’s  – there is your Nashville connection – back in September.  They do the 70sish lush pop harmonies about as good as anybody in the business. That is them in the picture up above the Jump)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Such an Icy Feeling Mix

After a busy and pretty awesome weekend, I’m easing back into the a busy and pretty hectic week.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Don’t Rush the Author Mix

Good morning! 

First of all, I must say that I had a blast hanging out at the Five Spot last night.  Thanks for The Alternate Root for putting on the show, Ear to the Ground featured artist Mark Robinson for hosting, and all the great musicians for making such wonderful racket. 

It was great meeting Mark Robinson and Sue Havlish in person.

It was nice hanging out with  fellow blogger Too Much Country, Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (Couch by Couchwest alum who we’ve posted about here – SPOILER ALERT: they may just happen to have a song into today’s Shuffle…), and James Crawford (a fellow survivor of my hometown, who is about to put out an amazing record – much more to come about that). 

It was one of those only in Nashville kind of nights.  From Johnny Fritz’s drummer working the door, to the great music from Mark Robinson, Dave Coleman of The Coal Men (who I also got to meet), Kevin Gordon, Jon Byrd, Eric Brace and Peter Cooper, Amelia White, and  the amazing Tim Carroll closing out the evening.

Switching gears (completely): 

Avant Guard Dogs  are the best band you’ve never heard. That’s right, you’ve never heard them.  No, it was not them who played the party at your frat house before their first album ever came out. No, you don’t own a bootleg import of their unreleased first single on pink vinyl in it’s original cover.  What the band does have going for them is some amazing album covers.  Take a gander HERE (where you will also see classic album covers by The Shambles and Quivering Brains.  All of these covers were designed by the amazing Ron Ruelle (Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett).  Seriously, if you need graphic design work – check him out.

“Georgia Rain” by The Questionnaires (from their album Anything Can Happen and taken from the latest Feel Bad for You mixtape and submitted by the aforementioned Too Much Country. The Questionnaires were an iconic local rock band in Nashville back in the mid to late 80s and early 90s).

“Tag Along” by False-Heads (A fantastic young band from England – the members attend Chichester University.  I just like saying Chichester.  Try it. Chichester. See.)

“Go Hang” by Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (Surprise! Unless you ignored by Spoiler Alert. As I said, I had a blast meeting all three members of Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray. I’m also excited that they will be back in Nashville on October 22 for a show at The Basement.)

“Big Black Car” by Big Star (No Big Star in yesterday’s shuffle, but they come back into the shuffle to today with one of my favorite songs.)

“Girl” by T. Rex (our second T. Rex song of the morning.  Btw, Marc Bolan was pretty awesome)

We close out the shuffle with a change of pace (actually, I think the whole shuffle has been all change of pace).  Morgan Page is an Electronica artist from L.A. via Vermont. Nadia Ali is from New York.  She was nominated for a Grammy for a track Morgan Page remixed.  To be honest, this is a genre I know very little about. Based upon Facebook likes a whole lot of people are into this. For me, it was a great change of pace and it’s always fun to step outside my comfort zone (which I hope is pretty large anyway).

  • “Suit and Tie” by Justin Timberlake (feat. Jay Z) from the forthcoming The 20/20 Experience (2013)

Okay ya’ll JT is a Tennessee boy and he is probably one of  the most multi-talented chaps around. His work on SNL, his “History of Rap” numbers with Jimmy Fallon and yes his new music is really cool.  This is mainstream pop/soul/rhythm and blues/hip-hop of the sort you don’t usually read about on Ear to the Ground, but when I had the chance to grab the MP3 I didn’t hesitate.

  • “Mind Eraser”  and “Little Black Submarines” by The Black Keys from El Camino (2012)

The shuffle brings us a double shot from The Black Keys seventh studio album.  The album is called El Camino which is also the name of a car which infused my pop culture consciousness for much of my young adult life.
