So… we move on into the mid-week… We have another typically atypical morning shuffle…. hang out for a while, won’t you?

“Wicked Waters” by Benjamin Booker

Dig this a bunch. From his 2014 self-titled debut album… cool stuff…

“Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go to the Party” by Courtney Barnett

Man! I can related to this song so much! This one is from the Australian singer-songwriter’s full-length debut called Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. The album was released back in March.

“VFW Hall” by Leland Sundries

Another track from the Brooklyn-based indie band. This song can be found on their EP called The Foundry. I got hold of it on a 4-song sampler.

“Send Me a Selfie” by Reckless Johnny Wales

The lead track from Reckless Johnny’s album American Heart. The album can be found digitally, but the official CD release is still forthcoming. Hear what happens when the myth-laden troubadour jumps head-long into 21st Century pop culture.

“Little by Little” by Niamh Crowther

A really cool track from the inbox. Niamh Crowther is an Irish singer-songwriter. “Little by Little” – her new single, which will be released this coming Friday, was recorded at Windmill Lane Studios and was produced with Tim Martin (whose credits include The Corrs and The Commitments).

“The Backyard” by Dinosaur Jr.

This song has been in my playlist for some time. It is from a tribute album to Mark Mulcahy of Miracle Legion and Polaris. The originally version of this song was the title track on a 1984 EP by Miracle Legion. The original was a tasty slice of power pop fun. Dinosaur Jr. grunges things up a bit to fine effect.

“A Street That Rhymes at 6 A.M.” by Norma Tanega

Wow… this one came via Aquarium Drunkard. It is from 1966 – the year I was born. I dare say this song has held up well better than I have. It was released a b-side of Tanega’s only hit, “Walkin’ My Cat Names Dog”. This song hit my shuffle like a breath of fresh air. I love it. Tanega was linked with Dusty Springfield, and she wrote the lyrics of several of Springfield’s songs.

“A Test of Character” by Spoils

Some instrumental rock – taken from a sampler put out by Continental Magazine. Dig it. I think the band is from Texas, but I was having trouble finding out more. I will check the magazine later.

We close things today with another recording from the World Café sessions. This song was released on the 2014 album. Comet, Come to Me. A lovely way to close the shuffle.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Best as I Can Rember Mix

So I few things…. I added a bunch of music to my playlist night including 3 mutli-artist compilation/samplers/mixtape deals. Several of those new songs showed up today in the shuffle… speaking of which, I had a little glitch in the middle of the shuffle and lost the history of the first several songs in today’s shuffle, so I had to recreate from memory, I may have missed a song (but if I did it will come up again) and the order is almost certainly not correct. Now, I do realize I could have just posted this with the disclaimer, but in the spirit of authenticity, I needed to let you know that. I hope this will not impede your enjoyment of the shuffle.

“Runaway Man” by Bullfrog Willard McGhee and Tad Walters

Thanks to Popa’s Tunes and his recently revived Popakazooza mixtape, I have added the Piedmont Blues Guitar work of Bullfrog Willard McGhee and the music of Floyd Council (who wrote this song) to my musical vocabulary. Check it out!

“Waiting” by Mouth Reader

Mouth Reader are from nearby Murfreesboro, TN, and to be honest, I cannot remember how I was first introduced to them, but thankfully, I was, and so, I got a nice little message from Bandcamp when they recently released some new music, and so I scooped it up, and so far, I am loving it very music.

“Everybody’s Happy Nowadays” by The Buzzcocks

The April Feel Bad For You Mixtape featured songs used in commercials. It turns out that this Buzzcock’s song was featured in a 2007 AARP commercial. Yes, I feel old now.

“Theme from Harry’s Game” by Clannad

Clannad was the band that gave Enya her start. This song was written for a television series about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It appeared on the Clannad album Magical Ring. In 1992, the song was used in a Volkswagen commercial. So, it is our second track from the Feel Bad For You folks.

“So Real” by Clear Plastic Masks

Clear Plastic Masks helped to wake me up after the Clannad song… nothing against Clannad, but maybe not the best choice for a sleepy morning commute. This band is from Nashville and came to us from a new Noisetrade Mixtape of artists who will be appearing at Bonnaroo (which I never know how to spell despite the many years it has gone on).

“Pedestrian at Best” by Courtney Barnett

Courtney Barnett is from Australia. This song is from her debut studio album called Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. This song is also on the Bonnaroo mixtape, and I dig it a lot.

“White Room” by Cream

The classic song from Wheels in Fire comes our way from the FBFY mixtape. It was used in a 2000 Apple commercial. It prompted me to think about classic songs showing up in advertisements. Growing up in the 1980s, I can remember the disdain expressed by some people about iconic tracks from their youth being used to hawk cars and whatever, and I also remember the first time an iconic song of my youth was similarly used, and how I felt somehow violated, but then I got to wondering how many younger people discover great music from first hearing it played in a commercial, and if that makes it a fair trade off…. then I thought about how many current songs are being used in commercials. Then, I saw something shiny and I forgot what I was thinking about. But, yeah, Cream!

Another song used in a commercial. This was used in a British T.V. commercial a year or so after it was released (from the Portland band’s 2000 album Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia). And, I just realized that this song is about as old as the Cream song was when I was in high school…

“I Don’t Wanna Be in Love” by Dark Waves

Dark Waves are an L.A. Indie Pop band – this song is from their 2014 EP Dark Waves. This is the third track of the day from the Noisetrade Bonnaroo Mixtape. Adding a bit of electro-romantic pop music to the shuffle.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Daddy Sang Bass Mix

Took a drive across the river last night, to a little dive bar in East Nashville called Fran’s Eastside. Saw E2TG favorite Darrin Bradbury and the amazing Tim Carroll. Fun night with great music, meeting cool people, and even the Music City Roots bus was there… and why not? I have some pictures, but my phone is being stingy and won’t release them yet.

By coincidence and because I have a ton of his music loaded right now, Darrin is in the shuffle again today – an older song – one of the first that really caught my attention. He has a new release which I will be sharing more about soon….

We begin with E2TG favorites – Nashville’s Year of October from a live radio show in Knoxville from this past spring. They have a new record coming out – appropriately enough in October.

“The Day” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

The first of three songs from a recently released (and Free on Noisetrade) live version of their self-titled debut album. Filled with great songs like this one and the other one and the one after that…

“Boat of Car” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

Giving us the subtitle of this post.. the opening line of this song was later used in the song Will the Circle Be Unbroken? and in a song by Johnny Cash (written by Carl Perkins)… or I could have my chronology mixed up…

“Memorial Day” by The Danbury Lie from Fourth Time’s a Charm

Another great track off the new release by another E2TG favorite. The Danbury Lie are on of the most original bands I’ve come across, and I will keep spreading the word…

But don’t trust me – listen/read the words of Jason from The Grimm Generation: ““I downloaded the new The Danbury Lie for my ride in this morning and oh man. Love this record. Weird subsonic classical merged with something like The Shins, all sparkly sounding and weirdly well thought out. Well done, tDL.” – JKrug “

“She’s an Angel” by They Might Be Giants from First Album Live

That other song from the previously mentioned live album.

“Avant Gardener” by Courtney Barnett from The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas

Courtney Barnett is from Australia, but she would fit in well here in Nashville and is welcome here any time. Says me, the official gatekeeper of who can come to Nashville…. Cool song, and I approve of the title and so do the Avant Guard Dogs.

“My Baby Took My Baby Away” by Bobby Bare Jr’s Young Criminal’s Starvation League from Undefeated

Great song by Nashville legend and son of a Nashville legend Bobby Bare Jr. who has been a staple on the Nashville scene since I was a kid… come to think of it, he must have been a kid, too because he isn’t that much older than me.

“Twenty Little Soldiers” by Darrin Bradbury from The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos)

The aforementioned song by the aforementioned Mr. Bradbury. Nashville readers go see this guy either Wednesday’s at Fran’s or sometime… for the video I picked a version done by his old band Big Wilson River who were a Featured Artist here before I even knew Darrin.

“Good Enough” by Mr. Kind from Wide Awake/Open Hands

Yet another new song from Bay Area band and E2TG favorites Mr. Kind.
