Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another month.  My Facebook memory thing reminded me that it was a year ago today that I came off of my self-imposed hiatus and returned to posting daily morning shuffles.  It’s been quite a year, and I have to stop and thank everyone who helped make it so.  All the readers, artists, and all the people who have sent me music.  That last group has increased exponentially  – especially in the last month or so, and I have been struggling to keep up.  I want to give all the music I receive a fair listen, and so I beg patience as I try to listen and respond to as many submissions as I can.  Believe me, it is a great problem to have for someone who loves to hear all kinds of music.

“Free” by Whiskey Shivers

Another song from Whiskey Shivers from the Austin band’s self-titled album. Yep!

“Nobody” by Killing Kuddles

Long time #E2TG favorite Killing Kuddles from Atlanta, Georgia are back with a new EP called, Sinking Ship.  This is our first listen to that album.  All I can say is that it’s great to have Killing Kuddles back in the shuffle!

“When it Rains” by Tiffany Huggins Grant

Jonquil Child – the debut album from Singer-Songwriter Tiffany Huggins Grant is due out on July 7 (a week from today!).  Boasting Huggins Grant’s incredible vocals, some wonderful songs, and top-notch Nashville production from #E2TG favorite Mark Robinson (plus some great Nashville musicians), the album has become a favorite of mine since I got my hands on it.  She is playing a CD Release show in Nashville on July 18 at Douglas Corner.  Should be a good time!

“Sleep All Summer” by Crooked Fingers

Crooked Fingers was formed by Eric Bachmann following the breakup of Archers of Loaf.  They have had rotating cast of musicians backing Bachmann.  This song is from their 2011 album, “Breaks in the Armor”.  This was my first real listen to this band, and I like what I’ve heard.

“Blackspot” by Jonas Howden Sjøvaag’s Navyelectre

I always like to receive music that I would be unable and unlikely to hear otherwise – also proof that I do listen to music that comes my way.  Navyelectre is primarily the music of Norwegian artist, Jonas Howden Sjøvaag.  Some improvised music with elements of electronic pop music.  Highly original and a great addition to my shuffle.

“14” by Sam Morrow

Sam Morrow returns to the shuffle with another track from the Seahorse Session.  This one is about starting drinking at age 14.  Morrow recently celebrated 4 years of sobriety (which I post only because it was on his Facebook page), and it is very clear this music comes from a richly authentic place.

“Some Things Stay” by Brock Zeman

Like Sam Morrow, I wrote about Brock Zeman and connected via social media, and then kind of lost track of him. Recently, I was fortunate to see him play an incredible round at the Bluebird, and I was reminded of what drew me to his music in the first play.  Great songs, a unique voice, and a rich sound.  From Pulling Your Sword Out of the Devil’s Back.

“Why Do the Heathen Rage” by Guadalcanal Diary

Our third Georgia related band.  Marietta’s Guadalcanal Diary’s debut, Walking the Shadow of the Big Man is one of my favorites of all time.  This song is among my favorites from that album.

“I Wanted Hair Like Alice Cooper” by Batkhi Dahn

More music from Connecticut avant garde, experimental, whatever band Batkhi Dahn from Plays 15.

Blah…  the dreary weather continues, and I am still not feeling 100% wonderful, but here at Ear to the Ground we press on…..

“Meat is Murder” by The Smiths

The title track from the Smiths’ 1985 second album… Thankfully, I happened to be eating a meatless entre as I was writing this…

“Invisible Hour” by Joe Henry

This is the title track from Joe Henry’s thirteenth studio album which was released about a year ago.  Enjoy…

“Barely Holding On” by Sam Morrow

The lone new song on Morrow’s live EP, Seahorse Sessions which can be found currently on Noisetrade.  Good stuff.

“This is the Time (Ballast)” by Nothing More

The Acoustic version of the first single from this alternative metal band’s self-titled major label debut.  It comes from the Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler we have been featuring.

“Wasted Daze” by Mouth Reader

The final track on this Murfreesboro, Tennessee garage band’s EP Hands.

“Knock ’em Dead” by Rhubarb Whiskey

Rhubarb Whiskey are a band from Oakland, CA.  They play a particularly potent blend of roots, punk, and American gothic music.  This song is from their 2013 album, Same Sad End.

“Wrong ’em Boyo” by The Clash

Two songs with “’em” in the title in a  row. From London Calling, this is a cover of a song originally recorded by the British Ska band, The Rulers.

“Leavings” by Cletus Kennelly and Lori Kelley

Due to not feeling well, I missed what I am sure was a great performance by Lori Kelley at The Building in East Nashville, but I am fortunate enough to have seen her play and hopefully to see her play again soon.  I also had the great good fortune to see a rare Nashville appearance of Lori with her long-time D.C. area partner Cletus Kennelly.  I got hold of their album, Lotus, and I have really been digging the music.

“Kara Takes Drugs” by The Ghoul Goes West

Our final track from the album, Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things from our favorite band of misfits from the Northwest part of Arkansas.

“Drag” by Grant Lee Buffalo

We close out this shuffle with a track from the 2009 album, Mighty Joe Moon, by the L.A. rock band fronted by Grant Lee- Phillips.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Oldest Story Mix

As I was walking back to my car from an absolutely amazing Bob Dylan show last night, I was reflecting on what an amazing month of live music this has been…  Did I mention that Dylan was amazing.  I saw him first and last in 1988, and he was simply going through motions. Back then, his set including some of his all-time classics, but it didn’t matter.  That show left me flat.  Flash forward 27 years, Dylan’s set was very heavily weighted toward his last few albums, many of which I wasn’t that familiar, but the sound was great, Dylan seemed to be having a blast, and as a result, I put the show up among the best I’ve seen.  I feel like I can finally say that I have seen Dylan.

“Gonna Change” by Gear Daddies

Another track from Billy’s Live Bait.  Gear Daddies are revving up for hometown 25th Anniversary shows in Minnepolis coming up soon.

“The Oldest Story in the Book” by Paul Kelly

Australian Paul Kelly is one of those musicians that I have known of and loved for a long time, but who I someone feel like I have missed out on. He has been making music for many years, and he is still making great music, and I am trying to get up to speed.   This song, which I love, is from his 2004 album Ways and Means and was included on his 2008 compilation Songs from the South Volume 2.  The video was shot at Music City Roots here in Nashville in 2013 when that show was still held at the Loveless Barn.

“Mostly Miss in a Hit Kinda Town” by Darrin Bradbury

A live version of a song that later appeared on Darrin’s True Love album.  Supposedly, this recording from his live album Tur-Lyfe: A Live Recording of Unfortunate Events, is the first performance of this song (but don’t rely on this information for anything important).  Darrin will be coming soon to a city near you (if you are near one of the cities – in the Mid-West and South) in the near future, and rumor has it a new live album is coming soon in addition to the hotly anticipated Life is Hard studio album which I have heard and love.

“Sleepwalker Blues” by Joe Sundell

Sometimes songs meander around my playlist for several months and then jump out a odd times to offer a jolt a awesomeness. I featured some of Joe Sundell’s music from his album The Hat Thief many months back (maybe a year or so), and this song stuck around my playlist to add some authentic country music to this mix.

“I Been to Georgia on a Fast Train” by Billy Joe Shaver

Speaking of which… Billy Joe Shaver is included in my listing of GREAT artists that I got to see live this month.  He performed at Music City Roots a couple of weeks ago.  This one goes all the way back to his 1973 debut album Old Five and Dimers Like Me.

“Fairly Local” by Twenty One Pilots

There are some that may say that following up Billy Joe Shaver with Twenty One Pilots is pretty screwed up.  Hell, I may even be one of them, but I have learned not to question the wisdom of the shuffle. The shuffle works in mysterious ways… take that how you must… This song is from the forthcoming album Blurryface, and it was included on a Noisetrade Bonnaroo compilation.

“Sure Thing” by Sam Morrow

I featured Sam Morrow’s music on Ear to the Ground a couple of years ago, and I am really glad he jumped back onto my radar.  I have been seriously digging the new music he’s been putting out.  This is a live recording of a song from his 2014 album Ephemeral which is an EP which you can find on Noisetrade.

“Song for Harry Nilsson” by Luke Saxton

Luke Saxton is a young singer-songwriter from the UK.  This song about the late American singer-songwriter is on the album Sunny Sadness which was released back in November, and I like it quite a bit.

“Rikki’s Shuffle” by Michael Hedges

From Live on the Double Planet by the late guitar virtuoso Michael Hedges.

“Honey Don’t Think” by Grant Lee Buffalo

Another nifty song from Mighty Joe Moon which was a primo thrift store find of mine at the beginning of this month.

“A Love Bizarre” by Michael Hedges

Besides being an other-worldly guitar player, Michael Hedges also liked to do unexpected covers.  This is a cover of the Sheila E song and is also on the Live on the Double Planet album.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Get up and Do Something Mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Be sure to “Like” Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

So… I’m having trouble thinking of  a profound intro to this shuffle…  So… it is Friday! The weekend is upon us.  Get up and Do Something!  I snatched that song from the Soul Asylum song in today’s shuffle.  Good advise, that I need to take myself sometimes…

“Song for an Angry Young Man” by Beat Rodeo

I was a young man when I first heard this song.  And, I guess I was angry in my own way.  I’m not so young anymore, and I try not to be unnecessarily angry… or at least try to keep my anger working for me rather than against… but I still understand this song, because that “angry young man” is still inside me…

“If It Takes Me to You” by Boy Named Banjo

From their album Long Story Short.  Boy Named Banjo are going to be performing at Bonnaroo, so if you are going down to Manchester in June, look for them on the Club Stage.

“Karaoke” by Five Eight

This song was on the Athens, GA band’s 1994 album Weirdo.  They recently appeared at SXSW and this song came from a Noisetrade SXSW sampler.

“My Rival” by Alex Chilton

From Alex Chilton’s 1979 solo album Like Flies On Sherbert.

“Weekend Syndrome” by The Naddiks

Another rocking track from the album 21CB…  The Naddiks are from Canberra, Australia and the weekend is in full swing there.  This and every weekend – have fun, but be careful and act decent to people. Okay?

“An English Gentleman” by James Dean Bradfield

This song is from the 2006 album, The Great Western.  James Dean Bradfield is from the English band The Manic Street Preachers who are doing some American dates in support of the 20th anniversary of their classic album The Holy Bible. I really love this song and so far everything I heard from this record has been amazing.  I am someone who derives great pleasure from “discovering” great music whether it is new or just something I missed out on the first time around.

“Villains” by The Vigilance Committee

I am always happy when some harder edged stuff filters through my inbox.  This Indie/Punk band is from Long Island, and I’m looking forward to hearing more of their stuff.  This song is from their album, “Exit a Hero” which is a concept album about the first vigilance committee established in San Francisco in the mid 1800s.  The album is due out in a week, but you can pre-order via their Bandcamp page.

“Sometime to Return” by Soul Asylum

Damn, ya’ll Hang Time is a flat great album….

“Good Old Fashioned Pain” by Young America

Another awesome track from the latest EP  by this band who are currently split between Athens, GA and Nashville, TN.  I’ve enjoyed getting to know Taylor and Drew (the Nashville part of the band), and I am awful proud of the music they are making.  Pain Rain and the Mundane is out now – via your Normal music portals.

“Old Soul” by Sam Morrow

We featured Sam Morrow a good while back, and it is great to have him back in the Shuffle, and to be reminded of what a great songwriter he is…  from his most recent album Ephemeral.

“I Won’t Slip Up” by The Delines

From the Album Colfax, by this great Country/Soul band from Portland, Oregon.

window.amznpubstudioTag = “eartothegro00-20”; http://ps-us.amazon-adsystem.com/domains/eartothegro00-20_3dcd3a52-1a1a-4afe-a2fd-aaba8e251afc.js

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Orange Windbreaker and a Beard Mix

We’ve reached the end of another week.  Today’s shuffle is a pretty interesting mixed bag with a couple of artists making their E2TG debut, plus a few old favorites, and some of my heroes…  I’m short on time, so this will be haphazard.

“Good Ol’ Boy (Gettin’ Tough)” by Steve Earle

Well, after bringing up the first two songs from Guitar Town in order on different days, today’s shuffle skips to the fourth song.  Maybe this was the third song on some Japanese import???  In any event, I grew up in a kind of small town in Tennessee, but I never really felt like I connected with the “Good Ol’ Boys” when I lived there, so when I first heard this song, I thought I had found that point of connection…

“Breakthrough” by Science!

Science! are from Seattle, a bunch of cool people I know like them, and they have participated in Couch by Couchwest in the past (which is probably where I first heard them) – I hope they participate this year (hint, hint)… This song is on their latest album Alcoves and Alleyways which was released in January.

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”); “Right Now” by Marshall Crenshaw

I love all of Marshall Crenshaw’s albums.  His self-titled album and Field Day probably rank among the greatest pop albums of all time. But, this album, Downtown, will always hold a special place in my heart.  It’s all tied to the place and time that I first listened to the album and the heady nights – being a freshman in college and experiencing new things and old things in a new way…  Hearing this album again, transports me back in the best possible way.

“Tense” by The Bell Hours

I am fascinated by the random shuffle that produces my Morning Shuffle each day.  Certain songs or albums or artists may sit in my queue for several weeks and then two songs come up on subsequent days. The Bell Hours are from Denver, and the music I have been playing comes via Noisetrade.  The EP is called Easy Weather, and I really like it a whole bunch.

“Vestige Gone” by David Dondero

I am about 90% sure I featured this song before.  I think it may be one of the songs that transferred over from my old phone and I couldn’t remember if I had featured it or not… You know what, though, I don’t really care.  It is quite simply a brilliant song that I would happily play a few more times.  Musically, I live for the aha moments when I hear something and if it’s not a new song, I wonder why I never heard it before, and then I wonder why everyone hasn’t heard it before. And then I set about to do my small part is righting that wrong.  I don’t have those moments every day, but I feel that way about David Dondero.  Darrin Bradbury turned me onto his music….

“The Smart Schoolboy” by Forest Mountain Hymnal

From their work-in-progress Dear Balladeer which features songs from the Ballad Book for John Jacob Niles… We’ve featured Forest Mountain Hymnal several times, and they never disappoint. I love the traditional folk feel of this song.

“Dancing Dead Men” by The Ghoul Goes West

Another song from the Arkansas band off their album Ghosts and Bones and Blood and Things.  I little macabre dance music for your Friday…

“Sucker for Love” by Cherub

Nashville’s Cherub make their E2TG debut today with a fine bit of funkiness. I came across their name in an article recently, and then coincidently found this song on Freegal a few days later.  I do love the randomness of how I discover music sometimes. This is not what most people thing of when they think of Nashville music, and that is both a good and a bad thing.  Cherub’s music, though, is definitely a good thing.  I think they have some NSFW videos, but I don’t think the one I picked is one of those… So click on related videos with care if you are at work or school.

“Poetry in Motion” by The Great Game

The Great Game call what they do, New World Music.  They are from all over the world mostly Europe and they bring a variety of influences into their sound, and it all blends nicely and some really awesome alchemy comes into play, and the result is what you hear.  This is from their self-titled album which was just released a week ago.

“Insect Ball” by Eight O’ Five Jive

When it is early morning on the week following the shift to Daylight Savings Time, and it is Friday and you’ve about had it with the week, but you have one more work day to get through and you are approaching your office and really not feeling it… you need some Jive sometimes to give you that little kick in the ass and get you moving.  Or at least I do.  This is a cover of a Big Jay McNeely song that can be found on the Nashville band’s debut album Too Many Men which is going to be released in April.  Thanks to Sue Havlish for sending this my way, and for introducing me to a couple of the members of the band.

“Sure Thing” by Sam Morrow

We close out the week’s worth of shuffles with the return of Sam Morrow to E2TG. This song comes to us from a Forty Below Records sampler off of Noisetrade.  The song is an uplifting illumination of the notion that often the greatest joy comes out of the worst pain.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle – Pocket Change Mix

https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

So… Let’s see… I added 76 more songs to the active playlist last night.  That is over 350 songs added in the last two weeks.  Last nights additions included 1 direct artist contact, 3 from publicists, a couple of albums from Noisetrade, and some randomness from Freegal.  Let’s get to today’s shuffle//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“Jamie” by Darrin Bradbury (from NEW!!!!The Almost Great Crepe’s (Demos).  Song was originally on a 2005 release called Darrin Bradbury. So digging this music. We have a different song in the video playlist and the original release in the Store. I’ll post the Bandcamp widget to the Demo release below)

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=2839766575/size=small/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/transparent=true/

“Ring True” by Let’s Active (from Cypress. I added the Cypress/Afoot combined CD into the playlist shortly after learning of the passing of founding member Faye Hunter.  It’s been so good revisiting these amazing songs. This is the last song to the featured here, and it’s a great one.)

“War” by Sam Morrow (from True North EP. A California singer/songwriter.  This ones been in the playlist for a while. I like this.)

“Pocket Change” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones (from Greetings From St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Sweet soulful music from Birmingham, Alabama.  The song seems to be called “Broken Bones and Pocket Change”, but it came across as “Pocket Change” on the version I downloaded from Noisetrade.)

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=15781826/size=small/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/transparent=true/

“How to Cook a Wolf” by Lys Guillorn (from Winged Victory. Guillorn is part of the wild and wacky crew known as The Grimm Generation.  She also has a long running solo career. This is her second full length studio album – ten years after her self-titled debut.  This some amazing stuff, which I will be writing about quite a lot in the weeks to come. This is reminiscent of (but not derivative of) some of the great songs by The Velvet Underground.  Further proof, and Connecticut is a hotbed of awesome music.)

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=5244004/size=small/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/transparent=true/

“Message in a Bottle” by Bhi Bhiman (from Substitute Preacher.  From an album of original takes on some extremely well known music.  Here Bhi takes on the classic song by The Police. This isn’t my favorite cover on this album, but it is highly original.  The album has some amazing covers including a killer version of the AC/DC song Highway to Hell. For reference, I included a few additional covers of the “Message in a Bottle” in the Video Playlist)

i can’t stand people who bitch and whine
lets drink a beer from a paper bag while we got time
bang bang let the music go bang!
brilliant shining & nasty
bang make the music go bang!
let me hear a guitar sound like a train
bang bang make the music go bang!
bang bang make the music go bang!
 X

 Today’s Mix after the JUMP

Pre-Shuffle:

“The Line Which Divides” by Liquid Casing (progressive, political, personal)

“Old Soul” by Sam Morrow (Some very good modern folk music from California)

“Move Together” by James Bay (British Soulful Stuff)

“Rain On” by The Blind Owl Band (new music on old-style instruments from NY)

“Daughters of Ursa Major” by Chris Schlarb (At almost the same time I discovered this music, they were playing a show here in Nashville – at the Stone Fox… bad timing, but good music. I hope they come back soon.)

“Supersoaker” by Kings of Leon (Nashville’s homegrown arena alt-rock stars are back with some eagerly anticipated new music)

And the next song takes us into the Shuffle:

“Make the Music Go Bang” by X from More Fun in the New World (1983)

As I was coming of age, musically speaking, my good friend, Rex Silo published a review of this album in our exceptional high school newspaper, The Charger. I fell in love with this record just based upon his review, and when I finally heard it, I was hooked totally. X are back on tour this summer and fall with B-52s for some dates and with Blondie for others.  You can hear the infant sounds of Americana, Alt-Country etc. being birthed this album as punk, rockabilly met some of the most amazing songwriting of this or any other era.  Still one of my all-time favorite albums.

“Someone Like You” (Adele Cover) by Valued Customer from “Fun Covers”

In anticipation of the release of Kalpa (widgeted above), I downloaded some older VC stuff, and I’m glad I did, because it looks like they have removed their older material from their Bandcamp Page.  So – as we’ve said and said again, check out Kalpa. The song today is from a nifty little covers album which features deconstructions of some (at the time of recording) current pop hits as well as a classic soul song.

“Careful, Body” by Great Forest from Me and My Friends EP (2013)

Great Forest are from Arkansas. They play a pretty nifty kind of Indie Rock.

“Highways Long” by The Blind Owl Band from This Train I Ride is Made of Wood and Steel (2013)

A nifty bluegrass-inspired “road song”. Set in the South by a band from New York state.

“Rough Carpenters” by Black Twig Pickers from Rough Carpenters (2013)

This band originates near the Virginia, West Virginia state line, and they make music inspired by the mountain

“Triggers and Trash Heaps” by Centro-matic from Fort Recovery (2006)

Another great song from Texas Band Centro-Matic.
