Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Freaks Mix

Busy, busy… A few things before we jump into the shuffle…

First, a reminder that next week we begin our very #E2TG approach to The Best of 2013.  Stay tuned for that.

A couple of live videos hit our inbox this week and wanted to share…  The Mad Doctors are from Brooklyn and they kick some major butt.  Check out this performance from 11/30/2013.

This next video is from our Nashville friends Year of October.  We are looking forward to a new album (fingers crossed) for 2014.  Meanwhile, this past weekend, they did a mini-tour which included a stop in Louisville which is where this next video was filmed.  Check it out!

On to today’s mixture of mixed musical melodies….

EXTRA BITS:  “The Remainder” by Andrew Ferris    “Freaks” by The Hawk in Paris   “Jealousy” by Chamberlin  (note: read the band’s Facebook Page Biography)    “Sunday Morning” by The Velvet Underground (and Nico)     “Hold Tight” by Fats Waller   “Cold Chicago” by Humming House   “Refuse to Hide” by Jenny Leigh   “Viet Nam” by Minutemen   “R*A*M*O*N*E*S” by Motorhead   “Sweet Head” by David Bowie  “The Wheels of Love” by Terminal Gods

Our twofer Thursday Tracks (okay I made that up and I know twofer should be on  Tuesday but whatever):

“Nothing Indeed” and “Take 5, D.” by the Minutemen (from Double Nickels on the Dime.)

SHUFFLE:

“Sex” by The 1975 (from The 1975.  A band and album that made some year end lists.  I like what I’ve heard so far.)

“Cold Blooded” by American Babies (from Knives and Teeth.  A Philadelphia band.  Another band that I’m just getting acquainted with, and I like what I hear)

“Fox” by Cloud Gavin (from Posture.  This song has become a world-wide sensation and it’s dance inspiring video  has become an internet hit.  This is a really cool Rock song by a band from Illinois.  No silly dances were inspired by this song.)

“Whatevering” by The Great American Novel (from 😦  . A stand-out track and a great introduction to the musical and humorous style of this New York band.)

“Fallen” by The Westies (from West Side Stories.  This album is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine.  Just pure honest songwriting, well played and sung.  Really… that’s all it takes.)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle – Quiet Kid Mix

Taking a break from adding any more names to the Hall of Fame, but more will be added soon…

Meanwhile, on a non-work day, we have an rather interesting mix of music to get your week started:

“Soul Love” by David Bowie (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.  Another as we continue our survey of this classic album.)

“Cannibalistic Slaughter” by Eyes of the Dead (from their 2008 album, The Weak and the Wounded.  ‘Cause nothing says good morning Monday like Cannibalistic Slaughter…. Eyes of the Dead are from New Haven, CT – cause when you think of death metal, you think of Connecticut).

“Noose” by Josephine and the Wildfront (from Swallowed by the Ocean.  Josephine and the Wildfront are from Nashville)

“Ariel” by Moovalya (from Moovalya.  More good stuff from this Phoenix hard rock band.)

“Masterpiece” by Cloud Gavin (from Posture. From Illinois)

“Dancing in the Rain” (Outcast Mix) by The Hawk in Paris (from the Freaks and Outcasts EP. An Alternative/Electronic band from Nashville.)

“Sinners You Better Get Ready” by Black Jake and the Carnies (from Watching, Waiting.  Some more awesome from the original Ayatollah’s of Crabgrass.)

“Quiet Kid” by Dead Confederate (from Sugar. A song that goes back to the 2010 second full-length by this Georgia rock band.)

“Oceans Away” by The Bright Light Motion (from For All the Right Reasons.  from an earlier band by our friend, Joe Mansman (The Quick and the Dead, and Cosmonauts.)

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Adolf Builds a Bonfire Mix

The Band of the Month poll is heating up.  Right now, it’s looking like a two horse race, but remember you’re all winners in my book.  There is still time to vote.  The time remaining on the poll thing is kind of wonky, but I believe it will end around 4:30 tomorrow (Thursday) central time.  The poll will begin showing hours remaining whenever it gets below 24 hours.   The poll is on the left sidebar
<—— over there. I believe you can only vote once (at least per computer?).  Be sure to check out all of the bands up for the honor.  They are a diverse but all deserving bunch.   The winner will join In Cages our December winner and move onto the Band of the Year competition in early December.
Now is also a good time to mention we have a Twitter list which follows all of the Bands (and members) who have been featured on the blog either as Bands of the Week or on one of our Ear to the Ground Recommends posts. Plus, the list also follows Popa’s Tunes, Folk Pop News and a few other friends of the blog.  The list feed is streaming on the right sidebar, and if you are on Twitter you can follow the list.
You can also visit one of our Amazon Stores or search Amazon through this blog or visit one of our affiliates  (links on the top of the right hand sidebar).  We also add affiliated links to most posts with relevant or interesting products.
Enough – let’s get down to it. Some good lesser known bands and artists get the spotlight in today’s shuffle:
Nik West describes herself as a bassist, vocalist, runway model and her music as Prince meets Erykah Badu with a funky bassline… Eyes Closed is off of her Just in the Nik of Time album.  The song has a jazzy feel and yeah, it has a funky bass line.

Next up is a new 7″ release from Fort Lean.  I grabbed a download over at Stereogum of the song, Sunsick. If you aren’t up to speed on Fort Lean this is a good way to catch of with this hot Brooklyn band.
(You can view the Amazon page for the band’s self titled EP which was released last summer by clicking on the album cover left click and open link if you can’t see the album cover)
Finally We have a track we originally grabbed off of a Noisetrade Sampler. The Hawk in Paris is a Nashville based band who deliver very awesome music.  The song we heard today is The New Hello (Hers) – the album His + Hers also has a song called The New Hello (His).
