A few weeks back I spent a little time following the Bandcamp recommendations rabbit hole, and I came to “3 Folk Songs” by Taylor Brown who was recommended by Brian Bergeron of Mr. Kind.

The Plum Magnetics are from New Orleans, and they play a rocking version of World/Fusion music.  Sweet Confusion is an extended kind of funky instrumental track.

I dig David Bowie and I dig the Modern Lovers. Pablo Picasso is one of my favorite Modern Lovers’ songs, and I think I like their version of this song better.  Still, this is an interesting conversation starter.

Parallax by The Plum Magnetics. From their album Terra Animata. This band came to me from James Moore of IMP.

The day would be complete with out some #MCFK, this time via Ghost Pal from their God Save MCFK album.

NOTES:

Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen #MCFK is well represented today with yet another track from Sam Davison (I’m not complaining, but I hope he doesn’t think I’m stalking him. It’s all the shuffle’s fault).  This one kind of brings to mind Jonathan Richman at his best (unless it doesn’t in which case I’m just a music blogger pulling stuff out of his ass.  Which is pretty much the case, if you haven’t figured it out, but I work hard to make that stuff look pretty.  All this to say, I love this song.  Plus two tracks from Ghost Pal featuring Mama Coco’s ubiquitous presence: the incomparable Oliver Ignatius.  God Save Mama Coco’s indeed!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. are from Detroit which I never thought of as a NASCAR city, but it does have the whole auto industry thing going so what do I know.  I mean really – what do I know about Detroit or about NASCAR? Not a hell of  lot. I do know that the band name is part of what got me to listen to these guys in the first place, and I’m kinda, pretty much glad I did.

Joseph Arthur – I just keep loving these songs.  I can’t help it.

Maybe it’s my Louisiana roots or maybe it’s a Nashville thing, but when I hear The Delta Saints, I just want to dance… and I’m not much of a dancer…  this was the song which propelled me from my car into the walk up the hill. Talk about getting a body moving!

I know that when most people say that they don’t like Country music, they are talking about the Country radio hit song kind of stuff sung by guys named Brad and Keith and Toby.  You know the kind that gets mashed up with really questionable hip-hop stuff… you know stuff about trucks and beer and girls and dogs and dirt roads.  Sturgill Simpson plays COUNTRY MUSIC. I don’t know much about the other stuff I was describing, but I know I like COUNTRY MUSIC.

A couple of really cool covers. Kopecky Family Band covering the Fleetwood Mac classic, and the incredible Gillian Welch covering Radiohead.

Angel Snow wrote “Lie Awake” with Viktor Krauss and it was included on Victor’s sister’s 2011 album Paper Airplane. Viktor’s sister is Allison Krauss.  Here’s Angel doing the song herself from her self-titled album. 

The great thing about featuring Double Nickels on the Dime by The Minutemen is that it has so many songs, the featured posts carry on for a while.  The Minutemen are always a great way to start the day.

Another from Mr. Kind‘s self-titled release.

Solardrive is the new band/project from Balthazar Getty and this track features David Gould who is bassist in the band Mother Tongue.

We also have some cool music from Slack Armada out of Chicago, Swear and Shake out of Brookyln, Humming House from Nashville, and Grounded from Florida.

The Home Demo we feature from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen artist Black Doctor, Jr. is pretty damn awesome.

Starting 2014 with a classic Lou Reed epic is a statement of the endless and timeless quality of his music.  This song brings together two of the artists who had a huge influence on my early musical taste and development (via a spoken word bit by Bruce Springsteen).

Great classic music from Bob Dylan, David Bowie, X, and Bruce Cockburn round out this excellent beginning to what is promising to be a great year.

It’s mid-week.  Nashville is still digging out from our massive 1/2 snowfall yesterday morning (which by the way was mostly melted by noon yesterday)  (note for non-Nashville readers: Nashville really freaks out over winter weather).  Anyway, it was a frosty morning, and we have a great mix of songs to warm your hearts and minds and… I don’t really know what I’m saying at this point, but I’m trying to use words that sound like they belong in the introduction to a blog post. Whew!

It’s that time of year… everyone is releasing they best of 2013 lists.  Here at #E2TG, we will kick off our Best of 2013 posts Monday morning.  Of course, we will be doing it in a manner befitting Ear to the Ground… stay tuned.   By the way, for the first time since this blog began, we will not be having a Band of the Year Readers Poll.  More on the reasoning behind this later.  However, we will be unveiling our 3rd Annual Band of the Year in a special post later this month.  Tune in!

Last week, we learned of the passing of Scott Miller (Game Theory and The Loud Family).  If you are not familiar with the music of these two great, but underknown bands, now would be a great time to rectify that situation.
The family has released all of the Game Theory albums for free download at The Loud Family Website.   We have added the entire Game Theory collection into our current batch of songs from which we shuffle.  We will keep the songs up for the rest of the month in tribute to Scott Miller, and then will likely keep some of them up just because they are awesome.  We’ll be getting some Loud Family added to the mix soon, too.

 Swear and Shake are a New York band that just came into my consciousness. The released Maple Ridge last summer, and I just saw on their Facebook page that they are playing a show in Nashville next week.  I kind of dig this song and I’m interested in hearing more. Check it out.

  •  “The Real Sheila” by Game Theory from Lolita Nation (1987)

Lolita Nation was and is a remarkable achievement that all too few people have heard.  I’m very glad to be able to do whatever small part I can in changing that. In the mid to late 80s, there was a very definite movement afoot (oblique Let’s Active reference semi-unintended) as bands from Athens, GA, Nashville, TN, Winston-Salem, NC, San Francisco, CA and elsewhere took off from a musical diet of Beatles and Big Star among others and cut a path of at time jangly pure pop music across college radio dials that eventually reached the ears of impressionable kids like me. Game Theory was extremely literary, intelligent and man could they turn a phrase in a catchy way.

  • “Voodoo” by The Mohawk Lodge from Damaged Goods (2012/2013)

Another track from the current release by Canadian band, The Mohawk Lodge.  I’m hanging with this album.  Definitely worth checking out.

  • “The Red Baron” by Game Theory from Distortion (1984) also on Tinker to Ever to Chance (1990)

Game Theory released the compilation album Tinker to Evers to Chance in 1990. Distortion was produced by fellow California musician and Paisley Underground pioneer Michael Quercio who would later join the band.

  • “Who’s There?” by Ghost and Goblin from SUPERHORRORCASTLELAND (2013)
SUPERHORRORCASTLELAND was released on April 20, the same day that the new Skeletons in the Piano album, Please Don’t Die was released.  We just heard about this band and this album from a Facebook post by The End Men which also referenced in SITP album.  We already had Please Don’t Die, but we immediately went out and download this album.  We knew in advance, we would not be disappointed, and we were not.  More to come!
